    One thing to take a look at with the Allison pulling when “stopped” is their RELS system with the FuelSense setup. It will put the transmission in a partial neutral as long as the brake is applied and then once you release the brake it goes back into driving gear. That may be a setting they can turn on for you.

  • @JB-gw7mv

    The true difference between the 2 is the Eaton has an actual manual transmission that clutches and shifts by itself depending on RPM and road speed, the Allison is a true automatic transmission like in your car or suv. Great video by the way, very informative! 👍

    Good job explaining the difference of the 2 transmissions from an owner and drivers point of view. You are right about the 8LL trans. It’s fine off-road or on a site truck but the wide gaps in ratios suck for highway driving. I never understood why some many dump trucks run them. 18 sp is the most versatile.

    Regarding the allison that wants to keep driving at idle...the fix to that problem is to lower your engine idle rpm...down to about 600 is what we found seems to work the best...looks like it was idling at 700 in the video...give that a try you will be much happier

    The hot thing in Tri-Axles up here in Upstate NY is the Allison 4700 RDS, which has 7-speeds and supposedly a deep reverse, where you actually have to give it throttle to go in reverse.

    There are other options for oil. As long as you use an allison approved oil the warranty will be fine. They have a list of approved oils from other manufacturers on there site. We run fleetrite brand in ours. It's a little cheaper than the trans snyd and won't void the warranty.

    great video, information and opinion is bang on. allison are great but youre exactly right they need to be 8 speed and less expensive and the service cost is too high. 13, 15, or 18 speed manual i still dont think can be beat, just way more simple, proven, less headache and theres no programming them.... as long as you have a competent driver youre set.

  • @TheGleanerl2
    @TheGleanerl2 5 лет назад +4

    I don't understand why they haven't put power shift transmissions in big trucks like they have in tractors. Obviously they can handle the torque same with an ivt transmission. You'd also still have a clutch pedal like we do in big tractors. And you could have a shifting lever with a power shifter just like the tractors have. The way some have described the Easton ultrashift it sounds like a power shift

    nice vid. the allison does have a neutral. you have to shift it into neutral. otherwise the clutches will want to grab when in gear. they are way more aggro than those of a car so the pull is strong yes. if they come up with 8 or 9 gear model, i bet you these will be the new hotness for OTR

    Well, ya gotta compare apples to apples. The Eaton is basically an automated Roadranger. The equivalent in Allison would be the TC10 (available in 18 speed), which they generally don't stuff into a dump truck. You probably have a 4000 series WT. That being said, we run Transynd in all of our Allisons (WT1000, 2000, 3000) and see zero issues, and our service intervals are at about 160,000km (filter and fluid change).

    • @chiefkeyes5359
      @chiefkeyes5359 5 лет назад

      Indeed, Allison TC10 would definitely outperform and eaton imo and it's definitely more comparable to the 18 speed automated

    I have an Allison AT545 in my '92 4700. When I stop at traffic lights she wants to go too. All the loose plastic inside the truck rattles. I only have 4 speeds, no overdrive, and I get around 9 mpg in a 24k GVW truck. Being the last generation, or possibly two generations ago my truck likes to be around 2200 rpm. I can't believe you were doing 70 mph at 1500 rpm. That's crazy!
    My truck is underpowered with a DT360 but it gets the job done every day with few breakdowns compared to a k3500 or F350 cab and chassis. Big hills take me down to 15-20 mph fully loaded but she makes it EVERY time with no complaints.
    I've never driven a heavy truck like yours and that Eaton sounds interesting. My truck is up to 265k and the Allison has never given a hassle, besides a leak where the shifter cable goes into the transmission. I love the fact that driving my medium-duty truck is like driving a car even if she is a bit of a dog. I couldn't imagine dealing with shifting all day. That would suck. It might be fun for an hour or two but not all day.
    The Allison I have is built like a tank, like my I4700 truck, and is very faithful. I'd have a hard time jumping ship on Allison because they're idiotproof. Simpler is better in my book.
    I get so much of what you're saying about the Eaton, especially watching how many speeds you have available and that option for when the truck is loaded or light. That's going to save money and make the ride more comfortable/fun.
    It would be a hoot to drive either of those trucks for an hour or two. That's about as heavy-duty as you can get with cold ac and a quiet comfortable cab. I hope your drivers appreciate how nice they have it.

    Great video! I almost got the Allison when I ordered my Pete 7 axle. But the upfront cost and repair cost compared to Eaton Autoshift (Was the only Eaton automated manual at the time) Vs 18 speed manual made my choice easy. From watching your video the Eaton Ultrashift is so far advanced of the Eaton Autoshift it is without a doubt much better transmission. Good Luck and Keep On Truckin

How soon did the tech get to you after you called? How much is the clutch replacement? You also didn't talk about how each tranny handles starting on a grade.

      Or better yet, a 13 or 18. IMO automatics have no business being in a big truck. If you can't drive a manual, you don't belong behind the wheel and are nothing but a steering wheel holder, not a driver. Unless you've been driving a manual all your life and lost a limb and can no longer drive one, then an auto would be ok for that reason. The Allison sucks, I don't care what anyone says. My truck has been in the shop to get my tarp fixed and I've had the displeasure of driving one for 2 days and can't stand it .... what a major POS trans it is .... constantly shifts up/down when not needed and no way to stop it.

    Definitely like how the shifter is in the 1st truck versus the 2nd. I think it's much nicer on the right side of the steering column instead of in the console. Allison might wanna consider this.

    With the eaton once the truck senses any pressure in the brake line it throws it in neutral or down shifts, it also has a clutch unlike the Allison which is like an automatic in your car with a torque converter and your right, it's never in neutral unless you press n.

    Justin, I have been in the construction trucking industry for over 30 yrs now, I have a question. Why is it that all your new trucks are not spec"d the same? Such as Transmissions, engines, diff's, gearing, and the list goes on. Just wondering is all. thanks for the video's your a real kick in the pants!!

    But the Allison not having a true Neutral really helps the jake brakes and allow the truck to come to complete stop a lot quicker a neutral would automatically disengage The jake brake And increase breaking distance which is always a big big negative

      Allison is the only true automatic transmission (Torque Converter) just until now because ZF Transmissions will bring their Powerline 8 automatic transmission to the market soon.
      All the automated-manuals are just your typical multi-gear manual transmissions just now controlled by computers, electronics and solenoids...

      @B we have a mack granite triaxle with the allison. We used it for plowing, normal dump operations, paving/milling as well as pulling a tag trailer with our dozer or excavators and it worked perfectly. We didn't pull the weight you put in, but was 80k. It always worked flawlessly. Only problem we ever had was a cooler line ruptured.
