It was a decision by Mazda not to add touch screen. Tbh the screen is too far forward to be a touch screen. I have no problem with the screen being non touch or touch. I drive an European CX-30 and can say I love the elegance, the refinement, the quality of this car. It is simply enjoyable. Almost everything you touch on the inside is soft and nice, unlike most other cars out there. And you migh have skipped the dual bottomed trunk, for some reason there is a space below the aparent bottom and just under that you have the safety kit etc. I simply removed the upper bottom to get more space. The HUD is also wonderful, nowadays I rarely use the "normal" screen for speed etc. There is also something I don't understand: blocking (locking) back windows also blocks the front right one and even I have to unlock them in order to close/open the other 3 windows (maybe some Japanese thing, I don't know). Another thing i just like is the size and confort offered by the door handle and the arm rest, they are at the same height, the size is very good so I reach the steering wheel while holding my arms on them; this is soo good. Most cars have a small, "childish" arm rest, unpractical.
The Mazda has Adaptive LED Headlights, aka matrix LED high beams. It's a pretty advanced technology that goes unmentioned in most reviews. It makes night time road trips much more enjoyable.
I get flashed by oncoming drivers bc it doesn’t cut off fast enough (same with any other car tbh), at least Mazda (and BMW) put the button to deactivate it on the tip of the stalk - whereas in a Toyota it’s far off with the ESC button and in a VW Group car you gotta cycle to full high beam and then back down to low beam which is just stupid.
You say adaptive but I'm constantly blinded by mazda lights which yeah are bright but can often blind me comming the other way Nice ti have bright lights and all. Ut needs proper adaptive capability
The previous Kona was good...but I REALLY like this new version. The light bars at the front and back are really clean. It's edgy, but not over the top. Big fan of the tech as well. The smallish windows for that claustrophobic feeling in the Mazda was a dealbreaker from the get go. This was really well presented and fair. Excellent presentation skills - clear and concise. Keep up the awesome work!
I’m shocked. I test drove both, the Mazda CX-30 is phenomenal. I’ve had it for 18 months. No issues. I drove the Kona for 2K km and it was so cheap and I felt every single bump.
Have test driven both too. Pretty much, the Kona is more practical, has more features and is more sporty and ambitious with its design. Whereas the Mazda is a more traditional, refined, and luxurious experience (for the price). Comes down to what you need your car for. If you plan on doing any sort of activities where you need to lug around gear or people or pets, the Kona is the go. If you only really need to do driving by yourself or with one other and don’t do too many extra curricular activities then the Mazda is the go. For my lifestyle, I’m going to go with the Kona as the Mazda might have nicer textures inside, but it’s far too small and impractical for what I need my car for for the same price point as what the Kona offers in extra tech and features.
@@xXYellie12Xxfor me it’s the tech. The CX-30 is more refined, sure and I don’t *need* the space in the Kona but I fell in love with the “sci-fi” ‘look’.
I'm evidently not in your target audience, but I would have much preferred a review of the base models of each car. In any case, I think you should compare similar engines (e.g., 2.0L NA) and similar drive trains (e.g., FWD) in every such comparative review!
I have a CX-30 on order. That HUD is worth all that big screen stuff & more. You just never look at the dash. The instant you hop in it’s all class. I notice many lines on the Kona don’t line up especially the tail gate & the dash layout doesn’t flow & how often do you adjust the passengers seat? Once? It was hard to tell but it looks like Hyundai / Kia still don’t back light the air conditioner controls so if you are unfamiliar with them you need to turn on the interior light to see them at night!! I recently had a Kia Sportage 2022 Model for a couple of months & this should be pointed out by any car review as unacceptable. Each to his own but the Mazda is a classy small SUV rather than an attention seeking school project gone wrong
Your comment seems a bit aggressive.. almost like the Kona makes you a bit insecure about your purchase. Enjoy your CX30 that has the design of a car from 2009. Everything about that thing looks outdated.
how well do slim led lights work compared to much larger round head lights? also thin indicators are dangerous during the day in full sunlight, impossible to see.
I just checked out a 2024 Kona here in southern nevada. A deal breaker for me, was that on full brightness, the panels were hard to read in bright light. Here in the desert, we get lots of bright light that will wash out the panels during the day.
This is a very good review well done. However I will call this out time & time again. Please do not call 10,000kms service intervals sub standard. As a mechanic down in Melbourne I can guarantee you if you service these cars as intended at the 10k intervals they will out last any opposition for Germany etc that prefer longer distances. It is a fact. Services are cheap replacing an engine because you couldn’t be bothered to do the basics of owning a car which is service the dam thing is very expensive. I get so frustrated at manufacturers pushing out service intervals. It just leads to more & more catastrophic problems later on when the cars are 3-5 years old with many Ks on them because they are not getting serviced enough.
100% agree, having longer service intervals is not a good thing. It's just a sales gimmick and "professional" car reviews should know better. Car companies realised extended service intervals were a selling point and worked out how far they could push it so the car won't self destruct within the warranty period. If the car gives up a couple years after the warranty period, it's not their problem and happy days they might sell more cars.
That’s because people don’t understand that this is just the complementary service intervals to maintain the warranty, but you should get your own oil change in between to maintain your car. People do not read the manuals and pay much attention to the cars. They just drive it.
But I agree 100% do not wait 10,000 miles or 7000 miles to get a oil change even though all technology has changed you still need to maintain your car and keep a check on the oil just looking at the color and tell you when you need to change or not
Great comparison I literally had these two on my list. I was right though, sticking to the Mazda. Edit: So after a month of research and test drives- I went with the Mazda CX30. Top spec came in 2.5k cheaper than the Kona. The Mazda felt much more refined and better built. I liked the Kona but just never wowed me. And at 52k for top spec with a sunroof it’s way too much for city small Hyundai. The only thing the Kona had over the CX30 was remote start and phone app access, and AWD which is ridiculous for a city car.
Watching car reviews makes me wonder what the hell people are doing intheir vehicles. All the tech stuff is lost on me. Im driving and maybe listening to music. Engaging and fun to drive, cx30 turbo all the way
As a person who just reserved a Kona, I see a very clear distinction between the cars. You either pay for a high quality leather suitcase, or you pay for a plastic box full of toys. As for me, I would choose the toy box every day!
I have same dilemma. Mazda is great, all positives are there, however... Rear and trunk space is an issue for me. Other than that it is a bit strange that mazda is actually bit more expensive in higher trims. Kona is better if you want 'everything'.
Not once did we hear the Kona’s bells, and safety chimes or Mazda’s. Were they turned off? No mention in the video as to how annoying some of these chimes can be. You had your eyes off the road speaking to the camera plenty of times. Where were the chimes or even a mention of the safety chimes in either car? Bells and chimes can degrade the driving experience, particularly in urban driving.
For sure they were turned off and they are super annoying. I test drove the Kona and it was driving me nuts, I found it super distracting too. Ding you're not in the centre of your lane, yes I know, I was avoiding a pot hole. Ding you're 4 k's over the limit, yes I know I sped up slightly to change lanes safely. FFS
Maxda interior is so outdated took the Kona N line for a test drive last week and drives very nicely and the interior is outstanding. Currently driving 2022 top of the range xv Subaru and would prefer the 2023 Kona
not following the latest style doesn't mean bad. Touch panels and big screens are sold as modern because they are a big cost saver for the manufacturer. For the driver it's bad, also for safety.
outdated? from my point of view the Mazda's interior is simple, elegant, comfortable, practical and safe. I don't like unresponsive touchscreens. It should not be forgotten that all Mazda functions, from infotainment to driving settings, are always at hand in the elegant wheel - you can concentrate on driving instead of fumbling with huge and cheap displays
@@worrywart1311 Look everyone, its the 1 guy that thinks the Kona is ugly. The kona is going to destroy the competition. Its hilarious how everyone that sides with the CX30 in the comments are the ones that have one on order or already bought one. Biased much? The design is incomparable, and if you think otherwise, you're just a fool. The CX30 looks like it was designed in 2010. In fact, my old 2010 Mazda 3 looked far better at that time. Besides the HUD, the kona is miles ahead considering design, technology, features, space, and even price. The extra $1200 is peanuts for all the extra features that the Kona offers. That damn magnifying driver’s side door mirror, short windows / high door line makes it feel a little claustrophobic, ride is a little too firm, though everyone says interior is premium it is a little bland, ride is a little overfirm, when beeps & warnings happen the info doesn’t stay on displays long enough to see what you did. Upsides, it’s a comfortable & pleasant place to sit, the motor transmission combination works quite well & rarely gets caught out, great graphics & detail in HUD, feels well planted on fun bends.
Great review , glad you pointed out the HUD in the Mazda and its features. I like the look of the Kona but that air scoop/deflector in the rear is almost hideous. Good creature comforts and yes a little roomier in the Kona for rear seat passengers. Also I am glad they dropped the DCT in the Kona. Those fuel comparisons though clearly show the Mazda is the winner and judging by comfort, drive you looked more happier in the Mazda, plus struggled less not having to look over screens and being distracted. Higher rev noise levels in the Kona means that engine is struggling. Your turns in the Kona looked very uncomfortable as your face said it all 😂.I have not drove the new Kona but believe the steering wheel will cover alot of the screens and really make alot of it difficult to see. Interior finish, quality, design hands down goes to Mazda. Costing is very high on the Kona top of the range also , almost to the point a Mazda CX-5 Akera Turbo is almost the same price.😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Kona 1.6t N Line drive away. $53,337 ( just got quoted by a dealer online) Mazda CX-5 2.5t Akera drive away $55,950 These cars are not even in the same class.
The prior generation Kona was forgettable to say the least, but this new generation Kona N-Line eats the CX-30 for breakfast. I have been in Mazda’s, and I actually don’t think they have class leading interiors. Especially not anymore now that everyone else stepped up their game. And lets be honest, the CX-30 backseat is only suitable for small children.
Cx-30 hands down, reliability is what counts. Can't compare a Mazda to a Hyundai when it comes to reliability. Previous owner of a Hyundai and an owner of a Mazda.
Cx30 has a premium quality interior, sleek design exterior, less petrol thirsty and many many more extras and 4000$ cheaper vs Kona and guess what, Kona is a winner. I feel someone had been paid before the last vote ;-)
Where do you see "many more extras"? Kona has AWD, heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, passenger power seats, full digital display thats 12.3" x2 (mazda has one 8" display), 19" wheels compared to 18", etc. Thats just off the top of my head. AWD alone is almost worth that 4k difference. Comparison is night and day
For anyone watching, a 10,000km service interval is NOT substandard - 10,000km is absolutely what every single car on the road should be serviced at. Extended service intervals of even 15k or 20k (which many European car brands offer) are the WORST possible thing you can do for your car mechanically - one of the biggest lies of the car industry right now.
Lol if the Sonata, Excel, Elantra, Terracan, Lantra were the most ugliest cars back in the 90s and 2000s and still look ugly, Mazda and the other Japanese cars have always been loved not hated, i love Japanese cars. The old Tiburon look as hell 🤣🤣🤣
Got rid of the Kona EV that became very unreliable (random intermittent changes of speed when using the adaptive cruise on empty roads as well as on motorways) and had problems (paintwork) that Hyundai failed to address as the warranty ran down. Changed to a CX-30 and would never consider going back. Much better build quality and a great drive. The Japanese know how to build cars and properly support them , I would never touch a Hyundai/Kia/Genesis again.
The Kona might be "better" when it is new, but in 3-5 years the Hyandai/KIA vehicles show their lack of reliability. Go with a Mazda you will be grateful you did in the long run. (I have owned both Mazda & KIA vehicles)
Traditionally that might be true, but realistically that's hard to judge. Hyandai/KIA vehicles have definitely come a long way in the last 5 years, so the future reliability of their vehicles is somewhat unknown still.

Unless you mean seatbelts, wheels and passenger cubby, then indeed not much has changed.
When I look at these $35k+ cars I can;'t help but think the value will diminish so quickly over the next few years as we get more hybrid and EV options.
Not at all. EV in California, you cannot give away 2012-2013 Teslas, car yards full of the junk. 20K for cars they paid 75K for, USA dollars, and at 20K they still cannot sell thousands of them. EV, twice the price, half the range. Charging, baw haw

Sometimes I also get flashed by truckers (it works fine for small cars), it is a fair point.
UGH: NO-BRAINER....
>>> WHITE SEATS ARE A DEFINITE "NO DEAL"!! 😡 😮😢

You are absolutely right. My CX9 with adaptive head light makes Australian Night drive a breeze.
You say adaptive but I'm constantly blinded by mazda lights which yeah are bright but can often blind me comming the other way
Nice ti have bright lights and all.
Keep up the awesome work!
.. i saw that in a review, about the closed in feeling / blind spots inside the cx30..
2:42 the tail bar is misaligned at the sides 😬
Yer. I did notice that.
Eagle eye ..wow , typical Hyundai / Kia quality.
For me mazda all the way with look premium and reliable
Had a look at the new Kona last week. Looked and felt cheap. Checked out a CX 30 and ordered one it was leagues ahead of the Kona in all departments.
" In all departments " ... I guess you didn't watch this video 😂
Some cars forget about the kids too
I'm evidently not in your target audience, but I would have much preferred a review of the base models of each car. In any case, I think you should compare similar engines (e.g., 2.0L NA) and similar drive trains (e.g., FWD) in every such comparative review!
same, we are not interested in top of the line models
Love CX-30. So elegant.
@@BLAlley it’s not Just RUclipsrs, it’s most if not all car reviewers who have absolutely no clue
But I agree 100% do not wait 10,000 miles or 7000 miles to get a oil change even though all technology has changed you still need to maintain your car and keep a check on the oil just looking at the color and tell you when you need to change or not
I'll take the Mazda any day ... AND the long term reliability will be better.
Might want to check your facts. Hyundai comes in at #4 on the reliability index in 2023, Mazda slightly behind at #5
While Mazda's design might be boring compared to the Hyundai's, I think it will last much longer & can easily achieve an evergreen design status.
My 22 Cx-30 came with keyless, awd and app control on the lowest trim level
Watching car reviews makes me wonder what the hell people are doing intheir vehicles. All the tech stuff is lost on me. Im driving and maybe listening to music. Engaging and fun to drive, cx30 turbo all the way
Exactly, love my cx30 it's a clean driving experience.
As a person who just reserved a Kona, I see a very clear distinction between the cars.
You either pay for a high quality leather suitcase, or you pay for a plastic box full of toys.
As for me, I would choose the toy box every day!
Why won’t reviewers call out Mazda for not having a touch screen. It’s important if you use Apple CarPlay.
The screen supports touch for Android Auto and Carplay but it has to be enabled. Unfortunately most car reviewers are remiss in mentioning this.
Mzda does have touchscreen in motion , instead of being a whiner about it , go learn to surf the menu and make it a touchscreen ....stop whining
The interior does seem more hi-tech, but it also looks very cheap and plastic compared to the Mazda.
There is an update coming to the cx30 in the next few months which brings updated technology including a bigger screen.
Is this stated on Mazda’s site?
@@Godwasyourdog yeah just unfortunate they didn't use soft touch material

waiting for kona to be released here in AUS.. not until NOV :(
what do you mean by released? you can test drive already,
They have been in Australia since July 🤷🏻♂️
I have same dilemma. Mazda is great, all positives are there, however... Rear and trunk space is an issue for me.
Other than that it is a bit strange that mazda is actually bit more expensive in higher trims. Kona is better if you want 'everything'.
Answer is simple- buy a CX5. Bigger than cx30 smaller than cx9. ( but cx30 is on a new platform, just to let you know )
@thoughts7107 cx5 was much more expensive when I added all the options I wanted.
@@-Jakob- Agreed, I'd rather have outdated than unusable.
outdated? from my point of view the Mazda's interior is simple, elegant, comfortable, practical and safe. I don't like unresponsive touchscreens. It should not be forgotten that all Mazda functions, from infotainment to driving settings, are always at hand in the elegant wheel - you can concentrate on driving instead of fumbling with huge and cheap displays
Mazda design looks from 1990's Kona all modern and sleek from the future. Kona is a winner even for more money.
This Kona has to be one of the ugliest cars ever designed. The only thing I like is the gas struts for the bonnet/hood.
@@worrywart1311 Look everyone, its the 1 guy that thinks the Kona is ugly. The kona is going to destroy the competition. Mazda is hideous and outdated in every aspect. 50k for an 8" display and analog dash? I had better in my 07 lexus IS. Even had ventilated seats in a 17 year old car, which mazda still lacks. Give me a break, the mazda is awful
@@thetopz4140 I dub thee King of Bad Taste. For info Mazda has increased the screen size to 10.5 inches and the display speedo center has always been digital. Unlike Kia, Mazda car engines are not noted for bursting into flames.
The Mazda is a new car, but has the features of a 5 year old car, but charging todays prices e.g. the centre screen is not even a touch screen, has old auto and very old engine
Why not compare turbo with turbo?
Isn't that Mazda's 2.5 L comes also turbo in Australia?
The kona for me
which one is Quiter when cruising? Kona or cX30?
He said-CX30
Even though you have selected the Mazda CX30 with the 2.5L engine the comparison probably should have been with the Hyundai 2.0L, in my opinion. Otherwise quite a good comparison.
Idk what theyre doing to u in Australia but a Kona N Line is 31 and 32k a CX30 (all awd in US) turbo w 250hp and 320! Lbft is 33k to 36k. Mazda is much quicker.
Look at the current USD to AUD exchange rate. $1.54 AU = $1 US so $31k USD = $47,630 AUD.
The Kona looks totally rugged in- and outside of its design - and the interior quality and design is lightyears away from the CX-30!!! Looks like a Suzuki Swift or something
in this class of cars! Todays recipe of nearly all manufaturers - BIG SCREENS instead of an easy to read gauges....everything just has to be different than before,
no matter if it makes sense or not !!!
They’re incomparable in design. Masda looks like produced 20years ago
That is why it will still br a classic and appreciated design 10 years from now, while the funky ones will wash away very soon.
If the Turbo CX30 was available in Australia it would be game over for the Kona N.
Does Mazda offer a turbo in Australia? I feel you should have done a turbo to turbo comparison.
Nope
Well you compare luxury trim mazda with sport trim kona would have been better comparing the kona ultimate trim with its leather seats etc
C type connection, I don't know but the end that plugs into your phone maybe C type, but all phone have USB at the end where you plug into power source. So, C type at the power source doesn't make sense..
C can charge faster if your charger is USB A it’s time for an upgrade. New chargers can charge your USB C equipped phone even faster.
USB C can also transfer data faster which is better for playing music from your phone or other USB device.
You did not use a turbo Mazda , but Kona gets a turbo ....what joke , not fair match-up .Kona bias here, the CX-30 with 256 hp /320 torque gives a better drive experience by far , the drive is what matters to me , not the tech or dead space I drive around all the time , it's the drive and handling , pure power ...not a bigger screen or sun roof ....Kona is nice , but KIA has a dreadful recall record for 4or5 years ...no thanks .
This Australian review compares the modes which are available in Australia.
@@IN_ZANE_ Putting a turbo against a non-turbo , no matter what you say , is not right, driving and power mean more than cup holders and an in car T.V. did you even mention horse power and torque ...what is more important than that Mazda at 250 hp/ 320 torque ...after trying that drive with Mazda , you won't want the Hyundai and it's years of recalls and really bad dealers .
@@patrickgagnon9662 I get what you're saying and I agree it's no good comparing such different models. With this review being made in Australia and aimed at Australian buyers, I guess they're limited to what is actually available in Australia, even if it's not a great way to do a comparison.
@@IN_ZANE_ If you dare match up a turbo Mazda cx-30 to a Kona ...the CX-30 would blow it out of the water , make it eat Mazda dust ....this channel did not even mention the fact .
@@patrickgagnon9662 Yes but you are not listening. If you cannot buy the turbo CX-30 here in Australia it is pointless to use it in a comparison test. It is reasonable to compare the N/A CX-30 to the turbo Kona - they are similarly sized, and similarly priced in our market.
Mazda rules❤
Its hilarious how everyone that sides with the CX30 in the comments are the ones that have one on order or already bought one. Biased much? The design is incomparable, and if you think otherwise, you're just a fool. The CX30 looks like it was designed in 2010. In fact, my old 2010 Mazda 3 looked far better at that time. Besides the HUD, the kona is miles ahead considering design, technology, features, space, and even price. The extra $1200 is peanuts for all the extra features that the Kona offers. Sorry mazda fanboys, this ones a blowout
So many stupid people, Kona is cool as. All grannies likes Mazda
the CX30 was on 18" wheels, the Kona on 19" and overall the Mazda is smaller. so fuel economy should be better on the mazda
You obviously know nothing about dynamics and engineering.
Not 1 litre / 100 km, that is quite much. On the 2 litres CX30 I drive the average is actaully 6.3 l/100km for the last 42000 km.
Excellent review!
Glad you liked it!
CX-30 owner who swaps cars through the week & the annoying bits stand out more.
How tall are you? Just want to size my kids for the rear seats of the Mazda CX-30.
Costing is very high on the Kona top of the range also , almost to the point a Mazda CX-5 Akera Turbo is almost the same price.😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Kona 1.6t N Line drive away. $53,337 ( just got quoted by a dealer online)
Mazda CX-5 2.5t Akera drive away $55,950
These cars are not even in the same class.
Mazda is for old people, super duper ugly. no thanks. Only old and boring grannies would love those. Kona wins hands down.
Kona is like sitting in a 5 yo boy's rc car.. CX-30 all the way!
CX 30 years old more like it. If that design was released in 2007, I would not be surprised.
CX30 is pure luxury without the luxury price. MAZDA low-key luxury . Kia is cheap and feels cheap too.
Rica etsem altyazı seçeneklerine Türkçe dil seçeneği ekleyebilir misiniz ? Sizi anlamak ve takip etmek istiyorum !
“Headroom in the back is fine”......Dude your head was touching the roof, and you had NO Legroom !!
Is the reliability also good? Assuming Mazda has that famous great Japan reliability.
australia doesn't get the CX-30 Turbo, and maybe not even the Kona N. CX-30 gets its soul from the Turbo AWD, not this non-sense you're runnin' here.
Would have been a better comparison to have used the AWD CX-30.

(I have owned both Mazda & KIA vehicles)
idk my veloster is almost 10 years old with no issues yet
Traditionally that might be true, but realistically that's hard to judge. Hyandai/KIA vehicles have definitely come a long way in the last 5 years, so the future reliability of their vehicles is somewhat unknown still.

@@thetopz4140 the same features, you say? Which exactly? Head-up display, adaptive cruise control, lane assist and virtual cockpit? Unless you mean seatbelts, wheels and passenger cubby, then indeed not much has changed.
When I look at these $35k+ cars I can;'t help but think the value will diminish so quickly over the next few years as we get more hybrid and EV options.
Not at all. EV in California, you cannot give away 2012-2013 Teslas, car yards full of the junk. 20K for cars they paid 75K for, USA dollars, and at 20K they still cannot sell thousands of them. EV, twice the price, half the range. Charging, baw haw
I agree these cars are overpriced for what they are, but the EV revolution and it's potential impact on ICE resale value is a long way off yet, particularly in Australia (where this review is based) I still struggle to see that EV's will be the predominant thing in the long run. With so much research currently under way for alternative fuels (EV alternatives) it's really too early to predict what will be the norm 10 years from now.
