How to Patch .IPS Pokemon ROM Hacks! // Lunar IPS to GBA Tutorial

- If you want to play Pokemon ROM hacks, you generally have to patch them. They come as a .IPS file, and you need to patch that on top of the .GBA file.
For this, you should use Lunar IPS.

@@EposVox I wanted to play OOF version (dont ask) then I saw it was .ips, changed it to .GBA, then it would appear on the emu, but would not function.

@@Luigi269 Yeah, that's not how you patch ROMs.
You need to use the program in this Video, 'Lunar IPS', in order to apply the .ips patch to the ROM.
The ROM will have .gba at the end.
Sometimes, ROMs are in an archive, when you download them from the internet.
Those 'archive files' are in the format of either .zip or .7z files.
You need to extract these archive files in order to get the .gba file.
On PC, you can use a program called '7-zip' or alternatively (albeit outdated), 'WinRar' to extract the archive files.
On Android, there is a program called '7zipper' for that.
You can also patch ROM's on Android by using a utility called 'ROM Patcher'.
On PC, you can use either 'Lunar IPS' for .ips files, or you can use 'Floating IPS' for .bps files.
You could also use 'NUPS' for .ups files.
.ips files can also be used on SNES ROM's, btw.
This tutorial here pretty much covers how SNES games are patched as well.
The only thing different is that SNES ROM's come as either .smc or .sfc files, whereas GBA ROM's always come as .gba files (unless you need to extract the files first).
Hope this was clear enough.
Whoever doesn't get it after watching this tutorial here and reading through my explanations here shouldn't be allowed to use electronical devices in the first place... this isn't rocket science, after all.

I'm trying to play FR Omega and following the steps correctly but it isn't patching properly. When I open the patched gba file, it shows regular FR but it's glitched (purple Oddish as Oak's pokemon) and it's a black screen after creating the character and entering the world.

Does this work on already hacked ROMs? I want to add a mega evolution patch (.IPS) to my FR rom hack, I already worked on it a bit and if possible want to avoid redoing it all in a clean rom (Again). It tells me which offsets it edits and I made sure they are clean

Whenever I try to apply a patch to a game using Lunar IPS, it says it's successful. However, whey trying to run it, the VBA says it can't run it and it's an unsupported file type. The original ROM runs fine, but the patch will make it impossible to open again. I followed all the steps in the video, so I'm not sure what's going wrong here.

For some reason, Lunar IPS is saying my patch file isn't .IPS despite the fact that it IS an IPS file? I don't understand why it's doing this, because it'll be able to patch with other IPS files just fine and there isn't anything wrong with the ROMs I'm using to patch it over with. I tried patching with a similar program, Floating IPS, and the same thing happened. Do you know what's going on? Is it corrupted?

I did everything right after another as shown in the video, but when I go to load up my Emulator, everything works fine for a few seconds then it just becomes a black screen. Do you know the reason?
Two potential fixes:
1: Once you have the game loaded in the emulator, go to Options > Emulator > Save Type > Flash 128K.
2: On VBA go to Options>Emulator>Click Real Time Clock.
This makes VBA use your PC Clock as its clock and will fix your Pokemon game because it requires the GBA to tell it what time/day it is because certain games, like Pokemon, have timed events like the bug catching contest.
If these don't work, try getting your ROM from another source - the ROM itself may not be a good copy.

I'm having a ton of difficulty still. My rom hack that I'm using to practice is a .zip. I have no idea how your rom hack at 1:40 is showing up as a .ips. I would really appreciate some more guidance.
I saw your other video on unzipping. But when I set my rom hack to open with 7-zipFM, it still does not open as a gb title, and instead stays as a folder without any suffix.
Yes a zip is an archive, not a rom patch. If there's a folder in the zip, then you need to open the folder and extract whatever's in it.
Thanks for the reply. This is what I'm working with: I am using a gender select rom hack of pokemon red to practice if I can get this to work. I have a ZIP file that is called Gen1GenderSelect.zip. Double clicking it gives me a folder of the same name but without the .zip. Clicking on that folder gives me two files that seem to end in ".xd..." One says red and the other blue. How do I extract this stuff? The usual extract all isn't there when I right click.
