Yeah that's cool but my 94 1fz-fe powered (4.5 twin cam petrol/lpg) is still doing it's best at 562,000 km's, I absolutely love my fj80, as a teenager two of my uncles had these brand new and I fell in love with them, they were fantastic and still are......also they're just so cool 😎.
@@videomaker8207 it's really not that surprising. There's lots of old 80 series and patrols getting around with over a mil kms on the same unopened engine (1hd/td42) including the petrol and non turbo versions. Regular maintenance and keeping power within safe limits is really the key.. All these guys running around with stupidly high boost on stock internals are asking for trouble. The reason these 4wds last so long is because they were over engineered from the get go.. Pumping stupidly high boost through them brings you way closer to if not over the red line. Throw on sensible mods and detune so that you're still over engineered for the power you're making and she'll keep running for a loooooong time.
Bloody top review of this sick 80 sure do hope more 4x4s make it onto the channel. Yep its normal to blow black smoke from old diesels when ya boot em. In my eyes the 80 was the peek for the Landcruisers if you wanted off road capability with some road comforts but if you want the tuffest 4x4s that crawl Australia you need to jump into the Nissan's patrols find a tuff GU now you tried out the 1HD-ft you should try and compare it to the mighty TD42 kettle
The 80 is better in many ways than the Nissan, the Nissan has stunted engines, only the front gearbox is good! The 80 has good native diesel engines 1hd-t and 1hd-ft!
I have a triple locked 1995 HDJ81 with the 1HD-FT as well and it does not currently smoke like that under load and I don't believe that's normal. Mine was registered as a commercial vehicle in Tokyo. Perhaps the injection pump was tuned on the lean side for that area. I have a Gturbo and PDI intercooler coming, so I imagine I'll need more fuel and it'll get smokey. These are awesome and very capable vehicles. I highly recommend an EGT and boost gauge to monitor your temps.

The Black smoke points to either too much air or too much fuel or both. the 12v IHD-T tend to be Smokey, but the 24v IHD-FT should run pretty clean! Many factors at play here if modified under the bonnet! Looks pretty stock under the bonnet, not sure if turbo has been upgraded or injectors! TurboD is not about pure horsepower its about torque and that's a balance, if you want to go for high HP get a petrol engine, but off road diesel is King, esp in an 80s or a GQ/GU patrol.
had a diesel Sahara turbo in the Kimberley in ‘96. cruz speed open road was 140k. off-road it was unstoppable. was driven into the ground in three years.
The HDJ80 with the 1HD-FT is a fantastic vehicle... but this example isn't. Sooooo many red flags and warning signs to look out for.... Firstly that sort of paint job, the interior modifications scream someone doing modifications who didn't have a lot of funds (or taste) and that shows in the smoke coming from the exhaust. A properly tuned and well maintained 1HD-FT will blow very very little smoke and anyone who tells you otherwise doesn't really know how to tune them (That includes "sooty" from 4WD 24-7). While they are really fantastic vehicles if you are planning on buying one budget in around $4000 to have the injectors and pump rebuilt Plus another $500 or so to replace all the gaskets/seals (unless the previous owner has proof of them being done).
Ive owned mine for about 10 years. I've done many an off road adventure in it towing a fully loaded camper trailer. With almost 500K on the clock, it doesn't miss a beat. Mines a GXL non turbo Diesel 5 speed. I know I won't be parting with it as I think its perfect as a capable and extremely reliable 4WD. I think yours is blowing way too much smoke. Probably needs new injectors and you would love the manual even more..
It's blowing smoke due to the fuel system being set up incorrectly. You will be charged if you use it this way in Aussie. This model was NOT imported into Australia from new, the model imported was the VX with square head lights. I have the same model 1HDFT 1995 as this, ex-japan. Just coming up to half a million K, and runs like a 'Rolex'. I have been offered a small fortune for it, but why would I sell the best vehicle in the world.? 3" exhaust, Intercooled, Trans cooled, 3" lift, Cooper A/T3 285 tyres, Raptor coated in Black, A/C front and back, inboard fridge, heated seats.
Everyone loves these. If you get it with a petrol be aware that they do drink a bit more than the diesel but either engine in it is reliable as long as you change the oil and make sure it gets good fuel. If the soot is black then it's Normal, if it's blue or Grey then you might have an issue with the piston rings and other things too.
Pretty sure these are the 12 valve engines which are great but the 100 and last of 4.2 79s have the 24 valve variant which are cruiser fanatics favourite!!! Factory turbo 80s are going for crazy money atm, pretty hard to find one for under $25k even with well over 400k on clock
