I just bought my TJ and this video makes me happy. I love that everything is so accessible and that I don’t have to jack it up. My Dad’s old friend was crushed under his mustang in a freak accident in the 80s and i’ve always been iffy about that ever since. This is a peace of mind video, man. Thanks. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the tip on turning the dipstick over to get a good read on the oil level. When the oil is dirty, it’s easy to see the level; but checking after the oil change when it is clean, I always struggled to see it.

Major point in getting a TJ for me, in 2003 off the showroom floor, was the AMC 4.0L / 242 inline six with 7 main bearings with crank girdle. Nice balanced motor w/ NO balancing shafts needed = smooth running engine=AMC's last hurrah before they were bought out by the somewhat nefarious Chrysler Corp.

Some Chrysler vehicles have a "thermally locking" oil cap: gotta wait for the motor to cool down just to remove it. What's done here on the 2003 TJ is just take the cap off and let it idle for 10 minutes before tackling the oil change. To get 1 qt. more of oil for the 4.0L, a 7" tall WIX 51773 with 3/4-16 Inch threads is used. Good video!

Yes warm the oil, in fact old manuals say "preferably immediately after a long trip" so all the contaminants are still suspended before they can lay down on the bottom of the oil pan waiting for the fresh oil to pick them up.

Something I've learned to do is to pre oil the oil filter. I don't add too much, just enough to get the inside of the oil filter wet. I believe that helps with any type of oil starvation that a new dry oil filter could cause.

When using synthetic, oil will still be good for up to 10k miles but oil filter is only good for 5k or so. I use a larger oil filter to help extend its life, specifically PBL30001, rated for 15k (or Mobil 1’s M1-301 if they don’t have Purolator in stock). Same treads as OEM filter. I believe it’s originally for a Ford Mustang. Seems to hold and extra half quart, so that’s good. Love that Pennzoil Platinum and love your videos and TJ. Keep it up! Hope this helps someone

I'd recommend buying some powder-free nitrile gloves for doing oil changes. Oil contains additives that are not good for your skin. Plus, cleanup after you're finished is much easier and shorter. No need for scrubbing your fingernails with pumice soap. You may get prune hands if you have sweaty mitts like I do, but that's a worthy trade-off.

Good and underrated motor that was on the drawing board before the 4.0L straight six.
A little under-powered for a TJ, but v-e-r-y reliable and it'll take you where you need to be when the more modern motors are junked. 2.5L four was better than it's 2.4L replacement that came out in 2003.
