Field Testing Traction Devices

- Vidja vidja vidja! Brandon Currin / Currin 1776 and Survival Steve are field testing a variety of traction devices today. Super handy to have if off- roading, traveling in snow ,or in a bug out situation where you may be using secondary roads. Also handy to have if you happen to live in Southeast Georgia where it’s rained 47 feet over the last month!
And yes, we let Steve drive.......
May sound nuts, and it does make a mess, but in a pinch, the front floor mats on many vehicles will help out. Especially in snow where all you need is some kind of traction. I put an industrial carpet piece in the back of an SUV to give a little more "finish" look. One day, that SUV was off the road and in a wet slush such that the highway tread tires could not climb back up. The carpet piece did just the trick. Best of all, it cost about $10 to replace with a brand new one when my wife decided the one we used was looking a bit ratty.
Whats worked for me every single time for over 20 years is rubber anti fatigue mates. Ones with the holes in em. Always keep 2 in the bed of the truck.
You mean like the thing on the floor at restaurant dishwasher ?
@@amyfreeze9772 . YEP .
These would be great.
I saw a guy use about 5-10 feet of cordage to tie the traction devices to the bumper. The objective is to continue driving until you get to safe spot all while dragging the traction devices along so you don't have to walk a long way to retrieve them.
THAT IS A GREAT Tip
Best comment! Never thought about that.
The rope alone will help you find it sometimes. So use a bright color. They tend to buried after driving over them. Not just in sand.
This is how we use old skool aluminum ones in Africa. Most have a hole for the rope on the end
What about the front wheels? Wouldn't the rear tires tear them off by driving over them and the rope? I'm not picturing it correctly
I havent had to use mine. Must be because I'm just so good. Then again, the Mall doesn't have many dirt roads 🤷♂️
ok
The best thing is a 4-5 foot trailer ramp rated for vehicles. Jack up the wheel enough, slide it in like a Friday night, and that’s it. Plus you can use to get out of roxkstuff and huge ruts.
Plastic is the most slippery thing available
One time I got stuck on some ice, on a hill, and about 2 inches from my neighbors car. I put my floor mats under my tires and it worked. Not sure if it would work again but might be cheaper and easier to store than all of those pieces of plastic. I have a 04 Tacoma.
I've done the floor matts several times too.
In Australia people who don't drive with recovery gear off-road are greatly hated
_ GT-R I can see how getting yourself stuck, knowing you’re going off road and not being prepared, would piss people off. Yeah. Especially if you’re out in the middle of nowhere. Australia looks like a good place to get stuck to me tho.
thanks for testing these helps alot on deciding which to put in my jeep
One way of getting unstuck is the same way farmers can use to get farm equipment from out of the mud. Keep a small length of 2 by 4 in your car. Use a ratchet tie and ratchet the 2 by 4 to a tire. The 2 by 4 will give you the best friction to get unstuck. Just move forward very very slowly until you can get into a good area that will allow your tires a better grip. Might even be a good way of getting out of a ditch on the side of the road. Put on all of your driving tires and drive very slowly in a straight line. Kind of like putting tank tracks on your car when needed. That’s what really helps give regular tires more traction (the width of the tires). If you don’t have any 2 by 4 just use some rope and tie a branch to the tire. The survival expert Creek Stewart’s Grandfather Would do this to his farm tractors, stuck in the field. Tie anything like a 2 x 4 or branch to drive wheels. That’s why you really get your traction, the width of what connects to the ground.
should also try the test with getting the traction devices wet. majority of stuck situations come from mud or snow
Great job guys
Thanks that was fun to watch.
would have been great to put a link in description to each product!!!
Right ? 🤣
This generation is the give no credit
Generation
@@D_Cali_Life you cant say this generation when they’re clearly not from this generation 😂
Yeah, or at least name them. What use is a review that we have no idea what they are?
those dues are not "this generation". They're 2 and 3 generations behind today's young'ns. They're just not as good at youtube as y'all professional commenters ;) @@D_Cali_Life
I dont know about the solid plastic things, but the rolly things look like they may be perfect for hitting a hard pack of snow.
Ronnie Dahl from Australia has a 4x4 channel and has done a extensive test on these and the mattracks or maxtracks won hands down for durability and everything else
Cool video, thanks - made myself some from 2x6 wood and used 1/4" hex head heating screws for traction (ice racers use these for DIY studded tires on dirt bikes) - they protrude 4/32" - haven't tested yet though - your test shows the importance of a wedge shape and traction at the ends
I usualy have my passenger lay down belly up.. i just slowly climb over him...
Great content!! Would love to see how long each one lasts if you spin on them (in my experience they tend to start melting pretty quickly). Most people aren't light on the throttle when they're trying to get out of a hole ;)
Nice vidya. I like the roll up ones to keep in the wife's Corolla.
You folks are kewl as heck
Absolutely loved the video
Cheers mate.
Seems the orange board works the best.
Wish I woulda had these last night. Buried front and rear axle in river mud. I thought it would take an act of God to get me out. That act turned out to be my buddy with a 5.9 Cummins
Damn!!! I needed those a month ago! Twice! Got ran off the road and my snowmachine trailer tires sucked me off the road, into some deep snow, was suck for two hours
Glad I watched this before I bought.
Would be nice to know what the names of each are or links to where to buy.
Max tracks they said it a few times
@@jamiehume5642 no maxtrax were not available, rewatch
Sure is look on Google you can find them it's not that hard
@@Kennyjr-rr8rm right lol
GOOGLE SEARCH is where you can find them
def worth watching, that ending is funny.
hey boss, what’s the exact name of the orange traction pad? i’ll try to buy it online. thanks for this review. at least now i know which one works
HorseWinch DRAGON 2
The fact that any company thinks we're going to use these as a shovel instead of using a shovel is real funny to me.
Looks like they are having fun in the sun.
So, to your question about the extra treads on the sides. You can turn those sideways as well and they're just like the shorties.
I used 2x8. Worked well and cheap
5:20 THESE seemed the best to me !
I really would like to have seen those smaller ones in use on the full-size truck for comparison.
Tyre pressure! Drop it in the sand by 40% Max trax are huge in Aus but I prefer the rubber tipped so you don't do a burnout on the Max trax. And a winch and winch extension
Hell yeah😊👍
Pro tip: chains also work on sand and mud, even rocks! unless you’re in Moab and there’s ONLY rock, in which case you probably don’t need the chains. But if you’re climbing a loose rutted out hill with some rocks in it those chains will still do you some good.
Other than that tires and suspension are the best “traction devices” money can buy.
i have tried this and it does work great got me out no problem with the old street tires i had but when the chain looped around the tire for some reason it broke my plastic inner finder on my yj lol so don't full send it like i did
@@NERFDUDE-gp3lq or if you do full send it at least make sure your chains are secure lololol
@@redrider7730 thanks for literally ignoring my whole point so you can argue with me about where snow falls.
“These, those, this guy” what are the names???
Bro does not mention any names at all hau lol
This one is way way better than that one. And its better than that one too.
Sweet so we getting the orange aggressive ones. Can't wait to get them. I knew you guys would step up. Hey be careful with those open hand wounds with Corona floating around. Good to see your all doing good. Stay safe.
I hope this is is a Hint to some MaxTrax in a box! I know a guy who had some of the cheaper ones and regretted it the first time he got stuck in some snow. The 2nd year he had MaxTrax and said well worth the money.
Great content
The roll up rubber ones didn't work very good. It doesn't matter how portable they are if you have to have 3 or 4 sets in order to make them work halfway decent. Looked like the max ones worked best.
Don’t ya just love being out with your buds doing the hard work and you hear that giggle behind you? 😂 Great vid! If y’all find out the brands can you update us?
Awesome video, actually pretty funny to watch and learn about the products. Great work !
Warn makes one hell of a puller outer. But I'd say them red uns is the best.
try them in winter lol great video
I used hockey shin pads to get out of snow in a front wheel drive car once. Launched one of the shin pads into the woods and never found it. Drove away no issue though.
Where did you get the rollup traction board? Could you share a link ? Great video guys, thanks for taking the time to test these tractions boards and take the time to video and edit...
VR, David from El Dorado Hills, CA
You should try gotreads they work really well and you can fold them
I always used the car floor mats personally.
Nice video
Thanks
I like the "surf board with teeth". What brand are they?
Great video, but would love to get manufactures names of those boards.
Yeah how the heck are you doing a gear review and you're not even telling the name of the products?
What's the point of doing a video like this if you're not going to say the names of the product?
Ugh I really need the orange ones. What are they?!
nice video guys
PLEASE do another video when you can get the real deal max trax. I think they will be better than most other like it. Espicially when using them as a bridge!
Who buys a 2wd 4 wheeler lol. Good video tho 👍
I have the traction traxxs but luckily have not had to use them yet but hopefully we get a good winter! Snow
What’s the name of the Orange ones that look like a surfboard?
Pity that you didn't have max tracks. They are the best and strongest recovery boards by far.
Whats up Internet??? Oh im subd ! Lol
Need to give it a bit more happy juice to see which ones burn the spikes off.
Does anyone know what brand the orange ones are? They say HEBE on the end. I've done a lot of Google hunting and I can't find them. They are definitely not Maxtrax. The ones in the video have a rounded edge.
Looks like these. Maxsa 20334 Orange Connectable Escaper Buddy Traction
very cool!
If the roll up one just had more aggressive nubs it would make a huge difference.
Well said. The roll up ones will be no good in the mud. Even here in this video, they are not good either.
@@sarath89892318 ya but for some odd reason they only had the 1 lol
Do you air down your tire for and that's how Matt's recovery dose it.
16:06 the closest to viewer treads on tire looks like should be directed into opposite way, don't you think? It should not left front but rear right, isn't?
Mud would be a much better test. A winch with 100' cable is best!
06:06 - 07:06
Does anyone know the name of these mats? I can't seem to find them anywhere.
What brand were the little orange ones!
Can you please ad the link from where you bought the long orange ones? Thanks
Back in the day we discovered using a door mat by accident
They work better if you tap them in with a rubber mallet.
why did you not lower your tire psi?
why no locking diff?
why not in four wheel mode. with the front diff locked up so ALL four tires get power?
the tires i run i stay out of sand. but it takes a lot to stop my cj-7. 35 in by 12.5 wide. drop down to 4 or 5 psi.
Seems as though the rubber roll-up ones would work better for snow & ice than the hard plastic ones.
On snow yes - helped me a few times. On ice they slip. They work also on mud for smaller cars - I helped a few neighbours (there was no need to pull them out with my car).
@@henrykg what are the roll up ones called? Link?
@@GPMAX01 Here they are called "recovery traction tracks"
Hey currin 1776 that rubber track that you have you should design it to where it goes around a tire like a set of chains that would be the ultimate setup
Will you guy's do a unboxing for the BattlBox black box when they are released.?
I'm confused on why you started filming where it wouldn't grab, cut scene and then start again and it goes on, looked more like the 4wd pulled it up onto the first set to me.
How would these work for traction of your truck is high centered in hard packed snow?
Heck, after going through all the effort of digging the tires out, you could probably just drive the truck out on it's own without the traction devices. By the way, each of those devices specifically say not to spin the tires while using them. You're supposed to go slow, give the tires time to grip, and ease yourself out.
🙃
i wonder which lasts better being in back of the truck in the sun all the time?
I’ve never use those in sand, tried them in snow, tried them in mud, didn’t work! Spent your money on an air pump so you can air down. That’s my two. Cents.
the roll up one might work on ice,
Put these in the box!
Large orange ones 👍🏻
Will some of these be in the next box?
Thats cool
Seriously who gets stuck on a qaud. We always just picked up the back end and set it over.
What is the name of the orange one?
Would have been nice if you could have told us the brand names like other reviews have
what about a standard car with much smaller wheels ? i have 14 inch rims/wheels. I also don't have 4x4 or a limited slip differential :'(
i need a thinner and shorter one ? any reccomendations ?>
Why didn't you use the roll up ones on each side? Made them look like they barely worked compared to the others.
Can you please start to post your boxes to the UK I really like you're cannal but I live in the UK so I can't get your stuff
I found the orange ones on amazon. Maxsa 20334 $139.99
You could probably use a carabiners to link a couple of the roll up's
They definitely need to add 2 instead of 1 on the compact one
Plastic is slipperier than snot. Get a metal one like a fire escape step type configuration.
I bet you could tie that rubber track on to the tire.
Excellent idea
Some links would be nice, please.
What are the orange ones?
These guys look like Ron Swanson's brothers.
