It’s remarkable to me how much effort you’ve put into this channel, for seemingly no reward. Thank you very much for the content, this is great. Very well made. I love the internet.
Well, my channel is monetized so I make a little bit off advertising. And of course, if you love Hive, you could buy my book. I think if you calculate how much revenue I make from this channel and 10+ years of book revenue I make about 18 cents an hour. :)
Bugzwang! Haha. New to this game, coming from chess, that's hilarious. Thanks for the terminology popups and thoughtful breakdown. I'm really excited to learn this game.

This is a wonderful game and recap Randy - you're really getting good at this! Well done! In particular - I love the decision tree commentary around the thinking in advance of "key moves" - this is SO helpful for pushing all of our knowledge higher. I'm sure this one was as exhausting as many of your most intense games - especially since I know you prefer real time to turn based. I have a good game going in arena now that has a couple of nice shutout and bugszawg and shutout release moments - including at least a couple teachable mistakes on both our parts. Let me know if you need a game to review that might be useful for the next one. (and FWIW - even if I hadn't known the out come - I would. have chosen Frasco from the position at 6:34...my intuition is that his queen choke is a better position that your two beetles...thanks for correcting that miss assumption.
Thanks John for the comment. I always appreciate your comments! It was almost exactly one year ago that we met for the Hive Live event in Minneapolis. I look forward to when we can do it again.
At 6:34, I think Randy is going to win. Good beetle/mosquito control and some good spawn points close to the black queen. The pillbug not having a good point of entry is worrying, though... Edit: I was right, yay! Very interesting game this one, taught me a lot about how to handle a defending pillbug as an attacker and how to use rings in a myriad of ways. Great job as usual with the analysis Randy, and congrats on the win!
Great video! Question: At 09:09 the white ant moves, and then the white grasshoper moves. Why not move the white beetle that's next to the black ladybug to the remaing spot in the left instead of the white grasshoper?
I have one aesthetic recommendation to the physical version of this game. The Queen Bee tile should have some subtle gold markings on the sides. This way, it can be identified when under a stack (which happens all the time). Also, it’s a nice visual indicator of the loss condition: as long as any of the markings are visible, you’re still in the game. Once you can’t see them, it’s over. As far as the design of the markings go, I’m thinking some small bees with dotted lines marking their flight paths, but maybe that’d be tacky. I’m gonna bootleg modify my Queen tiles with yellow electrical tape & see how it feels. Thoughts?
The concept is actually a good one. Having a way to immediately recognize the Queen under a stack is a good idea. But what I understand about production, the cost to do it would be prohibitive from a publisher's standpoint. It might be something for BoardSpace or BoardGameArena to implement, although both sites have an easy way to look at what is under a stack.
Fantastic game! Great to see large number of techniques used in a single game. That's why I love Hive so much. But I have question for you Randy, about Francesco's move at 11:10. What if instead of jumping with G, he covered your P with beetle? That would limit your placement spots even further (you would have inner hive placement spot, but you would give control to Francesco where to break the ring), your P would be neutralized and his B is in a position to take a kill shot. I wonder how the game would develop from that point on.
At 7:54, why does the white beetle need to be concerned with the black mosquito going on top of the hive? The black mosquito is frozen by the "one hive" rule.
Great game! I haven't thought it through, but I'm wondering why Francesco didn't go for the win instead of spawning bG1 (at 6:57)? He had a simple count of 5 while Randy had a simple count of 6 (I think).
Thanks Cody, as soon as I have some time, I will review this and look a little closer. Thanks for watching and commenting. I look forward to you joining me on some live broadcasts during the upcoming tournament!
This was a great game. I had to watch it a couple of times to unpack everything because of the complexity, but that's one of the things I liked about it. One question. At 11:50 you mentioned that the black mosquito threatens a kill spot. Assuming a ring was formed at one of the white queen's kill spots, is the black mosquito able to move as you've drawn in 1 move? The reason I ask is that I thought that with beetle movement this would take 2 moves.
There was a small editing error at that point. The arrow is designed to show the White Beetle attacking the Kill Spot, AFTER it had moved forward and covered the the Black Mosquito.
Wauw. what an awesome game and really helpful to see all the terms used in practice. Also thanks for the pronouncing of Z as "Zed" instead of "Zea", I really do appreciate it
I am not sure how can you even say in the middle of the game who is going to win. you can definitely say who you might think is in the winning position at the moment, but win. No. it all depends on your opponent's next move. I have just started playing this game and I love it. It feels not as complicated and time consuming as chess even though I've played chess only a couple of times in a decade. Watching this game tells me one thing, I have yet to learn a lot about it.
In Classic Hive, with no expansions, White has a small advantage. Add the Mosquito and the advantage increases. Add the Mosquito and the Ladybug and White has a significant advantage. But in Tournament Hive, with all three expansions, there is very little advantage with White.
When the Pillbug was added as an expansion in 2013, it changed the game completely (for the better!). With the Ladybug and Mosquito expansions, the first player gained an enormous advantage. The Pillbug has put the game back into balance. The tradeoff has been that the Pillbug becomes the center of attention in the hive. If your Pillbug is placed adjacent to your Queen, then as soon as the 5th spot around your Queen is occupied, the Pillbug rescues her by moving her out of danger. Your opponent must start the attack anew. Neutralizing the Pillbug means that you have done something to stop the opposing Pillbug from rescuing the Queen. Once the Pillbug has been neutralized, then your attack can continue and hopefully succeed!

It's great to see the terms from the lexicon used in example in a game. It really helps cement the concepts. Also, a very fun game to watch!

17:16 why droping the mosquito to the ant's side and then the beetle to the remaining spot isn't the way to go here?

Seems like every game we look at is one where Randy played first…
I when more often when playing White... maybe that is why. 😀
Hi, are you of an opinion that white has a big advantage in hive??
In Classic Hive, with no expansions, White has a small advantage.

Add the Mosquito and the Ladybug and White has a significant advantage.
But in Tournament Hive, with all three expansions, there is very little advantage with White.
I did it! I defeated my gf!!!
Hi I'd like to ask what exactly 'neutralising the pillbug' means?
When the Pillbug was added as an expansion in 2013, it changed the game completely (for the better!).
With the Ladybug and Mosquito expansions, the first player gained an enormous advantage. The Pillbug has put the game back into balance. The tradeoff has been that the Pillbug becomes the center of attention in the hive. @@PlayHiveLikeaChampion Thank you for the detailed explanation, I completely understand now!
I don't understand how you are a master when you yourself say that you have no chance. I feel like I could beat you
Why didn't you just use the beetle to make a ring around the queen early?
Frasco from a youtube account😂😂
