Was the grasshopper jump at 1:22 a legal move? I thought they could only hop in the direction of one of their edges, not one of their corners.
The Black Mosquito used the power of the adjacent Pillbug to move the Grasshopper. It could not, on its own, make that move.
@@PlayHiveLikeaChampion Thank you! I am still getting used to the pillbug! Love your channel
@@edwardfuller1071 Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thanks Randy and Frasco!
you are very welcome!
What a slugfest
a game worthy of a world championship finals!
I massacred a position that was probably winning, or certainly a significant advantage for black, and then Patrik does what he does best and started grinding me down in the endgame :) I was exhausted by the end xD
@@benharris3285 he can do that to you!
How did the bee jumped above masqutoo? I though she only walks one 1:52
The mosquito copied the pillbugs powers, and threw the queen over there
There, is a game on Minecraft Bedrock, called ''The Hive''
It can't possibly be as good as 'Hive, The Boardless Game'!
Woah hold on... was I the 1000th Discord member?
it is hard to identify exactly because people join and leave... but you were very close!
@@PlayHiveLikeaChampion Oh that's right, I might have been bumped around from people leaving. But hey, at the time of filming I'm #1000 in the list! I'll take that minor claim to fame, now preserved in video form!
@@RDon40 Congratulations!!!!
Randy will you be uploading the last gold medal matches without commentary? :)
yes
I really have not been impressed with csigee against Jewdoka.
i agree... there is some discussion about dropping the Bronze Medal match. What do you think?
Are there any other ways to defend against beetles ? I just end up spawning to defend the whole time against beetles and then get overwhelmed by spending them all to pin and then a grasshopper comes in to finish me off
If you watch games from the top-level players, you will see that they have an understanding of tempo. They know when to allow a Beetle to climb up and attack, winning the race to victory.
My wife is always beetle bombing and i cant win. Can you make a video showing how to defend against this ?
okay i will work on it
3:35 why is this spawn point disabled? there's no black pieces
That spot is legal for a spawn point, but not smart. If White spawns a bug, it creates a ring. Black will most likely break the ring by moving the Ladybug.
@@PlayHiveLikeaChampion oh i see now, still new to hive, thank you!!
@@UnclePockets you are welcome
I'm rooting for HappyKiwi. Anyone that can beat Jewdoka and Quodlibet in the same tournament deserves the win. I would like to see csigeee win the bronze. In order to beat Jewdoka the games would be amazing to watch.
i am planning on streaming all games (schedule and health permitting)
This is one of the first videos I've found the solution Nice to see you posting videos I need to start playing Hive again Also these are great little puzzles for the shorts format, would love to see more
thanks... i should do more of these
Patrick for the win 🎉❤
Thanks for commenting... On my livestream for game 1 - HappyKiwi was named the favorite by 13 of the 16 who voted.
Thanks for your time and your engagement for this beautiful game.
you are welcome thanks for watching and commenting
At move 25 the white mosquito is moved. How can that be possible since it was only touching the black mosquito??
It was actually turn 24... which was Black's move. The Black Mosquito, using the power of the adjacent Pillbug, moved the White Mosquito.
Oh thanks a lot now I get it
@@antasatibal 👍
This abstract game is so underrated! I play occasionaly, always a good mind battle! Thanks for posting these professional matches on YT.
It is only underrated by those who don't play a lot. The rest of us love it!
A response to Ben Harris regarding the time controls: The approach I'm familiar with is having a move cap. In checkers, if a game goes 25 moves without a win or piece getting captured, then it ends in a draw. I'm not saying this is appropriate for Hive, but it's a solution on the table.
There has been a lot of discussion about this. In chess, for example, there is the Fifty-Move-Rule, which states that either player can claim a draw if there has been no piece captured or no pawn move (either of which would fundamentally change the position on the board) within 50 moves. But in Hive, with no piece capture, a move such as this would be very difficult to define. Please propose the rule definition, either here (or better yet on Discord discord.gg/k3gq5sxC)
Beautiful.
The quality of the game play in this year's tournament has been at a new level. Both semi-final matches went into tiebreaks.
The Spider really doesn't bother me. A piece that moves exactly n spaces is always going to be trickier to consider on a hexagonal board than on a rectangular board. I'm curious how much of the Spider's bad reputation is from digital players that have become accustomed to being explicitly shown valid moves during play.
That is an interesting thought. Playing on-line ensures that one does not make an illegal Spider move. But I don't think that this adds to player's complaints about the Spider. I try to ignore these complaints! The Spider is the Spider, no more, no less. PS - It pleases me to win with a Spider move.
Thank you for the videos. In my opinion, the problem with the spider in general is it doesn’t do anything unique. Every other bug feels “special” whereas the spider can just move 3 spaces. Wish it were designed in a way to bring something interesting to Hive.
It does, though! It's the only piece that has to move exactly some number of spaces, so it has unique strategies like reindexing that don't apply to any other bugs!
I actually don’t think this spider is that great objectively, or at least not the way that white followed it up. It’s basically just a waste of tempo since I wanted to play my pillbug anyway. I think probably attacking immediately with the mosquito was a bit adventurous and I should have just played another ant instead and black is completely fine
thanks for commenting Ben... and congratulations on your advancement into the Finals!
you are correct the spiders were not the key to winning, but this game shows two ways to use spiders! and i disagree... Grasshoppers > Spiders
I guess I'm biased because I've read "Like a Champion" several times, but the way you discuss Hive in chess-like language successfully dissuaded me from thinking of some pieces as inherently better than others. I'm sure even the greatest chess players of all time had an opportunity at some point to outsmart brilliant opponents with an overlooked pawn. "The right man in the right place can make all the difference in the world..."
@@superking208 Interesting comment! Thank You! You are, of course, correct. There are situations where any specific piece may be more valuable than the other pieces because this piece can deliver the win and that piece cannot. But, in general, it is recognized that the Spider is the weakest. For example, There is nothing that the Spider can do that an Ant cannot also do. (This brings up the 'Isn't the Spider a weak Ant' argument (which I hate to hear)).
@@PlayHiveLikeaChampion Thank you for responding, I'm a bit starstruck!
@@superking208 Your definition of 'Star' is obviously quite liberal. Thanks for the kind words!
Spiders > Grasshoppers. Anyway I don't think in this game the spider was the key of the win, black was good until move 23.
You are correct in that the spider moves were not instrumental to the victory. I wanted to show how spiders can be used in various ways. And I disagree completely with the 'Spiders > Grasshoppers' evaluation. There are more cases where a Grasshopper can do something that a Spider cannot, then the other way around. PS - keep up the good work on your RUclips channel! www.youtube.com/@OrdepCubik
The legendary squeeze. Kiwi’s pillbug placement was so creative and unexpected
HappyKiwi is the best at squeeze/shutout endgame! And yes, his pillbug placement was unexpected
Thanks for posting this video.

It's one thing to shut out your opponent. It's another to maintain that shutout until you get the win. Bravo. 👏
Thanks Randy! So interesting.

Move 141 bG to wB/ Finishes things a little cleaner. But overall, what an eye popper! Congrats Happykiwi!
HappyKiwi also missed a win on turn 88. My guess is that he was intent on the shutout and not looking for a quicker win.
Nice game
it was wasn't it
Well played.
congrats to HappyKiwi for winning as Black... can he upset the World Champion?
@@PlayHiveLikeaChampionyes Happy Kiwi has this
Throughout the game black had a flexible position with the pocket, which also gives mobility to the queen when occupied. A move that would give problems to black would be 17 wM \bQ. If 18 bL -wL, blacks pocket is destroyed, blacks queen is stuck, and white can aim to free up his beetle/mosquito to keep attacking. If black resists 17 by playing 18 bA /bP (looking to beetle recover) white can force the queen to move with 19 wA bQ/, and no matter where she goes white has good prospects
thanks for the inciteful comment. i agree. Alex had some chances.
Always love the streams! Thanks!!!
thanks for the encouragement... if you watch live, please drop a comment
I appreciate these replay without commentary videos.
thanks... i am getting a little better and getting them produced quickly
I thought white could move the ant in between the black spider and black ant at the bottom, creating a ring and threatening to take the kill with the white beetle. I don't see a way for black to break the ring without allowing either the white ant or the white beetle to take the kill.
Actually maybe the black spider can move inside the ring and complicate things.
@@a1-h8 correct... White still will win but it will be more difficult
Have you done a video that explains : 1. Which are defending and attacking pieces and why. 2 The basic tactics followed by better and better tactics? I'd like to know because I'm a biginner and that's what beginners like me need to know and learn. Thanks
really fascinating grasshopper play, loved this game!
thanks for commenting.
At 23 white should anchor the mosquito with a spider, and then follow up with a beetle at Q-
yes that could work
White has a good setup with move 87. He can cash in the win with moving the beetle on the right on top of the queen, doing a pin replacement at the bottom, and then using that grasshopper to jump in
it took me a while to see what you mean... after wA3 bS2\ white follows with wG3 wA3- and wG3 -wA3
Black should play 12. bM -wQ to deny the pocket. White played well too
I think white has a very comfortable control game after that. The bM is basically wasted after that move
46. bQ -wG
Yep. Or even 48 drop last beetle, then next move bQ-wG. Lucky break for white…
yes black missed that
@@panonassociates i believe that you are correct. Black could have won.

that is SHOE notation (Standard Hive Opening Encyclopedia) - my goal is to make it easier to compare and study openings
Great game! Also I love the new soundtrack! Just noticed: shouldnt this be the second game?
thanks for your comment about the soundtrack no, this is game three
Amazing mosquito play.
White's use of the Ladybug/Mosquito/Beetle to free an Ant and Mosquito at the end was truly the work of a champion.
