The most disappointing thing I learnt getting into chess is that they give a limp fish handshake when they lose instead of dramatically knocking their king over.
Right? They should throw their king at the opponent
I remember playing chess near a 5th floor window with my friend on his chess board. We were in school. I won and yeeted his king with mine, which to my surprise flew right out of the window, and landed near a car below. Dude was pissed until I got it for him a few minutes later. It was a very glorious moment for a 12 year old and I still remember how euphoric I felt back then. My friend was the best chess player in our school and I was like 3rd or 4th.

Yeah, Anand is the #1 for limp handshakes. When I played I would shake the other guy's hand regardless of how little effort he put in.
It's definitely a cultural thing in India. I noticed a lot of older Indians shake hands with just fingers instead of palm and is even a sign of endearment to hold someone's hand like that. What's cool is seeing other players like Hikaru reciprocate even though it's the opposite style of firm handshake of Americans. He might be aware of the culture and showing respect.

Maybe dude's on the spectrum and just fumbled the social bag. Maybe there was a fly on his upper arm that he kindly shooed away for his fellow chess enthusiast. Like hey I get it, I'm short too, and I also feel disrespected on occasion by the more lengthy people out there, but height was unlikely to have been a real factor in that dumbfounding interaction.

I hand shaked Anand in a exhibition tournament in morocco a few years back. He gave me the same handshake after we took a picture. I've always thought it was disrespectfull but the only thing he did was offering a draw. God I'm happy

Chess is war minus the blood. However the physiological wounds inflicted run deeper than any physical wounds. Expecting chess kings to shake hands is the equivalent of asking the gladiators to shake hands before a fight to death. It is not like the chess players are concluding a business deal so expecting a firm handshake is just pointless.

The handshake is just a formality in chess. It ties back to its tradition as a gentleman's game. However, just like anything else that's competitive, you're there to play the match and get it over with by beating them. No other sport makes you shake your opponent's hand before the match because you're not supposed to like your opponent in the first place.
