A study from Amsterdam showed that around 50% of schizophrenia cases in the city could have been avoided had cannabis not been consumed. Schizophrenia affects 1/100 people, while psychosis affects roughly 1/33 people - so we are talking a huge number of individuals worldwide.
Further, daily cannabis use increases the likelihood of psychosis 5 times, and cannabis induced psychosis has the highest conversion rate of all substance induced psychosis to schizophrenia. 1 in 2 who experience a cannabis induced psychosis will go on to develop the illness within 20 years. Terrifying.
The enormous mental health risks associated with cannabis use need to be communciated far more clearly.

This is something we already know, any drug can make a person unwell or increase the severity of the illness. Cannabis is safer than the vast majority of FDA approved drugs which your doctor prescribes everyday. In my own experience of cannabis psychosis, the vast majority of people had previous mental health problems and smoking cannabis had aggravated their conditions. I personally would be very cautious in recommending cannabis to treat mental health problems and would advice people to eat healthily, exercise and mindfulness..

A 2017 study showed cannabis induced psychosis has the highest conversion rate of all substance induced psychosis to schizophrenia. Higher than meth, lsd, opioids. Roughly 1 in 2 who experience a cannabis induced psychosis will be diagnosed with schizophrenia within 20 years. The mental health risks of consuming cannabis could not be be higher or more severe.
