Forget EVERYTHING You Think You Know About HONING! These NEW Abrasives TRANSFORMED Our OLD Hone...

- Just because you have an "old school" hone doesn't mean you're stuck with "old school" cylinder bore finishes. These new abrasives (especially the special deburring abrasive), can produce an incredible modern finish even on an old school Sunned CV-616, and it can do it all in less than .001 of an inch.
Forget about the old method of using conventional abrasives and taking out .001 to .0015 to finish. This process along with these abrasives allows for less stock removal and creates a longer lasting finish.

Excellent info, thank you! Still waiting for the honing tips for my harbor freight drill!😉
🤣thanks
I started that plateau honing back in 1982 in pro stock. This is a good refinement.
Thanks!
so your old af 😆
@@kuyaearly143 Yeah, I was building Pro stock engines before you were a brown stain on the mattress.
The diamond two step and then bottle brush is definitely worth power.
The first spec sbc 355 engine @500 hp we did 24 yrs ago we gained 8 hp. The second was up 11.
Be sure to use the correct rings for this finish.👍👍
There's a lot of Power and Longevity when you get your hone right....good stuff
Thanks
Lake Speed Jr, I grew up by Deer Valley Airport. Total Seal Deer Valley Airport. Used to be owned Deer Valley Airport by Art Linkletter.
Super cool!
Great info. Are y'all able to supply the ordering numbers for the abrasives used in the video?
Yes, contact the Total Seal office and tell them you want the abrasive kit. We have different ones for the different hone machines.
Ey good to see you here! I would LOVE to see a collab!
@@TotalSeal Make sure you check these guys out. You could make some awesome videos together.
Great news! Thanks again Lake for providing us with facts we can work with 😊
Our pleasure!
Great info. Keep that engine alive!
Always!
Great channels. I am in need of an education on honing and rings for alcohol engines. Input on oil needs and maintenence will help greatly. I am financing an Oswego super modified this coming year. Might make a couple of good shows.
Thanks! Call the tech department at 623-587-7400 for tech support.
What if you guys did an oil test simulating a leaky engine. How adding oil, say simulating and engine that leaks a quart every 2 weeks or so, changes the oil sample analysis or if it changes your oil change interval a little bit. And maybe how it could chamhe the life of the already existing oil or decrease power and increase wear. I dont know, just a thought.
Great video 👍🇦🇺
Thanks 👍
Good Stuff as Usual~
Glad you think so!
Very nice👍
Thanks!
Hey this might not pertain to this particular video, but I own a 2023 Dodge Ram Big Horn 5.7 V8 So the only oil you did not test Redline synthetic oil. And would you recommend ,Techron fuel system additive to help clean engine. Keep up the good work. Your knowledge and how you explain things to us as the viewers. It's outstanding.Thanks.
Thank you!
Fot the initial rough-in hone, is the diamond pads required? Will a similar grit standard stone yield similar results?
The Diamonds are required for this process.
I'm assuming that was a stock block to get the rvk that high with 170.
World products block.
I can smell that MAN-845 oil!
LOL
Try VALONA 2150 S and you'll never regret it, no smell, and very mild on the hands.
Can you tell me what the ring end gap will be with this ring kit with a fresh 4.030 bore ? CR3690GP 30. Thanks!
Why do my machines squeal when honing . Same machine same abrasives different fluid
Different fluids have differing levels of lubricity.
Quaker Cut 004PE works great with Diamonds.
Why put a head gasket between the block and the torque plate ?
It changes how the clamping load is distributed, so it is important for getting it 100% right.
@@TotalSeal Presumably you could use an on old, used one to save money
Is that man=845 they are using ?
Yep
i'd like to know where i can get those stones for a ck/cv sunnen..
Call our tech department 623-587-7400
How many strokes and load for the deburring abrasives?
5 strokes at 25% load
can you help us where to purchase those exactly stones? for my cylinder king CV616 sunnen
Contact Tennessee Abrasives.
Are these honing jobs and tips being done on steel cylinders or a nikasil coated type of cylinders? I ask because most of my engines are coated cylinders and wanted to know if you would use the same process
These are for cast iron liners and blocks. Nikasil is a different beast.
Lake,
If we're using a Sunnen GHSS head, what are the correct part numbers for the three abrasives? No one at PRI that I was able to talk to could tell me anything about that third abrasive. They mentioned some sort of Scotch Brite in the seminar at Rottler.
Sorry I missed you at PRI, but you were busy every time I saw you, and I hate to be rude and hang around like a vulture. I spoke with Keith and Ed briefly.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, buddy!
Alan, call Kenny Harris at Tennessee Abrasives. Tell him you want the Total Seal Diamond, CBN, Scotch Brite kit.
Is there a stone set for the handheld guys out here? Say the Lisle 15000 cylinder hone?
Nope, the handheld hones don’t have enough power for the diamonds.
@@TotalSeal I don't understand. The hone itself has no power, it's the drill you connect to it that powers it. 120 grit is nothing for even a modern cordless drill.
What am I missing in order to understand why this setup would not work fine? Sure, a machine shop would be better, but plenty of areas around the country don't have competent machine shops or wait times are 6 months +. Let alone finding one that can do this process.
I was thinking about it, hand honed block in combination with Total Seal - Total Conform rings seems like a match made perfect for all us diy. I would love to use the 1mm 1mm 2mm or thinner ring sets you've talked so much about and grab an extra 20ish? torque/horsepower.
@@donwasse7892 The CV and CK have 2 HP and have been said to be borderline for diamonds. A hand held drill/hone at 2 HP would be quite a challenge for even the strongest of guys.
@@deadsimpleband6922 that makes sense. Thank you for the information.
Is this hone for steel rings or moly rings? 🤔🤔🤔
It works for both!
77 Rvk? Methanol?
75 to 85 Rvk is perfect for methanol.
Boy??.. that's the worst background music I every heard on any automotive tic.
