The latest episode of Percy Jackson dropped a few days ago and man does each episode just keep getting better and better! Although it was slightly unexpected that I would get major Wonka vibes from Hephaestus. What was with that flute?
Anyway here’s me rambling about the episode A God Buys Us Cheeseburgers. Enjoy.

Idk if anyone mentioned it but I like that Annabeth was the one who gave Ares the “rack off” attitude and *NOT* Percy, because in actual Greek mythology, Athena and Ares HATE eachother and are always fighting/competing with eachother.
So either Annabeth just naturally inherited that from her mom, or acted that way to kinda help get back in her favor/good side.

    • @Edward-W
      @Edward-W 6 месяцев назад +18

I like that change too. Percy got fed up and told Ares to F around and find out at the end, which was enough to establish their conflict. Since we didn't yet get to see Annabeth's arachnophobia, this was a good way to show that she's not flawless either. Because it's seemingly her fatal flaw of Hubris getting riled up by Ares' aura that makes people angry. She is gets oherconfident facing up to Ares

@@Edward-W I kinda wonder if they will somewhat change Annabeth’s arachnophobia because the Arachne story in myth has two sides which. It’s not as controversial as Medusa’s but since they showed both sides of Medusa’s story (which they didn’t explore in the books), and is making Athena look like an awful mom (which she wasn’t in the books- limited in her abilities to be a mom, sure, she wasn’t the best but better than most gods) I’m wondering if they will use Annabeth’s arachnophobia as a way to show Annabeth that Athena isn’t “all bad” the same way they kinda used Medusa as a way to show Athena’s rage, selfishness, and pettiness (and Poseidon being sick and caring for revenge but this isn’t about him).
The more popular version of the myth is that Athena punished and turned Arachne into the spider because she was standing up to and thinking she’s better than a God- making her *not* God fearing which is a sin. Athena thought cursing her in a divine power no one can break- even the other gods- and cursing her children, children’s children and children’s children would be just for her arrogance. Even as a spider though, Arachne mocked Athena as she never lost her talent and was still a good weaver in her cursed form; better yet, now even her children and entire bloodline will always be blessed with this inherited talent so that’s why fear of spiders is so common and violent as way for Athena to get the last laugh on the matter as no one will appreciate or focusing on the weaving. Some variations even mention Athena enjoying everytime a spider is killed because she sees the fear they have when they fight for their life which is the exact fear Arachne did not have, and if she did, her family would not be constantly feared, targeted, damned and murdered for all of eternity. That’s actual Greek lore and then Rick added in the books all of Athena’s children are naturally born with a fear of spiders as spiders have since hated the children of Athena, often singling them out due to Athena's unfair treatment of Arachne. Which makes sense given the myth.
BUT the other side of the myth since people couldn’t fathom how the Goddess of Wisdom would be so cruel and *not tactful* as the punishment didn’t even work since Arachne still ended up being a better and hard working weaver even in her cursed form, was that since Athena couldn’t take Arachne with her to Olympus and not wanting to wait till Arachne’s death to change her form out of pity, Athena turned her into a spider during Arachne’s prime so it was a transformation of dignity. Athena can now appreciate her weaving wherever she wanted and wherever she went as she would always see the webs. Also so that humans can naturally learn from spiders so that the talent of weaving was never lost which also ensures Athena’s legacy as the goddess of weaving. So a lot of people don’t believe Athena actually punished Arachne as Athena herself was the protectress of weavers. They actually think Poseidon made humans fear spiders to get back at Athena, and then Athena made horses (which is one of Poseidon’s scared animal) scared of spiders. The myth about her contest with the talented Arachne is supposed to be a fascinating story about women who excelled in their craft and used their skill with ingenuity, but the damnation storyline is more popular. Some people even believe Athena turned Medusa to a gorgon not only to resemble more like her family, but to protect herself so no one can have the chance to assault her ever again and how she is now the ultimate warrior. Even after Percy cuts Medusa’s head off, Athena as a way of honoring Medusa put her likeliness on her aegis vs punishing Medusa for being raped in her temple and using her as a scapegoat since Athena couldn’t punish Poseidon directly.
It could be nice if they do this right using one of Athena’s myth to show her bad side (Medusa) and another to show her good side (Arachne). They could be foils to eachother.

So a possible explanation about the Annabeth almost drowning moment: As someone who whitewater kayaks, I did not view that as her not being able to swim. Instead, I viewed it as her not knowing how to swim in active water. There's a difference to it in how you swim. The water might look like it's not moving swiftly, but it is *very* hard to make progress sideways like that. Considering that Annabeth would be very tired at that point (Last we saw her sleep was on the train and she's been running around and moving constantly since), plus all the clothes she was wearing (cotton soaks up water very quickly and makes it extremely hard to swim in general, and that's not even taking into consideration her shoes), it's not hard to imagine that she was poorly fighting against the water itself. Her clothes dragging her down. Her being exhausted already. The water was moving down and she was trying to swim right across the current, which isn't going to get far without the right technique.
As for Athena being a #greatmom in the books... Um... She literally sacrificed thousands of her children to retrieve her statue because pride. Sure, she acknowledges every single one of them, but she also has to decide to have children. It's not like she sleeps with a mortal and oops didn't use protection. It's like she finds a mortal she likes and decides "I'm gonna give you a gift, have a baby that is mine." So acknowledging her children is more like a side-effect. It's another point of pride for her. Like "Yes, I made this with my brain. Isn't it great?" Sure, she's not as trash as Ares, but she's definitely not winning mom of the year award.
About Ares, it's been a while since I read the books, but I'm pretty sure he was manipulated into helping Kronos, not doing so actively. So your second theory about his scowl in the diner is probably the correct one lol Dude really had salt over one of them not being trapped forever.

Huh, i interpreted that line from Percy about his mom the exact opposite. To me, that was Percy feeling guilty. He felt that his mom wanted to keep him away and just earlier that day, he let his dad in. To me, in that moment, Percy felt he betrayed his mom's intentions. Anabeth reassures him that it wasn't to stop him from getting close to the olympians, but to stop him from being like the olympians

I personally loved the golden chair stuff; it's a nice mythological addition and I'm a sucker for self-sacrifices (I liked it the last episode and I loved it even more here; I think that this one build off nicely of the last one). I'm not that upset about it not being Annabeth who gets into the chair, as we're getting into Percy's self-sacrificing nature as his fatal flaw. I do agree that the stakes weren't that high; it was fairly predictable that Percy was going to get out of the chair in a few minutes, but I did like the suspense on HOW it was going to happen, and I still found the scene quite emotional. Best episode so far, can't wait for the next one!

I love this episode so much, one of the few things is didn't enjoy in this chapter was Grover being mostly sidelined, but here they kept him with Ares and i think its so much better for the story and Grover's character because so far in the series/book, Grover is just like comic relief/some about pan and more about Thalia but that's more prominent in the books.

    • @tevenpowell8023
      @tevenpowell8023 6 месяцев назад +14

Agreed. Giving Grover a kind of mediator role fits him quite well, and gives him a skill set that's distinct from Annabeth and Percy's more action oriented ones. I hope they devolp this more down the line.

    • @alesonu
      @alesonu 6 месяцев назад +12

I agree. I found it slightly strange in the end of Lightning thief that Grover got the Searcher's license considering he almost always got treated as comic relief. So, I was happy how they showcased him using his empathy and understanding of emotions to figure Ares out. This shows real growth in his character, him facing a literal God (showing him getting more courageous) and his trust on his two frds when he readily agreed to be a hostage (I mean if they fail, he might be killed). This shows his speciality and rightfully shows why he deserved the license!

I do understand them having Annabeth see the fates cut Luke's thread, but at the same time, it's Percy's decision, the big decision that the entire series builds up to, that results in Luke's death and redemption. Percy choosing to trust Luke and hand him the knife to end his own life is what saves Olympus and the world. So even though it doesn't mean anything to Percy right now (and nobody knows that it's Luke's thread so it's not like that matters yet either anyway) it will ultimately be a thread that he watches get cut as Luke takes his own life to stop Kronos. But also, since Annabeth is the one who is going to have the influence on Percy to help him trust Luke at that pivotal moment, it does still make sense that she is the one who sees the thread cut here. Either way it works.

@@Edward-W - I was going to say exactly that. It was Annabeth who figured it out and it only worked because Percy trusted her enough to hand the dagger to Luke in the end. Without her there Percy would have never trusted Luke and the entire thing hinged on Percy's decision to do that. Also, as the video points out besides being enemies Percy has nowhere near as close of a relationship as Annabeth and Luke so it makes way more sense for Annabeth to forsee the death of her brother than it does for Percy to forsee the death of an enemy who he doesn't really even interact with as much throughout the series if we're being honest. it makes sense that Percy saw it in the books because it's all his pov but the ability to change it in the show was presented and while I wouldn't have minded if it was still Percy, I do understand completely why it's Annabeth.

I'm gonna be honest, where did y'all get in books that Luke was "in love with Annabeth" I will never understand. I admit I read them long ago, but all I got from books was that Annabeth had a CRUSH ON HIM. Which is understandable. But he just really cared about her, she was extremely dear to him. Especially after Thalia sacrificed herself, he got super attached. But it wasn't THAT way. You can love someone without BEING in love.

He asks Annabeth if she ever really loved him, which people interpret as... romantic love for some reason??? I'm right with you, I don't think he was a pedo. A bad guy? Yeah. So here is the brief scene from The Last Olympian.
"Did you..." Luke coughed and his lips glistened red. "Did you love me?"
Annabeth wiped her tears away. "There was a time I thought..." She looked at [Percy]. "You were like a brother to me Luke," she said softly. "But I didn't love you."
Which I think seems to be placing brotherly love/sibling love in a different category than the love she is talking about? She almost definitely did love him as family. So, her saying no would imply it was a different type of love he was asking about.
So yeah. A confusingly worded scene, not really sure what Luke's intention was with that question, or what Annabeth/ Rick meant by that.

The change in the tunnel of love is the best in the series so far. The whole point of Percy Jackson is to bring the Greek myths to life in a modern story for modern audiences, by including various Greek myths into the story. The writers spotted a perfect opportunity for more of this with the golden chair, instead of the original, which Rick just made up. I guarantee that if Rick had thought of the golden chair back in the day, he would’ve included it instead. This isn’t necessarily faithful to the lightning thief, but it’s very faithful to the concept of Percy Jackson

As a person who had a deadbeat father: Percy "simping" for his father after being saved makes 100% sense. He trusts his mother and his mother spoke well of Poseidon. Percy is scared about whether or not he will get his mother back, so he clings to the idea of his father. Percy who has never had a father figure craves to have what other children have, even though he knows it probably won't happen. And it hurts him every time he is reminded that he won't get it, it makes him angry. But the high of getting attention and affection deafens the bad times, since it fulfills his dream. You can see him hyping up the bare minimum parenting into something big, since he wants to see it as a sign that his father cares more than he actually does. Then he feels bad when he realizes that his mother wanted him to be away from the godly world and he had began to open up.

Actually Hephaustus' flute seems similar toa pan flute, and with all the stuff they said in episode 4 about him, it could mean that in this version Pan was one of Hephaustus' few real friends. So that flute could be a gift from pAn, which he now integrated with his technology so he can always remember him.

I think your wrong about Hephaestus. Timothy Omundson is an amazing hephaestus not just because he's an amazing actor but also showing Disability Representation. Omundson suffered a major stroke in 2017 that paralyzed his left side. He uses a mobility device himself, just as Hephaestus does.

I actually think you got the dialougue of Percy about his mother incorrect. Imo, it was more like him saying that his mom did not want him to be part of this messed up family. And she was trying to keep him safe and protected from this immature Gods. And Annabeth said that maybe Percy got it wrong and that Sally might have been preparing him so that he is not heart broken when he gets to know about this messy family.

I don’t know if you will read this but I never interpreted Luke as in love with Annabeth, I just thought he asked because he wanted to make sure she didn’t hate her after all he had done and because it’s a known fact that she had a crush on him. I don’t think Rick meant that way either but maybe I’m just delusional

Took me 5 episodes, but the show finally convinced me. I'll invest.
I'm not sure I want to read the book though. I like the series for representing the gods as actually flawed and even toxic (and monstruous, depending on the myth's version you believe in). I hear the books don't really have that.
What do you guys think ?

Percy squared up with Ares because Ares general aura is that which makes everyone around him angry and wanting to start fights. At least, that's how it is in the books.
    BOOK SPOILERS AHEAD
I think Ares is wearing the helmet because that is Hades' helm of darkness that Luke stole
Also SP, you should mention that there will be *book* spoilers in the video instead of just spoilers

Those braids are heavy when wet. Her head probably weighed a ton! Add to it that there is a current and she’s trying to swim opposite it.. well, if you don’t have the training to cross a current properly and you’re weighed down by clothes, shoes and hair, it’s not at all a surprise that she couldn’t get out of that on her own.

1:51 I don’t know what you’re talking about, she has a crush on him, and that’s it. It’s not even reciprocated by Luke. He’s perfectly willing to take advantage of her, and do whatever it takes, he even tries to kill her on multiple occasions. Idk why you think this is a “pedo” storyline, a 12 year old has a crush on a 19 year old, and it’s not reciprocated. This is fine and perfectly realistic

I would distinctly not say that Athena is the best godly parent in the book. Not the worst, but she can be overly demanding and outright cruel to her children at times, though she does seem to care whether they live or die.
Poseidon could have done much better, but he was much better than a lot of the other gods. It is distinctly shown that he has favorites among his kids though. He only parents some of them.

What is with this pedophilia obsession you have with Annabeth and Luke? It's explicitly stated many times in both PJO and HOO that Luke only ever thought of Annabeth as a little sister. And it was VERY clearly reiterated by Luke in episode 2 of this show. The whole point was the promise of being family to Annabeth, to never abandon her like her own family did. Annabeth was the only one of the two who developed a crush. And kids having crushes on someone a few years older is very much normal. So maybe just drop it?

Honestly my guess for why they had all the Hephaestus stuff was because they simply just didn’t have the budget. They tried to flesh it out more by giving him like a sympathetic moment but honestly it’s just better in the books. Sorry Rick this one didn’t hit for me.

I don't even know where to start with this... Anybody saying that they love this show because they were "book-lovers" or for "book accuracy" either CLEARY hasn't read the books since they came out in 2005 OR they're a bot from Disney to fluff the positive reviews and make it seem like their dumpster fire isn't what it seems.
    I'll just list these off:
    1. Percy acts like he eats at Weenie Hut Juniors in the show. In the books, he always stands up for himself and acts courageously when confronted by bullies. In the show he says stuff like "If I get glory will people stop picking on me?" and questions whether or not he wants out of the quest midway because it's hard. Book Percy would never.
    2. Percy is a natural-born swordsman. His skills have been completely removed from the show. In the scene with Mrs. Dobbs in the book, he acts quickly, has lightning-fast reflexes, and CUTS HER IN HALF. In the show Dobbs practically falls on Riptide which Percy accidentally opens. His ADHD is supposed to make him a threat on the battlefield and they've completely ignored this.
    3. This Percy/Grover beef in the show is nonsense. They are best friends in the book throughout the whole time and they never have this level of tension. He never questions Grover's loyalty.
    4. Percy's mom lets Gabe walk all over her in the books. This is supposed to cause tension between Percy and Gabe, leading Percy to stand up for his mom since she won't (adding onto the fact that Percy stands up for himself when confronted by bullies). For some reason they have her standing up for herself.
    5. Grover, Percy, and Annabeth have virtually no cohesion as actors. It feels like they're just reading their lines. I get they're kids but still.
    6. Minotaur scene is underwhelming with a lack of fear or action (attributed to the decision to take Percy's latent battle ability out of his character)
    7. Percy has no idea his mom is alive when starting the quest in the books. He goes on the quest because he's been chosen and thinks he has nowhere left to go.
    8. Percy's claiming scene. He's supposed to get a beatdown by Clarisse and her crew. He gets backed into the water where he begins healing and overpowers them. I understand they're trying to show Annabeth's intelligence but there's a million missed opportunities to show this off.
    9. They don't show how deep Annabeth's relationship with Luke was like at all
    10. The Oracle scene has Gabe in it for whatever reason...
    11. Lastly, not a single character resembles what they look like in the books. Feel like this would be an easy one to fix.
