We had the sweetest, most polite and handsome little chihuahua, named Stan, whom we got, from the pound. He was the best little dog and so quiet you could lose track of him. He would ask permission to come indoors, waiting patiently until invited in. He would ‘bark’ at deliverymen, going onto the porch to say, “woof, woof” at a conversational level, just announcing the mail. We miss him terribly.

As a former basenji owner I call shenanigan's on this one. While they may not give a full throat bark they are NOT that quiet and they are lively as heck. They were bred as a hunting dog and have tons of energy. My basenji could run rings around my Doberman.

My Bassenjis were not barkers but boy when they chortled, the neighbors thought someone was being murdered. I had one for 5 years (died of diabetes) and one for 12 years (died of old age). I can't say they were great dogs as they were escape artists, extremely energetic even in hot weather, and were very standoffish, even more than my cat. I will take my Staffy mix any day over either of them. She is not a barker, growler but a lover. She will lick you forever and lay on your feet, giving you sweet puppy dog eyes.

Basenjis may be known as a "barkless dog", however, they can be one of the noisiest dogs around! They can howl, yip, yap, and scream, etc. One of the noisiest dog shows I was ever involved in was one where there was a Basenji specialty. All the basenjis were crated together in one area of the coliseum and it was such a noisy area that we all had to try our best to avoid the area.

No, it's unfortunately not that simple. I had a cocker spaniel that got HOURS of exercise a day, and would immediately start howling and barking the minute I left. He also went nuts anytime he heard a doorbell, car horn, people on the street...

I had a delightful Papillon from the pound. He barked too much because the neighbor dogs barked. I built him a platform with steps so he could see outside, and he immediately quit barking and tearing at the curtains to see out when the neighbors barked. When he could see no danger, he didn't bark. My suggestion is to help them have a sentry position, they take guard duties serious. As he got old, I made him steps up to the bed and sofa too.
Now I'm old, I'm considering adjusting my front and back steps for ME.

Papillion's are such great dogs. I had a rescue one for many years. Paps do bark. Unlike many small dogs, they are very, very trainable. If you teach your Pap to 'speak', you can then teach them quiet. They learn very quickly. They are fairly quiet ---unless they feel under threat. She's protecting you or herself from threat. Mine was deaf and she hated flashlights at night. The barking over flashlights. Sigh. But I was able to train her to 'quiet' hand signals. And compared to a Pom or other small dogs, she was fairly quiet. But I wouldn't say no barking. But they have so many other pluses, I don't mind.

I have a toy poodle that I got from the Humane Society. He's 16, and I've had him 4 years. I have heard him bark about 5 times over those 4 years, and ever so briefly when he did.
I've had poodles since mid 70s (5 in all) and have never had a yapping dog. The other ones I raised since they were puppies, so I was able to imprint on them early. I would never allow any of my dogs to bark incessantly, although I do want them to bark if someone is at the door or making noise outside my house. It was so easy to teach them not to bark. But this last dog was 12 when I got him, so I didn't have the chance to teach him about barking. Turns out I didn't need to. So much for the unending stereotyping of small dogs. It really does get tiresome, but I guess people are going to believe what they want to believe.

My beautiful late dog (Chocolate Brown Labradoodle) who I unfortunately suddenly lost to leukemia in 2020 was none of these breeds. He was not a barker unless someone actually rang the intercom or you were playing games with him. 2 of my neighbors actually complimented him, telling me that when he is alone in the apartment, they would not even know a dog was living there because he was so quiet and content.
I believe there were 2 reasons for this. Has a young dog he was left alone at times and also had his first week in a kennel when he was 11 months old, when I went on vacation, and also, he was very loved and secure in his own home. All this helped.
My sister has a Bichon Frise, and it barks and whines if you leave the room, to the extent that it can never be left because it stresses itself out so much. This I believe is because she never raised it has I did my own late dog.
Also, I have always found it 'odd' how 'particular' cultures only seem to be attracted/own what I call 'purse/ handbag breeds.

We had basenji's for years. These are smart, marvelous, extremely loyal, loving dogs that due to their high entergy levels are wonderful for those living in the country and often terrible for those living in confinded spaces. They need to live with you and are TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE,TERRIBLE back-yard only or kennel dogs! They want to be on or under something, ours used to stay on top of their "peak-roofed" doghouse. These athletic, little beast jump like gazelles, ie. our female used to lay down under the bushes like she was asleep and then spring-up 6-8 feet and come down with a passing bird! They are cat-like/semi-domesticated, i.e. come when "they want to" and are almost impossible to obedience train, but will willingly follow and unless they "rolled in something," they are fastiously clean. They are fast as greased lightening, i.e. faster than any other dog you own in short distances! Basenji's are great sight hounds and excell at rabbit hunting - but need to wear bells so that you know where these barkless hounds are! Our female used to "step on the head of our shorthair" to wake him up to bark at intruders, i.e. the garbage men, while she stood next to the shorthair and "smiled"! I live in the city with a nice yard and won't own a single basenji, but if I lived out in the country, I'd have six!!!

I was busy in conversation with a fellow dog owner, this little pug was upset, because I have not had it or greeted him. Finally, he nipped my leg. He sat back and looked at me defiantly. I apologized. I gave him the petting he was looking for. Maybe I shouldn’t have, but all he was trying to do is get my attention. I wish she had barked, but he was totally silent. His daddy and mother was very upset. I reassured them that he was just trying to get my attention and wasn’t really a bite. There’s a big difference between a front tooth, nip, and a bite.

    Want a quiet dog?
    1. Get a larger breed without "small-dog-syndrome".
    2. Train it right.

I would have to disagree with the Pug not barking much
My daughter had four at one time, they all barked incessantly, two were even aggressive toward my neighbor.
Funny thing is that deer that came up to the fence ignored the Pugs even though the Pugs were barking.
The deer not intimidated at all by the barking.

This person obviously has never owned a frenchie, they can be very vocal even if they don't "bark" much persay. Basenji's as well are vocal even if they don't "bark" as they are literally known as the barkless dog. They do however yodel and whine which can be just as annoying while extremely cute. Having spent a lot of time around both, Basenjis do tend to be quieter than other breeds, but with Frenchies it's a crap shoot. If you get a conversationalist they will hardly be quiet as frenchies can be quite opinionated and will share those opinions....ROFL

Basenji's SCREAM, yodel, and basically sound like a murder half the time. THey also climb and open locks. Same with Shibas. Shibas are escape artists and not suited for apartments.

@@lgood4970 Never owned a Shiba but literally grew up with Basenji's as my mom raised them for show. The average basenji is quieter than most but get one with a little anxiety or ADHD and that changes quickly into very loud and annoying dogs...lol. Still love Basenji's but I wouldn't call them as a group a good apartment dog. As always it depends completely on the individual.

@@NerdyNanaSimulations I like my neighbor's basenji from many years go...but he screamed any time he was in the yard. Bloody murder. And he was super energetic. It wasn't a bark. But it wasn't exactly quiet. Perhaps his basenji was just more 'talky' that the average one. Nice dog--but so many weird sounds. Shibas are great, but are very, very smart. Can climb fences. I've met 2 that could unlock the gates or crates. If one tried to keep one in an apartment, they'd have to be kept mentally stimulated.

Whippets are gentle. But bred as a prey dog, sight hound class. Mine is gentle but I've seen her take & kill 2 groundhogs & a possum. They grab them by the neck and shake until the neck snaps. Then they sniff making sure it's dead & just walk away. It's what whippets were bred for. There's quite a few breeds that were bred to kill vermin

Yes. It's one of the few drawbacks of Paps. They will bark if threatened or territory invaded. But they are one of the most trainable small dogs and the barking can be curbed. I guess she was comparing them to POMS perhaps? They do bark less than Poms.

We have a Japanese chin Yoshi who is 13. I read they don't bark much either. Well the guy across the street has a security ( he doesn't know it,but if fed ex or he or his gf drive up the driveway. Bark ,bark. Usually chins snort a lot . Not because of their flatter faces , ask him if he wants something he'll snort . We had a king charles cavalier and yes they do bark ,a lot .The former owner of the house across the street also had security. Pugs bark alot. They have 2 down the street. Mind you our boys were well behaved ,they are dogs and if they do they do. Don't get a pup thinking it may or may not bark. 13 years on I'm friends with Yoshi parents owner, when we talk I always tell her she sold me a broken dog. He barks ,we laugh. It's all in the way you respond to him/ her when they bark and the reason they are barking.

It always amazes me that humans are the noisiest creatures on the planet. Not only do people play loud music, humans talk constantly. They not only talk, they have loud motors of all sorts. And remember, dogs and other animals have a far more sensitive sense of hearing. Our noises distress digs too. Humans also have developed electronic devices that we do not hear but the sensitive ears of our dogs do. Best to not get a dog if you want it to be mute. How about a goldfish?

I dont know i think it depends i hqve a boston terrier and a french bulldog and both bark at the sound of the wind hitting the window. While my boston is a full snorkler sounds just like a pig in the mud and my frenchie is just a plain barker killer watch dog that runs for the hills when confronted. My sisters chiuhahua on the other hand will not bark but will bite. Go figure!
