    I think the reason they are so popular is they are a good mix (function/use) between the aluminum sand ladders and the Fiberglass waffle boards/ditch ramps. They are quite a bit lighter than both options as well. The downside vs the waffle boards is the traction boards are not rigid like the waffle boards so do not bridge as well...but they also wont wedge open your fender like the ridged ramps could if they slip. I think the other reason is people like bolting stuff on the side of their vehicles too.

    Nice tracks, but boards you showed are expensive at more than $250. It makes more sense to buy a cheap $60 board and after a time replace all the traction points with a bolt.

    Another good video. Adding functional tools to your kit is always a good idea. Having options on the trail is great in recovery situations.

    I have 12" x 48" sections of 1" square composite chemical factory decking. They're grit on one side, and strong enough to use for bridging applications. Mostly used for sand, but also used in the snow.
    You really need to take your time when you use traction aids in the snow. Move a little forward if you slip, hold up, then preposition the loose traction aid. Lots of times you're inching your way out one "traction aid length" at a time. I cant' stress enough that you need to take it slow, and not try to "gun it....because I was almost there!!!". Especially on ice, the traction aid can fly out, and hurt someone, or damage your vehicle.

    Australian export - arb, tred, maxtrax - what amazes me is that off road gear costs as much or more in the US! Everything else is cheaper than in Australia incl. vehicles.

    Ive used 2+6 with sheet metal screws for traction. Works and a little bit cheaper.

    Hell yea they're worth it, especially if you actually need them. Nice to see somebody off roading without being a total douche and powering through everything.

      The cheaper boards may work in a pinch, but over continued use they don't seem to hold up as well.

    I have a set of Go Treads. I haven't used them that much, but the times I have they worked great (mostly used in sand). Also they're only $60 per board with a lifetime guarantee.
    And next time you go out with that Dodge, tell him to air down! Lol

      Lol that Dodge was me! I did air down, but couldn't go as low as I wanted because I have so little ground clearance...

      3 years back when we started overlanding as a large group I had a set of maxtrax and the four other sets were off brand. We snapped all 4 of the off brand boards in half or down the middle. The other issue was the grip. The grip on the off brand boards are nowhere near as good. Truck tires will spin out on those really easily. What makes them last is what they are made of. I don't have a clue what kind of plastics and chemicals it takes to make these boards so flex and twist without cracking or breaking. We have used maxtrax in about every condition possible. If you look at recovery boards and don't want to spend the money for maxtrax then my suggestion is don't buy them. You could see in his video those off brands are a waste of money. Down the road, when you see someone has maxtrax you should try them out and you will see them work for yourself. Those cheap brands are just junk. Especially in the sand. They will split apart in no time and begin cracking.

      @@tomthorn2887 I may not have the same experience as you with MaxTrax, but thought the TREDS held up quite well. The gripped well and have held up to wheel another day. I agree that many brands are junk but TREDS also have a warranty where they send you new ones should anything happen. I'm not sponsored in any way, like I said, I bought them myself, but I do think they are a worthy competitor.

    Just now seeing this video the guy where he screwed up was it he put one board in the back and one in the front it is best to put two in the back or two in the front hopefully he doesn’t make the same mistake again I however have two pairs for the front and the rear just fine

    I have been a long time user of maxtrax. I have seen the off brands time and time again crack, split, slip and not bite down at all. To me they are not worth the money. If you feel a set of maxtrax are too expensive for you right now......then I suggest skip them all together. Look at some other forms of recovery gear. Don't waste your money on boards that are useless. We destroyed 4 sets of the cheap versions in no time and when we got back they ordered a set of maxtrax to replace them. There is a video I suggest everybody watch before buying anything. maxtrax 10 ways to use maxtrax 4x4 tips.

    • @franksmith8210
      @franksmith8210 5 лет назад

      Pine branches don’t work nearly as well, I’ve always used an axe and chainsaw to get branches to get unstuck. When is started using the boards it was a game changer. First off it takes only a minute to try them out unlike cutting and hauling branches, and second the place these really shine are in the soft sand. When you’re on the beach you have no recovery options, when we were young we would dig a hole and drop our spare tire in as an anchor, then winch to it and bury it to pull our selves out. That was a long process that took a lot of work. No reason to not use a crutch when you can. That would be like saying don’t drive your rig in to the mountains because it’s a crutch and you should just hike in.

    Not sure why people put their vehicles through this, I’m all about adventure, had a few off-road vehicles, just can’t see torturing the vehicles, and banging them all up.
