Ding winning the World Champion title means as much as him winning a glorified candidates tournament. As long as Magnus is still around and dominating the chess scene, the "World Champion" title means nothing more than a second place award.

In a way, I feel like Alireza is sympathetic to Magnus's career/life, because at Alireza's age, Magnus is winning all the games like this, and became World Champ at age 22 and dominated a whole decade. Imagine being 22, and no one in your current era of sports can compete with you. Kind of a lonely existence.
Magnus is still feeling this way. I think that's why we saw such domination, Magnus thought he really must play good chess in order to not lose in this event. This motivated him to actually play in form, and we saw how ahead he really is

This reminds me of when Magnus took out Fabiano in the SCC without losing a single game. When Magnus shows up rested, motivated, and on form he is so far ahead that it's almost scary to watch. Like these guys are historic players in their own right: Alireza is the youngest 2800 in history, and youngest player ever to have multiple candidates appearances, and Fabiano has the highest single tournament rating performance ever and is one of 3 players to reach 2850 in history! (The two others being freakin Kasparov and Carlsen). Like we're talking generational talents and yet when they run into Magnus at his best they're just completely and utterly helpless. It's honestly a privilege to get to watch greatness like this. It feels similar to how it was watching Usain Bolt, you could just sit back and know you were watching history unfold and know that you get to tell your grandkids that you saw true greatness live in your time!
@@danjor5749 I think that is quite outdated. He is nr 3 in Rapid and nr 6 in Blitz and has been top 10 for years, it was one of those narratives that since he repeatedly lost to Magnus and Hikaru people started saying he was bad even though he would beat almost anyone else.

Being able to appreciate greatness even when you're at the receiving end of a massive smackdown is extremely mature and I love how he said that this actually just motivates him to keep improving. One thing Magnus said leading up to the tournament was he wanted to be in better physical shape, cant help but feel like his mental is going to get stronger as he aligns his physical goals.
He absolutely should! He is still young and very blessed with having gotten a lot of exposure to the toughest tournaments and made deep runs in them. We often forget how many tough tournaments every legend had to go through to finally take some in full stride back to back.

This mindset Alireza has is absolutely what makes you better. Quick story, I play soft tip darts in the US at a fairly high level. I started playing locally over 10 years ago and after some years moved further and further from my local area trying to find competition. Eventually I found a place that has 1 world level dart player and several national level players and could work me over good. The point is iron sharpens iron. Thinking you are the best will cause you to peak along with being the big fish in the small pond, never be satisfied. You are only as good as the talent that surrounds you(for the most part). I am in no way comparing myself here just comparing the thought process as when he said it even makes him happy to lose to someone like Magnus. I feel the exact same way when I shoot out of my mind and still lose. It reminds me to get better.

It's nice to see Alireza maturing and seeing these games as opportunities to improve even more. Once he, or one of the Indian prodigies become World Champions, we will definitely see Magnus become interested in it again. He definitely feels more challenged by the new generation and enjoys playing against them.
