Great re-issue. There was also a really great “programmable” phaser that was part of that line, as well as a compressor/ sustainer /parametric eq pedal. They should bring those back as well.
Your results replicate my exact findings! The new one is definitely brighter and clearer, perhaps a result of TC increasing the headroom of preamp? Regardless, I love the SCF; its my all time favorite pedal and when TC announced the reissue, I immediately ordered it- along with the recent special edition shiny gold version :) Cheers! Adrian
Future videos? Reverb, if anyone ever makes one pedal that does everything. Reverb drives me crazy - short trip! I have a ludicrous number of pedals. Polara, RV-500, RV-6, RV-7, Topanga, True Spring, Immerse, Blue Sky etc. They all do something well but none of 'em do everything. I should sell what is not on a board and buy a Big Sky I guess but I don't think it does a convincing surf-drip, does it? The whole MUST HAVE list would be: A Fender bright spring surf DRIP (without the Boss '63 harshness) - A Rockabilly Room Setzer-ish vibe - A Plain Spring with plenty of tweakability from prominent to subtle - A Chris Isaak 3D ambient wash - A wide stereo field that adds dimension to stereo delays without overpowering them - Everything available as a preset. So yeah - not a tall order at all. Last night I got a crazy good surf sound by putting the Topanga in front of my Marshall MG250 stereo combo. It's own onboard stereo reverb and stereo delay brought out the Topanga's surfy-ness and made it 3D. So, two reverbs going on. I have never found one pedal that could do that sound that well. The Polara, in the MG stereo effects loop, will do an absolutely stunning Riviera Paradise sound. Alas, no one pedal could do everything. Keeley's Halo does a great job of being THE one pedal for delay and I grabbed one immediately. Brett Kingman gushed about it - rightly so, IMO. But I can't find that same all-in-one package in a single reverb pedal. RV-500 comes closest. Stacked reverbs? Paralleled? Too crazy!
@@VertexEffectsInc I did. Excellent pedal. I also have the CR-7 beside it. I guess they "tried again" with the Polara, also Lexicon, and also discontinued. I dunno why. They have that built-like-a-tank quality feel and lush Lexicon sound.
Just bought a new one on-line yesterday. I live out in the sticks, no way to Demo one. Watched this episode just to calm my post-purchase/pre-receipt jitters 😢😅.
I'm pretty sure (as the owner of an OG TC Chorus Pedal + a 1210 unit), that the purple-label Chorus pedal here is itself either a reissue or a very late model. The OG series of TC Pedals (incl. Compressor/Sustainer, Distortion/Booster, EQ etc) were all-black with white, embossed writing. Either way, it's never left my pedalboard & is my holy-grail chorus (outside of the Yamaha UD Stomp). Lush sound, awful Flanger (imho) but a really nice Pitch Modulation too. Happy hunting to those looking for an OG, I might just have to buy the re-issue as an inexpensive substitute!
It’s actually the paint texture more than the purple square that delineate the vintage. No texture pain is a vintage version, textured paint is a later incarnation.
Any comments on using, setting, evaluating the variable preamp on these things would be welcome. How do others set it in line with a typical series pedalboard? I always set mine turned up about a quarter of the way on.
I usually try to set it at unity gain (no boost). Sometimes if you use in an effects loop you might have to knock it down more and make up the gain on the return. The easiest way is to put it in a true bypass loop and A/B it so you can nail the output to unity gain. You can also just unplug it and go direct to your amp to get a baseline on the output level. I would say definitely around 8:00 - 10:00 is typically unity gain (depending on the pot tolerance).
Hello Mason, great video, playing & comparison - thank you for your fine work ! Just a quick question: For pedalboard owners with a pre- and post-buffer (and everything else in between “true bypass”) would this buffered only pedal somewhere in the middle of the chain “mess” with the signal and/or impedances ?! Thanks in advance for your answer & keep up the great work 👌🏼 Regards from Hamburg (Germany) 🤗 Roland 🎸
I have two all black originals and I got the new gold one. Have not yet done a critical comparison. The new one sounds pretty good though on a few gigs, certainly more convenient.
The re-issue is more than just brighter in the upper frequencies. It's almost like there is some aliasing in the signal of the upper frequencies. Strange, almost a harsh element, but I may be hearing things. Are my ears playing tricks on me?
I have had this pedal for years, but always wondered why it didn’t sound very wet… Now I know why.. I was running it in the effects loop instead of the front of the amp…
The new one is definitely brighter, and less subtle than the vintage one, but I actually prefer it. This definitely has a good shot of getting on my board!
I hate to add to the "mystique of vintage" thing, but yeah - I prefer the old unit. But if I did not already have an old one, I'd be happy with the reissue, especially for $149. The old a/c cord is a pain. It was crazy long until I shortened it - reluctantly - but will also say it DOES save you a port on your power supply. I often have an a/c power strip somewhere on my boards.
Another great video. I thought TC was owned by Behringer now. If so, it makes sense they'd use those parts but I didn't know Boss was. That was pretty wild to find out.
the vintage one sounds more organic and warmer. It has more class like aged wine .The Andy Summer's part revealed it . But the cold brightness of the new one could be good for distorted tones...Luke loves that pedal with od/distortion
the level of production of this video (content, delivery, audio, video - can I ask what camera/mic you are using?) is through the roof. amazing job! thanks for your time
Great playing, however, this video convinced me to not get a Reissue, but instead bite the bullet and get a vintage one. Still, this video proves useful in that regard, so thanks a ton!
WOW! And a good price for this unit as well. I might have to pick me one up after I get my tubes in for my head this week even though they're out of stock but seems they have more being made on back order.
I enjoy your video’s Mason. I owned a true recording studio throughout the mid-90’s thru around 2006 when the home studio boom put me out of business, ive been playing music for 30 years & i studied electronics for 2 yrs in school in the early 90’s and I still find alot of useful info on your channel and i enjoy watching week to week (and yes i am subscribed). A video on vintage rack gear and guitar would be pretty cool. I like how they are starting to bring alot of the stuff we used in the studio into the guitar pedal world now; ie cxm 1978, Cali76, Free the Tone (2290 & Dyno Tri-Chorus), The preamp pedals like the Colorbox, Broadcast, Lauren Mustang & Milkman Poptop. Just awesome. I wish Korg would reissue the SDD delay aa a pedal again. Do you know any good clone pedals of the original Electric Mistress? I sure miss mine! Have a great one.
Hey Mel! Thanks for watching! Yes...there are some cool reissues and replicas coming out. The video last week on the RV-7 Reverb is a great one if you want the Lexicon sound that's more characteristic of guitars and not what was used on Blade Runner (CXM 1978). Equally, I always thought it was strange to use a pedal version of an 1176 and then use if first in the chain? What guitar player ever used an 1176 before the mic? I do like the Free The Tone 2290...in mono just like the OG version. I don't think anyone's fully nailed the Tri Stereo Chorus, closest I've found is the Red Seven Lil Wave, but it's mono. I typically just use the DC-2W these days for chorus and use it in the Dimension D setting. For the EXH Electric Mistress, I think Retro-Sonic makes one as does Past Effects.
I'm actually amazed that TC released this oedal at this affordable orice, if I remember correctly, the originals were sold new at boutique prices! Sooo, how does this compare to just using chorus and flanger on the plethora?
This was excellent Mason I have totally been curious about this pedal and very curious about the comparison with the vintage models… Takes up a lot of space in paddleboard for a horse petal but you know nothing else is doing it for me… Thank you!
Thanks Mason I had no idea they were only 140 $$. !!!! I have two vintage one but one isn’t working and the tech I know says he can’t fix it But he didn’t even take it and open it
I have two SCFs one from 80's and one from 90's. To my ears, they sound different from each other but not in a bad way, but reissue couldn't catch the "darkness" of the original pedal.
The circuits had changes over time...typically the all black (no purple square) is considered the original "vintage" version, however I've seen versions with the purple square which have the same PCBs and the all black version.
Thanks for this amazing video. Although both pedals sound very similar I think the older generation pedals are better for the hardcore true analog tone seekers. But the old units have already reached their goal by creating iconic sounds and value. Since the new item is a new item, the companies have to apply changes to reach some new customers. 😉
Well...both are true analog. But yes, there are some differences, no doubt. The newer version is brighter, but also the older versions are often out of calibration and are all over the place so it's hard to say how they might stack up if all are calibrated and new (but we don't have a time machine). I think the big advantage of the new version is the 9VDC for sure. There are some "vibe" and "vintage" aspects of the original that can't be fully re-created, we don't have access to the same BBDs then as we do now, but I think they're in an acceptable range if you want a great analog stereo chorus for $149.
I’ve had the SCF Gold on my board for a few gigs and I’ve noticed it adds a touch of compression in either bypass mode or on? Took it off the board last night and my amp dynamics returned to what they should be. Anyone notice this? Thanks
Noticed it too, it compresses a little and adds a little bit of harshness in the upper frequencies, even in bypass. Might be fine or even an improvement depending on your rig. I already had several buffers on my board so it seemed to take away from the tone, so I put it in a true bypass loop. But definitely not a clean bypass on this one.
What I like about my original one, is the input impedance, that enables me to even preamplify a passive Fender Rhodes piano - in a clean way. I don´t like the stereo-chorus not being mono compatible, which applies to many stereo chorus pedals, where the other side is just a phase reversed version of the first side. Use the choruses mono out only - problem solved. Only thing: It´s not "stereo" anymore..hmmm... I think all of this can be said for the reissue, too.
Your link proves that Amazon isn’t the cheapest place in town! I just ordered this using your link and found the price is cheaper by over $300.00 than what’s on Amazon!! It might be backordered with Sweetwater but it’s not worth $300.00 to get it sooner.
It could be used in a loop, it just didn't want to adjust the line level settings out of the line out or clip the pedal inadvertently. I also figured more people would use it this way.
@@VertexEffectsInc Oh I’d buy a reissue in a heartbeat. It’s a classic must have pedal. Ps. Enjoyed the “walking on the moon” sound. Dailed it in just yesterday. Such a great sound and song.
Hands down the original vintage SCF sounds way warmer and smoother. The reissue sounds real bad on the flanger and way more metallic on all 3 modes. I've used different headphones and listen few times. You did great job except for noticing the huge differences 😅
Agreed. Original’s mojo is warmer, and more defined, with virtually no clipping compared to the reissue. You can hear the depth and quality of the 120 vac original on Eric Johnson’s majestic recordings. The 80s really had it!
Been eyeing these, I thought they were about $300, maybe that was just the gold version. It sounds killer! I agree with your assessment of the differences in sound for sure. Maintains the mojo of the original, but yes some differences. Great pedal, liked the Walking on the Moon outro, legit!
I think eric johnson uses this TC Electronic SCR sets it to the flanger mode connects it to the echo/delay pedals FX loops only for the REPEATS, so only the echo REPEATS have the TC electronic flanger. You can hear this this on eric johnson studio records that the delay REPEATS have that TC electronic flanger. You should do a video lesson about this
@@VertexEffectsInc Which guitarists and songs use delays pedals with the repeat fx loop having effects only for the delay repeats? most newer delay pedals have an fx loop for the repeats to add effects to only the repeats. I'm not sure which guitarist use this and which songs use this feature.
I’m an HUGE TC Electronics user-almost all of my pedalboard is dominated by their gear. I have, like, 9 TC pedals, 1 Keeley Dyno-My-Roto, a Boss DS-1, a Crowther Hotcake, a Caline 10-band EQ, and three pedals whose manufacturers i can’t recall (a 7-band EQ, a noise gate, and a Little Black Buffer). Nonetheless, I’ve never heard of this pedal, and now I’m in love. If only it had a tremolo rather than a pitch shifter… Then again, wish into one hand and shite in the other, which will first fill up? I’m’na pick up one of these pedals . I love the sound of the reissue, quite frankly. Especially with regards to the flanger, the vintage module sounds comparatively anaemic, so for once I’m delighted to purchase the new version without feeling as if I’m ‘settling’. Thanks for a great review, mate.
I feel that if there is a difference it neither makes the new one better or worse . I never listen with my eyes but like every one that says that I am a liar, LOL. I think what would be cool is for you to set up the pedals but let someone else switch them so you have to choose which one is which. That way you only have one pair of ears to listen with. The others will be starring at the camera.😊
Has anyone ever told you that you look like Jack Black? Anyway, great video for I received this first generation pedal as a package deal when I bought a second hand guitar. It came with a Guv'nor by Marshall and a Heavy Metal by Boss (which I was told is also a first generation made in Japan). I mostly use a Boss Gt-1 pedal board and haven't even try connecting those pedals since I barely have the time to play nowadays. When the guy sold it to me, he said that this was Slash standard pedal (except for the Cry Baby)
I suppose if they wanted to insult how I looked, sure. I’m more partial to the Ricki Lake or Rosie O’Donnell comparisons. Sounds like you made out good on that deal. Those old Marshall pedals are worth a bit now! Same with MIJ Boss pedals.
@@VertexEffectsInc That thought never cross my mind but I am a great fan of Jack Black especially School of Rock. Thank you for the information, I know my gear a little better now.

In 1988,my live rig was two 100 watt Jubilee heads,two,4x12,’sTC Chorus, and one of those Rockman Stereo Echo half rack units in the loops…I remember the TC Chorus was pretty subtle, but it sounded great….I haven’t thought about that pedal in years until I saw this..
Sounds like a dream!
Great re-issue. There was also a really great “programmable” phaser that was part of that line, as well as a compressor/ sustainer /parametric eq pedal. They should bring those back as well.
They had some great pedals from this era!
Another killer video!!!
🙏🙏🙏
Another great video. Great playing. Bonus for Huff riff. Looking forward to the video on making each mode foot switchable 😃
Thanks for watching!
Your results replicate my exact findings! The new one is definitely brighter and clearer, perhaps a result of TC increasing the headroom of preamp? Regardless, I love the SCF; its my all time favorite pedal and when TC announced the reissue, I immediately ordered it- along with the recent special edition shiny gold version :)
Cheers!
Adrian
It's a great unit no doubt!
Great video. I had a 90s version but sold it a few years ago, the power was an issue for me. Will definitely pick up a new one.
They're great, so are the reissues!
Great playing bro

Paralleled? Too crazy!
Did you see our reverb video last week? ruclips.net/video/7LrRWvJ0cR4/видео.html
Generally speaking, you want a pedal that gives you something you don't already have. I'd say this qualifies.
For $149, can't beat it!
Great playing man!
Wow! Thanks!
Now my main 80’s/90’s magazine ad pedal fetish can come to fruition!
Hahahahaha!
@@VertexEffectsInc damnit man! You’ve got great taste.
@@luthiervandros 80's for life!
Hell yea! Can't beat that price even if it's half as good as the original!
Absolutely!!!
this is the pedal i've been looking 4 ages (really!) im gonna get it as soon as available 🤘
@@VertexEffectsInc gotcha!
I've put money down for the black re-issue, at my local shop. Thnx for the demo!
I thought the original s were black (no purple) and said “of Denmark” on them
Any comments on using, setting, evaluating the variable preamp on these things would be welcome.
Hello Mason,
great video, playing & comparison - thank you for your fine work !
Just a quick question:
For pedalboard owners with a pre- and post-buffer (and everything else in between “true bypass”) would this buffered only pedal somewhere in the middle of the chain “mess” with the signal and/or impedances ?!
Thanks in advance for your answer & keep up the great work 👌🏼 Regards from Hamburg (Germany) 🤗
Roland 🎸
I have two all black originals and I got the new gold one. Have not yet done a critical comparison. The new one sounds pretty good though on a few gigs, certainly more convenient.
Definitely well worth the price of admission for $149!
I heard a touch more brightness too. Somewhat surprised it took this long for a reissue.
Yes, definitely brighter, but not in a bad way!
@@VertexEffectsInc Not in anyway bad. I actually prefer a slightly brighter chorus/flange sound. This may be next on the must get list.
@@jpistolas Nice!!!
The re-issue is more than just brighter in the upper frequencies. It's almost like there is some aliasing in the signal of the upper frequencies. Strange, almost a harsh element, but I may be hearing things. Are my ears playing tricks on me?
Harsh? No. Most chorus' will cut bass and add top end. For clean tones, that is desirable for me, but I wouldn't call it harsh by a mile.
@@masongregory278 where do you heard clipping? Time stamp please.
Bought the reissue a few months ago. Works great
Great unit for sure!
I have had this pedal for years, but always wondered why it didn’t sound very wet… Now I know why.. I was running it in the effects loop instead of the front of the amp…
Already $159 and out of stock! Thanks for the great video
Enjoy!
You can also convert the vintage one to 18V as I did very easily!
@@VertexEffectsInccan we get a link on this conversion from AC to 18 volt?
Another great video. I thought TC was owned by Behringer now. If so, it makes sense they'd use those parts but I didn't know Boss was. That was pretty wild to find out.
Are they? Didn't know that.
the vintage one sounds more organic and warmer. It has more class like aged wine .The Andy Summer's part revealed it . But the cold brightness of the new one could be good for distorted tones...Luke loves that pedal with od/distortion
Great job on the comparison. Sweet playing too. Definitely more treble in the reissue, more hifi.
Thanks for watching
the level of production of this video (content, delivery, audio, video - can I ask what camera/mic you are using?) is through the roof. amazing job! thanks for your time
Wow, thanks! We're using a Sennheiser MKE 600 Shotgun Microphone and a two Lumix GH6's
Great playing, however, this video convinced me to not get a Reissue, but instead bite the bullet and get a vintage one.
Still, this video proves useful in that regard, so thanks a ton!
I got one, it was soooo nice, I bought it twice ! Now I have two ! (Same with my Vertex "Boost MKII).
Good choice! Thanks for the support!
WOW! And a good price for this unit as well. I might have to pick me one up after I get my tubes in for my head this week even though they're out of stock but seems they have more being made on back order.
Try also Reverb and Gear Exchange (Sweetwater)!
Retro Sonic makes a pretty good Electric Mistress clone ....
@@meridian2112 As said above :)
It sounds beautiful. I had one some 15 years ago and sold it, which i regret.
The reissue for $149...can't go wrong!
@@VertexEffectsInc WOW I didn´t know about this 149 version. I´m spoiled haha
I'm actually amazed that TC released this oedal at this affordable orice, if I remember correctly, the originals were sold new at boutique prices! Sooo, how does this compare to just using chorus and flanger on the plethora?
Plethora = fully digital. This pedal is fully analog BBD chorus. No comparison.
Would love to see a similar format comparing a vintage Memory Man pedal to what EHx is currently offering!
That'd be cool!
This was excellent Mason I have totally been curious about this pedal and very curious about the comparison with the vintage models… Takes up a lot of space in paddleboard for a horse petal but you know nothing else is doing it for me… Thank you!
This pedal really isn't that big, with top jacks it's no bigger than an MXR size 1590B box (like a phaser) once you put side jacks in it.
Thanks Mason
I had no idea they were only 140 $$. !!!!
I have two vintage one but one isn’t working and the tech I know says he can’t fix it
But he didn’t even take it and open it
They are very fixable - many schematics for the originals are out there and unless the BBD’s are shot - should be a simple fix.
What I´d love to see is Vertex version of the trichorus 😁 maybe sourcing the bbd´s from cool audio!
It’s a consideration
I have two SCFs one from 80's and one from 90's. To my ears, they sound different from each other but not in a bad way, but reissue couldn't catch the "darkness" of the original pedal.
The circuits had changes over time...typically the all black (no purple square) is considered the original "vintage" version, however I've seen versions with the purple square which have the same PCBs and the all black version.
When you use the tremolo and Flanger at the same time it is hard to know "what is what"
What Giant/ Dan Huff song is that?
Mason, what do you think is closer to Dann Huff chorus? The BOSS Dimension C or this pedal?
Thanks
Yes, didn’t like what the buffer did to the signal so took mine off too, gave it a kinda hard, less forgiving, tone.
Went back to the Corona, problem solved
Mine just arrived after a 3 month wait... Killer device!
The reissue is the same as the OG version as far as how it treats the mono and stereo outputs.

It sounded like the vintage had more high end than the reissue. But I'm getting one for my stereo rig. This is what I've been looking for.
Nice!
I own an original. The reissue does sound a little bright. But it sounds great. Thanks for the video.
It's brighter for sure...but also there are inconsistencies in the vintage versions and they drift over time and often become darker as they age.
@@VertexEffectsInc Oh I’d buy a reissue in a heartbeat. It’s a classic must have pedal. Ps. Enjoyed the “walking on the moon” sound. Dailed it in just yesterday. Such a great sound and song.

Can you please add the link to the set up you mentioned for this demo? I can't seem to find it. Thanks
I think the new version sounds boosted maybe a bit more ‘girth’?
Could be a matter of adjusting the input gain level
Hands down the original vintage SCF sounds way warmer and smoother.
The reissue sounds real bad on the flanger and way more metallic on all 3 modes. I've used different headphones and listen few times.
You did great job except for noticing the huge differences 😅
Ya, I didn’t care for the reissue Flanger either😢
Currently the black version is $159, the Gold version is $179. Jump on it while you can!
You should do a video lesson about this
I confirmed with EJ's tech that he only uses the chorus setting.
@@VertexEffectsInc the studio recordings he is using flanger so it might be a tape flanger effect puts its only on the delay FX REPEATS.
@@waynegram8907 can't say, all I know is it's chorus on this pedal.
If only it had a tremolo rather than a pitch shifter…
Then again, wish into one hand and shite in the other, which will first fill up?
Thanks for watching! Could be something that That Pedal Show does, that's sorta their wheelhouse.
@UCikGLR6GrrmDQJR4B_MDWKQ No not at all except that the latter one were made in Korea. I did not think that it made a difference for pedal effect like it does for let say a 1961 Stratocaster Made in the US and one made in Mexico last year.
