How to repair a Deadbolt that wont unlock

  • Hi and welcome back to my channel. Last week when my kids came home they could not unlock the front door deadbolt. In this short video I repair the deadbolt in under 8 minutes.
I first started by unscrewing the 2 bolts on the deadbolt which are located inside the house with a Philips screwdriver. Do not use a power tool here because you may damage the lock further.
After the lock was removed (this is easier if you have a second person on the other side of the door) I was able to access the sliding bolt mechanism. I used my Philips screwdriver in an attempt to move the bolt back into the door. I placed the screwdriver into the the place where the bolt shaft inserts, and attempted to move it back and forth. It took a few minutes but the bolt finally released back into the door. I then put the deadbolt back together and tested the bolt before closing the door and locking it again.
I believe the door needs to be pushed from the inside or pulled from the outside when unlocking / locking to keep the bolt from having pressure on it from the strike pate.

My door kept struggling to unlock and then today, it wouldn't unlock at all. I attempted to take it apart and it still wouldn't budge. I thought I could just replace it but since it wouldn't unlock I started thinking of a locksmith. Then I decided to Google and your video popped up. Let me tell you - I'm so grateful. My supermom cape is still on thanks to you!

Worked for me. I needed to add some weird shiny black grease stuff and now it turns like sliding through hot butter. I do remember my hubby using this special grease when he fixed a stuck dead bold before. But I did have to take it apart to get to turn it with the screw driver first. I just kept working the grease back in a little bit as a time and them it finally slit right open so I greased it lightly in the all the way open position Then I gently wiped off any excess as hubby had told me he had to do so to not gather dust.

I was trying to get my deadbolt unstuck and watched your video as well as one other. However, the deadbolt turned out not to be the problem. For future issues, check if humidity is affecting the door. We just had a couple of days of rain and apparently, some got between the door and the door jamb. I sprayed WD-40 along the jamb just as a last hail mary and it opened right up. Gotta love WD-40.

This just happened to me on my front door luckily I have a back door key and my screen door wasn’t locked or else I’d have to use the window lol. but my dead bolt wouldn’t retract the way you did it so I had to bust that part out completely and I was able to get the deadbolt bar to retract and it opened. your tutorial did definitely help me tho with more of an idea of what to do luckily I had a spare deadbolt laying around and it works great now thank you for this upload. It actually probably saved me 100$ Canadian as locksmiths especially here aren’t cheap or they try to rip you off.

Note: I had a forewarning that this was about to happen as the deadbolt was intermittently only retracting 95% and had to be manually pushed in with my index finger in order to close. I didn't realize this was a warning at the time, but now I do!

Thank you for this! The simple “fix” worked. Something to try before calling the experts. I suspect that with door swelling from recent rains, or even house settling pushed my deadbolt (one year old) harder to one side. There seems to be a threshold, past which the deadbolt almost locks into position. Even pushing or pulling the door wouldn’t allow the key to work. I simply placed a small screwdriver into the hole and turned it several times without forcing it, as you demonstrated. It simply started working.

I had to break a window to get in my house! You have to change the batteries, but there should be a code that should unlock your door even if the batteries are dying down! There should be an "unlock" code in a situation like this!

I have a double door. The door mechanism is like yours.,but much flimsier. I too tried inserting a screw driver in the center hole . I will call it the transmission plate or TP ,from now on. That entire TP fell apart as I used the screwdriver in the TP's center hole and then the other hole closest to the plunger/bolt. All of that plate disintigrated. Now Im looking at an empty casing with the return spring inside it that allows the locking plunger to unlock. Nothing I can get ahold of to pull it back. It was stuck anyhow cause I couldnt leverage it back out with the screw drivers. So all I should have to do is take the right door off its hinges and pull the doors apart and unscrew the plunger & casing in /on the left door edge. But nooo the right door's "slide bolts" are ingaged into the threshold and header so it is locked in place. If I took the right door off the hinges,I couldnt pull that right door out cause the slide bolts wont let the rt door even begin to move outward. If I had an electric metal hacksaw I could cut both latch bolts through the doors top & bottom 1/4 in spacing. Any ideas Any ideas?

Hi.. 1st off out of Curiosity, did a Child move out yet, to where you got your Drum Set??
😉~😃.. This just happened to my Deadbolt, and I was frightened because I was Home alone, with Lumbar, & an assortment of other Health Issues.. 52 is not that old, but with the compounding Health Issues, Jumping out of The Window is a No-go, unless there was a Life threatening event to where I had too, I do enjoy Breathing, it brightens my day.. 🤫🤫~🤭🤭~😉😉 Back to topic, I did what you did, (& got it unlocked) but I noticed the Metal bar that goes (on mine, where you put your philips) into the handle, it broke off while twisting because the end looked as if it were twisted.. I cannot get it out,, due to that,, therefore i can't get the handle on the outside off to replace it.. Any Suggestions Please????

Kwikset has failed me several times - at least five! When I used to live alone, I would keep my bedroom door closed because of the cats interrupting my sleep all night long, and one night the doorknob mechanism failed, and I was stuck inside my bedroom for over two hours. It wasn't even locked, and although the doorknob turned, the latch wouldn't move! I had no phone in there, no tools, and it was the middle of the night and I had to use the bathroom! I finally got the screws out with my eyebrow tweezers! If I lived out in the country instead of in Chicago where I could have called for help out of my window, I could have died in there, especially if it happened in a basement with no window at all.

Taking something apart, fiddling with it until it somehow starts working and putting it back together is not repairing it because if it jammed once, it will probably jam again. Murphy's law suggests next time it'll jam during a fire. The title should be "How to OPEN a deadbolt that won't unlock."

Sorry, with all do respect, you didn't 'fix' anything, just unjammed the lock. There is no guess as to 'why' it jammed and how to stop it from jamming again... which will happen for certain. It's only a matter of time... let's hope the house isn't on fire when it happens.

This isn’t any help, you fully skipped over unsticking the bolt mechanism. Anybody could pop a couple screws and turn in manually. I’ve got a bolt with a broken mechanism so the bolt is stuck open with no way of manually unlocking, an actual problem.

You should have just replaced the bolt. That would have been the repair. They run a few bucks. This problem will happen again. I deal with Kwikset all the time.
