    Just found you Nate! I have been playing for IDK, a long time! Put sheet music in front of me and come hell or high water, I can (ultimately) play it. It is Improvisation that has been something that has been a challenge and something I really want to get better at. I have learned the Blues scale, but have had issues figuring out the chords for the left hand/bass. This was so very helpful - thank you!!! I hope this takes me to the next level!

    I've been improvising with 12 bar blues mostly with C / G minor major blues scales on and off for quite some time now...I'm not really a fan of boogie or woogie or faster blues and the 12 bar blues pattern is starting to get boring for me. So you've opened up a whole new improvisation track for me with the chord progressions in this video! And the improv at the end is great, please keep it coming with similar videos like this one:)

  • @vesuvius2444

    I've started my journey of learning styles/chord progressions to solo and improv on instead of just learning songs. You have a great way of teaching and making it simple.

    • @PianowithNate
      @PianowithNate  6 месяцев назад +1

      Go verrrrrry slow at first! Also, key is...if you cant do each hand separately with total ease, putting them together will only lead to frustration. Just be patient with yourself, everyone struggles with this at first!

    Hey nate new subscriber here awesome stuff! Im a theory guy hope you can help me..any reason why those chord progressions work well with the blues scale? Why wont other progressions work?

    • @PianowithNate
      @PianowithNate  8 месяцев назад +2

      Hi! Any chord progression using chords from the key of Cm (Cm, D°, Eb, Fm, Gm, Ab, Bb) will work, as the Cm blues scale is based off of that key. Blues is unique in that you can mix and match major and minor keys for that bluesy tension, so some chords from the key of C MAJOR also work, (C, F, G). The main chord progression I do here is mostly in the key of C minor, but borrowing the F chord from the key of C major and I think it sounds cool. But if you were to deviate to a chords from another key entirely (i.e. C#) it would sound bad unless you were using the C# blues scale. Cheers!

    Why are the chords not in the notes of the scale?

    • @PianowithNate
      @PianowithNate  2 месяца назад

      Good question! The blues scale is a modified pentatonic scale which is a smaller collection of notes that works well over many chords. It doesnt work quite the same way as a major scale that defines a "key" where you would expect the chords to be made only of notes from that scale. Even then, rules are often broken. There's also the added dimension that blues scales work well over the major and paralell minor - that bluesy sound thrives on tension. This chord progression is a combo of the keys of C minor and C major. It's helpful to learn and follow music theory conventions, but at the end of the day, the important thing is that it sounds good!
