Never knew them as flip flops growing up, always "thongs" in English "chanclas" in Spanish. Tongs were used in the kitchen.

When I was growing up in the 50's and 60's we called the rubber sandals "THONGS" and there were no clothing thongs that I knew of like today! Thongs meant rubber beach sandals and that was all! (I live in NY on Long Island) How did the animals react to the earthquake? Did it do any damage on your property or in your area? Glad everything was OK.

Any sandle which has a support between the large toe and the toe next to it is referred to as a thong. The term is not limited to the rubberized/plastic beach sandals.

We were near a small creek and we could see the water ripple. It was a 3.5 on the scale. It may as well been a 10 the way it felt from being on that horse!! We had to get off and walk them home.🐴🙄

I grew up in CA. In the 50's they were zorries or thongs and occasionally they were called beachwalkers. Then in the early 60's we called them flipflops. When I had my kids in the 70s they were referred to as flipflops. When we went to Hawaii they were called slippas. Never heard of them called tongs.

Never heard flip flops called tongs. Here in Michigan in the 60s and 70s they were either flip flops or thongs. My mom calls them zorries. Never heard of thong underwear until I was an adult.

I'm with you Brooke, I don't like cold damp weather either. I grew up in the Willamette Valley here in Oregon. It's rainy 8 months of the year and hot as haties during the summer. I've lived in California and Alaska (both places with earthquakes). I found that the cold in AK has little to no humidity and the cold is dry. In 1990 right before Xmas we moved back to Oregon and my 2 younger boys went nuts... it was 53 degrees, the boys thought it was summer because there was no snow and the grass was green. Out they went in shorts and barefooted and my moms neighbor asked her if there was something wrong with them or me. Mom laughed and told her no that we were from Alaska and thought it was summer.
Don't even get me started about earthquakes, 1971 the Selmar quake in CA was a 7.1 was the worst one, everything fell the TV on spindly legs jumped all over the living room. Look it up you can see all the damage. Any way, just before the ground began to move it screamed the most terrifying sound I've ever heard. I was 8 months pregnant and in bed when it hit. I sat bolt upright, I normally had to roll out of bed, and yelled we're being bombed. I've been in hundreds mostly small under 3 after living in LA area for 6 yr then San Francisco for 4. Spent 8 yrs in Alaska. Yep I know earthquakes. I also lived in So Indiana and have experienced tornadoes on occasion. I prefer Oregon and the rain...
Take care, be safe, stay healthy.
      MERRY CHRISTMAS

“Thongs” in 1950s SoCal. 10 cents a pair at Cornet store. They had silhouettes of them painted on the floor so you knew what size to buy. Got two pair to last the Summer…or go barefoot. Which I did most of the time.
Obviously I grew up with earthquakes. To feel a 3.0 earthquake it has to be fairly shallow. USGS shows your earthquake was at 0.0 depth. On the surface?? Do you have fracking near you?

I thought I was going to freeze. I could feel the cold clear to my core. Alaska is dessert so the cold is dry and you have to dress for the weather because you don’t feel the cold but you better dress for it because you can freeze your hands before you know it.

The problem with our southern winters is the humidity. One year many years ago we had friends from Upstate New York coming for Mardi Gras week. We talked to them before and told them to bring their heavier winter clothes because they were forecasting temperatures at and below freezing. They laughed and said they were used to -32 and below where they live. Well they came with their fall clothes and were borrowing clothes every time we went outside. They had problems understanding why they were so cold when they said they were layering clothes and it was still freezing them down to their bones when at home they would be fine with a couple of layers. We checked the weather channel and we found the difference was definitely the humidity levels that come with our cold. Merry Christmas 🎄 and Happy New Year 🎆 to you all. You had a very blessed year in 2021 and I hope God’s Blessings continue through out 2022.

I had just walked into our bedroom in the trailer side when it shook and it sounded like the tin roof was rolling down the length of the trailer. Our small dog all of a sudden came running to me. We had an earthquake in the DC area on August 23,2011 sometime in the afternoon. I was standing in the kitchen when I thought I heard the rumble of thunder, but at the same time, I felt a rolling sensation under my feet. I looked at the TV and within minutes the story came up about the earthquake. Weirdest feeling like being on a boat that’s going through some rolling waves. Will never forget that sensation.
I’ve learned since then that because the East Coast is older that the West, the motion from an eastern quake can be felt farther away. We do have plates on the eastern half of the country, just like the west, but the age difference causes differences in how these plates move. Just checked and it seems the epicenter of your quake was about 9 miles northwest of Clanton. You’re located at the south end of the Southern Appalachian Seismic Area (happy for Google where I got this info). Glad you’re all safe.

We have had a few big ones and if you are at or close to the epi center it can feel larger than it really is. There are hard jerking earthquakes and rolling earthquakes(or both) and they both feel different because earthquakes move thru the earth differently. The last large earthquake in CA was a 7.1 in 2019 with only 5 deaths. So I'll take an earthquake over a tornado or hurricane any day.

Earthquakes sometimes sound like a train or a big truck hitting the house, or rumblings. There is so much energy being released and plates are moving. Sometimes the plates are pushed into one another or there is a resistant area and the energy is stopped. It’s kind of like clapping your hands when the two meet. Glad you are all right.
