@@colfol231 Mulan 2020 is as feminist as the new Charlie's Angels... Little Women, Booksmart or Lady Bird are actual movies with good messages for girls.
@@colfol231 none of this happened because of "modern feminism". I haven't seen a single feminist or so called sjw express support for this awful film. This happened because Disney is so disconnected from their audiences and the source material. This is just greed. None of the main creators of this would probably ever label themselves a "feminist"
That's alot of old movies. Sunday bloody sunday boys in the band are an actual cultural touchstone that still exist in the eyes of their community regardless of criticism while to quote NC "pandering bullshit like (whatever new fauxgressive crap the big studios come up with now) fades away, also for good reason"
My favorite part of the original Mulan was when she was sent home because she couldn’t keep up with the rest of the men. Instead of leaving she used the weights to climb the pole no one else could and get the arrow no one else could. THAT is an empowered woman and for me as a six year old girl, that was what made me feel like I could do anything through perseverance and determination. The new version tells girls they can accomplish anything if they have magic bullshit powers.
Exactly. Another youtuber talked about this scene and said how Mulan went to the war to take her father's place but when she was given a way out, she chose to stay to prove herself. If that's not women empowerment, I don't know what the fuck is.
The ironic thing is, her dropping her armor shows disrespect towards her father, the person she cares enough about to go to war for. That armor was her fathers, yet she just leaves it in the mud like it means nothing to her. Just another way the modern one somehow manages to screw up everything, even the virtues they supposedly show in the movie (loyalty, etc.)
Damn I was just focused on the stupidity of the fact that she was running into battle with NO armor on... I completely forgot it was her dad’s lmao that makes it 11x worse
1998 film: "You don't need to be like a man to do what they can do and be great at doing it." 2020 Remake: "You'll never be as good as men unless if you have magical powers and supernatural combat skills."
@@dcscruz2970 What's interesting is that it's 20 years later and many chinese people have embraced western culture more. If they had done a remake more true to the original, it would have been accepted better than before.
@@remindyouofwho7201 Honestly, I think most chinese people like the animated version. It would have prob been much better if this version was really close to the animated one or really close to the original, but it's not and it's a monstrous blend with chinese elements and hollywood story telling???with like a shit ton of inaccuracies that would have been better left out. Especially random inaccurate details. Just don't do it. It just doesn't work. At all.
Also basically said that you have to be a 'chosen one' or have 'special powers' just to be good at something, while the original said that anybody can be anything if they are determined. Honestly, Disney doesn't even care about their own work now.
Mulan (1998) also has one of the most unforgiving and sudden mood shifts of any movie i’ve ever seen. In the scene where the army is singing and having a good time as they march to meet up with the rest of their forces we an abrupt stop, and are shown a village that was burned down. We go from joyful and happy soldiers singing to just the complete opposite as they walk through the ruins of the village. The score goes from upbeat to depressing in a matter of seconds. They completely massacred this scene in the remake.
That scene is one of the most powerful scenes in the whole movie, in my opinion. Especially since they’re singing the goofy song, then it immediately gets cut off as they find the little girl’s burned up doll. It did such a good job showing the horrors of war just by showing that one doll.
And that mood whiplash allows them to drive home the horror of war without being too explicit for a children's movie, while for older audiences the inferred horror becomes even more terrible. It's an amazing scene in a great movie.
@@mayvalley Worst thing is we the audience already saw that doll before! I forgot his name, but the main antagonist of the original Mulan got that doll after his pet bird brought it to him. After his men inspected that doll he told them "The little girl misses his doll. We should return it to her.". I saw both scenes on RUclips a few weeks ago in the right order and my expression went from ._. to 0-0 back to ._. after my brain told me 'Just act natural' because I got called down for something
In order to run up a wall, you’ll need an impossible amount of momentum. But even then, that wouldn’t work because of the 90° angle. They were running as if the wall had gravity on its own.
@@neoniguana655 I think that it could work for a very short distance, like you sometimes see people who do parkour do it. But obviously how it's in the movie it's extremely unrealistic.
not only is this movie the worst thing Disney has made since god knows what, they think that women are so bad they have to have super powers to be equal to men
Your more correct than giving a dog a small pat on the head instead of hugging, or doing some crazy thing to the dog. Your just as correct as a good hardy woofer pat.
that thing among many others made me so pissed at Mulan remake - in the animated version she sucked at the begining, but she was witty and she worked hard, she didn't had to went on the shortcut by having superpowers (like, seriously, are men SO amazing and strong that she needs a fucking super powers to be able to keep up with them??)
The point of Mulan is that she ISN’T naturally strong. She ISN’T naturally gifted in martial arts and fighting. She ISN’T special. But, she’s incredibly smart, incredibly brave, she worked hard to become a skilled warrior, and she does what’s right, even when she’s scared or thinks she’s not able to do it. I dunno how they managed to fuck that up.
Vegetarian Soylent Green right! She wasn’t born special, what made her special were the decisions she made and the actions she took. The point is, ANY woman could be Mulan if they have the courage in their hearts. You don’t have to be “special”. In the 2020 movie, Mulan is an exception. She’s NOT just like any other woman. So basically, the movie says that a woman has to be born with special powers in order to be on par with her male counterparts, which is bullshit and goes against the original message!
Reasons why this movie is worse than the cartoon: 1. They took out “make a man out of you” 2. It’s made by modern Disney 3. They took out “make a man out of you”
Kung Fu Panda did a better job at portraying chi powers and the overall “chosen one” storyline. Po was ordinary like Mulan and wanted to prove himself as a kung Fu master. He was determined to put in the work even though there were others and things that would make him feel like he couldn’t do it. Even after the first movie, we still get to see Po evolve as a kung Fu master and learn about things like inner peace and how to use chi to help others. The fact that a movie about a cartoon panda fighting did a better job than mulan 2020 is hilarious.
Exactly. Plus, Po always had flaws, he was never a “Gary Stu.” Sure he did beat Tai Lung when they met(which sometimes feels a bit off considering the latter trained his whole damn life) but he has flaws like being an idiot in the 1st movie(for the majority that is). SPEAKING of Kung Fu Panda… You know how Mulan 2020- sorry, MARYSULAN is a Mary Sue who wins because of “cHi pOwEr”? Well there’s a Kung Fu Panda character that is veeerry interested in chi. I say we bring him to Marysulan’s area(you all know what he gonna do next) WHO’S WITH ME?
The 200 million dollars was just the production cost, it doesn't even cover the advertising costs. This means that Disney lost even more money than one might expect... And this does put a smile on my face.
Usually, to get a good result for a movie's box office, the earnings should be at least 3 times the declared production cost. Usually, you should double the declared production cost to come close to the real movie's cost due to publicity etc... If there are rumored re-shoots or other production problems, the cost rises even more. This means that this move's box office was an absolute shitshow for Disney, after the Mega shitshow that was Star Wars: TROS, and it's their third movie that has not performed well on 3 releases in the last 10 months. It's also their second remake that flops hard. I am VERY pleased with this, I hope they got the message 😙
Why do they continue with their remakes they are just making it worst I remember when Disney was considered magical now it’s nothing, I wish they would learn from their mistakes but after so many remakes I don’t think they will
LadyKraken I would like to hope for that as well, but my bets are on them doubling down and fucking up another beloved film instead. “Have I told you the definition of insanity?”

The original movie: women are just as strong as men and there's strength in both masculinity and femininity. This trainwreck: women can maybe catch up with men if they have superpowers, otherwise stay on your lane and give me sons
in the original movie the message was that she wasn't stronger, but better because she was smart, this was a powerful message from Disney to keep conflict with gender 'war' to be peaceful not continuous. meaning as if she was smarter than the other men she could potentially be better. in the remake, they made her some powerful overtaking woman who could defeat men because of her chi; this escalates feminists to resume their conflict of being "more powerful than men." therefore creating a conflict of men hating women for their 'feminism' more and continuously. In conclusion people hate this movie because ITS FULL OF SHIT THAT NO ONE CARES, NOT EVEN WOMEN
@@comedicpsychnerd no, they're saying that now you can't just give a message metaphorically, you just have to present the message as it is, so that people don't get angry for misinterpreting it.

I don’t think turning Mulan into a Wuxia story is inherently a bad idea, in fact it sorta works, but the people who wrote this movie fundamentally don’t understand Wuxia as a genre. One of the core principles of the Wuxia Genre is that birth and natural talent is secondary to hard work and training, it doesn’t matter if you’re a man or woman, the Emperor or a peasant, if you put in the effort you can achieve great things, Mulan 2020 is the antithesis of the Genre it’s trying to emulate.
I was gonna come here to comment pretty much this and you took the words right out of my mouth! Yeah, a Mulan movie with Wuxia elements could be fun and awesome, but sadly these people didn't understand the genre...
It's such a simple fix, too. Just make it so every character has chi powers, and most of the army and antagonists are stronger than Mulan. If you want it to not be about gender, make it so many members of the army are female but have extremely strong qi, and Mulan simply doesn't. (If you wanted to maintain the whole Mulan crossdress plot just make the women their own division that Mulan can't join because they're ridiculously powerful, which is why they were allowed in the army despite being women) Then all you have to do is revolve the plot around Mulan using wit and hard work to outdo/keep up with those around her and boom. She's back to being similar to the better Mulan without losing the wuxia elements.
Disney seems like they haven’t realized that we don’t actually want “strong female characters.” We want strong characters that just happen to be female. “Strong female characters” aren’t compelling because that’s literally their entire character. Strong characters that just happen to be female have to have other things going for them to be interesting, relatable, or admirable.
Spoods Noodle Doodles I actually kind of liked Rey in Force Awakens and Last Jedi, not gonna lie. Captain Marvel though. Yeah. She’s overall just a big “meh” for me.
@@melfree2545 Rey was fine until TROS imo, she had struggles, pains and a somewhat aggressive personality that was coming through especially in TLJ, she was not perfect in everything she did but still managed to make it work, and had a "pRoBlEmAtIc" potential love interest, which I liked. Then they made her Super Saiyan One Punch Ninja Womyn Who Don't Need No Man with glorious bloodline in some failed attempt to cater to Reddit's hurt feefees in the last movie, only reinforcing the Mary Sue argument idiots were already ranting about and they lost me there. There was literally no character exploration in that movie. Cap Marvel is uh.......flat....in all senses of the word lol
LadyKraken I agree. I know this is kinda controversial but I really, really liked TLJ. Rey was a big part of why. I hated TROS so much I mostly pretend it doesn’t exist.

Except Uighur wasn’t anywhere near the Milan saga in history. At the time of Mulan the Uyghur didn’t even come onto historical scene yet. Also exactly why does everyone treat Uyghurs being entitled to xinjiang when it is a multiethnic region and Han was there literally thousand year before Uyghur? Also the whole oppression thing, the delegation from UN found no wrong doing in their investigation in the region. So show some proof like Guantanamo before starting the accusation. The thing that I loved so much in the 1998 movie was how it showed that what made Mulan so special was her ability to think creatively and critically in certain situations, like how she used the weights to climb up the log, fired a cannon into the mountain to cause an avalanche, and especially that whole ending scene where she devised a plan to save the emperor. It made her feel like an actual character with real strengths and weaknesses rather than just a generic strong female character. For this, she was always my favourite Disney princess character growing up because she taught me the value of hard work and dedication and fighting for what you love and that no matter what weighs you down, you can always get up and even use the things weighing you down to actually help you. The fact that this character that was meant to be an inspiration to young girls continues to inspire me, an adult male, just shows how well written she is. That's why the 2020 adaptation disappointed me so much. They took a character that I admired and looked up to since childhood and made her into a boring, overpowered protagonist with no unique traits other than that she has super magic kung fu powers or whatever. Even my little sister found the movie boring, and she's a huge fan of Mulan. I really don't have much more to say about the live action one because it was just so uninteresting, especially compared to the 1998 animated film which I can talk about for hours.
I definitely agree that her ingenuity in the first movie was undervalued, but hard work? Women work hard every day and it’s utterly taken for granted. Male protagonists get to be Gary Stu wish fulfilment characters all the damn time and no one bats an eyelid, but when a female protagonist is like that, the world gets angry. I’m sorry that I was ever rude about teenage girls in the 2000s who wrote Mary Sue fanfic; I want them to produce all the movies until we have as many Mary Sues on the big screen as Gary Stus.

Disney: we don’t want to appeal to our OG Mulan audience, let’s try to appeal to Chinese audience with bare bones cultural research and zero effort. Oh no neither groups likes the movie????
nah you had your moment. This isn't the 90s anymore. Unlike most people who are mad that the movie is not identical to the original movie, in my opinion it's a great movie and I highly recommend you all to watch it. It's $40, and that's much cheaper for 4 people going to see it at cinemas. Just please, set your criticism aside and enjoy it.
FallenAngel We’re not mad that it isn’t identical to the original cartoon version. We’re just saying it’s a disgrace to the message it was supposed to send. Now little girls in this generation are possibly gonna watch this 2020 Mulan film as the original Mulan film and it’s gonna tell them that they’ll always be one step behind men unless they have a naturally born superpower/gift. Mulan is literally about portraying women empowerment. If you don’t care about that and just care about the making of the film in itself, then ur missing the whole point of the film. If this 2020 Mulan film WASN’T identical to the original but still managed to send a message about women empowerment, we, the audience, wouldn’t be complaining. But it didn’t, so it’s why we’re criticizing. I mean, I guess it’s a good film if you only wanna see action and fighting.
As a martial artist with long hair, I can confirm: letting your hair down in the middle of a fight sucks, not just because it gets everywhere, but if you turn fast enough, that shit be slapping you in the eyes.

You know, it's hard for me: Normally, i would seperate the actual Movie 'Mulan' from the Real Life. Look at them seperately. But this... THIS is just an extreme case and i dont know how to do it here. All this is so insane. The Movie is full of Cringe, Fake-Feminism and Plot Holes - yet, the Real Life has way crazier problems and I'm starting to think China is so off-track from the rest of humanity that some Nation should - no kidding - invade China and take over, so the Supression ends... Or something like this! I know this normally isnt right, but... i believe there is a 'Point' where such a thing is justified. Of course this point is by no means easy to reach, but... it's possible to reach, you know? Oh, i don't know.
Disney: gets rid of Mushu to make the movie more "realistic" Also Disney: puts in a bunch of bs superpowers and thanks the ccp for using an internment camp. Wow... Edit: Watching this again, while I can see why they would remove the comedy relief characters for a more serious tone and to respect the culture, what about the pheonix? I thought that was part of Greek mythology. Am I missing something?
Thank you for speaking up about Xinjiang. I am Chinese, and I firmly believe the CCP is the worst thing happening to my country. By the way, the lead actress in the earlier Mulan movie that you mentioned, Zhaowei, has been "disappeared" for more than a year.
It's also sad how the current Mulan actress went out of her way to say she stands with the Hong Kong Police because theirs nothing more empowering to women or anyone else than supporting a Communist state in the midst of repressing it's people. The Same Communist Government that during it's One China Policy forced tens of thousands of women to have abortions and the vast majority of aborted or post live birth murders were girls who could have grown up to be remarkable women but were instead snuffed out in favor of sons because the Communist State demanded it.
Sometimes to me it's not clear if Chinese actors "support" the government because they really like it or because they don't want to, you know, disappear or whatever else China does to people who oppose them (and being a public figure makes it even harder to go against it because if they survey regular folk, they definitely keep all the tabs on their celebs and what they are saying). Not defending the main actress, because hey what she said was shifty, but sometimes I wonder how much of those words are genuine and how much is just being afraid of something happening to you or your family.
Well the movie is about a woman supporting an Empire that oppresed people in the great wall. Now is a movie about a woman supporting the Empire oppres the xiognu . Played by an actress that supports an Empire oppresing minorities. So I Say is pretty much spot on
When Disney said they were gonna make a realistic Mulan I thought they were gonna make it more mature. Like have war scenes and show us how hard Mulan struggled to become a warrior. But no she instead “beats all the boys” because magic :/
I really hate that disney's response to people wanting strong female characters is literally make all their female characters physically stronger. We want compelling female characters who feel like their own person and whose character arc does not revolve around the men in her life, not a human nuke who can melt space ships and oh yeah also happens to be a woman.
I mean do we? There is already enough representation in media now. I'm not saying that representation is bad, nay, I encourage it, but is there not enough empowerment? And also BTW a woman character's personality shouldn't just be woman, it should be a well written character with personality who happens to be a woman. Representation doesn't mean you can't show their flaws and stuff.
I think that it needs to be a mix of both. Female characters shouldn’t have to be made more stereotypically masculine to be strong characters, but women can also be physically strong. But when it comes to these strong women in movies they always seem to choose one or the other. How about a head strong, with a more petite woman or a compassionate but more physically built woman?
Max speed. May deal negative damage but hey she quicc even though she didint use that to her advantage for some reason (probably too much work for disney)

In the 1998 mulan, shan yu was awesome. His character was freaking cool looking, he was a menace and a huge threat, his voice worked great with the character. Just the "boo" when he's hanging from the roof, just a great villan. The live action butchered it because he doesn't even feel like a threat, it feels like he isn't even dangeous without the witch. In the live action he's seemingly useless on hiss own, considered he was beaten by mulan instantly.

camaro rider My opinion of Disney has gone downhill since they worked on the new Star Wars trilogy. These new “live action” movies were just icing on the cake. Not to mention their corporate bs.
Disney: "We want to make it more accurate to the original story and more closely represent chinese history." Also Disney: *Skidaddle Skidaddic, everybody's magic*
You can’t show that both the bad guy and Mulan are able to dodge arrows and then act like she is in any threat from an arrow, needing the sacrifice of the witch.
This movie is so empowering to women that it doesn’t even need any of the original motifs that display woman empowerment that the original animated version had, it doesn’t even need to have any. You just need to take their word, it’s empowering to women, trust them.
Polverine74 that’s exactly how it was haha how dare you hate it CLEARLY it’s about empowering women even if she is not empowers on her own without some preexisting magic
What I loved about cartoon Mulan was that she was flawed, but willing to learn from her mistakes and she had a good heart. The result was a character that may not have been physically strong, but was crafty and hard working. Where others only thought with brute strength, she used her head and came up with unique solutions. The pole climbing scene exemplified this perfectly. It was a problem that everyone tried to solve with pure strength, but Mulan solved it with intelligence. She excelled because she made her attributes work for her and she used her head. In the movie she excels because....... chi. That's it. It takes away so much of her agency and achievement! She's just some shell for the chi that does all the work! I find that in a lot of "girl power" movies they do this. They try to either force the character to be strong like a man, or they give her some outside mechanical force that makes her... strong like a man. In a story where women did not traditionally fight in the army for cultural reasons it just looks silly to strong arm a female character into a role without making her earn it through her skills and hard work. It makes "girl power" hollow if you're just using the story to force a woman into a traditional male role. She needs to EARN IT. That's the only way anyone is going to believe a woman overcomes the cultural expectations of her country that have existed for thousands of years. Making a character who only fits in with men because of some magical force only makes it more obvious why women can't achieve anything on their own merits.
Couldn't agree more, but I will add one thing. Be careful not to complete flip the other way. Just because someone in film is female, doesn't mean they can't be strong. I'll give you my favourite example, Vasquez from Aliens. Major supporting actor, skill set of brute strength warrior. This is in the same movie with a major female lead. Who also fought, but who's character was a scientist The writing of the script was done so well both characters really contributed to the movie, because they were nuanced.
@@fredsmith-kingofthelunatic7810 Oh absolutely. I find it's more of a problem in historical movies where the time period and culture made it unrealistic for a woman to be strong in the modern sense of the word. In more modern and sci fi settings it can be a bit easier to incorporate it naturally. It's one of the the things I enjoy about futuristic stories, where women and men are equally skilled and gender doesn't really play a role in what they can and cannot do. The Expanse, for example. Avasarala is a bad ass who isn't afraid to tell off anyone and she does it in a killer oitfit... and I love her to pieces. Or Draper, a fearless space warrior. Drummer, all authority and calculation. Great characters, men and women alike. They all have their srengths and weaknesses and feel so natural because they are all just people trying to make it throughlife the best they can. We're all just people. ❤
Women have earned every damn inch we’ve gained toward equality. Women fought and died so that I could vote, women have worked twice as hard for half as much as men so that I could get hired outside a few select jobs that men don’t want to do. And throughout history women have worked their damn asses off in the roles they were assigned by patriarchy. I won’t watch this movie out of solidarity for the Uyghurs but holy shit am I tired of the way male protagonists get to be wish fulfilment Gary Stus but women have to prove that they work hard, as if the whole of history isn’t proof of that. I deserve some Mary Sues as treat.
FINALLY someone said it. The CGI/Editing is soooo bad. Like when Mulan is on the horse, It's almost like that meme of Mary Jane holding onto a fake spiderman.
They didn't have any songs because "people don't walk into war singing" (or something like that) but people have always sung when going to war, battle chants and ballads, modern soldiers singing pop songs together. Singing is a part of going to battle, it gives a sense of togetherness and a rhythm
The hair cutting scene in the animated movie represents her embracing change, representing a new beginning, a new her. She embraced her new self she was going to have to be to join the army, before she had to, knowing she would have to develop as a person and face challenges she hadn't had before, that's why she cut her hair. Not because it would help disguise her/make her more masculine, because, like Elvis Alien said, men had long hair in early China, so she could've kept her hair, but didn't, to embrace change and her new future self, and let go of who she was before.

I feel this is a syndrome of all the Disney live-action remakes: They're just vapid and devoid of any soul. They're not trying to make movies, just nostalgia pandering cashgrabs (cough cough Star Wars sequal trilogy). What I find most annoying is that they try to "fix problems" with the remakes, but it just ends up completely missing the mark and making Disney look pretend woke
So true. If Disney cared about making good remakes, they should first ask themselves what made the original great, what the themes and messages were, and how they could translate that from cartoon to live-action (or they should just start making cartoons again, I know there would be a market for it)
Disney: New? Oh you poor children, you think make all of our from those films to make something new? No, no, we know exactly what we were this entire time. The POWERFUL feeling in all of human history, NOSTALGIA...
So they took out Mushu because they wanted a more grounded, less supernatural movie. Buttttt they have a witch and and Mulan has chi powers...right.... Disney logic
Actually I heard they took out Mushu because a few Chinese people found Mushu to be somewhat insulting in a way. Which is ironic because Disney ended up being more insulting to China.
@@linkingglagoon8254 I have this idea where Mushu is a dragon reluctantly bound to a human form and forced to oversee Mulan's safety by order of the heavenly court.
I think Disney and other big corporations like RUclips are just completely ignorant to what people want and in the pursuit of making things "advertiser friendly" end up making everything hundred times worse
“4 oz, can move 1000 lbs” just sounds awkward, even if it was a movie in America with our weight system. That just does not sound good or inspiring, “a grain of rice can move a boulder” sounds so much better
It sounds very nice in chinese, since its an old saying they used to use another measurement. 四两拨千斤。 so as a chinese person that was one thing that didnt bother me. Edit i take that back, this saying is for taichi and that was not invented until thousands of years later.
Leia Jiang it doesn’t matter what the Chinese say. It’s the fact that when translated into English, they use current metric which seems out of place and not archaic
I've noticed a really disappointing theme with movies who center around strong female leads. in a lot of them, in order to make her strong, they will resort to giving her super powers. that *undermines the whole point of empowerment.* like... we aren't supernatural in real life. but we can be strong for who we are, though none of these movies that claim to represent that seem to believe that
I consider it an allegory for natural talent, which I have in some areas. The truth of the matter is, I 100% didn’t work harder than my classmates in the classes where I got top marks. They studied hard to pass, just like I did in my weaker subjects. So I don’t consider it offensive to see a female character being better than men at something without breaking a sweat when I did that at a number of academic competitions in my city. Besides, male protagonists get to be supernaturally good at things all the time; I deserve to think of myself that way too.
Sad thing is in the old movie's end, she was given a position as a royal council which meant she was gratitued for her INTELLIGENCE, but in the new one she was granted a position in the royal army as in for war which meant she was seen for her FIGHTING SKILL so they not only completely changed the moral but they f ing changed the whole purpose of the movie which was trying to say that it's not only about your ability to fight as in strength, durability etc which in the old one, Mulan doesn't have, those people can beat others if they are intelligent and hard working..
The end of “Make a man out of you” where Mulan is climbing the post to reach the arrow as the sun rises is one of the most powerful scenes in Disney history and it gives me chills every time AND THEY CUT IT FROM THE MOVIE!? That was the moment i lost all hope entirely for this dumpster fire of a movie

@@step2fr i mean theyre kinda right. disney is a megacorp, they're not the good guys. I don't think theyre unoriginal, but none of their ideas have been theirs, which isn't bad because they always put a unique spin on it so it's kinda their thing. I think disney wouldve died out if they didn't buy pixar--pixar is peak originality and interesting ideas coupled with great animation.
I think the ultimate problem with Disney is they lack a strong artistic core. They’re making these movies by committee. Disney and Pixar were their best when they had a creative director who understood what makes stories good. These movies have gotten so big and expensive that they have too many hands on them, they won’t trust their creatives.
Wanna know even more irony? "Witch" isn't even character in Chinese myth. No, seriously. Usually they have bad spirits for bad magical character ( Like Empress Daji Myth). Basically they insert European character for Chinese setting movie.
Birb Witch: can summon a swarm of birds for scouting and harassment Birb Witch: doesn't do that when taking the arrow for Mulan, thus saving herself and Mulan
My favorite thing about this video is that when he starts talking about the animated Mulan there's nice ancient Chinese music playing. And when he starts talking about the remake some goofy royalty free music plays
You know another thing I can't understand from this whole thing? Why did Disney producers decide to specifically state "having a commander that is also a sexual love interest was very uncomfortable"? Why did they need to specify "sexual"? Wasn't "love interest" enough of a description? It's not like as soon as Lee saw she was a girl he immediately thought "well, I'm gonna smack that booty, I want her I'm my bed right now!" Like, is this how they see romantic relationships nowadays? Just a sexual thing? Also, he didn't even try to pursue her while she was a soldier. Not even after she was found out to be a girl. She was a civilian after he came to her. At no point he showed romantic interest while she was one of his soldiers. This makes even less sense.
Well, I mean, it strikes me that these producers aren't very smart to begin with, judging on the decisions they made about this movie. And by not smart, I mean shallow. So... I wouldn't be surprised if they thought love interest = sexual attraction.
He didnt even see her as a woman, but respected her as a fellow soldier. Now, even if he was bi and interested in her, I dont think he'd do anything to tarnish his fathers name, so.. Im just glad his character wasnt ruined in this (by not appearing at all)
“Desert Goths” is actually perfectly accurate for the people’s being portrayed. There are distinct parallels between the Goths that fought the Romans and these “Desert Goths” fighting the Empire.
later the emperor gave her a new sword with a new 4th virtue and it's "Devotion to family". Kinda sounds like he's telling her to stay the fuck home, get married and have kids lol (I get it that they mean differently, probably? But it's a lame thing to put on the sword of a warrior lol)
@@vanessapham6914 it was just a bad job done on disney's part.. its supposed to mean fidial peity i think. in chinese culture its essentially showing respect and honor to our family. there isnt really an english translation that can capture what it really means.

It seems more like she just want to fight. She didn't show much struggles during training either and seems very at home with the military, so... there wasn't anything she had to overcome for family honor. It's just... not clear what family devotion she showed that deserved to be added to the sword

Most of those fans are straight girls who fetishize gay men, it's disgusting. and the 2009 one further emphasizes that Mulan can be portrayed as super talented and badass from the beginning too if it is well executed with emotional struggle and development of the main character.
14:43 If that throwing star thingy was thrown with enough force to send Mulan flying backwards it should’ve penetrated her body and exited out her back akin to a very powerful bullet (or cannon ball since even bullets realistically don’t send you flying). Neither armour nor tiddy-binder would’ve saved her.
To make it worse, the movie is filled with orientalism. The whole "chi" thing is incredibly misrepresented and they could have fixed it just by calling it "cultivation" instead. There are no witches in Chinese mythology, but spirits that can transform from birds to humans and shape-shift are a thing and considered evil. The clothing the characters are wearing are strange, low quality mutations of Chinese clothes, visualising this movies orientalism right in front of our eyes. It's so painfully obvious they didn't have anyone that knew anything about anything Chinese to help them make this movie, yet they expected the Chinese audiences to like it?
Kung Fu Panda was more respectful to Chinese culture than this film. Disney has all this fucking money. It is 2020, HOW are we still doing the whole “didn’t bother to ask, just made it up from memory” method of depicting foreign cultures? Seriously!!

That is a heartwarming story right there, thanks for sharing your experience with the movie Zur! ^_^
Exactly. Another youtuber talked about this scene and said how Mulan went to the war to take her father's place but when she was given a way out, she chose to stay to prove herself. If that's not women empowerment, I don't know what the fuck is.
As a dude, Mulan was so cool in the original movie and after watching the live action, they completely disrespected her character.
New Mulan, master of bullshitsu.
I guess she loses everything her father had, huh? She tosses the armor away on the battlefield AND she drops the sword into a vat of molten metal.
The Emperor most certainly doesn't approve

@Reido Dorito You could perhaps do it with the help of a rope (like rappelling, but backwards), but yeah, running unaided up a wall is just absurd.
In order to run up a wall, you’ll need an impossible amount of momentum. But even then, that wouldn’t work because of the 90° angle. They were running as if the wall had gravity on its own.

that thing among many others made me so pissed at Mulan remake - in the animated version she sucked at the begining, but she was witty and she worked hard, she didn't had to went on the shortcut by having superpowers (like, seriously, are men SO amazing and strong that she needs a fucking super powers to be able to keep up with them??)
The fact that she's moving in 'slow motion' but the hair on her face is flowing in a normal breeze kills me every time. 😂
This!
Exactly, she persevered when all of the odds were against her, she's inspiring for that reason, persistence, she doesn't give up.
Historically, Mulan had some fighting knowledge which I think could’ve easily been displayed without some stupid chi BS.
That message dosn't fit their narrative
Disney has a very good habit of fixing things that aren’t broken
"fixing"
Or at most failing to

Reasons why this movie is worse than the cartoon:

2. It’s made by modern Disney
3. They took out “make a man out of you”

4: they took out Mushu
5. They added a magical witch

Kung Fu Panda is just beautiful and really one of the best Animation trilogies

WHO’S WITH ME?

(If you wanted to maintain the whole Mulan crossdress plot just make the women their own division that Mulan can't join because they're ridiculously powerful, which is why they were allowed in the army despite being women)
Then all you have to do is revolve the plot around Mulan using wit and hard work to outdo/keep up with those around her and boom.
For Disney, they are just marking a check-box that some PR people gave them.

She proves her creativity early when she has "Little Brother" help her feed the chickens.
@@kiwimusume yes, the world can suspend its disbelief when it comes to anything else in stories apart from women.
I remember people were furious that Brienne was victorious against the Hound in GoT because a "woman could never"... While that world has dragons, giants and countless other impossible things that could "never" exist; but suddenly people only care about realism when it comes to a female character.
The double standards this world has for women is exhausting. There are countless other things to criticize about Mulan 2020 than "a wahman could Neva!!!11!1!1"
Dreamworks made a better Chinese movie about Jack Black being a panda doing kung-fu than Disney supposedly making a realistic Chinese film.

It's $40, and that's much cheaper for 4 people going to see it at cinemas. Just please, set your criticism aside and enjoy it.
FallenAngel
We’re not mad that it isn’t identical to the original cartoon version.

Thank you for speaking up about Xinjiang. I am Chinese, and I firmly believe the CCP is the worst thing happening to my country. By the way, the lead actress in the earlier Mulan movie that you mentioned, Zhaowei, has been "disappeared" for more than a year.
That sounds ominous.

I really hate that disney's response to people wanting strong female characters is literally make all their female characters physically stronger.

Aka a handicap
This movie is so empowering to women that it doesn’t even need any of the original motifs that display woman empowerment that the original animated version had, it doesn’t even need to have any. You just need to take their word, it’s empowering to women, trust them.
Polverine74 that’s exactly how it was haha how dare you hate it CLEARLY it’s about empowering women even if she is not empowers on her own without some preexisting magic
Sandra Hernandez if it was about female empowerment they wouldn’t have written her like a Mary Sue and not use “Chi” as a excuse for lazy writing
Polverine74 agreed. i don’t know how disney didn’t see how chi would undermine the original they took all the heart away from it
What I loved about cartoon Mulan was that she was flawed, but willing to learn from her mistakes and she had a good heart.
Who also fought, but who's character was a scientist
The writing of the script was done so well both characters really contributed to the movie, because they were nuanced.
Yo theres a scene during the invasion of the capital where you can see an outline around one of the Roran soldiers while he's running on a wall
Schaffrillas also pointed that out too
I dont think cgi/design is the main criticism here. Cgi & design < Storytelling & Plot
They didn't have any songs because "people don't walk into war singing" (or something like that) but people have always sung when going to war, battle chants and ballads, modern soldiers singing pop songs together. Singing is a part of going to battle, it gives a sense of togetherness and a rhythm
Right?
With the horrors of war, people need something to look forward to.
Woulda been cool if they changed up "make a man out of you" to be really rhythmic and sung with little to no instrumental other than drums.

Not just that, but in the animated version, she 100% refuses. In this new one, it's heavily implied she ultimately agrees.
I’m so happy that Mushu, the cricket, Shang, and the grandma weren’t in this movie. I’m sure that their characters would’ve been butchered as well.
True, Eddie Murphy would've killed himself.

The cartoon avalanche scene alone was more badass than the entire live action film.
It involved less real world genocide, too.

Disney sucks now, man, they're far past their prime.
man, a lot of notable animation companies suck up to china
e: abominable counted the east china sea as a part of china, which sparked controversy in the phillipines and malaysia
Disney was always a shitty evil company that's incapable of originality. Sorry to break it to ya.
Orbital Films about that...no
The ccp is good america lies about China. Now im gonna redeem my social points
Points were made😩
Hey, Pixar was pretty good until Inside Out, and that wasn't like too long back.

As they say; too many cooks will spoil the broth.
The witch throws a shuriken at Mulan, in a time period where they didn’t even exist. It’s most likely that they were also invented in Japan as well
They used a counterweight trebuchet in a time they didn't even exist. Also most likely invented in the Middle East/Europe.
Wanna know even more irony? "Witch" isn't even character in Chinese myth. No, seriously. Usually they have bad spirits for bad magical character ( Like Empress Daji Myth).
Basically they insert European character for Chinese setting movie.

It's not like as soon as Lee saw she was a girl he immediately thought "well, I'm gonna smack that booty, I want her I'm my bed right now!"
Like, is this how they see romantic relationships nowadays?
Im just glad his character wasnt ruined in this (by not appearing at all)
not sure what rock you live under... amount of depravity in 15-40 age bracket these days is colossal
Thank God I saw this comment. I thought the exact same thing. Sexual? Really? Why? I'm done with these people
I lol'd when I read the smack booty part when she was dressed as a man
Why did the "professional critic" said Liu Yifei's performance was amazing she had the same face literally the whole movie
They were talking about her performance sucking up to the CCP...
Lol 😂😂😂
stone cold stare🥵
Every single youtuber movie critic hates this movie. Chances are those "professional critics" are paid by disney.
M8 that's kinda racist
“Desert Goths” is actually perfectly accurate for the people’s being portrayed. There are distinct parallels between the Goths that fought the Romans and these “Desert Goths” fighting the Empire.
“Loyal, brave, true”
So they used the FBI motto???
Fidelity, Bravery, integrity.
Good job Disney very Chinese.
later the emperor gave her a new sword with a new 4th virtue and it's "Devotion to family". Kinda sounds like he's telling her to stay the fuck home, get married and have kids lol (I get it that they mean differently, probably? But it's a lame thing to put on the sword of a warrior lol)
@@vanessapham6914 he basically said "You served our country well and I thank you for your service. Now go back to the kitchen bitch"
@@vanessapham6914 it was just a bad job done on disney's part.. its supposed to mean fidial peity i think. in chinese culture its essentially showing respect and honor to our family. there isnt really an english translation that can capture what it really means.
@@cait3196 Yeah I think that's what they want it to convey. But since in the US for example, people can interpret it differently. Also, idk but in the movie they didn't show her being too devoted to the family and all that. It didn't show clearly that she went to war for her father's sake like in the animation. It seems more like she just want to fight. She didn't show much struggles during training either and seems very at home with the military, so... there wasn't anything she had to overcome for family honor. It's just... not clear what family devotion she showed that deserved to be added to the sword

@@jellyfishi_ Trust me, I don't understand it too (and I'm bi). A lot of fans are very much into making everything gay. It pisses me off because I'm friends with straight guys who don't even act close to their male friends anymore because they didn't want to be labelled gay. Most of those fans are straight girls who fetishize gay men, it's disgusting. Some do it because they want representation, which is odd because an unconfirmed bisexual character isn't representation at all.
@@jellyfishi_ He's not, they just desperately latch onto anything they can. Shang who respected Ping responded to him MUCH DIFFERENTLY than Shang who was interested in Mulan. This isn't rocket science, they just want to delude themselves.

I’m glad people know about, and acknowledge “Mulan: Rise of a Warrior.” I thought it was just some movie no one knew about.
Best part of Mulan (2020) is finding Mulan: Rise of a Warrior
and the 2009 one further emphasizes that Mulan can be portrayed as super talented and badass from the beginning too if it is well executed with emotional struggle and development of the main character.

IDK. Every time Mulan uses her chi powers looks pretty hilarious to me.
Seriously!!
