I know very little about this game. What is "qualifying for the win" ?
When a game is played with the Pillbug, one must neutralize the opposing Pillbug before one can win. This is called 'Qualified for the Win,' a term coined by Joe Schultz in his book 'Canon of Hive - Groundwork' (link below)

I find it kinda boring at this level with the expansions where layers open with the ladybug. This example with the pillbug makes it even worse.
There's a lot of synergy between the expansions but it's too predictable in the opening.
My preferred rule is to allow 1 expansion per player chosen during the game. It gives it a nice asymmetry.
Asymmetry sounds very interesting
