I totally understand that empty feeling when you're not seeing a lot of people like yourself in the community. As a fellow brown girl in SD, I feel it too. As far as swim clubs go, I want to check out one at the YMCA because I miss the pool!

Girl, SAME! I’ve been living in SD for 10 years now, I went to university here too. I think the sense of isolation (when it comes to not seeing lot of community and representation) can really get to you. I just got back from my third trip to London and it’s such a stark contrast (tons of black people there and you’ll be one of many black women out and about on any given day), it was actually a culture shock coming back to SD this time around because of that. I’m contemplating a move as well, I feel like it’s time and need that sense of community the older I get. Sending you support and positive energy on wherever your journey may take you next!

Love to see someone else like me living in a place I've always been dying to go too. Everyone keeps telling me to just go for it and go to SD and I always stop myself. I still want to visit first, I love my city but I need something new. But do what is best for you and I know wherever you'll go, you'll thrive

Don't leave!!!! You're right Mission and Pacific Beach really do not have a lot of diversity. I use to walk Mission Beach every morning and I was the only black person. Nice Q&A.

🍓🍒🍑🍇 I love the sink or swim mindset - I definitely need to put myself in more situations that challenge me (but can lead to great gains)! Another great video

🍓🍒I live in culver city and have the same issue, there are very few black people in many of our areas so all of my friends are hispanic or white/asian I can count on one hand the black friends I have and like you said yes your friends will always be great and understanding but friends of the same race tend to relate more to cultural things we grow up with. I have Nigerian friends and sometimes they mention stuff that i cant relate to as a non nigerian but then ill mention Polynesian things that they dont understand so its really beneficial to have those close friends of the same race. Same with dating im fine with dating outside of my race but sometimes cultural things will set us apart and its hard to explain why our families do certain things or why something is important to us but not to them.

As a San Diego Native it’s hard living in the beach towns because there’s no diversity. A lot of families of color are in the more central areas. There’s so much diversity in San Diego as a whole just not in the smaller costal communities unfortunately because we’ve been priced out.

It’s segregated here and cloudy… but it is a peculiar city! Worth a visit for anyone but rated one of the worst cities for black women. Don’t move here! 🥴

As a woman of color and much older than you, I have still never understood the "I need to see people like me" type of mindset. I totally disagree with you when you say that "there are
just some things that only someone in the "black community" can understand. I don't understand that either--"This black community" what community is that exactly? And i'm saying all this just to make you think- make you and others think. Do you truly feel that way or do you feel that you have to say that because people have told you that? Believe me I have lived almost all of my life well-- I should say my younger years- teenager and younger being called all kinds of names by people of my race because I really truly refuse to see color and I am of the mindset that there is no such community. The community is your environment. It's the environment that you grew up in. just because you may be of the same race or skin color of someone else does not mean that you grew up the same way with the same values with the same anything and that is the danger --that is why we are in so much trouble as a society because people have brought into that freaking mindset and are pretty much brainwashed into believing it. If how you grew up and what you experienced growing up is different than the majority of other people of your race, there's something wrong with that. Or for people to make you feel like you're so odd or different or that there's something wrong with you because you think differently again based on the environment you grew up in and the belief systems that you have, that's absolutely not true. Where is it written that we're all supposed to have the same experience and think the same way? This has always bothered me nd I promise you Devon, I've had the same attitude and opinion since I was probably five or six years old. Anybody in my family can tell you that and what was so discouraging was that people told me as I grew olde that I would understand more and I would change my mind and I wouldn't feel that way well. I feel this way even stronger. I feel that a lot of the things that people say perpetuate racism and perpetuate the division. And it's little things that people don't even think about. But you need to think about it, if you want to be the change, be the change and just be more aware of the way you think and the things you say and when I say "you" I'm not speaking of you specifically, I'm saying that, as a generalization. To assume that you have more in common with someone just because they have the same skin color as you is just totally not true and I know that first hand and am speaking of experience. Many many years of it.
    I hope.
You receive the snow spirit in which it is intended period it's not to berate you or can make you feel any certain kind of way but it's just to really make you think I mean, truly make you think you are a very intelligent lady and I would like to think that if you were. To sit down and just actually as you go through your data. Data data data data data data data. Go through your day to day life. Just think about what i've said and maybe just maybe you will see that i'm right and you will start living your life more like that and bringing others along with you. And then that person will influence someone else's thinking and that person will change someone else and so on and so on and so on. Just take it one step at a time, one person at a time.

This was such a heartless, rude and unnecessary comment to make that is based on a small clip of her video. You do not know her lived experiences or what calls her to see the world that way. It’s not like her statement was causing harm to anyone, it was simply an observation (one that many people have made before). Please hold your reflections in a journal or something and not in people’s comment section.

I totally understand what she’s saying. She probably just wants to live in a more diverse area. I moved to Pittsburgh from the state of DE and found myself in many ‘white only’ settings (not on purpose). Pittsburghers told me the history of the city and how it’s very segregated. There are parts where it’s more diverse however, I was expecting the city to be just as if not more diverse than the state of DE.
I also grew up as a military brat so I’m used to diversity snd would prefer diversity over being around one group of people.
I have to add that if you’re not a black woman then maybe you won’t understand it from a black woman’s perspective. I can’t speak for other POCs bc I can’t relate to their experiences, only black women.

    • @devonyoumans

Hi! Fortunately for all of us, you don’t ever have to understand my mindset or way of thinking. Maybe you do not enjoy being around people of your own race but I do. I have friends of every race and although the friendship is deep and beautiful, my white friends will never understand things that my black friends just inherently know simply because they are black. I don’t “wish to be the change” I wish to be surrounded by people who know and get me on a deeper level due to shared experiences. If the way in which I decide to live my life and the desires of my heart are triggering to you, I suggests doing a bit of soul searching of your own. And maybe therapy as well.
