A chinese woman made a twitter thread about how inaccurate the movie was culture wise so the argument that they cut out a bunch of stuff for culture just hurts much worse.
Mustiboi Salman And Frozen. The sequel is so god-awful. It’s quite frankly one of, if not, the worst Disney movie I’ve ever seen. I know there’s probably worse, but that was just a stupid continuation of something that I bet didn’t need a sequel. Ralph Breaks the Internet was stupid, but at least it wasn’t trying to make me go absolutely insane (unless you count the stupidity of the movie that might make me insane of course) But still, Disney is just dead to me. I’ve had enough. I’m done.
@@largeformatmaster2994 my family and i were at the movie theater and we Paid a lot to watch it. We did a vote. I wanted a good movie, and they asked for garbage. Guess which. Movie won the vote.
"We cut Mushu out of the movie because we wanted to be more realistic"...... The movie starts with a little girl doing parkour across rooftops, we have a witch that transform into a dozen birds and Mulan doesn't prove to everyone that no matter your gender you can push yourself forward and improve upon yourself and prove everyone that even in a toxic male environment a woman can also shine....but instead she just born with magic powers...
They mean the 'cool' type of 'realistic', as in super in your face gritty and dark and absolutely no humour or whimsy or colour in any way so you know this is the 'grown up's' version of Mulan.
@Chin Wing LIU Because they never tried to be realistic with those ones, they said they wanted this to be “realistic” but it ended up as a waste of money
You can tell Schaff's angry when he doesn't use as many Tamatoa pictures in his review. Not a SINGLE frame of his face is enough to truly express the anger within.
Indeed! Mulan 1998 is much more darker and have more emotions. And also I want to mention as well the time when there was a 2 soldiers that Huns caught and they were ask to send a message to the emperor but they only let them deliver it by one soldier. And one of the Huns shot down the other guy while they were running. Damn
Um ok imma be real, I did not expect this to reach 200 thumbs up in an hour. ThAnks FOR tHe rEddit GolD Kind StRangers. I will just move this to the bottom if anyone wants to continue the chain BTW
Something else I hate is how the main villain dies. In the animated version, he gets launched into a bunch of fireworks and exploding in a fire of colors. Cartoony, but somewhat realistic. You can absolutely die from fireworks. In the live action version, the emperor catches an arrow flying at him at top speed like an anime character, throws it, and Not Mulan kicks it with enough power to pierce and kill him. They absolutely butchered it. No other words for it.
As Zuko stated, in the best of my memory, "I was lucky to be born; she (Azula) was born lucky." Literally what live-action Mulan said. You gotta be fuckin' born lucky just to be a hero.
exactly! and if the editing is on point i wouldn’t notice anything since it looks realistic. the editing in this movie is so bad i notice it like almost every 5 mins omg
I feel like Disney is so afraid of media nowadays. In most of their recent movies you can’t go 5 seconds without them trying to shove the idea of feminism *down your throat so far Cardi B would be satisfied* .Now, I’m all about feminism and woman’s rights, but Wholy shit your a kids company that’s supposed to have these hidden messages and meanings. At least TRY and make it subliminal Wholy crap.
Also Mongol women being kept out of battle lmao like I’m not gonna go around and say they were feminists but the idea that women fighting was alien to them is ridiculous
The worst part is they gave up actual entertainment for female empowerment here, but... *They failed that too.* Not every woman has chi running through their veins that magically makes them good at everything. So how the fuck is this supposed to inspire them?
The best thing about Mulan as a character was her determination and capacity to face challenges, but they took that away. They threw away what really made her a strong woman and gave her superhero powers instead.
We should have a movie where the main character is an emotionless Mary Sue that later gains a personality or emotions, probably through male influence- oh wait that’s Wonder Woman
You know, I've been thinking about this for a long time. You mention that the cricket gets all the hate in the world for ruining Mulan's chances with the matchmaker and not Mulan herself. That is true and the cricket deserves it, but why was the cricket given to Mulan? It was given by her Grandmother based on the belief that crickets give good luck, and we clearly see this belief is false. And with that understanding, a gong went off in my head. This theme, the idea of traditions being flawed or even counterintuitive is shown all the way throughout the film, not just in the human charecters, but in the story beats as well. Going back to the grandma, her belief in the cricket's luck is almost hypocritical as her first line is her chiding the mother's worries. ("I should have prayed to the ancestors for luck." "How much luck can they be? They're dead.") It is true that she crossed the road, but that could have happened without the cricket. Mushu is the only one of the guardians we see and from minute one, we are shown is unhelpful and pathetic at his job. (Rip Fa Zane). During the training montage as well, the most Mushu tries is cheating. And when he tries to awaken The Great Stone Dragon, he does so with no reverence, no care to this being it is hinted is far above anything he could have been. Speaking of The Great Stone Dragon, this thing is given such importance, such reverence by the family and ancestors. In the scene before Mulan's haircutting, we see her beside the statue, sitting in it's lap as a child would a comforting parent for guidance. And yet she makes her own decision after seeing the turmoil of her actual family. And the final nail in the coffin is that this great statue is just that, a statue, broken by what is reguarded as a failure of a spirit. But the biggest thing that cements this all is how Mushu ensures the troop goes to war; not by magic trickery or spiritual divination, but by disguising as a human messenger with news. In short the animated movie is the theme 'magic doesn't help you win' done right rather than treating it as a wink to the audience.
it could be argued that cricket ruining the meeting with the matchmaker *was* good luck as it set in motion the series of events that led to Mulan saving China, though I am quite a fan of your take on things too
I was already uninterested in this movie because it's a live action remake, but then I find out they completed omitted the iconic hair cutting scene with the banger 80s synths and now im INSULTED
I'm literally not sure if I should actually be watching it just to see if it's legit bad as everyone is saying.. but it honestly feels like a waste of time to even try and do that lol (Also I love ur content! ^^)
@@xoshanland It's on their remake list, but it probably won't come out for a long time due to Covid. Hopefully they learn from Mulan because it lost a ton of money trying to be both Chinese and Westernized at the same time. Hunchback should relatively easier to adapt since its more similar Les Miserables than Mulan.
@@ausername8699 it's a bad idea because scary big shoulder man would scare the toddlers that are watching because their grandma bought the wrong DVD instead of the real Hunchback of Notre Dame. All the Disney live-action remakes are just cash grabs
Has anyone read the actual tale? Because I have, and there’s very little in it. It’s not an epic novel. It’s a ballad. It goes roughly like this: “There’s a war. My father has no sons. I’ll go to war. We won. The Emperor offers me a promotion. I go home instead. After 12 years, you didn’t know I was a woman.” There’s nothing beyond the barest bones of a story, and only three characters are mentioned.
@@hinaw0w395 yeah, apparently she got promoted 10 ranks and went 12 years undetected as a woman. They only found out once they visited her home and saw her in make-up and a dress. Part of Mulan's ballad was talking about how differences may exist between men and women, but in the end, when they are living and fighting side by side, why do those differences matter? Something along those lines :)
*The viewers to Disney after the remakes:* "Are they blind?.. Suffering from some form of brain damage?" ( I just did a reference to your profile pic, but it fits. )
Also, even her wits needed some refining, she was only using her talents to be a lazy loaf, which only lead to messy halfassed jobs and her getting very lost if she was not allowed to cheat her way out, the board game clip showed her untapped potential as a problem solver, and the training helped her strengthen that aspect of hers, while also greatly reducing her weaknesses, making her all the more balanced and capable
@@citruxii3625 The dragon in chinese culture is meant to represent the emperor, iirc. Which was a large part of the problem chinese audiences had with the original disney film.
Antique R0se that’s confusing to me because Mulan has always been associated with dragons. Her family’s spirit guardian is a dragon, she uses dragon-shaped fireworks to fight the Huns, the medal she gets from the Emperor has a dragon on it, etc. But for SOME reason, they changed it to a phoenix because... I don’t know! Symbolism of being reborn, I guess!
Hello, I work for Disney, and I'm proud to announce that we're remaking The Princess and The Frog. We're getting rid of all the magic, because we want the movie to be as realistic as possible. Also, we're getting rid of Prince Naveen. And we're getting rid of all the references to racism, since we want this to be a family friendly movie. We're also getting rid of all the music. And literally any sound. There's now a brand new character who can transform into an army of frogs, and she's also the main villain.
I was at my dad's house on Labor Day, and he said "hey why don't we watch Mulan?" And hey, the original might be my favorite Disney movie ever made, and I may have been religiously avoiding everything about the live action version since its announcement, but HEY: it can't be that bad right? Watching the live action movie felt akin to having my soul sucked out in real-time. I couldn't agree more with EVERYTHING said in this. Bravo.
@UCi_WHT-mh8aRI9FsKnF8cdQ wait you do know he doesn't actually mean he may even like other movies and irrelevanttly saying it to make it sell more because that's marketing is it not
This movie is basically saying: 'girls, you don't have to grow, change, and learn from your mistakes as long as you're badass. And just to be clear, only badass women can be heroines.'
this movie was supposed to be “empowering” for women, right? well, as a woman, i’d like to say... it failed spectacularly. there’s nothing fun or charming about it, and nothing sticks with you like in the original. mulan and the rest of the characters have the personalities of cardboard here.
Imagine having a remake with an actual effort to be empowering, but in actuality the original version was far more inspiring without even giving a shit.
1998 : Hard working, butt kicking female who trains along men and who starts off her training experience making mistakes but keeps working and trying and uses her smarts and self discipline to get better and improve.... Never gives up! 2020 : M A G I C
I am a straight man. Mulan is one of my favorite Disney movies of all time. 1998 one. In that version she had something called character growth. She starts out as bumbling somewhat of a disappointment to her parents who doubts her worth in the family. Yet she deeply loves her family enough to the point of going her fathers place where impersonating a man would mean death. She is weak physically at first bad at anything martial and yet with time and training she grows stronger and earns the respect from her fellow soldiers. She leads by example and puts her life on the line to save China her friends and most importantly her family by going to shoot the cannon by herself. She is revealed to be a woman and banished. She again saves China well at least the emperor. When she gets home she is accepted well more so haha and she’s confident to approach li Shang for dinner. The songs are awesome the set up etc. it’s funny it shows mass death wounds war fighting. It also shows the amount of sexism that has existed historically in which women have been oppressed and how she overcame stereotypes and earned respect of men to show the strength all women possess. Yet this movie screwed that up. She’s a Mary sue who is the quote unquote the secret weapon from the start. The whole shell die is not there. There is no character growth cuz there’s almost no character. Obviously I was very very disappointed with the remake haha.
Me: Damn, I'm not digging this new editing style Schaf is experimenting with. It's too jumpy and makes my eyes hurt. Schaf: I did not edit any of the shit you're seeing on the screen right now. This is all how it looks in the movie. Me: Oh... Oh no.
Lmao Chinese action scene goes BRRRRRR *my dad watched a lot of kung fu movie. At least the old ones. And it's basically **-swish swoosh cling cling cling-** I do not love you mother, you killed my sister - flies then swoosh - then you are not my father*
This reminds me of that time someone tried to make an airplane after the Wright Brothers did it, but got rid of everything that made the plane fly. It was in the air for two seconds before dropping at least 60 feet.
As the person who gives this the 100th like: Mushu, Shang, Yao, Ling, Chien-Po, and Mulan being a well done protagonist who becomes better through her determination - Not realistic enough. Wall-running Ninjas (Ninjas being a JAPANESE thing), Shapeshifting bird-witch, a Phoenix that looks like a fucking dollar store piñata, and making Mulan into a Mary Sue and trying to excuse it with Chi magic - Apparently realistic. I guess, according to Disney’s logic, we’re living in a fantasy world.
@@heihogreenzx4704 also it's hilarious how they wanted their money makers, the Chinese audience, to like this movie so they made it "more focused on Chinese culture" than the original but for ex the Phoenix, ot didn't match the Chinese interpretation at all but more on the Egyptian one, the fact that people in China also hated this movie and the fact that it's even less culturally accurate than the original is just something else
@@heihogreenzx4704 and they all grew stronger because they all supported each other, they went from weak misfits to a powerful force when they stopped fighting and started working as a team Whereas in this movie, everyone else just exists and is irrelevant, and Mulan is already perfect since she was a little girl, all she does is just obey when to use her powers, and being a model soldier
@@heihogreenzx4704 the way they even use the so-called "chi" is completely wrong because it's a reference to blood circulation. Makes me want to bang my head for the writers to say that "you must be honest" or smth along the lines. It pisses me off
I originally thought this was going to be a historically accurate version of Mulan and that reason they removed mushu and the songs was to allow for a more accurate and serious movie. After watching it I realized no this is just Disney’s mulan but striped of everything that made it great. It, like all the other live action remakes, is nostalgia bait nothing more.
Nostalgia isn't the only purpose. It's also to let the kids in this new generation know about the movies. I was upset when my youngest sister watched Aladdin AND Beauty and the Beast (animated) the first time and said "isn't this like the movie with the real people?" (Live action remake). But although the live actions are nothing more than for nostalgia, the thing I mentioned and mainly money, not all of them are bad. I personally enjoyed beauty and the beast and Aladdin.
Yes exactly! I’ve honestly hoped for a less racist version of it that would’ve still allowed all the heartwarming relationships and jokes and ideas shine through and maybe the original soundtrack too! So far I havn’t watched it nor read any reviews, but I do trust schraffilla and was shocked by the scenes he showed on screen :///
The ironic thing... is that I would be 100% fine with it if they made a 100% real life non- magical non fantastical Mulan film. An epic story of a woman in an army... But nah... lets make it even LESS realistic than the animated version.
If it would be an historical accurate movie I would watch the hell out of it. Like I love historical dramas and having one with a strong female who goes secretly to the army? Yeah golden.
Mulan (1998) is my favorite Disney movie of all time. Mulan (2020) is my inner demons in the form of film. When I watched this for the first, only, and last time I seriously felt the urge to pull out my eyes.
What makes this even more funny, is the fact that the movie implies without these Chi powers of hers, she would not be on the same level as men. Basically saying, that without them, she can't match the men. SHE NEEDS SUPER POWERS TO MATCH WITH THE MEN. Meanwhile, in the animated version, Mulan trains with the men, gaining the same training and experience, and on the same level because she earned it through hard work, and dedication. NOT BULL**** CHI POWERS FROM THE F***ING UNIVERSE OF BULL****!
Mulan not having any need for a training scene is by far the most insulting part of the movie. What makes the original Mulan so good, is that she trains her ass off to be as good as her peers until she eventually starts getting even better than them. Love action basically says; “training scenes? Who needs that shit? OBVIOUSLY magic is why she’s so good. Fuck current Disney
and took her hair out of her bun? Like I know they where try to do a girl power thing or something but I'm pretty sure hair in your face during battle is a sure way to get killed.
Ah but you see, this doesn't take place in china. It takes place in the china region of catachan, because you'd have to be living in Warhammer 40k for that to make sense.
Disney said no to a talking dragon to be realistic, okay fine i get it, BUT THEY PUT A WITCH THAT TURNS INTO A HAWK AND BATS AND OTHER PEOPLE? cmon now that's sum BS mushu was my favorite character
Biggest pet peeve with this movie. In the original the whole thing was “women can do what men can do, but because of the world you have to work harder, and constantly have to prove yourself”, in the new one its “woman can’t do what men can do, but some can, if they have ~magic~, but only if they have ~magic~” 🤦♀️
"No matter how the wind howls, the mountain cannot bow to it." That line is from the original Mulan movie, from the Emperor, an important but fairly minor character. And that alone is more memorable than this whole "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" wannabe.
And that is the mark of good character - every character is treated like a protagonist, that has personality, fears, and hopes. It's why I love books by Brandon Sanderson.
That analogy works well to Disney. They are the mountain. Critics are the wind. As long as mountain grows bigger with money. More and more inferior remakes emerge.
what i believe made the original mulan so special was mulan herself. she didn’t get free passes, she trained with all the other men and still was able to prove herself a strong team mate. team mate, not person. she fought within a team, where she relied on her partners and they relied on her. she didn’t become ‘better’ than everyone because of some magical chi, she worked hard and it payed off. this remake just makes a mockery out of it.
EXACTLY. They take everything that I loved before but I said to my self let's give a chance. Well. I WAS WRONG! I love Mulan because she did battle in every part of the movie, she did her best, she never give up, even when it's world against her. Her family is far away, her friends are disappointed with her, the man she loves and admires it's felling betrayed, she lost everything, and yet she choose to get up and fight for her country and for the people that she love.
its almost like characters growing, needing to face actual challenges, and having depth make good characters. Here we have someone who was a physical god from the start for bullshit reasons not being challenged or showing any particular prowess other than "im just good at it", not interacting with or deeply affecting other likeable characters, who shows next to no emotions, and faces few threats (like the baddies causing the avalanche themselves to prove their incompetence).
It's just not relatable. When I watch Mulan training in the original movie, I feel empowered because we watch her go from being one of the weakest, someone more at most regular girls' level, to being a strong warrior just like the guys. Giving her chi just tells us, "Yeah women can be strong, but only if they have magical powers."
@@jpHasABadHandle No,it's a shitty rip off Except it's actually probably not a rip off and it's probably juat trying to trick people into buying it cause they it's Ratatouille.
"This crosses the line from bad to insulting." Could not have said it any better myself, this is a slap in the face to all the original movie stood for.
When you remove a character's struggle for improvement, it makes them less relatable, less human. The original Mulan may be a 2d animated charachter, but she has 3 dimensions to her personality and motivation. The lifeless stilted flesh puppet in the live action movie is about as complex as my left thumb.
You beat me to it. Mulan was always my favorite disney princess growing up, and what made her so cool to me was how much she had to work and struggle and suffer to win. My favorite moments in the movie are when she's at her lowest, when she fails or makes a fool of herself, because those moments made her relatable. And it made me see myself in her and want to root for her, making it so much more satisfying at the moments when she did succeed. It's such a basic, universal rule for writing that when you create a character, you have to give them character flaws. How did they mess that up so horribly?
You can actually watch Mulan: Rise of the warrior on YT!! I watched it last night and its a wonderful film, it has English subtitles only tho. ruclips.net/video/8j1aWcQpAOA/видео.html
This remaking process by Disney is starting to feel insulting. I image them sitting in chairs around a table talking about their plans to make the next billion dollars they don’t need and it goes like “So we haven’t made a Mulan remake yet? What do y’all think?” And the next guy goes, “Yea but I’m bored of that let’s see how much we can get away with before there is an actual outcry!” And another rich dude is like “Yea let’s not give it music!” “Let’s not even bother to give it heart,” “Let’s not care really about cast or performance!” “Let’s take as many characters out as possible while still being able to pass it off as a remake!” And they did and we got this and it’s a mockery
The best part of the animated Mulan was the fact that Mulan wasn't magical or special, beyond her tenacity and intelligence. She manages to succeed because she finds unconventional solutions and refuses to give up. Take that out and what the hell is even the point??
Plus that her unconventional solutions do not make her overpowered. Like how she fired at the mountain instead of shan yu to win the war, yet that made the guy survive in the end. It is a depiction of actual human decisions and not just what the plot wants for it to end.
Yea, she was like anyone else which stuck out to us growng up that even being like everyone else we can succeed at something but nah just make her magicial because only special people can do stuff
this is the most sexist movie I have ever seen instead of Mulan training to fight like the on others she just naturally gifted and instead of her using her intelligence to get out of problems just use your muscles oh what you want to be an empowered woman but your not as strong or as naturally gifted in fighting like a man I mean like Mulan well too bad just go get married like Mulan sister.

Federico Arrojo its alright.. it didn’t flow good at all and it should be watched as a film on its own and not like the original cartoon movie at all since its more based on the original poem from China
I find it so funny that Disney took out elements like Mushu for being " unrealistic and disrespectful to Chinese culture" but one of chinese people's favorite western (animated) movies is Kung Fu Panda, a movie about kung-fu fighting anthropomorphic animals with several stereotypes about chinese culture.

Hold up, Goku trained for the power he had (Mostly, and even than he admitted to everyone around him that he wishes to train and fight with his own power and hates shortcuts.), has an actual character in the original Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z and barely wins any of his fights by himself in Dragon Ball, Z or Super. Meanwhile, Live action Mulan has no character, wins every single fight and Is a complete Marry Sue.
Difference is gokus strenght was funny and played for simple action since the battles weren't always the point. And when battling did become the point he actually worked and trained to reach new levels of power. Mulan can just do whatever because shes a woman main character in a disney property. I cant deny the Bayonetta thing tho since i dont play Bayonetta
The CGI is also so bad, that spider in the tea scene was so fake looking and all of Mulan’s skills when she jumps on the roof and catches the cups looks so fake it hurts me
Probably because of this movie's color palette. I don't watch it, but Mulan 2020's color palette is kinda vibrant, warm reddish without that much of dark/shadow. There are reasons why most CG looks good at the theatre or dark places.
Disney: We are inspiring girls, go girls! Also Disney: Makes a female character who has special abilities and doesn’t need to even try to succeed. Great job Disney! I feel like a very empowered strong feminist woman girl human!
No same. One of the reasons I love the original Mulan is the fact she wasn’t as strong as the other guys and that she had to prove Shang wrong in order to earn her place to stay. That was empowering. This Mulan is nothing like the original character.
@@sophieamandaleitontoomey9343 I know! The original movie wasn’t “realistic” or anything, but it felt attainable, like if I worked hard enough, I could find my place in a male-dominated space. The original sequence where Mulan leaves is my favourite part of the movie, it gives me chills, especially thinking about that tumblr post that points out how Mulan is consistently juxtaposed with dragon imagery which suggests she is the guardian spirit of her family. Also the random Chinese characters on her sword in the live action are something like "loyal, trustworthy, real" and it sounds like a crappy manufacturers slogan lmao
The score that plays during that sequence is probably one of my most favourite cinematic scores of all time. That crescendo when the camera zooms into her face and cuts to her walking to the ancestors' shrine with rain water dripping from her gives me chills every time.

It's still computer animated. So with that in mind, it shouldn't even count as a live action remake. But it is still one of the worst films Disney has ever made.

@@Thastormable Not to mention the cultural can of worms with a black man voicing an ancient Chinese dragon... can I have my 90s back please? They weren't perfect but they were far more tolerant.
The two scenes I feel they failed the most are training scene and the village scene. First the training scene, in the original, we see our cast of characters be really bad and them struggling. They're trying to improve, but Mulan is pretty much told to leave because she's falling behind everyone else's progress. So she decides to go for the arrow, realizing the proper technique is important not just pure determination. And by using her smarts, she gets the arrow. This marks a turning point and we see everyone actually becoming good! What did the live action do? Mulan walks up a hill with water and succeeds on her first try. She doesn't struggle, she uses her fucking magic powers. This is also very similar a task they did while training in the animated one, where everyone else was going just fine. BUT NOPE! This time Mulan is the one who succeeds while everyone else struggles. I don't think there's a single scene in this movie where she gets better at anything, everything just comes easy to her thanks to her chi powers. How do you expect me to root for her when she stays pretty much the same the entire movie??? Second, the village scene. In the original they're singing a happy song for fun, just for the song to cut when they find the village. We go from a bright cheery song, into a dark awful event. You see everyone taking it in, the destruction and loss of life. You feel the shock, the grief, you feel what the characters feel. And after this scene, they don't sing anymore. Things have changed and they need to take the war seriously. They found a girl worth fighting for when they were too late and found the lost doll of a girl who has lost her life. I'll be honest, I can't even remember the live action one beside from what was showm in the video. That's how lazy and boring it was. *How* do you go from a scene that sticks with you for years into a scene that is so worthless and not important you can't remember it at all? I hate this movie with a passion.
Have you watched the 2009's Mulan: Rise of a Warrior? Starring Vicky Zhao. Have fun with that one. It's closer to the poem than Disney's version though.
The thing that seemed to bother me most, interestingly, was the cinematic score. The score in the film was so boring and they just randomly throw in the melody from Reflection and it adds absolutely nothing. The score from the 1998 film was so amazing and iconic that you could close your eyes and listen and you can almost see everything that happened when that particular track was playing in the movie. I never truly appreciated the scoring until i watched the 1998 version right after the 2020 remake just to wash out the bad taste it left in my mouth, and God damn, the original cinematic score was beautiful. I would probably enjoy 2020's Mulan if I replaced all the scores with the original.
God I can’t STAND the score! It’s awful! It barely even sounds Chinese. For most of the film it sounds like a generic western princess Disney movie. Which is particularly disappointing since the guy the wrote it has worked closely with John Powell in the past who did the Kung Fu Panda score WHICH SLAPS.
Yeah the score was sad. To me the score in the animated film helped it come together with the beautiful feeling/character the animation brought to it. In the 2020 one idk they just threw music in there.
The composer for this movie was Harry Gregson-Williams and honestly, I have a feeling he was somehow fucked over by the rest of the production team for this movie because I can't really think of any other reason why this movie's score would suck so bad. Gregson-Williams has proven himself more than capable of writing brilliant scores. He's worked on The Martian, Shrek and Shrek 2, and the Chronicles of Narnia, all of which have pretty great music...
It also was filmed 2 miles away from one of many concentration camps, where they murder and torture prisoners that are there because they are from a certain ethnic group, and they thanked the people in charge of the province and the camp in the credits
Except for the fact that Mulan has the cheek to ask for an extra payment on top of a Disney Plus subscription to watch it. Even Artemis Fowl wasn't that greedy.
Disney are probably relieved they released this film on their own streaming service rather than in theatres. Not only does the service regulate the amount of people who watch and critique this movie due to the subscription, but also allowed then to charge extra just for the privilege of watching it. This is the equivalent of reserving a table at a 5 star restaurant, paying extra at the door and then all they serve is a measly ham sandwich.
they're gonna make it free to everyone in december im sorry but if they were gonna make it free anyways why the hell did they make premium access a thing?
I dunno, I've had some good ham sandwiches. Maybe if you went to a restaurant that was bringing back one of your favorite sandwiches they discontinued, only to find they'd taken out the meat and that the tomatoes in it were rotten.
"You know, Amy, anytime someone calls attention to the breaking of gender roles, it ultimately undermines the concept of gender equality by implying this is an exception and not the status quo."
Especially since one of the biggest messages in the original was that strict gender roles are damaging and that Mulan was just as capable as the men and that not giving her equal opportunities and respect just because she has bobs and vagene is stupid. But now it's like, "she literally needs superpowers to hold her own against an ordinary man" which is Yikes and Shitty.
Gwendolyn Stata we got to see her grow into a strong warrior, and now she doesn’t have to train because she has some powers? Sounds like bull, but alright.
As a Vietnamese, I would prefer they hadn't turned a great cartoon masterpiece like Mulan into an emulation of Chinese films like "Romance of the Three Kingdom". I feel surprisingly nostalgic of my childhood watching these films but without all the good elements that make these Chinese films better than the live-action.
Let's be real: We knew it was going to be bad. But we never knew it was going to be THAT BAD. (Edit: I just checked Rotten Tomatoes and its 75%. Audience 51%. Well played Disney. Well played. I still wanted it to be good though.)
I was thinking of a great way to argue with my mother about how bad it is before she watches it and now I have it: one of the main villains became a fucking bird
"Im Chinese myself and there are a million movies just like this Mulan in China. Theyre not necessary about Mulan but its exactly the same where its a mystical hero story and theres kung fu while praising Chinese pride with bad acting, weiting, and a spinning camera. " someone said this and it is so true
Even though i'm not chinese, I watch chinese dramas and movies once in a while and I can say that's true. There are many works that has this theme and the camera work, editing, acting, etc. is basically the same (not saying that all movies nor dramas are as bad as this movie, just saying that there's a lot of it).

The funniest part out of all of this: The whole point of the changes, was because they wanted the movie to do really well in China, and they felt that they should make the movie more loyal to the original legend Mulan was based of. Not only apparently it's not more loyal to the source, but seemingly Disney didn't think of including any Chinese person on the creative team of the movie they made to appeal to the Chinese market. And the movie is bombing and getting panned in China. Edit: To be entirely fair, I don't think my dumb ass can make that much fun of Disney executives for bad decisions when, just one day after watching videos tell me how useful it can be to leave comments that get lots of likes in the videos of bigger creators, I post a comment like this using my personal-use channel instead of the one I want to become a youtuber with.
This movie was not good. To make the witch a better villain, I would let it be that the witch is Mulan’s sister. The live-action remake replaced the grandmother with her sister. The reason why her sister, aka the witch would attack Mulan is that she felt rejected by her own family. Because of Mulan’s chi powers, her family gave all of the love and attention to Mulan instead of her. The family would look down to the sister because they believed that she wasn’t and never will be as good as Mulan. This would at the VERY LEAST make the villain a little bit better.
A chinese woman made a twitter thread about how inaccurate the movie was culture wise so the argument that they cut out a bunch of stuff for culture just hurts much worse.

@@sunshineholtzlander5593 Nah, dude made pretty racist characters in his old movies.
("I should have prayed to the ancestors for luck."
"How much luck can they be? They're dead.")
It is true that she crossed the road, but that could have happened without the cricket.
That’s actually a really intriguing analysis.
it could be argued that cricket ruining the meeting with the matchmaker *was* good luck as it set in motion the series of events that led to Mulan saving China, though I am quite a fan of your take on things too

Ironic, isn't it?
They became that what they strived to destroy.
Ugh honestly
Mulan not having any need for a training scene is by far the most insulting part of the movie. What makes the original Mulan so good, is that she trains her ass off to be as good as her peers until she eventually starts getting even better than them. Love action basically says; “training scenes? Who needs that shit? OBVIOUSLY magic is why she’s so good. Fuck current Disney

"No matter how the wind howls, the mountain cannot bow to it."
That line is from the original Mulan movie, from the Emperor, an important but fairly minor character. And that alone is more memorable than this whole "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" wannabe.
And that is the mark of good character - every character is treated like a protagonist, that has personality, fears, and hopes. It's why I love books by Brandon Sanderson.
A single grain of rice can tip the scale! one man can be the difference between victory and defeat!
@@thelonewolf9866 what is that from? It sounds so familiar.

That analogy works well to Disney. They are the mountain. Critics are the wind. As long as mountain grows bigger with money. More and more inferior remakes emerge.
what i believe made the original mulan so special was mulan herself. she didn’t get free passes, she trained with all the other men and still was able to prove herself a strong team mate. team mate, not person. she fought within a team, where she relied on her partners and they relied on her. she didn’t become ‘better’ than everyone because of some magical chi, she worked hard and it payed off. this remake just makes a mockery out of it.
zuko is a simp Disney be like: *we now copy overpowered anime protagonists*
@@ee-td3ex except op anime protagonists usually have psychoemotional growth arcs to make up for it.

When you remove a character's struggle for improvement, it makes them less relatable, less human.

Why are you even surprised it’s Disney We are all taking about. They suck about making real live action movie like for real.
And multiple times @ that Reflection playing in the background!!!
It’s like the Star Wars sequels slapping the force theme every ten seconds

They still have Little Mermaid. I am scared to think how they are going to ruin one of my favourite cartoons ever.
Please, stop challenging them! HAVE MERCY!!!

"Im Chinese myself and there are a million movies just like this Mulan in China. Theyre not necessary about Mulan but its exactly the same where its a mystical hero story and theres kung fu while praising Chinese pride with bad acting, weiting, and a spinning camera. " someone said this and it is so true
Ah, maybe that's what Disney thought of by representing their 'culture'
Yeah i said as the original posterthis I mean its one of the top comments you even copied my typo :/
@@sev1011 No, the reason for shitty films in China is that the companies make more money making shitty films, and it is great for money laundering
Even though i'm not chinese, I watch chinese dramas and movies once in a while and I can say that's true. There are many works that has this theme and the camera work, editing, acting, etc. is basically the same (not saying that all movies nor dramas are as bad as this movie, just saying that there's a lot of it).
@@sharkb8754 and also from what I've heard they can't show shows from other places like pokemon so they have to make copies of them but different in ways just to have things similar to them
Having a women character just be special without having to start of weaker and show growth is the definition of insulting writing.

Well, congrats, Disney. You officially broke Schaff, the funniest/best RUclips reviewer who can usually say at least ONE positive thing about anything. I hope you're happy.

Could you give some examples of well executed characters with the traits of ‘strong independent woman’ type?

The funniest part out of all of this:
The whole point of the changes, was because they wanted the movie to do really well in China, and they felt that they should make the movie more loyal to the original legend Mulan was based of.
Wh--so their solution to making it more based on the original legend was to be even more inaccurate about Chinese culture?
"they wanted the movie to do really well in China" lol well disney is heavily funded by chinese...
