There’s no doubt that all dogs make great companions. It’s just that some of them, especially small ones, tend to be “yapping machines”, which could disturb the calm vibes in your household and maybe even get you a noise complaint from your neighbor. With that said, here are the calmest small dog breeds that are an exemption to the yapping stereotype.
    Pugs
Pugs are clumsy and energetic balls of fur so don’t be fooled by that lazy look they have. Their playful nature, however, is balanced by their couch potato persona. As much as they enjoy being active, they also love to snuggle with their owners and just lounge around the house. This makes them a great choice, especially if you’re living in an apartment.
    Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
This beautiful breed is the epitome of royalty. They’re born with a loving temperament and are quite the people person. Their gentle and extroverted personality makes them great companions. They’re also not barkers and are polite to any human or animal they meet. This makes them a great match if you have children or already have fur babies in the household.

My last dog liked to bark at people at the door, strange sounds and the mail carrier…every day! But I found that if I acknowledged him, and told him he was a good protector and thanked him for letting me know, he calmed down immediately. Sometimes, as in when there was a strange sound, I would go to the door and look out, and declare “it’s okay,” and this would satisfy him. I appreciated his barks, because he was just doing his job to protect me! I didn’t feel the need to chastise him for that.

Most Shih Tzus are calm so don't know why did they not make this list. Our late great Shih Tzu was a Zen master found on the side of a highway a matted mess. He barked only when someone came to the door. So wise he was able to read people's feelings and provide comfort when needed. I am no doubt idealizing him, but this was a widely held opinion at the outdoor terrace of the local pub. Luck brought us a Maltese Bichon mix(shelter). She is playful, sweet and affectionate. Maltese are known to bark but she is silent - silent - except when dreaming. I just hope a bark collar was never used.

@@larkspur77 we will never know if a bark collar was used on him. But I do know this- my 87 yr old Aunt who had many dogs absolutely adored him and told me I will never ever get a better dog! He was her comfort in her final days. And my husband whose had many dogs says he is the best dog he has ever had! We had to get rid of our dog when I was six due to allergies. He is the first dog I have had since then and I am in my fifties.

(5 years ago) I still miss him!!! I will miss him the rest of My Life!
He wasn’t a yapper. The only time he barked was if someone knocked or rang the doorbell. (If the sounds came from TV he alerted me) I would say Thank You and he would stop barking.

Corgis need a lot more exercise than "walk from time to time". They will definitely eat flies like flying candies as well. Some Corgis will be barkers and definitely not "calm" at all. One thing about Corgis is that they will shed like crazy year-around. More during spring and fall but year around. Yes, they are definitely cute and bring you LOADS of joy and happiness, but unless you are ready for all the other stuff, Corgis are not for you. There are lots of Corgis in rescue right now, so please look there first, if you want Corgis.

Whether the dog is yappy really depends mostly on their training and individual personality. For Yorkshire terries, I've seen plenty of yappy ones. But at the same time, I grep up with one that had no tendency of barking. The problem with small dogs is the fact that many people treat them like babies (not even children, as you shouldn't allow a child to do whatever they want).

True. Papillons are calm, well balanced, courageous, funny and generally very long-lived.
Mine was almost 18 years old and healthy as a fish when he perished in a house fire (my house). I was on a training weekend when it happened. My friend took care of the dogs. My sweet Cavalier King Charles girl also died. They were great dogs. Calm, obedient, affectionate and NEVER yappy.
I've never fully gotten over the loss.
My friend barely escaped asphyxiation. He kept going back into the burning house to rescue my babies.. Until two members of the fire department physically held him down on the lawn.
Nine years later, I still don't own another dog. Maybe it is time to let go of the pain though.

  • @Leelior

"Hence, they wont hurt anyone, not even a fly" Me: has flashes of that time I had a corgi hanging from the side of my knee for two steps before he let go. Yeah, the scar on my leg tells a different tale than that quote...
I was walking holding only him because he had even started to act out against the other dogs he was being walked simultaneously with suddenly. I don't know why that dog went crazy, but he steadily got worse at that daycare, and when he eventually had bit enough ppl to need a transfer he was apparently "fine" and hasn't hurt a fly.
My guess is because we walked one dog at a time unlike many daycares, now that he is walked with (I assume), more dogs at the same time he knows he is as good as dead if he acts up and bites one of the dogs or a person.
I don't hate corgis despite what I went through with that dog, but they are clearly still working dogs that need the output and job of one. There are a few more decades of goal oriented breeding needed before any meaningful shift into just pet will be made, I predict.

My first boy of 15 years, NEVER barked. He would "woof" softly if something was really off or wrong, but never a bark. He was also one of the greatest ESA dogs whom I took to my elder clients homes which adored him (RIP Boot my boy!)
My 3 year old girl now also does not bark unless I tell her to. I can tell she finds barking beneath her or simply unnecessary. She too has become an excellent ESA dog and working towards Service Dog as she alerts me to when my sugar is too high or too low.
Both dogs are Chihuahua's. This poor breed gets such an unwarranted bad rap. Too many humans treat them as human babies. Too many don't think of this toy breed as a "dog". They don't train and teach them as they would a big dog and thus the problems begin.
I was always a big dog person, but after breaking my back that is out of the question. The Chi is yes, intelligent as far as learning goes, but they have a cleverness about them that can be exploited. They are also playful; if shivering and it's not cold, not in pain or nervous about something that shivering is excess energy, play with them! Make them chase that toy mouse a few times and that shivering will stop.
Neither Chi of mine has ever torn anything up in the house, I will admit they can sometimes be a bit hard to potty train including later in life, out of the blue.
Common corks, going to get one piece of food, bringing it out to another room, tossing it about, rolling it with the nose then finally eating it. Sun siesta's a mucho! Drowning themselves under covers (no idea how they breath under there, but they do.) Want to go EVERYWHERE you go if it involves leaving the house. Can be quite independent will not follow you around the house unless they think something is it for them. Finally can be the greatest NetFlix couch potatoes known to man!
Best advice; SOCIALIZE MUCH when they are pups (that's with any dog though). A simple shush when they bark with a firm "No!" and they will cotton on sooner rather than later. Really smart dogs that aim to please. Once one has them properly "dog 101" trained, spoil away, they deserve it!

Don’t go for a breed, instead adopt a dog based on that individual fitting in well in your home. Need a dog thats good with kids, or will be on its own all day while you’re at work? Maybe you need a dog thats ok around livestock or to be a quiet couch potato for a senior. Whatever your needs are your best chance at getting the right dog is to adopt a adult from a rescue. Describe what your needs are and let the rescues near you know and let them help you find the right individual for you.

True, and adopting a adult dog from foster increases the chance of finding the perfect fit in your home as it’s already known if it has the characteristics that work in your situation. They would know if it is good with kids or not for instance, or ok with being left alone for hours, if it’s a quiet couch potato or a hyper active dog that would make a great running partner. Making a honest and through assessment of what your situation is like and describing it to the rescues near you will give you the best chance of finding your perfect match.

I recently went looking to adopt a dog, but the only ones I could find within a reasonable drive were either big dogs who could step over my fence without really trying, or extremely high energy working dogs (so many Kelpies and similar up for rescue in Australia - very sad), or dogs with issues that needed someone at home all the time, or to be the only dog in the house. I ended up getting a mutt puppy from a lady a couple of hours from me. He gets on fabulously with my Australian Terrier. Unfortunately, rescuing a dog is not always an option.

The corgi is definitely not a calm breed. This is a working herding breed. They are very active/hyper, and are very vocal and bark from instinct of what they were breed for, You also have to be strict with training not to bite/nip because that’s how they turn the herd. They are also a medium sized dog not small.
