In all my 52 years of carpentry, I never encountered the lock with hidden screws under a face plate. I'm now ready for my future encounter, thanks to your video.
Fortunately it was the inside face and not the exterior one.
Some old Dexter brand locks do/did that also.
I'm a locksmith I love locks. That security screw you can push down n turn hard with a flat screwdriver, or notch it with a Dremel slot.
I love the way you explain things. Thank you 🙏
This is great, so many people might look at that lock and just give up. You made it look so easy Leah!
BEST show on RUclips! I’ve learned so much. Thank You!
Leah always keeps her promises: I can do this! On the surface, it might look like an impossible task, but Leah will show how its done. Thank you so much for taking the time, even for the little explainers, e.g. what is a double keyed deadbolt. For a moment there I thought I might have to google it, but no, Leah delivers as always 🙂
As usual great tutorial especially about removing the security screw, thanks for this
Thanks for your expert advice always waiting for the next clip.
Great demonstration, as always. Thank you.
PSA: I’d like to add a note that locks requiring a key to get out are unsafe (fire) and against code in most cases. You should be able to exit by simply turning a one-sided thumb turn.
Great point!
My daddy taught me that double-keyed deadbolts are needed to secure doors with glass lites in them. Otherwise people can just break the glass and turn the thumb turn from the outside. Is there another option that gives you both fire safety and break-in security? (Besides "don't have windows in your doors, stupid!")
When a live meat bag is inside, they can leave the key used for entry in the lock.
There can also be one kept nearby.
Anecdotal story.
A local gun shop was having problems passing the fire inspection before opening for business.
The fire marshal had issue with the security doors not being able to be opened from the inside.
“What if a burglar breaks in through the roof, there is a fire, how will he escape?”
The response
“He’s stealing from a gun store. Why would you want him to escape?”
They were able to open for business shortly thereafter.
I would think a lock like that would be best in a door with a window in it. That way a thief couldn't break the glass and turn the latch.
Hey Leah, just a word of warning, the frame at 0:38 where the key is entirely sideways is enough for someone to be able to cut a copy of your key. Deviant Ollam has a few videos on this topic. Stay safe out there!
Yeah, I made two copies and went down to the address she supplied and robbed the place. I scored a 1984 Mitsubishi TV and a lawn mower.
To be fair, these locks are not all that secure in general, someone who is able to cut that key is likely also skilled enough to operate a basic lock-picking set.
@@mr.g937 While true, it is *infinitely* easier to get a key cut than to perform a bump or pick the lock
All locks are simply meant to dissuade people wanting a quick steal, and to be marginally more secure than your neighbors.
If someone wants something bad enough, they'll just cause damage instead of be stealthy
@@erepsekahs Cmon where's my tv....bring it back!

I love learning from you, Miss Leah!! You are the best!!
Your videos are most EXCELLENT, you are SUCH a POSITIVE charge.. Thank you
Love all the information you share with us Leah, thank you so much.
IM SOOOO HAPPY to have found you again… where have you been? I miss your videos, they are the most comprehensive videos from all that I’ve seen; I’m glad you are back Leah! I really love you🙏🙏❤️❤️
Thank you. I was away from RUclips for 3 months while I appeared on the History Channel's "Secret Restoration " tv show
Thanks, Leah. I'm excited to see you working on the house.
Another Great video Leah! Wish you would go over issues that can be fixed with a dead bolt and those that cannot. Thanks
What a great video presentation. Thank you, Ma'am!
Thank you! I was having a problem removing a plate and this gave me the answer I was looking for (even though it was a different issue). I love you!
this is one on me, glad I found it, I've never seen this in my 45 years in the trades
Awesome job! Thanks for sharing.
Exactly exactly what I needed. Thank you.
Thanks for this! Super helpful and made swapping out the lock easy.
I had visible screws on the face plate of the deadbolt and thought that was it. What i didn’t know was they were inside two more screws that could only be accessed by taking down the key plate. This video helped out SOOOOO much. Thank you!!
Great info to know Leah.....thanks for sharing!
You are a Rock Star Leah!
Very cool information. I won't be keeping this a secret. Thank you Leah!!
It's so encouriging watching your videos!

Your amazing, another home run. Thanks
I am blown away by your videos. Became huge fan.
Thanks Yuliya
Woohoo! The work is about to start 💪🏾💪🏾
I almost was saying out loud...Try to back it out! Then you did. Great video! !:- )
Great tips ,Thanks!
Thank you for this video, I have never seen one.
You saved my day. Great content
Once again you saved the day!! Thank you for videos!!
My pleasure
Looks like a lot of work. I like the idea about a smart lock.
Good video , thanks for sharing , God bless !
Job well done. Thanks
Keep up the good work Leah. I am an old timer Carpenter and enjoy your videos.
Thanks, will do!
Thank you so much. Finally, I found someone with my type of deadbolt. :)
Some deadbolts have set screws that are hidden . They wont have an inside cover plate, instead if you remove the side plate that covers the bolt, and look down the bolt shaft. Where the bolt meets the lock housing, you may see an inner and an outer set screw. Usually allen keys will operate these set screws.
Thank you Leah🙂
Saved me - thanks!
You can also use a reverse (aka left hand) drill bit, I've used this method on removing stripped fasteners. This will also prevent the drill bit from tightening the screw more as you drill into it.
You're right....couldn't find my set
I’m sure that security screw is there to stop people who know about the cap trick from disassembling the lock
My exact thought.
The cap on the screw access side of the lock is on the interior of the house. No point thwarting removal if a person is doing so from inside the house.
@@libbyd1001then what’s the point of a double sided lock? It’s to keep people in as well.
I just had to remove & replace 3 of these with normal switch locks.
I saw Jane save my a$$ tonight. Desd bolt was stuck in the locked position, kwikset smart key failed on inside key. Thanks to this video I was able to swap the outside with the inside. Temporary fix for the overnight hours.
Thank you, this really helped.
Thanks Leah!
You are so super cool. Another great video.👍
Leah I miss seeing your videos. Put more up I always enjoy. Jim
I post once and twice a week.
Thank you again!
Wow Jean I am 72 and never saw a deadbolt like that but if I ever do I am now prepared thank you for this video it was awesome
Neat trick on the security screw! Wish I'd thought of that when I needed it 😄
Thank you so much. WHY is was under the faceplace facing OUTSIDE I will never know, but now I can change this blasted thing out for new.
Great information
Very well demonstrated 👍👍👍👍🇬🇧Manchester England 🇬🇧
Very helpful!
You can get reverse twist drill bits specifically to unscrew fasteners which may back out while drilling into them.
My nails look just like hers😂 Hard working women❤Thanks for the tips!!
Thank you foe saving me so much time.
The fancy deadbolt in the open has a serious flaw. Fill the "weep hole" on the bottom of the outside cover with some JB Weld. See Lock Picking Lawyers recent video. Can't wait for the demo to begin
I watch the lock picking lawyer too
Thank you! You saved us!
for this sort of situation probably worth while having or getting a cheap bolt/screw removing kit(speedout/other); can be had for as low as 7-10$ here in Canada:P would work a charm on that security screw
Thank. You it helped a lot
Thanks Leah
Wow I never knew about that removable face plate, Thank you!
Awesomeness! 🏆👍
Love the education I get here.
Excellent ❤
All my entry door knobs have recently failed by the knob not activating the plunger. Locked in!! 😮
I don't remember door knobs and faucets being such problems in my Dad's homeowner adventures.
Thank you.
Great key lock very secure
lv your videos
I noticed that the deadbolt you replaced was a Kwikset Smart Key lock. Did you consider taking advantage of that lock's toolless rekeying capability? You can buy a Kwikset Smart Key rekeying set for less than $20 and rekey it in place. That saves a lot of time and expense.
No, I wanted to go with something else
This helped me
Thank you!
My pleasure
Thank you for this video.
Btw I have not seen you or your new video for quite some time. How are you lately?
Ok I have something similar but mine is more antique looking. I tried to remove the front as this video shows and scared the front.
Turns out my back had a teeny tiny hole at the bottom to pop the bottom plate.
This video made me look at the other side and after removing the rear face plate I got it off.
Now my 85 yo mother thinks I’m a geniuse cause her lock was messed up for 20 years 😂 it just had to be tightened!
Thanks😊
The security screw is there because some tenants love to change out the deadbolt so the landlord can't come in ever and see they are subleasing or some other violation of the lease.
With that lock, as long as you have a key that works, you can re-key it in 3 seconds. Just google kwikset re key.
Yet the landlord would be not allowed to visit his property without your consent& presence due personal property presence inside his house property according to the rent contract...
@@ScarryMarian2012 In most states the landlord can enter the property with out the tenants presence for an emergency (water leak type stuff) or with 24 hours notice.
@@blueferral3414 and that would be the only legal reasons to do so,but whoever rented CAN replace the original locks for privacy reasons,if the landlord/landlady will sign the contract where the locks replacement is mentioned, otherwise no contract (and personally,no further contact aswell),once, the landlord came into the flat where our daughter was sudying alone in her room...apparently to read the watwr meteres (without out consent),replaced the locks immediatelly and filed a report to police and moved out 3 months later, before the definitive leavr,i also replaced my locks with the landlord's original locks after he paid me the warranty money then handed the keys...warrant violations by the landlord made him very susceptible to his other rentals and he had to sell that flat to pay the court for 3 sues (including mine) so...whatevere is not respected, will bring also consequences !
@@ScarryMarian2012 Now that we have been down a rabbit hole that has nothing to do with my comment. Have a nice day.
Thank you, ma'am
Omg. Thank you.
Love the video, Leah!
I was wondering, would you have been able to use a flathead screwdriver on the security screw, or am I missing something?
No it wouldn't have worked
You're amazing
goes for me also , never ran into a dead bolt like that but now i know what to do if i do
Harbor Freight carries an inexpensive set of security bits. I got one for a couple bucks a few years ago.
Thanks
you can remove those security screws with a good pair of flat pliers and a little bit of patience.
Wow, front door made out of styrofoam? Holy crap. Not just unsafe for fire, but also not protecting you from unauthorized entry! Double whammy. This kind of stuff is what comes to mind when people in europe talk about american house building... Great video none the less!
It's not a front door
@@seejanedrill ahhhh! see in Europe locks like that are very uncommon except on outside facing doors!
Thank You, "Jane"!!! - Your "Pro Tips & Tricks"- Mean A LOT !!! - To all of us "Broke Hillbillies"!!! - We LOVE YOU !!!
You are so welcome!
Thanks, while our lock wasn't quite like this . . . it did allow us to see the "innards" so I knew my options. Previous owner of house had used some sort of glue where there was supposed to be a set screw . . . and we couldn't get it disassembled the "right" way . . . so we just drilled that plate so we could get to the screws underneath. There's more than one way to skin a cat!
Try a "fit any size of nut socket" to undo that security screw
I would have cut a slot on the head of the atypical screw head with a dremel then used a slot screw driver to remove
Nice...
U the best
I have a loose Abloy dead bolt and there is no screws to tighten up the key housing. I wonder if it's face plate will pop off as well?!
Let me know
For a Kwikset all you need is a wave rake and a turning tool.
Hmmmmm
The Weiser deadbolt I have looks the same but there’s no faceplate to remove.
Locks annoy me. I spent 1 week learning to pick locks and anything under $100 is less than a minute to pick. So just make sure it is obvious your house is harder to get into than your neighbors. Then just have good insurance.
Rottweilers work great.
Locks were made for honest people.
@@louislandi938
Exactly.
Thieves annoy me - so i don't worry about locks.
@sounduser Under $100 there are hundreds of options, and they all suck. Way to easy to pick. Most of them you can rake the pins and it will open.
