- Using seafoam to clean the engine on this 2001 jeep wrangler TJ with the 2.5L 4 cyl engine. The engine was also making a slight knocking sound and the seafoam fixed the noise. Hope you guys enjoy!

I have a 2.5 tj. Before I rebuilt the vehical the frame rails where rotted and I drove it around for two years holding on 3 bolts and hauled my my 1996 seadoo challenger up a large hill with 3 men over 200 pounds each, some well over and no issues. I got it safetied at a shop and it passed. Anyway, no issues with it. Just thought because I could feel the cab shifting on the frame better to tear the vehical completely apart and rebuild it. Now I have a vehical rebuilt as factory and can't wait to get my parts to get it ready for work and play. I am happy to see that you had sucess with seafoam because I seen another 2.5 online and the engine sounds nice! I know they don't have much speed as I had a 6 cyclinder before but honestly for some reason I don't even notice probably because of its hauling capability and amazing grip in 4x4. I remember our boat launch here where thiers one side with sand hardly used and it had no problem crawling right out of there. Even though jeeps hold their value with money and time invested, they are underrated as what we can use them for! Well rounded vehicals!
I have a 97 with 4L. Sounds like a diesel when cold. Lazy lifters. Thanks for this . My best to all
It's a lifter tick. My 94 YJ with the 2.5L has done that since I was a kid. Was gifted to me at 15 by my gradnfather so growing up around it I know that distinct sound. Nothing is wrong with the motor, just being loud😂
Does it leak?
Yes.
Does it rattle?
Yes.
Does it make strange noises?
Yes.
It's a Jeep! : )
Try substituting a quart of oil with Lucas oil. That might help with the noise
Remarkably clean 2001
That noise sounds like stuck lifters My 2.5 started making the noise as well. Changed the lifters and much quieter.
Our 04 WJ has been making knocking sounds on cold starts since 2008. Stuck lifters? Manifold leak?piston skirt slap? I never bothered to chase the problem. The old dog still getting about 16mpg city at 160k miles. No oil consumption or other issues. That 4.0 is reliable as ever. If it ain’t broke well, let it be.
It's lifters. They all sound like that. 3 options. Lucas. Replace lifters and pushrods or turn up your radio
I prefer the 3rd option ignorance is bliss. It ain’t left me stranded yet so why fix it 😅
Dad always said, "can you hear it if you turn the radio up?" no? Problem solved.
Matt, About how much does that job cost if brought to a mechanic??
@@minaplatt1 really depends on the shop. Could cost up to 1k bucks if they wanted to stick it to you! It's only about a 200$ job in parts or less! I'd say at a good reasonable shop it should be about 400-500$ with parts and Labor. My advice is just put a quart of Lucas in it and it goes right away! Good luck buddy!
@@Mattderringer thx! Tried the Lucas but no luck. Also just tried 10W-40 with no luck. Thinking I’ll try the seafoam idea next. The lifter ticking is driving me crazy! Wife will not be happy with another large payment for my old Jeep so hoping that will be a last resort.
Found it!!! Thanks for an amazing video. I subscribed
Thank you!
My parents used to have a 2002 Jeep. My mother sold it to a family friend. It has a plow with it. It was an automatic one so that my sister and I could drive it.
Helped a lot with my tj
I would be terrified to do this but thank you! Lol!
My jeep was barely runing and it was trying to stall out all the time like it didnt have eny power and I used seafoam spray and it fixed it the engine runs good know
I have a 99 with 4.0 . It had lifter tick. I pulled engine and did oil pump lifters timing chain and gears.also new oil pan and exhaust manifold. Sounds like a new engine.
Swell video, bravo sir.
Thanks!

Great channel
@@KyleSVT yes it is and so is yours.
Thank you sir!
Sounds like a minor exhaust leak. Probably the headers it's pretty common on wranglers
Not that sound. It was more of a metallic noise I was talking about. Hard to hear on camera
I know this video is old, but that sounds like your sisters jeep has some valve lifters knocking! Currently happening in my TJ.
very well could be!
Its lifters. Famous 2.5 lifter tick
Nice jeep bro
Thanks Ben!
Just had an oil change about 300 miles ago is it okay if I use this in the oil? Or do I need to wait till about 3k miles??
I would wait unless you don't wind changing it right after like I did
The flag stickers are backwards. Stars always point forward. Not backward
Yes I will be fixing that for her soon

An old “Focus” fix?
My 98 jeep has an issue where it shakes when it hits 20
Dude what are the tiny yellow looking lights on the front of your jeep?
on the fenders?
How often can I do this? Like every oil change I do? Or like every 20-30k miles
you could do it every oil change if you would like
I plan on doing the same to my 2002 TJ. I have heard good things about Seafoam. Any negatives since you did this? Scott
not that I know of
Good deal. Thanks again.
np!
Those black rims or are they powder coated/painted?
Plastidip
that noise is the plastic timing chain guide is broke...the 2.5 and 4.0 are notorious for that...almost makes them sound like a diesel...easy fix
Do you do this when you have little to no gas in your tank?
Full tank
My 96 4.0 L wouldnt go past 15 mph. Sprayed half a can down the throttle body and running like a top now.
Nice video dude! Quick question, does your sister know the American flag sticker is going the wrong way? Thought I’d just point it out.
Thank you! Yes I'm going to fix that for her soon
It’s not going backwards it’s assaulting forward
The flag is flown that way on military uniforms because it is assisting forward. So it’s cool. This is coming from a Veteran.
Army Infantry Vet Here...
The flag is reversed as if moving toward the enemy and the wind blowing it backwards. Never Give Up, Never Surrender.
@@ryanmorgan5134 never give up murdering and pillaging bud!!!! never surrender to those third-world street market vendors!
Valve lifters, easy fix now . I won't go in to what will happen if not fix now , but do it soon.
Leaking exhaust manifold. Mine had the same problem. Been a while man, how are you
im great! hbu man?
Great man. Lol actually I was first. No but seriously l, either the one of the studs broke off in the head or its a leaking manifold gasket
dang that stinks
KyleSVT I could be wrong, but that what it sounds like. Just go ahead, take a flashlight and check for all the studs and bolts
oh the sound was more of a metalic sounds than exhaust leak
If you haven't already done so, please swap those flag decals. The stars go forward. Thank you, sir.
I thought so and I’m Australian
Go fuck yourself
@@curtiss1979 BWAHAHAHAHA!!! Nice comeback.

@@KyleSVT Cool...looks great.
What tires are those?
They are Kenda E Klever M/T
Try out Marvel mystery oil. Does a better job at half the price
What headlights is she running and how are they?
Sunpie LED ruclips.net/video/K7ZWoD6rawQ/видео.html
She doesn’t drive @ night so she doesn’t know I’m guessing is why he didn’t answer
Collapsed lifters. Had a 97 2.5L do the same thing. Sold it for a 4.0L haha
Might start shifting higher I normally shift around 3100
My jeep sounds exactly the same
Rocker arms! the bearing on them goes bad simple fix
Leak in exhuast
What size wheels does your sister have?
they are 17inch jk rubicon wheels
Double Ds
The 4.0 wouldn’t of made any notice until 300,000 miles
what tires does your sister have?
32inch tires I forget the brand
BFG Mud Terrain KM1
Wait nvm that's the spare!
Does your sister run wheel spacers for those JK rims?
yes
Oh same 😂
I thought JK was a different BCD?
piratemonkey there are spacers that convert from stock wheel lugs to JK lugs
What gears are in that Jeep 3.07s?
4.10s in the 4cyl 5spds
Previous owner of mine changed to 4:11's,not worth a damn on the highway, but a damn Billy goat offroad! Lol!
Every 4 cyl comes with 4.10s
That isn't true. Most automatic 4 cylinders (98-02) came with 3.73 gears and 4.56 gears for 03-06 4 cyliner automatics and 4.10 for 4 cyliner 5 spd manual
Aren’t the 2.5 ltr bullet proof so I’ve heard I want to buy my first wrangler lol
I would buy one with the 4.0L
I mean yea your right just this one is a reallyyyy good deal where I am and it’s problem free which is good for me haha
nice dude
Dont buy one with a D35 rear
Typical Jeep that’s why we love em. Character over function
I know this video is old but I can't believe you put two cans of seafoam through that thing and never once said anything about the smoke. LOL
First
GET RID Of the little snorkel on the airbox if you are not forging high water it restricts airflow put a good Fram paper filter in. K&N style filters are debunked with technology to many particles get thru and not much of a gain over other aftermarket filters, just over stock. BTW. Beautiful Red clean jeep
lol DONT put seafoam into a gas tank.
Its petrol based. Its totally safe
I normally just unhook a vacuum line and suck the can dry, cleans the top end out great!
