I have a 22 year old male res (I got him whem he was 12) and I feel awful knowing I didn't know enough to understand the setup he's lived in for years was woefully inadequate. This weekend he has gotten all the upgrades I can afford right now to both his indoor tank and his outdoor habitat. Tank topper, live plants, new lightbulbs and new filtration system indoors, more space and custom eggcrate basking platform outdoors. Bigger tank and more decorations (I read ya loud and clear!) in the coming months. At least his golden years will be comfortable. I love my little old man and I promised him I can do better. He promised to stop chasing the dogs around... at least one of us will keep their word. 😉 🎈
@@TheTurtleGirl Update: Had to bring him in since it's getting too hot outside... he ADORES the tank topper, climbing and sliding like a hyper kid at a playground, then napping on the little swim legde before going again. He massacred the plants the first day-- apparently he had a complete blast ripping them into itty bitty bits that clog the filter. 😅 The plants came with snails that he really enjoyed hunting, too, so... he has definitely gotten a lot of enrichment!
I feel ya. I've been daydreaming a long time about moving mine outside (no clue how old she was when I got her 13 or 14 years ago), but after deciding to just upgrade her habitat indoors - fears of hawks and my new dog is a hyper turd - I have learned that her current habitat was probably insufficient when I upgraded her to that all those years ago. I'm also doing a make-do upgrade this weekend including one of those tank-toppers so I can fill the water all the way up and brand new bulbs - I didn't know they lose their UV rays! But it's just additional motivation to get off my behind and finish my remodel so I can get new furniture and a giant tank moved in.
I cant seem to get a tank topper delivered to me in Ireland. And l rescued a yellow belly adult 8 years old about 10" on shell so like that tiny tank and no heat lamp... have them sorted now just the basking place 😀
2 years ago I knew nothing about turtles then 'The turtle girl' came to my rescue. Since then I have never missed a video of urs and if it's abt turtles I'd see it in 480p(my max) and never skip a sec . There was no way I could have kept my turt without ur vids. Your suggestions helped me a lot. Thank you🎈
My third grade teacher had a class pet turtle. It was just kept in a tank there was no place for it to ask on it was a relatively empty tank with feeder goldfish. I always wondered how he would even take the turtle home with him on the weekends or brakes😖 but that's probably the least of my worries.
I love how non-judgemental you are while you review these. You're really great at suggesting possible improvements without sounding like your chastising your audience. It's refreshing to see and I really enjoy learning from you!
Just discovered your channel! Got kiddo a RES for her birthday. It's the 3 RES I've owned (her name is Sunflower). Rescued her from Petco, she's missing some toes because the other turtles at Petco attacked her. Definitely helped with giving me some ideas for how to decorate our new tank! Loved the video! She's super friendly and curious, and loves the river rocks and is constantly diving down to poke around them.
I have my hatchling in a 20 gallon. He was a rescue and is a tripod. He has difficulty swimming so the tank is only 1/2 full. As he grows and gets stronger I will OFCOURSE raise the level for him. And eventually when he gets too big I will either get a larger tank or may just go ahead and add a koi type pond but only for my turtle in my fenced back yard. (We have a tropical weather year round so I know he’d be happy outside too)
I don't know, maybe you missed it but Jonathan's tank at 3:30 has a GLASS thermometer at the bottom right corner and those can be very very BAD for your turtle if they break.
🎈🎈🎈 so happy I found your channel... ive learned so much from you and the other channels you have suggested 💙 a friend was going to release his red ear slider into the wild and before I had done any research, we told him we would take it... glad we took him in... I've spent so much more money on this turtle than I ever thought I would... bc I realized the friend didn't have the correct set up... also, this is the first pet I've has in over 20 years... so I'm definitely doing a ton of research. Thank you again... I really appreciate you and your content!
I'm a recent turtle parent and I love your vids. You and dan the guppyman have helped out a lot. Thank you for posting these. I had no idea turtles to this much work to keep but because of you im trying my best to do it right
I think it’s a good idea to use glow in the dark rocks and decor to light up the tank because I don’t have two lights to use one for the tank and one for the basking area but my uvb lamp is for warmth and light so they should be good.
I don't have a uvb bulb on my tank because I take her outside a lot. I've been trying to find larger decorations too. I tried a lot of live water plants but she likes to dig them up.
🎈 enjoyed the video as always! I just moved into a new house and I finally have an entire room dedicated to my turtles/ fish tanks/ skink. My mom hand painted murals of turtles, a betta and a skink on the walls! It's my zen space where I can hang out and watch all my animals ❤
Hi Turtle Girl! First THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! You made Bash and Beauty VERRRRY happy turtles. I recently fell in love with a turtle and HAD to have one and it wasn’t expensive. After 2 days in the “clerk recommended “ starter turtle kit ( a 20g tank a bridge a tetra rock filter ) Bash wouldn’t move. The heater I bought didn’t work and he was cold and scared in a tiny tank... I found your videos... and you are a Godsend! You have found a calling and I thank you for making your experience available. Now Bash and Beauty ( now I have 2) are in a 125g tank with 500g of filtration 2 heaters set at 78.9... all the necessities and then some and they are active and my happiness moment is seeing them bask! That was a goal. We are in the second week now and 8 goldfish who have seemed to be pretty smart 🤣 my only issue now is the ammonia levels...Since this was originally a not well thought out plan... there is much I don’t know but I’m trying to get the health basics down as quickly as possible. I just found out about ammonia and Ph balance...They have brought me so much with just their presence that I want to give them an amazing space. Your passion when you talk about them is so contagious ❣️ KEEP BEING AMAZING, Turtle Girl!
Always love watching your videos and gaining tips and decor ideas. I have three red eared slider turtles, two 2yr old males and and one 1yr old female, and I love them to bits🥰🥰😍😍🎈🎈
I have four hatchling turtles, of three different breeds, in a 40-gallon breeder. I have never seen the slightest bit of aggression amongst any of them. If anything, they seem to enjoy each other's company. For instance, you can almost bet, at least 95% of the time, my two razorback musk turtles are always side-by-side. They even lay up against each other a lot of the time. And my pink belly sideneck and yellow-bellied slider are also together a lot. It's like I've got two little sets of buddies. So from my own personal experience, I think they do just fine in groups. 🐢🐢💦
I noticed that you have feeder fish in your turtle tank, what age does my turtle need to be for me to put feeder fish in? He is a red eared slider, and about 2 months old. And what feeder fish would you recommend?
I’ve heard turtles can start to eat fish at whatever age. I’m not sure 100% though. Safe fish feeders for res are swordtails, endlers, mollies, platies, guppies, and mosquito. Unsafe feeder fish include goldfish, rosy red minnows, white suckers, emerald shiner, and spottail fish. These fish all contain thiaminase which inactivates thiamin (vitamin b1) which can cause deficiencies and or death in turtles.
Ive had my turtle for about 3 months and he was basking a little bit but then I added fish about 4 weeks ago and since then he hasn't gone on the basking dock once, I've been taking him out and basking him myself but should I give him more time to start basking himself or do I take the fish out so he feels more comfortable and safe. Thanks
I'm planning to get a 200 gallon tank with all natural decorations and plants, in the future. The turtles that I'm looking at right now, are Alabama and Mississippi Map Turtles.
I’m getting my first turtle here soon and I’m looking to get a male Painted turtle that will grow to about 4-5 inches and have a 45 gallon tank and plan to have a above tank basking area. Do you think that will be enough room for him? And what decorations do you recommend for a it?
If you move it above the uvb probably wouldn’t be as beneficial to your turtle since it’s will be illuminating the tank. Personally I have a uvb over my tank and one over my basking area so that the tank gets illuminated and he gets uvb while he’s basking and swimming.
Dalia Torres I know I’m not the Turtle Girl, but absolutely! Just watch to make sure there are no problems swimming or your filter flow is too strong. Your turtle will most likely appreciate the space. You sound like a great turtle owner!
It will be okay as long as you provide it with a lot of decorations in the middle and close to the surface of the tank so it can rest from swimming. And also turtles like to sleep near the surface so they can just pop out their head out of the water and breath when they need to. So decorations by the surface are crucial for a baby. I had mine in deep water too but I bought a pack of turtle vines at the pet store and it perfectly provides it a big area full of vines by the surface where it can just chill without swimming, explore around and most importantly, sleep in. I highly recommend you find those
Hi I have a medium size garden pond with shallow areas with fish in it. I have a rly good filtration system and lots of plants. Could musk or map turtles live in my pond?
Where you guys get the basking tank on the aquarium? I never get to see these in Malaysia. I bought a basking plank though. It's not my turtle but, I really am worried n cared for my sister's turtle needs. Plus, the idea of 14:50 seems interesting. I've been think about doing like that to for some months but I'm afraid.
It's a common one sold here in the US. You could also make one yourself, as you mentioned. I'll also have a tutorial to a DIY basking area ruclips.net/video/ZjY3DqvNJvc/видео.html that you can check out :)
I bought a basking bulb from Walmart, do I need to buy an additional? Or is this one bulb good enough for a red ear slider? I know this isnt really not a video to ask but we would really like to know. Thanks!
Setting up my 55 gallon and was about to get rid of 10 gallon for red ear slider that’s less than a year old and saw that one setup with basking on top is crazy. 🤯 🎈
I need your help! My baby red eared slider has shell rot (i think) !!!!!!!!! She has the double lamp, the UVB and the heat, but she still has shell rot. And yes, she gets completely dry on her basking spot. Plz tell me what to do!!! 🎈
Obviously I’m not the turtle girl but are your lights within 9inches of your basking platform? And is your turtle basking at least a couple hours a day? Because both lights need to be pretty close and if it’s not basking for long it might be sick and you’d have to take it to a vet
I'm no vet or expert, and have never dealt with shell rot, so I don't know how much advice I can give, but what do the spots of shell rot look like? Are they smelly? Soft?
The Turtle Girl it’s not smelly, and i wouldnt say they r soft... they r only around the edges of the turtle’s scutes or shell shapes, if u know what im talking about. It also looks like some of her scutes/shapes r more elevated than others, almost like u can just detach it. Thats what gets me concerned though, because when i first got her she never had that...
I was just thinking, we have ATBA and floating/standing but what about using rocks and things like a paluarium or like 1/2 or 3/4 water and land, im going to try that
hii!! I have a uvb bulb and a halogen one is that okay or do i need someting else? And im going to put the uvb one on the top of the water and the halogen one on the top of the basking spot. (sorry if i misspelled something english isnt my first language)
🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈 Such great information 😊 I’m a new turtle owner. Learning as I go and doing as much research as I can to provide for the best life for my Mississippi Map Turtle names Covey. I also have axolotls as well😅. Currently planning out Covey’s upgrade but can’t decide on a tank or a pond. I’m leaning more towards a tank because of the option to always have her in sight but I also want to provide a more naturalistic setting for her. Being in Hawaii I was told that I did not need a UV light because of our natural sunlight but as I do more research I’m finding that that is not correct and being that my turtle is inside I do need both heat and UV so working on getting a set up for that. Her basking light is currently only putting out heat. Thank you for making these videos. You have been my number one source for my turtle care tips. Your videos have also helped me a lot with cooking my tank for my axols too 😊 Keep up the content ! ♥️🎈
Haha I have misspelled words 😅 I mean to say cooling* not cooking. But with that being said being in Hawaii it is a hard task to keep my axolotl tank cool. I’m working on installing an AC unit in the room they are kept in along with possibly getting a chiller 😭 💰 unfortunately the fan blowing on the top of the aquarium is not working and putting water bottles in the tank only works for an hour or two before I need to switch them out. 😕 the struggle is REAL but I am dedicated to providing all my aquatics the best quality of life I can give them 😊
I'm so glad these videos can help you. Definitely glad you realized through research that you need uvb if your turtle is inside. And keeping axo's tank cool is definitely a challenge lol I wish you the best of luck! Thanks for doing all you do for your pets!
_🎈_ I’m new but I’m gonna watch more videos, your channel seems interesting! And I have a random question: I know you are a turtle person but, do you like snakes or have any pet snakes? I’m a big snake person, lol.
I really want a hand on bog turtles but where i live its pretty difficult to find or maybe i dont know where to look for. I wish you could feature different types of turtles that remains small and easy to take care of and where to get them legally and be shipped safely to where im from
Um hey i have a question i got a turtle a couple days ago and I don’t have a tank and my parents don’t let me get a heat lamp so i keep it outside and a pool with a box it can go in for shade is that a bad thing or will that work for basking and its life in general and I’ve been worried about when winter comes? So can you answer these questions
The Turtle Girl thank you so much i have a hang above filter and it hasn't been working so my tank was really dirty but i just added more water like you said and it works thanks!!!!!
🎈Thank you for your input on my tank. Now I have some sand and alot more rocks in there. I am also looking for a tank between 75-100 gallons but with my circumstances it might be a bit difficult.
Hey Turtle Girl I have a few questions I’ve been wanting to ask you about Dubia roaches. The first one is are they legal in California? The second one is where did you buy yours? The third one is what can you feed them? Also, your videos are super helpful and entertaining to watch, keep it up. 👍
You'd have to do some research. I'm not really sure. I bought mine from someone who had a big colony, you can also buy them online or at expos to get started. They'll eat anything, I like to feed fresh fruits and vegetables.
Ok and thanks for replying. I appreciate it. Also, I didn’t know if you already knew this but for Kuzon instead of using a heat mat you could use the Deep Heat Projector by Arcadia which provides heat just like a heat mat would but in addition to heating up the bottom of the tank it heats the air in the area where you put it and would provide Kuzon with IRA and IRB which are infrared rays that are absorbed deep into their bodies that keeps them healthier and makes them more active which is good if you don’t want your gecko in its hide all the time. You should check it out when I get my gecko I’m going to get it for those reasons. (Like the heat mat you will have to get a dimming thermostat so that it won’t cook your gecko but I’m sure you have one already). Another thing I suggest is getting a bulb that provides UVB and UVA. Just like the Deep Heat Projector this also helps make sure Kuzon healthy and should increase his activeness. (One really good bulb is the ShadeDweller, or it’s other versions, that is also made by Arcadia that was specifically designed for Crepuscular animals). Sorry for the long paragraph and run on sentences I just wanted to share with you these things because I saw some videos on them on Leopards Gecko’s channel and thought they would be helpful for you. By the way I love your setup for Kuzon it looks really nice and he looks like he enjoys it. Thanks again for replying. 😁
My RES destroys all decorations! I’m experimenting with larger rocks and she seems to be okay with those but I was worried she would move them too much and crack the glass of the tank 🎈
Can you do a video about a pet that you think you would get next but something completely different to aquarium animals? But great video I love all of them great job 👌🏻
where can you buy cheap and good quality decor for your turtle? I have absolutely no decor in my tank at the moment and can't find any good decor that is safe for my turtles.
how do i send in??? i been watching u since i got a baby turtle then a rescue western painted. i just got a upgrade to 75 gal. i have solar uvb/uva combo 100 watt is that to high? can baby redearded slider go in 75 gal with adult painted will 6 in adult hurt or ear baby pleeese tell me? why isnt my painted swimming around like your terapin does .
Hey I have a question, if I were to use a siphon to do water changes and clean any debris, would I still need a filter? What would be the point of it then? ( If anyone has an answer feel free to answer )

I had mine in deep water too but I bought a pack of turtle vines at the pet store and it perfectly provides it a big area full of vines by the surface where it can just chill without swimming, explore around and most importantly, sleep in. I highly recommend you find those
Great advice above for sure :) adjust gradually and it should work out great!
Hi I have a medium size garden pond with shallow areas with fish in it. I have a rly good filtration system and lots of plants. Could musk or map turtles live in my pond?
I want you to react to mine when I finish moving halfway across the country lmao
travel safe, especially in these times! 😊all the best!
I'm getting a cage off chewy and it has the cutest. basking area! My mom finally agreed to get me a turtle!
Good to see you!
Your videos have really helped me with taking care of my hatchling red eared slider 🎈🎈
Do you have any ideas for basking lights? I'm getting a turtle soon but I'm not sure where to hang my basking lights.
I have two red ear sliders and three yellow belly sliders and the tend to destroy any and every decorations you throw in their tank.!
I bought a basking bulb from Walmart, do I need to buy an additional? Or is this one bulb good enough for a red ear slider? I know this isnt really not a video to ask but we would really like to know. Thanks!
You should have a basking bulb but also a heat bulb
@@Uneatable Thank you lol
My turtle is driving me crazy 🥺 he is always standing to try and let his head out of the water, never uses the basking area or even swim !! 😂
i’m having this exact same problem :/ my turtle is basking more now but he doesn’t swim at all :(
welll i know something that will solve that problem
Gina Kranker ?
if you have a common musk/mud they dont swim or bask much as other turtles
Keep it up☺️😁Great video you have the best info
Setting up my 55 gallon and was about to get rid of 10 gallon for red ear slider that’s less than a year old and saw that one setup with basking on top is crazy. 🤯 🎈
Just got my first turtle and you have helped so much! I am soon getting a new tank and have a baby turtle! Thabk you for your help!
I'm so glad to hear that! happy holidays!
I love love your videos every Friday I look forwards to your videos 🎈
thanks Luke!
What u actully responded
Best day ever
How big is the tank in the back and is that a temporary tank for you turtle. And what kinda turtle is it
Love the videos so amazing 🎈
This is amazing I love theses videos
Is sand or gravel better for a red eared and yellow eared sliders?
any tips on in water basking areas for 30 gallon tanks?
Love it 💞🔥
Should the tank have lighting during he night or is it being in the dark ok?
I need your help! My baby red eared slider has shell rot (i think) !!!!!!!!! She has the double lamp, the UVB and the heat, but she still has shell rot. And yes, she gets completely dry on her basking spot. Plz tell me what to do!!! 🎈
Obviously I’m not the turtle girl but are your lights within 9inches of your basking platform? And is your turtle basking at least a couple hours a day? Because both lights need to be pretty close and if it’s not basking for long it might be sick and you’d have to take it to a vet
And make sure she actually does have she’ll rot. I thought my turtle had shell rot but it was really just patterns on his shell.
I'm no vet or expert, and have never dealt with shell rot, so I don't know how much advice I can give, but what do the spots of shell rot look like? Are they smelly? Soft?
Also make sure your lights are on for 10-12hr a day
The Turtle Girl it’s not smelly, and i wouldnt say they r soft... they r only around the edges of the turtle’s scutes or shell shapes, if u know what im talking about. It also looks like some of her scutes/shapes r more elevated than others, almost like u can just detach it. Thats what gets me concerned though, because when i first got her she never had that...
I was just thinking, we have ATBA and floating/standing but what about using rocks and things like a paluarium or like 1/2 or 3/4 water and land, im going to try that
what filter would you recommend for a 20 gal long?
I use two whisper 40i
I like the aquaclear power filters for a tank of that size.
hii!! I have a uvb bulb and a halogen one is that okay or do i need someting else? And im going to put the uvb one on the top of the water and the halogen one on the top of the basking spot. (sorry if i misspelled something english isnt my first language)
🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈
Such great information 😊 I’m a new turtle owner.
Your videos have also helped me a lot with cooking my tank for my axols too 😊
Keep up the content !
Cool video. So far I've been watching this series of videos backwards haha 🎈
haha awesome! thanks Kenny!
_🎈_
I’m new but I’m gonna watch more videos, your channel seems interesting! And I have a random question: I know you are a turtle person but, do you like snakes or have any pet snakes? I’m a big snake person, lol.
I've got a snake!
#earlysquad!!! Love ya girl!!!
yesss!!! you're on it!
Omg I love you tysm
I really want a hand on bog turtles but where i live its pretty difficult to find or maybe i dont know where to look for. I wish you could feature different types of turtles that remains small and easy to take care of and where to get them legally and be shipped safely to where im from
Another great video. Thank you! 🐢📍🎈
Appreciate it!
That’s fine but in the future you need to get a heat and uvb lamp. What type of turtle do you have?
The Turtle Girl thank you so much i have a hang above filter and it hasn't been working so my tank was really dirty but i just added more water like you said and it works thanks!!!!!
glad I could help!
@@TheTurtleGirl also what decorations do u recommend because i cant find sticks
what are some good decor pieces you recommend
I like natural - rocks, wood, and the like.
Earlyish! Love your videos, and your turtles!❤
thanks for watching!
🎈Thank you for your input on my tank. Now I have some sand and alot more rocks in there. I am also looking for a tank between 75-100 gallons but with my circumstances it might be a bit difficult.
Not because I can't afford it though
Thank you so much for sharing your tank with us!
🎈🎈🎈 ^_^ I like these vids. They give me inspiration on how to set up my turtle’s home
🎈
Love your videos girl!
thanks Elizabeth! Really appreciate that!
My RES destroys all decorations! I’m experimenting with larger rocks and she seems to be okay with those but I was worried she would move them too much and crack the glass of the tank 🎈
Oh wow I’ve never been so early lol. Anyway nice video. You’re one of the reasons i got turtles.
Can you do a video about a pet that you think you would get next but something completely different to aquarium animals? But great video I love all of them great job 👌🏻
thanks for the suggestion!
The thing I need to work on is a filter and decorations but I do t know what filter to use tell me
If you have good suggestions
I personally use 2 fluval u3 filters and they work great for me, I have a ybs
I personally like fluval brand filters, either the aquaclear power filters or the fx series canisters :)
Love your videos keep it up
Thank you!
You are the best turtle youtuber
Nice vid. How much were your turtles and where’d you get em
I found mine on the road
JthorthegamerYT we love saving turtles
im thinking of getting a turtle but i dont know how old or big it is so i dont know what size of tank to start with
🎈 Hope you do more. We are getting closer to finishing our setup. Just need wood that sinks all the driftwood we find floats to much
Wonderful! Driftwood can definitely be tricky. Oftentimes boiling and a good long soak can get it waterlogged. :)
Where did u buy your basking area?
Love this channel👌
thank you!
where can you buy cheap and good quality decor for your turtle? I have absolutely no decor in my tank at the moment and can't find any good decor that is safe for my turtles.
how do i send in??? i been watching u since i got a baby turtle then a rescue western painted. i just got a upgrade to 75 gal. i have solar uvb/uva combo 100 watt is that to high? can baby redearded slider go in 75 gal with adult painted will 6 in adult hurt or ear baby pleeese tell me? why isnt my painted swimming around like your terapin does .
I still have a lot of submissions to get through that were sent initially, but if/when it opens, I'll announce it here.
Hey I have a question, if I were to use a siphon to do water changes and clean any debris, would I still need a filter?
What would be the point of it then?
( If anyone has an answer feel free to answer )
Can you please share me of your Busking box purchase link?
I need a busking area like what you have...
I'm from India. I love your videos.. Love from my side. Stay healthy.
