Nate, congrats. This is the best online tutorial I could find. Crystal clear, showing notes and chords, excellent songs masterfully taught. Keep up the great work !!!
Thank you so much! I tried other tutorials and no one got it exactly like this. Amazing to be able to play it i hope in a few days, or less if possible 😃
Woke up to my first earthquake Sunday night. I'd been dreaming I was running through Jerusalem and when I awoke to find my bed shaking--and I wondered if I was going nuts--I heard "Imagine" in some corner of my mind. And now here I am, almost finished learning to play and sing this song at a moment when it truly feels like a prayer. So happy I found your channel, I love the way you teach.
I just got a keyboard, gonna slam my head against this until I learn it. Glad I stayed for the end, that was beautiful. I like to think that John would be proud. Subbed.
Thank you nate i learned to play the entire imagine song by john lennon and you explain and teach very well love this tutorial, could you please do Bohemian Rhapsody next?
Nate, you have brought my playing on immeasurably. I remember listening to the album at school for hours on end over 50 years ago. This is one of my favourite songs, and now to be able to play it, and perform at open mic in a few weeks is just fantastic. I cannot thank you enough for your absolutely brilliant teaching videos. Take care, and I await more, although I have plenty of your previous ones to go on with.
So well done, Nate! And your cover of the entire song at the end is amazing :) Thanks for all your hard work and what you GIVE us for free. I plan to enroll in your course after my busy tax filing season. See ya soon.
I was certain (and still am) that the D is an harmonic of the piano itself but I add it like you do because it sounds like what we hear. But look at any video you find with John Lennon playing, he nerver hits the D.
Some people have commented that on the studio recording there are two pianos layered, with the second one adding that D. Seems like a possibility since the D sounds really present to me. Regardless of the sound source, it is certainly present and I personally think it sounds good and right, so I play it :)
@@PianowithNate Of course it sounds great! I love this D (and as I said, I play it) but I heard an upright piano that naturally has this D when you play a regular major C. It sounds exactly like in the Imagine version. This harmonic is awesome!
⚠ IMPORTANT NOTE ⚠ The high D note that creates the Cadd9 is controversial. It is possible that John didn't actually play it and it is a resonant overtone created by that particular piano. Absolutely THE tutorial to learn this song with, and I've seen a few. So "lennonesque" and clearly explained without extraneous sidetracking, backtracking, or skipping!
Thanks, Nate. Thanks to you, now I can play "Imagine" of John Lennon! It is one of my favorite songs, and I really wanted to learn it. This is the first song that I have learned, and it makes me feel good. Now my family will be proud of me, and I am not anymore feeling sad about my illness... I will use the time that I have now, to learn more songs and become a good player of piano! ❤❤🎉🎉
I absolutely applaud all your very hard work.. you help so many people.. you are a gift from the gods… credit to your mum and dad.. keep up the fantastic work
My friend, I'm 63 years old and have played guitar, mandolin and uke for years ( not that great!) but, despite my sons and wife playing piano, I've never even really tried. They are all at a music festival this weekend and I'm dog-sitting at home, so I thought- why not? Found your video, and here I am playing those famous opening bars! Thank you!!!
Hello. Nate. Maybe you would consider doing "Knocking on Heavens door." I know it is a relatively simple song, but it would be nice if you were to make it accessible. I can't find a good version of it online that really explain the timing, the rhythm, or a melody line to go with it. Thanks for all the great songs you have done so far.
I've just started relearning piano after several decades of not playing, as my young daughters have started lessons. Your channel is really brilliant... thank you for all your dedication and excellent teaching approach ❤ Do you have the sheet music for this? I find reading notes easier than memorizing chords. 😊
This is awesome to hear! I dont have sheet music for it, as I put it together by ear. That said, my version is very accurate to what is played on the original recording, so if you search for accompaniment sheet music for that song, I bet you'll find something pretty similar!
This is an excellent video! Thanks so much. Plus, I like the way you play the song all the way through at the end. I find it a great learning tool as I try to play along with exactly what you are playing, keeping time etc.
Nate, all your tutorials have helped me so much! I really appreciate your channel! I was wondering if you could do, When She Loved Me by Sarah McLachlan?
I thought you were wrong about adding the high note for the add 9. I listened to original recording, and there it was. I've heard this song 100 times and never noticed that. You can barely hear it in recording.
Another great tune in the bag. Thanks Nate for the super logical teaching method. Next challenge, could you do a tutorial for Elton's Rocket man please?
Thanks so much, Nate. The best piano tutor so far. I hope you could teach the male piano version (lower key) of 'Easy on Me' of Adele by Boyce Ave. Kudos!
Hi! I don't have sheet music for it, as I put it together by ear and work strictly with a chord based approach. I have two suggestions: 1. If you are already proficient with traditional notation and prefer to learn that way, if you google search for "Imagine piano accompaniment sheet music", I bet you'll find something pretty similar! 2. Working with the more creative/flexible chord-based approach can be a great process to add to your arsenal. Indeed, not all information on rhythm and voicings is on the page, but it is all covered in the video. The chords/lyrics chart becomes a "map" to cue you as you play and sing your cover. This is the way John Lennon (who did not read sheet music) and, indeed, most pop/rock musicians approach it. It can be quite freeing, so I encourage you to give it a try if you are open to it. Either way, I hope you enjoyed the video. Good luck learning the song!
Thank you so much Nate. I am a beginner and I love the way you teach piano. For me it’s easier to learn a lesson with the sheet music rather than the chords on top of the words. Keep up the good works 👍🎶
Day two if learning piano at age 60. Saw a video showing the simple version with one base note played at the same time. I'm struggling with some muscle memory and hand placement. I love this song and prefer playing the same way recorded and this one is a good bit above but I will get it. I have played guitar for years and understand about chord prog, triads, scales circle of fifths and some of it has already helped. New subscriber and I appreciate this video and what you do.
Awesome! That's great that you are a guitar player, I definitely find that this chord-based approach to piano comes naturally to people who started on guitar. Thanks for the kind words!
This song has a double tracked piano. Only one of the tracks has the add 9 (D) on the main C chord. The double track is why people have a bit of trouble playing it alone because they are close but not exactly alike
Am I the only one who hears 2 pianos in the original Imagine recording? The first piano, which starts the music and has a lower volume, plays the C9, but the second piano, that is louder and starts with the voice, does not add the 9 to C.
Hi! There is no singing in the course, but it does focus on chord-based piano accompaniment with is typically used to accompany singing (similar to the style of playing I teach in this video). There are plenty of non-singers who enjoy my course...some are playing keyboard in a band or just expanding their musical horizons. However, if you are mostly interested in learning other styles (i.e. classical), then there are likely other courses out there that would be a better fit for you. Cheers!

I've checked out a few tutorials on this song. This is the best one I've found so far. I like that you're going over the fingering. Piano will be my 5th instrument. (I already pay guitar, mandolin, bass and harmonica.) Regarding your vocal technique, when you go into head voice, (a.k.a. Falsetto), tilt your head down to open your throat. You have 2 sets of vocal chords, an upper set and a lower set. In head voice, you are using the upper set of vocal chords and you need to lower your chin to open the throat. It's counterintuitive, but that's how it works.

Awesome as usual, You’re such a great teacher. What about “the look of love” by Burt Bacharach? Or an accompaniment for Charlie Chaplin’s “Smile” both are super popular and with your skillful approach, accessible to everybody .
I’ve thought about this…maybe I’ll test it! I’m curious why you think this? Not as a challenge, I’m just always interested to learn what would be most helpful for people.
Great tutorial, number one of all I found. I just can't get used to that add9, I cannot hear it on the (original?) recording and it doesn't sound right to me.
Hi! It's definitely there...I think the key is to make sure not to hit that note too hard...its just a bit of color, otherwise it can overwhelm the chord. BUT the most important thing is you enjoy playing it and it should sound good to you...so I say if the 9 doesnt feel right for you, skip it!

❤❤❤❤❤สอนเข้าใจง่ายมาก😊😊😊😊😊
Awesome as usual, You’re such a great teacher. What about “the look of love” by Burt Bacharach? Or an accompaniment for Charlie Chaplin’s “Smile” both are super popular and with your skillful approach, accessible to everybody .
I'll check these out!!
amazing tutorial. Can u pls do the golden hour..pllsss
I think if you play the whole song firt th3n tutirial, will have more view.
I’ve thought about this…maybe I’ll test it! I’m curious why you think this? Not as a challenge, I’m just always interested to learn what would be most helpful for people.
@@PianowithNate For my opinion, I also learning piano or most people want to see or listenin g first, about 5-10% will do the practice.
BUT the most important thing is you enjoy playing it and it should sound good to you...so I say if the 9 doesnt feel right for you, skip it!
,,, great 👍😎🤘
I love your online tutorial! I would love to take your piano song’s teaching class! Please let me know if you have one,Nate!
Hi thank you! Check out www.pianowithnate.com/piano-chord-breakthroughs
Nate, thanks for helping me clean up this tune. Side note, there is a second piano from a session man playing along.
Glad to hear it! And yes, I do realize that now and feel a little silly that I didn't at the time of making this video
