I don't know, I just feel like, honestly what’s going on, why is everything all of a sudden about luxury brands? Like bags, skincare, perfumes, shoes, it feels like these last few years it’s as if luxury products no longer are just for the 0.1 percent, but something we should all aspire to, no matter our income, as if we’re not living life successfully if we can’t afford chanel jewellery and biannual botox treatments. How did this happen, when did we get so caught up in material wealth as our only indicator of success, and why do we want to live our lives as if feeling beautiful is you know a matter of money.

The most difficult thing is not being able to buy a house, a home where you can be yourself and find your true calling. In this day and age, the market is crazy, and that is the biggest problem in my opinion. All other possessions are optional, but not being able to have "your place" (literally and metaphorically) in the world is incredibly demotivating.

I grew up poor. But, "wealthy" in my town in rural Canada, meant your parents had 2 t.v.'s and a two vehicles and Santa was more generous with the presents at Christmas. That was it. I had ZERO knowledge of what was going on in the rest of the world.
I moved to London, England at age 18 & worked in a grocery store. Noone had a vehicle or even a phone in their home! This was 1988. We worked, then socialized in the pub. No awareness outside of that.
This modern world of social media where everyone knows about people outside their "social class" is actually quite damaging. It produces depression. We think it encourages us to strive for more. But, I question that. People who are ignorant of the wealth they dont or will never have are actually happier. They aren't locked into an endless cycle of comparison. ♥️🇨🇦

When I moved to England I tought I was going to be buying everything I can get my hands on because of financial stability I didn't have before. 6 years in and I'm wearing clothes until they fall apart. It really is about creating a life filled with memories, good food and travel rather than material things. Great video, as always 😊
I make sure I don't buy anything with labels. I put clothes together that look stylish, but no one knows how much money I spent. I could be wearing an expensive sweater and get complements because it looks good on me not because of the label. And, I really don't talk about where I buy my clothes. Mystery is every thing!
Nice topic. I'm lucky to be a rocker who never ever cared about brands. If anything, designer stuff repels me. But I noticed an interesting contrast in my life: the less stable income I had the more inclined I was to buying new clothes, shoes and cosmetics. The more stable income I have the less I buy. And I can see this is what many people do when it comes to designer stuff. Technically they can't afford it but they buy it anyway.

I definitely think it makes people feel temporarily better about their place in the the world. Especially now, where the illusion of wealth is a status symbol onto itself and appears to grant privileges.
Have you noticed an increase in tv shows about rich families and their lifestyle recently? I was talking about this with my boyfriend last night… we are influenced to achieve that lifestyle both from social media and tv or maybe they are making tv shows on this topic because there is demand from the audience? It all reflects what you said, Jenny. Very inspiring for me, as I’m currently in the process to rediscover my style and self expression through clothes. Thank you! x

I think if someone comes away from watching "Succession" liking the characters or the way they live, they missed the point. Most of these shows are soap operas with rich people who do nasty things in order to get More Stuff and wind up miserable. That inspires me not to be like them.

I'm feeling very grateful for what I already own. I've been doing a no-buy since the beginning of this year. The only thing I had to purchase was a replacement pair of jeans because I wore my other pair so much that they have holes now. My family has handed me down a sewing machine and I have a growing pile of nice clothes to alter. So I feel really good about not having to spend money on new-to-me clothes, and about learning the skill of sewing to help me fill in the gaps in my wardrobe and make my collection work better for me. 💕 I love your content and your outlook in this video 💕
Canadian here. So much of what you describe about stability and what actually feels like a rich, creative and bespoke life resonates. Laughed when you described yourself as going 'granny,' cause I'm pretty sure I'm a decent chunk of years older thank you :) I enjoy fashion for self-expression and how the clothes feel on my body. Can't stand ostentatious brands which often don't have better quality or sustainability standards than smaller creative shops.
I like your expression "that's just spice". There are so many things I'd love to have and do in my life, but they aren't the essential ingredients. They're just the spice - the addition or enhancement - to the essential elements that already make my life whole and happy.

My budget is tiny-extra low income according to my county in Washington state-but because I have what I need to eat healthy and to express my true self artistically in my appearance and surroundings, I feel absolutely wealthy. It’s almost as if because the internet and (all kinds of) influencers are accessible, then so too are their lives. It’s so good to dream and be inspired, but it’s equally important to be critical (while staying kind!). I indulge in those bougie RUclipsrs from time to time because it’s a little bit like watching a bit of trash tv 🙊 but do feel like even then there is a limit… like when they can’t remember if their Celine sweater was £1,000 or £2,000 I get the ick, so to speak. I love your videos Jenny, they always make me think!

It makes me think of how in the 60s and 70s, some of the hippies would just mesh their fashions themselves when they practically lived in vans and on the streets or communes. They didn't have money but were able to express themselves. I have a love for sustainability and ethically sourced materials and clothing. I think that a lot of minimalists own less in clothing but go for long lasting high quality. I really wish I could spend $200 on a dress more regularly, but at least when I have done that, I can wear it every week and know it will hold up for a long time compared to something made cheaply for $15.
Well, my mother left me all her jewelry. I put on a purple sweatshirt, and wore her fancy purple pearls! I call that dressed up, and I'm a retired professional! No more fancy for me, unless its from a Thrift Shop! Us Swedes are smart when it comes to this!!
Nice perspective, but we can only find all those fantastic nearly-new quality catches at thrift store because someone else bought it and then threw it away (or we can call it a donation to be politically correct). The amount of clothes that come to these stores nowadays is bonkers, with newer and newer items on the rack. I am very happy to fynda (find a good catch), of course, but it scares me how easy it became to buy something that is HQ and still in trend secondhand. We certainly overproduced and overconsumed. When my friends comment that I dress more and more in "old money" style, I tell them that indeed it is Swedish old money that young adults are currently wasting away by shopping non-stop & maybe 1-2 occasional actual modern vintage finds. :)
This video came at a very significant time for me. It was my birthday last week, and my aunt sent me a small sum of money to buy something that I wanted, something that isn't a necessity. So I was just now looking at what classic red lipstick I should buy. And even though I would love something like a Givenchy lipstick for the quality people speak of, I will choose a cheaper alternative at this time in my life.
I've been truly struggling financially this winter, as there have been few illustration and graphic design jobs this season. I am not alone in this situation as my whole industry is struggling, but it has been so hard to talk about. I've taken a job in a bookshop in order to have some income, but it is not enough to sustain me. And being creative and productive when you lack money for food and your phone bill is very hard. I felt so rich when I got paid now after literally not eating properly for days, and I could finally buy myself food and even a bar of chocolate. So I'm definitely not rich in a monetary way right now, but I live in Norway and I do have a place to stay with family, and I know that they will not let me starve. I still don't see myself as poor even if my bank account is empty, because I see everything else that I have, and I see hope for it to improve soon.

Happiness and success are unique definitions for everyone, and they should not look the same for everyone. Wealth does not guarantee happiness. As a Mexican who moved to Canada 13 years ago, when I was 23 years old, I visit Mexico every year to meet my friends and family. I am always amazed by the difference in happiness among people. I believe that happiness is more about unity in families and personal connections than about wealth. I have seen many people in Mexico who may not have much wealth but enjoy life to its fullest, compared to my anxious, lonely, or depressed neighbours who have everything they could need in Canada. Of course, there are happy people in Canada and sad people with lots of concerns in Mexico, but overall, I am always amazed by the willingness of people to find joy, music, laughter, and closeness, even in adversity.

Hi Jenny. Thanks for making this video. I love your content and always look forward to your videos. I'm about to turn 30 and feeling like I'm needing to "put in the work" to glow up. I could continue on as I have been. About a year ago I hated what I saw in the mirror and decided to start putting money towards looks and fashion and tbh I've very happy and my self confidence has slightly went up. It's so expensive though. I'm doing it all on a budget, not going overboard but realistically allocating money to cosmetics, clothing and going and seeing my dermatologist and doing some light lasers. I've spend about $4000 in the past year and it's worth every penny. Now I'm struggling to keep the budget at that. I'm so happy with the results but looking into "more" and I hate it. Your video is such a good reminder to balance investing in yourself and celebrating what you have. Thank you so much. I hope you and David have a lovely week full of creative energy. 💕
Thank you for doing this vlog! I constantly “yell” at vloggers when I hear them barfing all the luxury brands and admiring their puffed up lips slathered with Chanel gloss. Like, good grief, some are obviously under-educated and never slogged at multiple jobs, working for a pittance. I am not impressed by “family wealth” as much as I am by humility and grace. I never thought that I need a villa with a pool (or multiple homes) to be happy. I would be content wth a nice flat or a small house with small garden. More space and more rooms means more cleaning, right? xD

So true! Just as if you could buy yourself style- it’s just so not true! You could look like a Queen/King on a budget and look so wired with designerbrands. It‘s about the Attitude, your vibe and the creativity+ feeling comfortable and sparceling in whatever you are wearing.
That’s exactly it, financial stability. That’s all I need and want. Beyond that it’s just spice.

i grew up in a small town, too, where everyone was low-middle class, and i think it really helps with being chill about excessive wealth as an adult comparing to those who grew up in big cities next to all the wealth they didn’t have.

I don't know if expressing oneself through what they wear is for everyone. I have been trying to do this for years and I never feel like "myself" when I look in the mirror. Maybe its because I live so much in my head and I want people to know and love me for my mind. Does anyone else feel this way? Thanks for the lovely video Jenny :)

I completely agree with you! As long as I have enough money to afford a nice place to live and buy all the yummy food I like, I'm good. One of the best things I've read about money is to ask the question what can money do for you, not what you can do for money. For me that means aspiring to have enough money to do the things I want to do, and not to view money as a goal in and of itself. Great video as always:)

I’m 24, I have a job that I love and allows me to express myself… but that is also very poorly paid, and won’t grow in the next years. Having his own comfortable home and feeling secure really seems an unattainable dream. it’s quite painful even to think about it.
But what can I do, changing myself? Always dreaming about being another kind of person.
At the risk of sounding quite elderly, I worry about young women today seeing all the luxury brands and pressure to make that their norm. It's hard enough when you are young and starting out a life without worrying about having the fanciest clothing, cars, high end makeup and electronics and I think it's becoming the "must have" because of media. I remember growing up and being a teen of the 90s when we aspired to nicer things but just having ANY car, job, and cute secondhand clothes was good enough. It saddens me to see girls working hard and feeling they will never measure up to stars and influencers.

The only times I buy brand is when fleamarket didn’t catch that it was a brand and underpriced it tremendous. Found a tiger dress and an acne dress that way 😌
And the only brand thing I buy as new is lipstick and sunglasses. I rather own 2-3 lipsticks that makes me feel expensive than have 50 that doesn’t give that effect. And I rather own 1 pair of sunglasses that makes me feel fashion than 10 different cheap one. In whole that’s also better in a ecological footprint perspective

Congrats on living the dream. I still fondly remember the day I was at this stationer's shop and saw your face on the cover and thought of how proud David must be to be with you. I mean "cover girl" is an idiom, and this time, it was different, since you've been together all along and have worked on this together. And now, the book. Another big achievement. Congrats again.
Cross-promotion and fakes is what made luxury labels big *Gucci Gang, Gucci Gang, Gucci Gang, Gang, Gucci Gang". Promotion from the labels makes it look like people who wear the luxury brands are rich, but are they really? What is the next step? Real luxury brands taking licensing money from the fakes? ;-)
I feel like I would like more time to do the things that make me happy. I dare say that means less time spent on youtube.
My style today, well, I know that it's meh. In a way, it's normcore of the original Larry David kind, but not through lack of knowledge, having grown up in a family of tailors, but rather through other priorities and using the time for those instead. I'll let you know in the comments some time if / when personal style has become important enough again for me to actually pursue it. Until then, I continue my minimalist, sustainable, normcore tendencies in the looks department.

Totally get you. I also lived once (only shortly before high school in my case) in a socialist country. Everybody thinks that that meant “behind the iron curtain”, but we weren’t like that at all. We had access to all the good music and even fashion, combined with the benefits like free education (faculty included), healthcare, childcare, free travel to everywhere (like no visas to either side of the polarized world). People were mostly proud of our country, of course not everyone… And as you said, not many people have been rich, but who cared, we did not even know we could want more and more. We ruined it, or whoever ruined it for us, and what we have now is so ugly. Greediness, not caring for others is ugly, not lack of material stuff. Hope you manage to keep this human approach to life in Sweden. It seams it is corroding everywhere. No design-ware is worth that feeling of safe life and equality. Love your videos, your speach about closing the wealth gap is so needed… J. ❤
Which socialist country behind the iron curtain had the people that were proud of it at the time? Asking, because most (not all, of course) socialist territories at that time were occupied and deprived to provide the abundance of quality goods to those in the power and their families/friends.
It was Yugoslavia, so beautiful while it was whole, it had Croatian sea and beautiful mountains in Slovenia and Montenegro. It was not behind any curtain, certainly not iron, as I sad. We had almost no visas, and had almost completely self-sufficient industry and food production. And yes, people were very proud how they rebuilt it after the WWII where it was heavily involved and destroyed. People who were very poor had the chance to get to the best education, it was utopia, torn that has been removed from todays world. It will always be someone who will cynically belittle that.

I know that comparisons are odious, but to me, Jenny and people who put effort and creativity into their look are far more beautiful than people who just buy everything. A certain family whose names all begin with a certain letter come to mind: to me, none of them are remotely beautiful.

Botox? I can't believe that this now is a normal thing to say and do. I'm 55 and don't know anyone that bothers about Botox. I feel very lucky to belong to a generation that, for the majority, still allows itself to age naturally. At least here in Europe.
