Hey Scotty, what do you think about Toyota buying Nissan? Will Toyota go downhill because they bought Nissan? Or will Nissan get better because of Toyota ownership?
If you have a transmission that is a little soft, just take you're foot off the gas just before each shift and let it shift. It will last alot longer that way because you aren't wearing the clutches every time it shifts. The faster the clutches lock up positively the less wear there will be.
That's what I do in my 06 pilot to prevent the revs from going really high. I try to get it to shift around 2k rpm. What transmission fluid do you use? Some say valvoline max life is preferred over honda dw1.
If the transmission is starting to act up, I'd change the transmission fluid. There's many videos on how to it. The first I did to my Honda V6 was, install a S - VCM controller. There is a lot of positive reviews on it.
May your holiday season bring many blessings to you and your family this holiday season and far beyond. Thanks for all that you do especially for these young people.
I’ve had to replace the in-tank fuel pump, EGR valve and PVC valve in my Tahoe. Which is 24 years old. That’s it. That’s all. In 24 years. No company makes vehicles like they should anymore.
I just paid my Mazda3 off and plan to drive it to 200,000 miles and then buy another. I have gotten 44 mpg on the highway...best between 60 and 65. Wish I had found Mazda earlier in my car buying life
@@tamesiagarner1489 Might as well drive it to 300,000 miles, these days that's nothing! Especially if you keep the oil changed properly🤷♂️. Most of my vehicles have almost 400,000 miles on them.🤷♂️
I have a 2005 Pilot Ex with original Engine and alternator. I am the first owner, maintain all my fluids with 117k miles. Transmission shifts perfectly no problem.
I love my 21 CX-5 so much that I bought a 23 CX-9 as well. Far quieter and better riding than the RAV4 and CR-V. I’m a lifelong Toyota owner but I gotta say Mazda is as bulletproof and higher quality than comparable Toyota offerings.
I tried to love Mazada, but the ride is far inferior to both Hondas and Toyota's. I just test drove 2 last week. They almost seemed confused about whether they want be a luxury car or sports car.
Good thing it's not a Mazda 6 then, LOL. "Higher quality" has many meanings. Not to mention Mazda has a long way to go to match quality of the other 2.
My 2001 Accord had trans problems at 85K miles! Had it rebuilt by a great mechanic. Got rid of it at 145K when the timing belt was due for 2nd time. My 1999 BMW on original trans at 165K miles, take that Honda!
I have a 2013 honda pilot 4x4 with 243,000 miles never changed anything except batteries, transmission fluid ,and oil, and coolant and brakes , so only maintenance
I’m a proud new owner of a Mazda CX-50 Hybrid. Toyota hybrid powertrain in a CX-50 body built at the Alabama Toyota-Mazda joint plant. I traded up my 2015 Corolla. Original owner I put 180k miles on her and never saw a single issue. I probably could have gone another 100k+ miles but it was time for something new
Had an '07 Pilot AWD and was very happy with it until the cat's failed. To change the cats requires that the front end assembly be dropped, which was way beyond my pay grade. I also could not find any independent mechanic to do the job and I refused to go to the dealer. Donated it to Cars for Cancer.
My family and I really loved our 2004 Honda Pilot! I bought it used at 84,000 mi. The previous owner always had the back seats folded down so when I raised them back up they looked to be in brand new condition. Their headrests were still in their original plastic wrapping in the back storage compartment! Original transmission started to act up a little at 160,000, but a transmission fluid drain and refill seemed to solve that issue for awhile. But the transmission (and engine as well) eventually gave out at 235,000 mi and so I sadly had to junk it. I think I got very lucky with this car, since I have heard horror stories of other Pilots and Odysseys losing their transmissions much earlier. Not sure I would ever gamble buying another Pilot. Moved on to Toyotas and am very happy.
Still wouldnt trade my 9th gen corolla. Reliable, good looking and a easy car to mod overall. I still think the 1zz vvti engines are the most reliable from most of these cars you even mentioned.
HR-V 2005 here in Norway. Just passed the equivalent of MOT with 155000 kms. No issues, just regular maintenance. A couple bushings in the suspension since I bought it 3 years ago. And btw, I paid less than 2000 US dollars for it. Cheers😊
I just purchased a 2023 mazda3 HB. Hopefully I have no issues with it. I don't know much about mazdas, I'm switching over to a 2015 camry that gave me no issues at all. So pray for me!
Most hondas with cvt trans will have issues around 100k miles, their new 9-10 speeds are jerky and eating themselves on some models. Also their 1.5t engines 2021 up are blowing head gaskets like old Subarus. Also the paint bubbles and chips early on some of their colors.
With the Honda pilot, just change the ATF 3 times with AMSOIL or better after market ATF. it will shift like butter. DW-1 OEM isnt the best contrary to what people believe
My Acura lasted 20 years, the first 15 without rust. The Honda paintjob started failing at 11 years (white flakes of clearcoat disease). Once the Honda anti-rust elves died, the car started going downhill fast. You really don't want to drive a unitbody car once it starts rusting if you can help it, from a structural safety perspective.
I wish I COULD find a mechanic like you around here.... DID find one- and he's quitting this year... good mechanics that are TRUSTWORTHY are very hard to find lately.. especially up here in the hills :)
It's unlikely due to the corollas 9th generation reliable motor. They can have 500K miles and won't need any maintenance other than fluids and it's oil change. I've heard more issues on a Mazda 3 than a 2003-2005 Corolla.
Never knew you could turn off 2 cylinders in some Honda 6 cylinder engines... those Honda Pilots are nice. Stay away from 2009 bc transmission issues, 2010+ fixed it.
I never going to buy Honda again I had bad experience with it. I had a Honda Element was something to fix my Honda Accord transmission problem. I have a 4Runner and I love it and my mechanic hates it 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Sorry Scotty but anything newer is a gamble unless you can get it dirt cheap and can fix it up yourself. If you have to pay a garage a minimum of $160 per hour with their marked up parts forget it. Some people nowadays are lucky to be able to put fuel in their vehicle not to mention those ever so tuff oil and filter changes.
Looking for suv for my mother really want her to get the 2018 Toyota Rav 4 but man they want so much for them was thinking about the Mazda CX-5 cheaper but I hope it’s more reliable than the Rav 4
My wife's 2011 Honda Pilot is at 241,000 miles, it's showing its age, but still runs great. So far have done the timing belt maintenance twice, 1 alternator, 1 power steering pump, multiple brakes, multiple tires, and 2 sets of shocks. Basically wear and tear items. I think one of the o2 sensors might be going, we get a random code for either the cat or sensor, but the dealer changed the cat last year, which i think the misdiagnosed. When it's warmer I'll change the sensor, it still drives good, so not worried.
I drove Mazda's from 1973 (RX3), all the way to a 2013 CX5 which was good, but underpowered for the highway. Migrated to used 2016 Lexus RX350 with the 3.5L 6. Couldn't be happier. Going on 4 years of owning it and only done oil changes every 5,000KM plus new tires and wiper blades. That's it. Thought about moving to a new tech 2.5L turbo, but am seriously rethinking that.
My '99 Odyssey "van" had transmission problems, too. They used the V6/trans combo from the Accord in those things. Worked fine in that 4 door sedan. But, slapping a big old van body, 3 rows of seats, power sliding doors on both sides? Yeah. Too heavy. What'd they do? Recall. So, I went through 4 trans rebuilds in 200k miles on that thing. So glad be rid of it. 👍
when I got in my dad's 2017 Forester on a cold day I looked and looked for a temp gage and discovered all it has was a little thermometer image in the instrument cluster. Blue is cold, red is warm WTH
Hey scotty. Can you please give us an explanation why gasoline/steam hybrids aren’t an option. It seems to me like all the heat energy that gets wasted could be used to create steam for an extra boost to the downstroke of the piston maybe with a tappit valve. Making a 4 cylinder produce same power as a v8.
Thanks for time, what would be a better car to buy, 2015 manual transmission Sentra or 2015 manual transmission Ford Focus in CA with about 120 k miles for around 4k, thanks
Hello Scotty!!! I enjoy your honesty and have learned to trust your opinions! Could you do a run down on that new Land Rover Defender 90 2 door? It seems a little more affordable but is it worth it?
It would be cool to build the crappiest new car ever with you. To put every crappy modern feature and trim package into one car. Like a half ton pickup with a turbo 3 cylinder with one of those cvt transmissions and all the other crap. And the 27 function electronic tailgate ergonomic happiness system.
@@ricardocruzjr581 What a silly comment. If you have money to spare, then reliability may not mean much to you. But if you're a regular person, reliability is far more important than anything else.
@@alibabaschultz352 I'm sure he wasn't saying reliability doesn't mean much to him. He was saying he prefers Mazda despite Rav being more reliable and he justifies that because of the better way it drives. hehe. Gotta read between the lines.
@@brandontaylor2932 And I am saying that that is a privileged perspective. Most people literally cant afford to not care about reliability first and foremost.
@@alibabaschultz352 Who cares. The guy responded to the OP about drivability. Takeaway is that the CX-5 has better drivability than the RAV 4. Idk if its true but at least here i see 2 people say it is. And a third raving about privilege and lacking a respect for the transfer of ideas/knowledge..
I'm looking at 2020 Mazda CX-5s to purchase with 55,000 miles, but I am seeing transmission issue posts, they have cylinder deactivation, and SKYACTIV-DRIVE FW6A-EL AT with “ATF-FZ” is "filled for life" (no change intervals for ATF required). What's your take on both?
That CX-5 sounds like it could be a great vehicle with that many miles. And yes, if you buy it, change the ATF before 75,000 miles and use only the OEM Mazda fluid.
Sir. You are reviewing Mazda CX-5 as a good car but then you said you prefer all wheel drive. But it seems they don't make that car in front wheel drive, they only make the new ones as all wheel drive. so what do i do?
Their a class action lawsuit going on against mazda for installing defective cylinder head durning manufacturing. Which can cause coolant to get into the engine and cause catastrophic faliure. It include basically all model except the miata. Cx30,cx70,cx90,cx5, mazda3,mazda6, and included pretty much anything with skyactive g engine technology both turbo and non turbo. Be very careful when buying these car as mentioned only buy the ones that come from japan.
A "CUV" ('crossover utility vehicle") is NOT an "SUV" (sports utility vehicle). These are not 4WD trucks. They're station wagons with slightly improved ground clearance. Most of them aren't even as practical/functional as a large minivan.
I think I'll just keep it old-school and buy myself a 1970 Dodge Dart with a straigh, solid frame and decent body. I'll overhaul its Slant Six and Torque-Flite automatic, then throw in a Sure-Grip rear-end for good measure, and wrap the interiot with some DynaMat insulation to keep it quiet inside. That'll give me a dependable car which would be a CINCH to work on for at LEAST another 500,000 miles.
Nice! I'd skip the Sure-Grip for me though. The /6 Sure-Grip I had tended to side slip on black ice and push too straight through snow when turning. It was a tight one.
That’s one thing that concerns me. I’ve owned a ‘21 Touring since new with 50k miles. Hoping that they fixed the issues with the 18-20 MYs that had some issues with Cylinder Deactivation. 🤞
They can have 'em all. I had a 2015 Mazda 6 with an electrical problem even the dealer could not figure out, dead battery problem. I had to trade thing thing on something reliable. Like a Honda.

HR-V 2005 here in Norway. Just passed the equivalent of MOT with 155000 kms. No issues, just regular maintenance. A couple bushings in the suspension since I bought it 3 years ago. And btw, I paid less than 2000 US dollars for it. Cheers😊
Maza CX-30 is a sweet ride. I have a 14-year Honda CRV that is a great car, virtually no maintenance.
I just purchased a 2023 mazda3 HB. Hopefully I have no issues with it. I don't know much about mazdas, I'm switching over to a 2015 camry that gave me no issues at all. So pray for me!
Scotty, only the Mazda CX-50 is made in the plant shared with Toyota in 'Bama. The CX-5 and CX-30 are 100% Mazda.
I’m keeping my CX-5. My dad had a Ridgeline that the failed radiator took out the transmission. Bad engineering/design. No more Honda for me.
Love my cx 30 had it 1 year 20k miles really feels like a Audi or bmw
This was a great video Scotty. I may look at the CX-5. Thanks for the info. Should make more videos like this one. 🇨🇦💝🇺🇸🙏🥰
Most hondas with cvt trans will have issues around 100k miles, their new 9-10 speeds are jerky and eating themselves on some models. Also their 1.5t engines 2021 up are blowing head gaskets like old Subarus. Also the paint bubbles and chips early on some of their colors.
My friend has a (somewhat crappy) 2002 Honda Element and it still holds up
I like Hondas but I still prefer buying the 07 Toyota Highlander to this 09 Honda pilot.
I'd take the Pilot
With the Honda pilot, just change the ATF 3 times with AMSOIL or better after market ATF. it will shift like butter. DW-1 OEM isnt the best contrary to what people believe
I've heard people say the valvoline max life is preferred compared to the honda dw1.
I really like the Mazda CX5 and the Pilot
My Acura lasted 20 years, the first 15 without rust. The Honda paintjob started failing at 11 years (white flakes of clearcoat disease). Once the Honda anti-rust elves died, the car started going downhill fast. You really don't want to drive a unitbody car once it starts rusting if you can help it, from a structural safety perspective.
2007 Honda Pilot less than 45,000 miles original owner ~ since I use about 1/4 tank of gas a month mileage is no big deal!🤣😂😆
I wish I COULD find a mechanic like you around here.... DID find one- and he's quitting this year... good mechanics that are TRUSTWORTHY are very hard to find lately.. especially up here in the hills :)
The CX30 is a very sharp vehicle, beautiful color and the interior is very nice
I bought a 2024 soul red CX30 this year and I agree it’s a very sharp vehicle.
The only car that might be better than a Corolla is a Mazda 3 non-turbo with a regular automatic transmission.
It's unlikely due to the corollas 9th generation reliable motor. They can have 500K miles and won't need any maintenance other than fluids and it's oil change. I've heard more issues on a Mazda 3 than a 2003-2005 Corolla.
@@wheresthegrillcheese All Corollas nowadays have CVTs, and their 2.0 DF engines have EGR systems. The 2ZR-FE engines were boring but bulletproof.
Mazda transmission aren't that great
Mazda also is very cheap and will crush like a tin can in any accident
OR it might not be...
Just bought a Mazda 2024 CX-50. It turns just like my Mazda 929 did.
Scotty, looking forward to your take on the planned Honda-Nissan merger.
Merry Christmas and Happy New year's.
Use Christmas emojis.🎄
Never knew you could turn off 2 cylinders in some Honda 6 cylinder engines... those Honda Pilots are nice.
Stay away from 2009 bc transmission issues, 2010+ fixed it.
Everyone should probably turn that feature off at the dealer
05 Pilot still kicking!
Trending in my area, are Independent shops selling cars that are mechanic liens. What you said about to the moon repairs.
Any new vehicle needs a couple years to get bugs out. Yes Toyota and Honda are the best as they pay attention and when they mess up make it right
2005 4-Runner 139k miles V6 4x4
I will never sell it!
No rust either except some on frame but it’s dealt with.
2008 Sport with 262K here....Yours is just about broken in!....Gave. my 98 to my Bro in Law at 300k. ....still running strong!
12:56 i never knew that Scotty. Thank you for teaching us as always!
Overcompensating now on bashing Toyota. Honda still uses a timing belt? How primitive.
I traded in my rav4 for a cx70… not looking back
I drove Mazda's from 1973 (RX3), all the way to a 2013 CX5 which was good, but underpowered for the highway.
Season greetings to Scotty kilmer and family veiwers and subscribers happy holidays
MAZDA! ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM!
Feliz navidad scooty stay safe best for you and you family.
when I got in my dad's 2017 Forester on a cold day I looked and looked for a temp gage and discovered all it has was a little thermometer image in the instrument cluster. Blue is cold, red is warm WTH
I miss when SUV’s could actually go offroad. Speaking of which I’d love to hear what you’ll say about the new 4Runner and Land Cruiser
I"m seriously looking at RAV 4 the V-6 version 4wd (center diff lock)- or CX5, or CX-30 THANKS for this.. GREAT REVIEW AS USUAL.
14:07 savage! No holds barred!
Merry Christmas Scotty. Can you explain why new cars like Suvs Jeeps etc. are selling for almost $200,000.
127,000 is not a lot of miles. That’s just middle age. Are you going to call a 30 year old person a senior citizen? lol
Yes
Braking distance 150ft. Thats bad. Buy a newer honda pilot with 120-130ft distance
😂😂😂 that's B'S @@thystaff742
My 2007 Aveo still has only 16,000 original miles. Still in showroom condition.
@@thystaff742 then you must be a child 😂 30 only sounds old to a 10 year old.
Hey Scotty, I got OA these days, which SUV has the most comfortable leather seats?
Post Hemorroid surgery polls, will answer that question.
We loved Honda generators in construction and I’ve had Honda motorcycles that are very dependable and well built. Honda cars do nothing for me tho.
Yes honda bikes keep on going.
Scotty, what are your thougts about the proposed Honda/Nissan merger. One makes great cars, the other, not so much....
I love my Pilot I have a 2006 and it only has 78,000 miles🙂
Wise man. Love his plain clothes too. Thoreau said beware of all enterprises that require new clothes and not rather a new wearer of clothes.
Thanks for time, what would be a better car to buy, 2015 manual transmission Sentra or 2015 manual transmission Ford Focus in CA with about 120 k miles for around 4k, thanks
What about Subaru's? I have one and I LOVE i!!!!
Hello Scotty!!! I enjoy your honesty and have learned to trust your opinions! Could you do a run down on that new Land Rover Defender 90 2 door? It seems a little more affordable but is it worth it?
Thought you recommended bringing all vehicles in to a mechanic to see if the check engine light was reset recently?
I had a Mazda years ago. But, then they were sold, and I thought they were not any good after.
What year do think is best for newer year
dealer said my cx5 all wheel drive only engages when needed not all the time so no need to change all 4 tires. was that not true?
Honda Pilot.
Mazda CX-5.
Mazda CX-30.
That Mazda cx5 door sounded very hollow when you opened it
2013-2018 Toyotas (Avalon) are extremely solid and proven
It would be cool to build the crappiest new car ever with you. To put every crappy modern feature and trim package into one car.
Like a half ton pickup with a turbo 3 cylinder with one of those cvt transmissions and all the other crap.
And the 27 function electronic tailgate ergonomic happiness system.
Nice info.
Thanks Scotty.
I thought the Cx-5 drove better than the Rav4.
It does. RAV4 is overrated. The only good thing about rav4 is the reliability. Mazda for The driving dynamics all the way
@@ricardocruzjr581 What a silly comment.
Mazda 2021 cx5 could be purchased with front wheel drive only. I own one.
a controll arm is also not so expensive is it ?
It looks like Scotty has just over a week to get to the new year w/out "RIP" ..... hang in there Scotty you can do it.
Love my cx30
Scotty have you reviewed the Honda Ridgeline truck? Isn’t it like the pilot base? I have an older one 2011.
Not the ol herky jerkey!! 😂😂
A "CUV" ('crossover utility vehicle") is NOT an "SUV" (sports utility vehicle). These are not 4WD trucks. They're station wagons with slightly improved ground clearance. Most of them aren't even as practical/functional as a large minivan.
Scotty, tell us about the 19mpg!!
@Riverdeepnwide Ah, thank you! I didn't know that. O.K., then. No Sure-Grip.👌
Mazdas are easy as hell to work on. And the transmissions are light-years ahead of that torqueflite.
Mazdas now feature cylinder deactivation on their motors now. That feature is a deal killer for me.
Same here!
Get it turned off at the dealer or by a mechanic
@@JoshuaDarius-bm7nc to my knowledge, there isn’t a way to defeat the CD with the 2.5L SkyActiv engines.
Thanks Scotty😊
04:32 ok. Did Scotty poof 💥💨💨💨 or was it a ghost. Because I heard a growly sound. I'm not joking.
