Be sure to check out the other RAM Maintenance, Upgrade, and Performance videos on this channel! We are also working on project HellRAM and supercharging this 100k mile truck and documenting the full build on the channel 👍👍👍
I know I should my own research which I am.. but between a 2018 5.7 ram and a Tacoma trd same year. can you give me some insight as far as retaining value etc?
Got my ram at 140,000 miles used! I use it every single day for work and out of town trips and now it has 250,000 miles still running strong 💪🏾 mopar HEMI 🤠.
Did it have the normal tick? Mine has started doing it at around 168k miles, I’ve read a lot that the tick is normal and nothing to worry about and others say the engine is ready to go. Just curious how long I have till it’s going to need work.
@@dakotakelly9371 my 5.7 ticked bad since I got it at 117k miles and ended up being the spark plugs out of all things. Definitely was a relief considering I was thinking cam/ lifter problems.
I did get the "tick" early on but my dealer replaced the broken studs for "free" with a 300 dollar deductible. Somehow, we the people always get screwed. I complained about them telling me when I bought the truck that it had an unlimited power train warranty but they were gaffing me for something involved in the power train. His response was that anything "outside the block" was not power train. Oddly enough, very shortly after I made my initial comment, I was driving home from a GF's house one evening and the rear end locked up and the driveshaft snapped. Pretty gnarly event. My usual mechanic wanted nearly 4500-5K to repair with all new parts. Something about the rear end of 2009 and up being more expensive. Anyway, I called a buddy who works at a Dodge dealership parts counter and asked him for assistance in finding a lightly used rear end for my truck. He asked for the VIN and when I gave it he said, "Are you aware that there is a open recall on your truck for the pinion nut? Just tow it here and we'll fix everything for free." So I did. That was last September. Was very stoked to get a new rear end and drive shaft after 265K+ miles. They did recommend replacing the front wheel hubs as they were beat. I did that repair on my own with decent quality aftermarket hubs. Motor is still doing fine. I've performed every oil change on it, I use Valvoline full synthetic with one quart of Marvel substituted. Dumped one coil when accelerating hard one morning at @125K. Replaced it. No problems since then. I love my truck!
I've got a Durango with the 5.7 Hemi. Probably need to do the exhaust bolts cause it ticks when cold, but other than that it runs great. She's got plenty of power and makes our family happy.
Bought my first Ram in 2011. It's a 08 Ram 1500 Lone Star 5.7L V8. Bought it with less than 40K on it. Has about 180K on it now. No problems whatsoever. More than ample power, never failed to start. Love It ! Had Ford F-150s before and they're good trucks, but Ram really delivers.
@@el701viajesprivados8 just curious... right now this winter I'm getting an average of probably 11 1/2 miles to the gallon. I've seen as low as 7.6 miles to the gallon when I was pulling my trailer. I have never seen 15 miles to the gallon with it. Only 88,000 miles on the truck
I bought my 05 Dodge Ram Hemi-Sport back in 07. I have never had anything major go wrong with it over the last 14 years. Still starts and drives almost as good as when I bought it and I still really love it. I plan to buy a brand new Ram this year but will keep this truck and keep her going, she's been reliable.
I have a 08 4.7 Ram 1500 and it works great with 135000 miles on it. I changed the oil every 6000 miles...changed the transmission fluid every 60000 miles....upper plugs ever 30000 miles and lower plugs at 120000 miles. I also changed the rear end fluid every 30000 miles. Runs like brand new. I bought a 17 Ram 1500 5.7 Hemi and it has only 5000 miles but I was so impressed by my 08 I had to buy another Ram.
Thats awesome congrats on the new truck!!! When you get a chance check out the other RAM content on the channel! We have a ton of maintenance, upgrades, and performance related content for our trucks on this channel and also are documenting the full supercharger build on this truck 😎
As a former dodge tech, I must correct you on the cam and lifters. It is not year specific, however I have found it to be mds specific.(to my knowledge the first gen 5.7s did not suffer from this issue. The only 5.7s I ever saw that had cam problems were police chargers and oil field work trucks. #1 cause of failure is extended periods of idle time. Idling for extended periods of time causes the roller on the tappet to seize, therefore making it slowly eat down into the cam lobe, effectively shortening valve travel, which in most cases shows up as a misfire. This is not something that happens over night. Typically found in cylinders 3,4,5 and sometimes 6. Some other things that you did not mention are that the early 5.7s were prone to idler pulley failures and water pump failures. Also, some newer generation 5.7s were plagued by bad timing chain guides. There is a recall for this. The timing chain and guides both get replaced. Some like to break exhaust manifold bolts, seems to depend on driving habits/conditions. Otherwise, good vid bud. 👍
lee hancock I guess it depends on who you ask really, but I believe they produce sufficient oil pressure, (ive never seen one that didnt carry excellent oil pressure) if not there would be problems showing up in the rest of the valve train. For instance the hydraulic tappets in the 5.7 are kind of finicky and want lots of pressure. Some people think it has something to do with the force the tappets are exerting on the roller, meaning at idle there is so much force being applied that over a long period of time idling it's just too much for the oil flow to handle, and some think it is to do with the extra resistance to the oil flow as the multiple displacement system is run on oil pressure. Either way I believe what happens is when the engine idles for an extended period of time, (and we're talking an like an hour or more at a time), oil pressure is diminished just enough right at the roller and nowhere else to cause enough heat build up between the roller and the cam lobe (for whichever reason it may be) that the oil that is making it there is not enough to overcome the heat. Therefore if the idle were raised to say 1000 or 1200 rpm when idling for a long time, I doint believe it would ever be an issue. If your worried about this happening to your engine, don't. As long as your daily routine doesn't involve letting it warm up for ridiculous amounts of time from dead cold, (which can cause a few other nasty problems over time), or letting it sit around and idle for hours on end, your fine. That, and the other big thing to remember with an mds hemi is to ALWAYS KEEP CLEAN OIL IN IT!!! So many people go 7,000, 10,000 miles or more between oil changes and then when the engine no longer can deactivate 4 cylinders on the highway from sludged up oil passages, somehow it's the engines fault... let's all keep in mind here that extended periods of idle time isn't good for any engine.
Unburnt Fuel Police Chargers getting new engines due to lifter roller failures at less then 100,000 km. even when using Mobil 1 synthetic oil at 5000 km. Interval. Still an issue with 2016 and 2017 models. 3.6 l is even worse, every Police cruiser needed multiple engine repairs before end of warranty so we stopped buying 3.6 l. It was very rare for a Ford 4.6 to have an engine problem other then a water pump.
benjaminwayneb Fortunatley for me I never had to have much interaction with the 3.6, so I'm no help there, but I've never replaced an engine for tappet roller seizure. I can certainly understand why, shavings introduced into the oil, but I've never had one come back with an issue. I also never had one that was ran for long once the customer noticed an issue. Clean oil multiple oil changes later, and nothing in the oil filters when cut open. Run them too long with a seized roller maybe?
First of all, thank you for taking some of your time to make this video for many of us that are interested in this information. I'm in the process of buying a 2005 Dodge Ram with the 5.7 Hemi engine and because of your video you have given me confidence purchase this truck. The engine sounds so strong and it runs so evenly but your video has pushed me over the top. I own a 2001 Dodge Durango with the 4.7 v8 engine and I've owned it for 6 years and I have never even changed a spark plug in it. It runs so good set my 19 year old son has demanded I not get rid of it because he wants it. Again, thank you for making this video and taking your time because I truly believe time is a precious commodity that we never get back so this was time well spent. I wish you well you and your family.
@BoostedMotorsports Thanks for posting this 👍 I just bought a 2012 RAM 1500 5.7 L Hemi with almost 80,000 miles on it. It's good to know that these engines can last a good long time. I test drove 2019 trucks from other brands and you can definitely feel the boost in performance when you drive the Hemi.
I have a 2008 Jeep Commander with 208k miles on the 5.7 Hemi. It runs great...no problems so far. I'm the original owner. I used to tow a 24 foot travel trailer with it. Best motor I have ever owned. It doesn't use any oil between changes if I run high mileage motor oil. It uses a quart every 1500 miles or so if I run full synthetic.
i was told going into the truck market they all have their issues buy the one that you love because you are going to be putting money into it to fix it eventually.. i bought my used 2015 R/T ram and never looked back. I Don't use the MDS i always turn it off i believe this will help it out. just passed 94,000kms no issues yet. I strongly believe its how you treat your engine, i always run the best oil, always keep up with maintenance, also i always give er plenty of time to warm up before i drive it. alot of people neglect to do all these things and bitch when the truck breaks down or has issues. so many negative people i talked to that knew nothing about trucks.. RAM this RAM that. 1 year later all the shit talkers with there 5.0s.. ECO BOOMS... Vortecs etc have been in the shop for recalls.. repairs.. not me.. i don't drive the shit out of mine. Treat her right and she will treat you right.
Yeah I agree! All brands have their own issues and there will always be that hardcore guy that has something to say about a different brand lol. Even some of the comments in here are funny. Yes there were some problems with the cam in some of the 5.7L engines but think about how many of these engines are out there. People only come to the internet to complain when they have a problem but not usually when they are running great so you have to take that into consideration when deciding if its an issue to be worried about. 👍
The ‘08 5.7 in my Jeep just hit 125k miles, still runs smooth as butter with pennzoil platinum high mileage. It’s so smooth sitting at a stop light I can barely tell it’s running if it wasn’t for the exhaust 😆
I use my 14 commercially taking Airstreams Ohio to west coast & other TTs & boats back. Love the Ecodiesel & 8 speed 400,000 miles run all day every day like a big truck. Ecodiesel pushed out head gasket at 371.
The 5.7L is a beast that needs to be woken up out of factory. It's tough as nails! Congrats on the channel growth man, you deserve it. Keep up the great work
Damn you have that many miles on your EcoDiesel? I was debating getting one but wasn't sure about the reliability. Any other issues or just that headgasket at 371k?
Thanks brother! I agree these engines are pretty fun once you start doing some mods! Thanks again for the support! Trying to get to at least your level of subscribers. We should maybe do a collab, might help introduce some of our mopar fam to eachothers channels.
Bought my 2004 5.7 start of this last summer with 200 thousand miles put on about 60 thousand at which pulling 18ft trailer healing block wood equalling around 14000lb pounds and other then fuel pump it's Ben best vehicle iv ever owned love my Dodge all around it husls ass just needs a locking diff lol
I just bought a 2017 Ram 1500 5.7 Limited, it has 113,200 miles on her and she still feels like a new truck, nice and tight with gobs of power. It even still looks like a new truck. It's delmonico red pearl coat, I love the Ram boxes to. I've had 7 Ram truck in my years from 1996, 1999, 2001, 2007, 2016, 2017 and 2019. I have NEVER had any problems with any of them. They have been REALLY GREAT trucks.
Good to hear these are really dependable. I just bought a 2009 2500 with a 5.7 Hemi and 175,000 miles. I was really impressed with it when I drove it at the dealer. I was originally there to look at a used Ford, but they sold it before I got there. I am so glad i go this truck instead. Drove it on a 400 mile road trip today and still freaking love it!
@@cristianlopez-st7zg The engine is doing really good, except for the gas mileage. I had issues off the bat with the fuel pump, which the dealer said they replaced but clearly didn't. After their "replacement" I started having issues with the check valve and would have to turn the key on/off a bunch of times to get the truck to start. I replaced the pump again myself and have not had a problem since. I did have an exhaust manifold crack, but warranty fixed that too. Engine itself has been solid.
I’m looking to get the same truck 14’ hoping that she will do me good, I would rather get a diesel but I won’t work enough for it to make sense to purchase
Just this week I went and bought a 2012 1500 sport with the 5.7L. Clean truck from Colorado with 218k, I bought it here in ND. Clean carfax and from everything I could find it's all original. No rust anywhere and spent a hour looking the truck over before a test drive. I have put a few miles on it now and I am very happy with it. I have done mechanical work for the last 14 yrs so I figured anything that breaks I could fix. My first truck was a 68 f100 and then a 94 f250 that I had forever. If this ram is half as good to me as my 94 I will easily get 400k on the odometer. I dont beat my vehicles but, I do not baby them either. Maintenance is top priority, bumper to bumper.
I have an 05 1500 and a 2016 1500, love these trucks! The 16 is my daily driver, but i still use the 05 once a week or so, it just hit 255,000 miles and still going strong!
08 slt quad cab blue metallic 210kmil now and runs like new with zero issues, I've had 6 rams now and all of them have been really reliable for me, I keep up with my maintenance very well and I believe that makes any vehicle run forever without issues.
Thats awesome! Glad to hear your truck is running strong too! Let me know what you think of the other RAM videos on this channel when you get a chance too! 😎
2014 with 23K and i had to change #4 lifter and cam shaft due to lifter grinding down on the cam.. i bought the truck that way from a tow auction for 9k.. and fixed with $1300...now running like a champ... great channel!
Hell yeah thats awesome Tony glad to hear your truck is still running strong too! Let me know what you think of the other RAM and Dodge videos on the channel too when you get a chance!
My 07 has 153,000,, still running great,,,hope it sees 247,000 miles !!!,,trucks in Kentucky now,, originally came from Massachusetts so it does have some rust though !!
This is great to hear. My father gave me his old 05 durango with the hemi a few years ago with around 170,000 miles on it and it's just about to hit 200k soon. Him and I have never had any problem with it with the exception to something minor with the manifold. Still running strong towing every now and then.
Thats awesome brother! My 2014 has 107k miles on it now and I'm about to slap a procharger on it and test the limits of it! Should be a fun setup and we'll see how long she holds! Full build will be shown on the channel! 😁
2013 5.7 got it at 42k and its at 81.5k right now. Low miles, but perfect truck. Had it for 5 years so far :) Upgraded the shocks to Rancho Quik Lift adjustable and it eliminated all body roll and feels amazing.
I have have owned a 2001, 2008 and a 2014 Ram 1500 5.7 hemi and had no engine or transmission problems. Ram has come a long way in quality, performance and reliability even since my first 2001.
I bought my 3rd gen, 2005 Hemi 1500 SLT and it has 156,000 miles and it’s still going strong. I just changed my water pump today 4/14/18.... and I love it. I’m selling mine and getting a getting a 2016 Laramie fully load with 5.7 Hemi and I can’t wait. I bought my 05 new and have done 98% of all the maintenance on it.
Thats awesome! Glad you've had a pretty good experience too! I've had great luck so far with these trucks too! When you get a chance check out some of the other RAM DIY and upgrade videos on the channel! Would love to hear your feedback on those too and some pretty cool stuff you can do with your 2016 when you get it! 👍
That's awesome glad to hear you're liking the truck! Maybe I shouldn't complain about my MPG cause I'm getting the same as you with these 24s. I was getting some pretty insane MPG before I put the 24s from all the other mods I did. K&N intake and mechanical fan delete were great MPG mods.
I bought a new 2008 Ram 1500 SLT 4x4, quad cab w/8' foot bed w/5.7 Hemi engine. I currently have 197,000 miles, no engine, transmission or drivetrain issues! I did have to replace the pwr steering unit at three year interval (2011). Normal maintenance, i.e., tires, brakes, fluid changes (no leaks) per manual, (oil & filter change every 10,000 (full synthetic), tune-up at 80,000 & 160,000 (w/fuel rail clean) miles. High Test Fuel only. Not a week goes by that this truck does not see 100 mph. Love this truck ! Awaiting my new 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie 4x4 crew cab w/6'-4" bed w/5.7 Hemi !!
Hell yeah thats awesome! Let me know what you think of the other RAM videos on this channel too when you get a chance! We have the 600hp supercharged RAM build fully documented on here too 👍😎
I have a 2013 Dodge ram 1500 4 x 4 Bighorn it has 167350 miles on it and I’ve had it for almost 5 years. I plan on fixing her up and keeping this truck as long as I can. It’s been a good truck.
Thats awesome Alex glad to hear! Check out the other videos on this channel too when you get a chance! We have a lot of mopar content with the Viper and RAM 👍
We had an 03 RAM 1500 pre-MDS. Bought it in 07 with 127000 kms. Drove it till 3 years ago and sold it with 500,000 kms. Never touched the engine, only did manifolds once. My dad used it for his business and it had a 16' trailer behind it 6 days a week. After we sold it we found out it needed a trani at 520,000. He put a used trani in and the truck is still going today. Great truck and motor.
Thats awesome John! Glad your trucks have been running great for you too! Be sure to check out the other RAM videos on the channel when you get a chance! We have a lot of maintenance and upgrade videos or our trucks on the channel! 😁
Towing prevents the MDS from kicking in and although may have been hard could be responsible for saving your engine. Although other things can happen the MDS has been linked as the primary cause of lifter failure. In a nutshell when the MDS activates it diverts oil pressure to lockout the lifters and this pressurization cycle robs the still running lifters of oil pressure. This shouldn't affect performance but the problem is exacerbated by malfunctions in the mechanism (wear, breakage, bad sensors, etc.) I believe this affects all MDS engines 2006 - present. There are two ways to deactivate MDS without mods. 1) Turn on the tow/haul switch 2) Press the shifter up/down switch down one click so that a 6 appears on the instrument panel (or 8 if you have an 8 speed tranny) or if you have a center console shifter switch to manual. Whatever you have switch so that your highest gear number appears and the (ECO) light turns off. You will have to do this [every time] you shift the vehicle into drive. So as of the second half of 2019 FCA has fixed the problem (again), the jury is still out.
I think those methods only work on the 6 spd, but not the 8 spd. I've thought about deleting MDS but not sure how that would affect the warranty so I'm just crossing my fingers. 60k mi and no issues so far though.
I'm on my 3rd Ram now. First was a 2005 Hemi QC Slt sold it with 98k miles, 2nd was a 2008 Hemi QC Sport sold it with 75k miles. Now have a 2017 Hemi Crew Slt with 16k miles that is my daily driver. Mechanically my 2005 & 2008 were both great, I only got rid of them to trade up into nicer rams before 100k miles. My only complaint with them was the common rust area above the wheel wells on the bed. I am currently enjoying better mileage on the 2017 from the 8sp transmission that is netting me 20.1 mpg combined (80% highway, 20% city) which is up from 16mpg on the 2008. Great channel, very informative, keep the mods coming!
Great to hear you're having good luck with these trucks too brother! Also thanks for your support on the channel. I have a lot planned so should be fun to see how fast the truck ends up!
My brother has a 2012 sport with 230,000 miles and has done nothing to it. I have a 2014 ecodiesel Laramie with 112,000.miles and it still runs perfect.
Thats awesome! I was debating the EcoDiesel as well. They get unreal mileage but with all the emissions crap that the US requires on the diesels I wasn't sure I wanted to go down that road. 06 and older diesels don't have the crazy emissions equipment so I was debating getting a 2006 2500 Cummins but I don't think I could give up the nice interior and ride quality of the newer trucks.
BoostedMotorsports, Hello, I am the original owner of a 2005 Dodge Power Wagon 3/4 ton with a 5.7 liter Hemi. I currently have over 150,000 miles (I'll let you do the km conversion). My truck looks and runs like the day I drove it off of the lot back in '05. It is an exceptional truck. I did have to change one cracked exhaust manifold, motor mounts and one battery. So again, exceptional truck. It's seen it's share of mud, sand and one meter deep water. Years ago I had a hand-me-down, full size Dodge van with a 318cc engine. I sold it with 215,000 thousand miles and it still ran great. My latest purchase was a new 2016 Dodge Challenger Scat Pack with a shaker hood and a 6.4 hemi. I have high hopes for it as well. Bottom line: Mopar or no car. Thank you for your video and your patience. Best regards, Robert
Thats awesome Robert! Glad your having great luck with your vehicles as well! I've had pretty good luck with the brand for a bunch of vehicles right from a 00 Dakota to an SRT-4 to a SRT-10 Ram, 99 RAM 1500, 05 RAM 1500, 2009 RAM 1500, and now 14 RAM 1500. Plenty more videos on the way! 👍
I had a 2015 tradesman ram 1500 5.7L v8, put fifty thousand miles on it in two and a half years. Ran like a top. Just traded it in in January this year for a liquidated 2017 1500 Big Horn brand new. I have 8000 miles in it so far and I'm totally in love with it. The ONLY issue I have is the Eco drive when it drops off to 4 cylinders, I just don't like how it feels. No different than the 2015. Still, my Ram is my work truck, I work in a sand mine and I drive 40 minutes one way to work. Really decent gas mileage considering its a v8.
Thats awesome to hear they have been great trucks for you too! We are going to put this 2014 to the test when we strap the Procharger supercharger kit to it soon on the channel as see how she performs! Be sure to stick around as we continue to document the truck build! 😎
@@dylkelley We just traded in a 2013 Ram 1500 Quad cab for a 2019 Ram 1500 Crew Cab but our 2013 Ram only had 28,000 miles on it. We just wanted a nice new one, the engine was perfectly fine and 28,000 is really low mileage and it honestly drove like a dream (we originally paid about $38,000 for it). The person who got that truck got a really great truck at a very good price, the dealer was asking around $25,000 for it when he put it on the lot (I later looked up the VIN #). We took excellent care of that truck cause my husband (who is in his 50's) is a real fanatic when it comes to his vehicles. He washed it all of the time and waxed it religiously and changed all of the fluids religiously and kept it spotless. Before the 2013, we had a Dodge Dakota pickup truck which was okay (I wasn't in love with it but husband used it for occasional work situations) but when they changed the model design we bought the 2013 Ram. When the 2019 came out we could just not resist how nice the new ones are so we traded in the 2013 Ram but we could have easily kept it another 5 years or more with no problem. We traded in our 2013 Ram at Route 18 Dodge in East Brunswick, NJ which is right on Route 18. (I am kind of mad because I felt like we should have kept it longer). Good luck getting a great vehicle. Try to buy one that the owner took great care of.
You can buy a tuner to disable the mds. There's also kit you can purchase to remove the solenoids and lifters. I had to replace one solenoid because the stealership said I had one bad (they wanted $950). I did it in a day for 30 bucks. I was having electrical issues because they tried drilling out the broken manifold bolts. They screwed the head up and had to put a new one on. In and out of shop for 2 months. I replaced plugs one day and saw that they had forgot to tighten down the ground wire from pcm. Which is probably why the coil pack and solenoid went out due to electrical issues of ground not being tightened. Haven't had any issues since other than that. (Knock on wood) 130,000 miles and still runs like the day I bought it.
I just bought a 2004 Ram 1500 4WD Quad Cab with the 5.7 and I love it. Long-time Ford guy. Current truck is a Chevrolet 1500. My "new" Ram has 114K miles on it. Was owned by a family friend who had dementia and let the oil run about five quarts low(!) and still had the original spark plugs in it. 16 spark plugs and an O2 sensor later and it runs great. I am very impressed by this truck, to say the least. Think I'll keep it for awhile. This is the first of your videos I have watched. Just subscribed! Great info here.
Thanks for the support brother! I would look into a catch can if you plan to keep it for awhile. I thought it was BS but after putting one on my truck its pretty crazy how much junk it catches that would get spit back into the intake. Check out this vid I just made on what it caught on my truck. Ton of content on the way and we will be supercharging my 5.7 on the channel in the next couple months. Just picked up the kit the other day for it! ruclips.net/video/OIZaPA_VwNc/видео.html
My 2005, 5.7 Hemi Ram has over 285,000 miles and it’s still running strong. I was so impressed that I also own a 2015 Charger R/T with the 5.7 Hemi. 👍🏾
I had a 2014 5.7 hemi sport that had over 100,000 kms on it and it was a fantastic truck. Liked it so much I traded it in for a brand new 2017 hemi sport 5.7 last year which I currently have now and thanks to the channel is getting modded out really nice. Keep up the good work man these videos are super helpful for guys who enjoy some affordable and clean modifications.
Appreciate the positive feedback Jeff! Congrats on the new truck! I'll promise to keep doing my best to bring tasteful and affordable mods for the channel! Next video out tomorrow! Posting new content every other day!
I have a 2015 Ram 1500 with 150,000 km's, new manifold bolts and new manifold at 80,000 km's, very solid truck, very reliable, I work it very often, great information in this video :)
Thats great to hear Marc! Let me know what you think of the other RAM videos on the channel if you get a chance. Would love your feedback on those videos as well! 👍
If you want a long lasting Chrysler, maintain it very well. As a former Service Advisor who worked for Chrysler many years ago, Chrysler vehicles that are maintained very well, outlast the competition. The problem is that most Chrysler owners are clueless that they even they have to do an oil and oil filter change and then they wonder why their Chrysler breaks down.
BoostedMotorsports Agreed that there is some luck involved but that is just a small part of the pie. Luck is, when opportunity meets preparation. As an owner of many Chrysler vehicles since I got my license 30 years ago, the vast majority of the vehicles that me and my family have owned have been Chryslers. Due to the fact that we are meticulous when it comes to maintenance, our Chryslers have only given us many years of trouble free motoring. WHEN people start taking responsibility in their lives, that is when things work out for the better, although it may take awhile.
Kool Vid. I got a 2006 300c with the 5.7 Hemi Got 145000km. No smoke. No rattles. Starts straight up each and every time. Love the motor and great to hear you got so many km/miles outa your Hemi 5.7’s.
Thanks Trent! These engines definitely are pretty stout if taken care of! One thing you may want to look into is an oil catch can on these 5.7 engines. I didn't think it mattered too much until I tried one but check out this video I just posted where I show just how much crap it caught from going back into the engine! ruclips.net/video/OIZaPA_VwNc/видео.html
My first truck was a 2004 Dodge Ram with the 6v magnum engine it made it to 250k before it started smoking my new truck is a 2007 Dodge Ram 5.7 hemi and I love it
Hey man I love your channel, and I don’t know if you’ll still get a notification to this comment being that it’s 4 years old. But what I wanted to share is I have always been a Silverado guy , however I purchased my first Ram 2018 1500 CC RWD 5.7 Hemi exactly 15 months ago. The truck had 83K miles on it and I absolutely love everything about the truck. If I had any complaint at all it would only be I wish the truck had more braking power to stop. I’ve lowered it and I’ve done a lot of your modifications you’ve featured on this channel. I recently lowered it and purchased the Diablosport platinum tuner for it and it responded very well. Last week the truck rolled 100k miles and it displayed a fault code indicating misfire #8 cylinder it was also due a complete service. I purchased all new plugs and coils and the oil and filter for the oil change. When I pulled #8 plugs one (maybe both I can’t recall) plugs were tapped closed. So I couldn’t determine anything else damaged so I proceeded with gapping my new plugs and installed the rest, changed the oil and drove the truck for a couple of days without incident. After a couple hundred miles I pulled number 8 plugs out again to check if they were closed shut again however they were not in fact they were gapped at exactly .043 just like I gapped them a few days prior. So with all this being said my fiancé and I had a road trip planned to go to Charlotte NC from Charleston SC where we live. So for the trip I wanted to try out the MPG Booster tune pre installed with my Diablosport tuner, so fillled up with 87 , turned MDS on and my fiancé drove the next 2.25 hours to Charlotte without any issues and the truck averaging 24 MPG (interstate cruising speed of about 78 MPH @ 90 degrees F and the AC on blast). We got off the interstate and topped off with 93 so I put the 91 octane tune in the truck and switched drivers. Drove the truck approximately 2 miles from that gas station and got a fault code that number 8 misfired then as we went another mile it turned into multiple misfires, skipping, smoking (burning oil) knocking and raising hell with loss of power. So we finally limped it onto my brother in laws house about 10 miles from that gas station. Once we arrived and let the truck cool down I pulled number 8 plugs again with number 6, and number 1 just randomly checking all plugs were still set gapped as I set them. However on my Diablosport monitor I could see number 8 injector not firing constantly. And if the engine sat idle it would load up with oil and burn off a hell of a smoke cloud behind me so thick it was unbelievable. So I dumped the Royal purple 5w30 I had put in it earlier in the week and replaced it with the mobile one 5w20 I had been using prior to that particular oil servicing. So with work and adult lives we had to get back home and $1500 for a tow truck to carry my truck home , and Uhaul with NO car transporter nor dolly they said my truck would fit onto, I decided to try to limp it the 235 miles back home. So stopping to top off the oil every 30-40 miles and watching each cylinder (via injector pulse) on the monitor we dropped off cylinders 8,6,and 5 was shitting the bed when the truck finally just didn’t have anymore power to push itself up another hill about 90 miles from our home. Knocking at this point we arranged for an Uber home and sent for a wrecker to return my truck to my driveway (it should be home tomorrow) what do you suspect I am going to find when I tear this engine apart at just over 100K miles blown up under normal driving conditions? Any guesses, or suggestions? Did I mess up with the change of brand or viscosity oil during my oil change ? Why was number 8 plugs tapped closed, why were they gapped as they should be after I changed them? Any ideas would be helpful. I also would like to get your information on how to obtain one of your 80 mm throttle bodies for this same build or rebuild. Thanks in advance Rick Confused in Charleston
I'm a mechanic and have been for over 35 years. To be honest, everyone builds a pretty reliable vehicle these days. Except ford, they're still junk. Good thing they perfected the marketing part....
I agree that most of the vehicles are pretty reliable these days too! Check out the other videos on the channel when you get a chance! We have a lot of RAM and Mopar maintenance, upgrade and performance videos here! 👍
bdd1469 I was going to buy a 2004-2006 f 150. Tons for sale in my area for so cheap. I looked at reviews and everyone said they were junk so I tend to agree with you
219,000 miles on my 03 1500 ram. I bought it new and drive it like it’s stolen every day. Trans went out at 71,000 miles. I replaced it with a factory remanufactuerd trans and it’s been solid since then. It’s still a beast. 😎
@@ShadowBannedagain dam , that’s crazy. At least warranty got ya though right ? Do you go hard on it ?? Anything you can think that may have brought it up
Just bought a 04 ram 1500 5.7 hemi with 166k miles I love it. Definitely gonna sub for more info, being that this is my 1st pickup truck. Nice video and info keep em coming...
Thats awesome John glad to hear your engine is running strong too! If you get a chance check out the other RAM videos on the channel and let me know your feedback there too! Would love to get your thoughts on the other videos as well! 👍
My 5.7 has been great I am the original owner bought it 2014 from the dealer, ram 1500 express regularcab. I alway change oil early, use royal purple hps lukas full synthetic formula, put a oil filter relocation kit and can use a 30 8a filter from royal purple, have long tube headers mid pipe and a diablosport 93 tune. Going to put a 6.4 non mds cam, new lifters, high lift springs, chrome moly push rods, can't wait. I wanted a srt 10 truck, but fell in love with the express when I test drove it.
Ram trucks are pretty tough for the most part I had a 2014 with 250,000 miles on it with zero issues. I changed oil, coolant and front and rear differential fluids on it regularly.
Had my Ram since new in 2013. Been totally reliable in every way. I absolutely love this truck. I even managed 16mpg with the bed loaded and hauling a U-Haul car trailer carrying a 64 Fairlane from Philly to SE NC
Hell yeah thats awesome! When you get a chance be sure to check out the other RAM and Viper content on the channel! We are procharging the 2014 RAM and documenting the full build here too! 😎
Jody Janelle Hi there bought the same 2016 new that you have. Still warranty on it they fixed a couple broken exhaust bolts on it 50 k or about 30000 miles that was about 3 months ago. Have a 5.7 Hemi. The rest is good no problems. Good luck to you. Take care!
@@robert19271 thanks for tip. I added the extended bumper to bumper warranty for 5 years and 60k miles. One thing I just noticed, is that the fog lights wobble a bit over bumps...
Jody Janelle Hi buddy I bought the extra warranty total 5 years 100 thousand bumper to bumper. 0 deductible same as you.If your going to keep It I think it is worth it . I think you made wise discussion getting your extended warranty . And your fog light issue is crazy. I checked mine both are ok. Thanks again take care.
My 05 ram and 06 Durango have the 5.7. Ram has 190000 and Durango 105000 miles. Replaced belt tensioner and rear end on Ram. There is a recall on the ram rear end, but I paid out of pocket (didn’t know about recall). No oil leaks, I use penzoil conventional 5w-20.
Thanks for posting! I recently purchased 2009 Ram 1500 with 127,000 miles on the 5.7 Hemi. It is refreshing to know the hemi is a good solid motor. I traded a 2003 Dodge Dakota which had 233,000 miles on a 4.7 Magnum motor and was still running strong. Only reason I traded it was the front end needed alot of work and it was just starting to rust around one of the wheel wells.
Thanks for the feedback Bernie and congrats on the new truck! When you get a chance check out the other RAM content on the channel! We have a ton of maintenance, upgrades, and performance related content for our trucks on this channel and also are documenting the full supercharger build on this truck 😎
Shewww I wish it was only 2011, I had a 2016 Ram with the 5.7 had lifter failure at 7k miles, then again at 23k miles. I now have a 2016 Challenger with the 5.7 and have had a lifter failure at 52k miles. Love your videos bro. Keep em coming.
Yeah its luck of the draw it seems! I'm glad mine seemed ok even with all the torture from the supercharger we put on it but it was still solid even when we got rid of it 😎👍
Could you please tell me how much it will cost to fix all of this issues.. I'm I'm the process of buying a 2011 dodge ram hemi 155M for $5500 rebuilt tile but now I feel a bit insecure about it...
Thats awesome Darren glad to hear your truck is still running strong too! I had a 2000 Dakota as well that was super tough also! Be sure to check out the other Mopar content on the channel too when you get a chance!
Excellent engines, and believe it or not, one of the most economical V8s on the market (thanks 8HP, VVT, and MDS). There have been a small number of 5.7s out there with lifters that seize and eat into the cam, causing a very expensive repair. And first gens had valves that would pop loose and grenade the engine. Other than that, a VERY solid engine. With FCA installing them in Chargers, Challengers, RAM, Grand Cherokees, and Durangos, it has to be reliable.
Yeah I agree with you! People only usually come to the internet when they have issues with there engine or vehicle so the problem looks exaggerated when really the odds are pretty small for it to occur.
@Boosted2k : not THAT small of an issue, I bought my 2013 used in Oct 2015 with 52k mi. I'm in the states. My truck is a Canadian manufactured. I bought an extended warranty thank God. Dodge America would not cover anything. My warranty co covered the cam lifter problem. Yep, my truck @ 69,900mi had the motor replaced. Started seeing all the misfire signs and then the terrible obvious tapping from a top end lifter knock. Dodge wanted to rebuild top-end my warranty company said hell no, and they found me a salvage motor with 19k mi. Took dealership 90days to sort it out between my warranty co and Dodge!!!! At any rate, I love the truck. It's a 1500 Quad Cab Express Tradesmen but no cargo boxes in the bed. It's got a nice deep bed, just over 6' it rides and drives very tight and I love that. Also really like the coil spring rear end. Ford's 150 just way too soft feeling for me in a truck. (I've rented them a lot) This Ram just feels and looks sporty. New motor now has 50k mi on it and 100k my on the truck & tranny. I cannot stand the 6spd 25yrd old trans!!! It is worthless. Well, 5th & 6th gear anyway. Unless you're on the flats, unloaded, with a tail wind, those gears are worthless. Truck has ECO too but it can't stay in ECO but for a second like downhill only! I don't understand why Ram did that. Redesign the Hemi and new trans for 2013 and throw some of your left over old shit in with the new motor!!!! I read that all the express models got the old 6spd trans. It revs up too high before shifting, shifts way too late and never shifts on time. It also can't handle the pressure the Hemi can out on it. Solenoids just release occasionally without shifting !!!! I can't wait to upgrade to a 2014 or newer. Your '14 Sport looks very sharp.
Had the Hemi tick on my ‘07. Limped home about five miles from the dealership after I bought it with about 150K miles. They swapped the entire block to avoid any Lemon Law problems. Been a champ ever since. Block didn’t look brand new, so I have no idea what kind of wear it had previously. Passes everything but the gas station.
I totally agree the 5.7 is a great motor. For any of u guys looking in to getting a ford DO NOT get a eco boost the turbos on them always crap out because they are working way to hard for that tiny little V6 motor. Get the 5.0 V8 it is made by coyote and they are a very good motor.
They are not motors, they are engines, motors require an electric power source, the motors in cars are windshield wiper motors, electric window motors, starter motors, electric seat motors, etc etc etc.
@@daviddowling9830 What is a Motor mount? I guess I should stop putting Motor oil in my engine too. Why do they call it a Motorcycle? Why so serious? Lol
I had the cam and lifters go on my '12 Ram 5.7 right at 123,000 miles. It started as a misfire in Cylinder #3 that i couldn't figure out. The Dodge dealer told me it was gonna cost over $5k in repairs, so I traded it in. I now have a '17 Ram with the 5.7 liter Hemi engine and it has been great so far.
Damn sounds like you Dodged that bullet! (no pun intended) Glad you are enjoying the new truck though Michael! Boosted2k Yes i didn't have much of a choice lol. It was either fix it or trade it. I didn't have $5k to pull out of my ass so i traded it in even though i didn't want to at first. This new truck is great so far, and i now have an extended warranty incase it happens again lol. I will definitely check out your other videos, and i plan on doing some upgrades in the future. @@chopvtec I had to replace the camshaft 3k never buying a ram again did all the regular maintenance
I love my truck!
i have 340.000 miles on my hemi, original engine on my 03 ram. its 2019 now.

Is your 03 dodge gas or diesel
Does it have the tick?
I've got a Durango with the 5.7 Hemi. Probably need to do the exhaust bolts cause it ticks when cold, but other than that it runs great. She's got plenty of power and makes our family happy.
Robert Zucchari he said he has a hemi that means it’s a gas.

Dr. Kaufmann stfu
Good info!
Why does the roller not like idling?? Oil flow too low at idle?
lee hancock I guess it depends on who you ask really, but I believe they produce sufficient oil pressure, (ive never seen one that didnt carry excellent oil pressure) if not there would be problems showing up in the rest of the valve train.
It was very rare for a Ford
4.6 to have an engine problem other then a water pump.
benjaminwayneb Fortunatley for me I never had to have much interaction with the 3.6, so I'm no help there, but I've never replaced an engine for tappet roller seizure.

@@hassiri sounds like I need to do a oil change now then cause I have around 3000 miles left to do one according to my dash
How is it doing now?
@@cristianlopez-st7zg The engine is doing really good, except for the gas mileage. I had issues off the bat with the fuel pump, which the dealer said they replaced but clearly didn't. After their "replacement" I started having issues with the check valve and would have to turn the key on/off a bunch of times to get the truck to start. I replaced the pump again myself and have not had a problem since. I did have an exhaust manifold crack, but warranty fixed that too. Engine itself has been solid.
@@cristianlopez-st7zg And it's just shy of 195k now.
I’ve got a 2013 ram slt 1500 and have 150,000 miles and that damn thing runs just like the day I bought it
Thats awesome Patty! Glad to hear your truck is running strong still too! 👌
I have an 05 1500 and a 2016 1500, love these trucks! The 16 is my daily driver, but i still use the 05 once a week or so, it just hit 255,000 miles and still going strong!
Good to hear I just bought a 2012 Ram with 74,000 miles on it.
Me too last may. 2 door
the 5.7 is a great engine!
2014 with 23K and i had to change #4 lifter and cam shaft due to lifter grinding down on the cam.. i bought the truck that way from a tow auction for 9k.. and fixed with $1300...now running like a champ... great channel!
Wow I guess it worked out in your favor then! Thanks again for the support brother, plenty more ram mods and content on the way! 🤙

Had it for 5 years so far :)
Upgraded the shocks to Rancho Quik Lift adjustable and it eliminated all body roll and feels amazing.
I have have owned a 2001, 2008 and a 2014 Ram 1500 5.7 hemi and had no engine or transmission problems. Ram has come a long way in quality, performance and reliability even since my first 2001.
I have a 2013 with a 170,000 miles still running good
I had my cam replaced at 150,000 miles. 188 now and everything is great. Also I went 170thousand miles before my first break job.

Own a 17 Laramie crew cab avg. 16.8 mpg driving about 70 % city and 30% Hwy with the 8 speed trans. Love it so far!
Love your content man keep it up.
Wow I am averaging 10.5 with an 8 speed.

Wish I had a newer RAM with the 8 speed. I'm lucky to get 16.8 with 90% highway driving with my 5 speed auto. 18 is the very best I ever see.
1) Turn on the tow/haul switch
2) Press the shifter up/down switch down one click so that a 6 appears on the instrument panel (or 8 if you have an 8 speed tranny) or if you have a center console shifter switch to manual.
Dam bro 230k is a lot for a 2012
Putting in those miles! Love seeing these trucks get worked and holding up! 👍
Do you still have that eco diesel!? And if so how many miles now?? And also how many miles you think you’ll get out of that puppy??!!
What mileage are you seeing man? Looking to get into the same year
@@dylkelley We just traded in a 2013 Ram 1500 Quad cab for a 2019 Ram 1500 Crew Cab but our 2013 Ram only had 28,000 miles on it.

I agree that these engines definitely last a long time if maintained correctly! There is always some luck involved too 😎
BoostedMotorsports
Agreed that there is some luck involved but that is just a small part of the pie.
Kool Vid.
I got a 2006 300c with the 5.7 Hemi
Got 145000km. No smoke.

@Brennan Martini great so far....no, I haven’t had any kind of exhaust issues at 26k.
Thanks in advance
Rick Confused in Charleston
I'm a mechanic and have been for over 35 years. To be honest, everyone builds a pretty reliable vehicle these days. Except ford, they're still junk. Good thing they perfected the marketing part....
I agree that most of the vehicles are pretty reliable these days too! Check out the other videos on the channel when you get a chance! We have a lot of RAM and Mopar maintenance, upgrade and performance videos here! 👍
bdd1469 I was going to buy a 2004-2006 f 150. Tons for sale in my area for so cheap. I looked at reviews and everyone said they were junk so I tend to agree with you
10-4 on the ford junk. 4.6 and 5.4. geeez. each year they try a new engine.
@@BoostedMotorsports you couldn't of said it any better! Thanks man!
Ford.....are absolutely junk!!!!
219,000 miles on my 03 1500 ram. I bought it new and drive it like it’s stolen every day. Trans went out at 71,000 miles. I replaced it with a factory remanufactuerd trans and it’s been solid since then. It’s still a beast. 😎
My 5.7 Hemi was awesome, right up to the point where my lifters chewed up my cam. 103k miles.
@@ShadowBannedagain dam , that’s crazy. At least warranty got ya though right ? Do you go hard on it ?? Anything you can think that may have brought it up

I have the 4.7 magnum with 300k with no problem it’s all in how you take care of them.
Hell ya Brian glad yours is running great too! 👍
I have a 2014 Ram, getting ready to turn over 50,000 miles. So I’m glad to hear this! Love my truck!
I have a 2017 5.7 Ram Lonestar Crew Cab. With 100,252 miles, no issues at all. Love my truck
Had my Ram since new in 2013. Been totally reliable in every way. I absolutely love this truck. I even managed 16mpg with the bed loaded and hauling a U-Haul car trailer carrying a 64 Fairlane from Philly to SE NC
Hell yeah thats awesome!!
I'm calling bullshit on a 5.7 getting 16mpg while towing. No way, no how, no never. Not calling you a liar, but maybe just really bad at math.
Speaking the truth about these Ram trucks. I have a 2004 with 253212 Miles. It’s still a beast also.
Glad yours is running strong too! They definitely last a long time! Check out my other RAM videos too when you get a chance! 😁
214,000 miles on my 09 running strong!
Thats what im talking about! 🤘🤘🤘
I like RAM presentations. Very casual and not too technical. My Cummins Diesel engine is now over 17 years strong! I bought my RAM brand new in 2003.
Just out of curiosity, I see a lot of comments with high miles and still going strong. What type/brand of oil is everyone using in their rams??
Napa gold filter and Napa full synthetic oil made by valvoline.
Castrol synthetic. Been using it for 40 years and never an engine failure.
just bought a 2019 ram classic 5.7 with 8 speed trans. 3 years old and has 52k on it roughly 35 thousand miles. love it so far.
I have a 250,000 on my 04 Durango 5.7 never had an issue car still runs like a charm love the engine so much I have 4 other hemi cars haha
Hell yeah thats awesome! When you get a chance be sure to check out the other RAM and Viper content on the channel! We are procharging the 2014 RAM and documenting the full build here too! 😎
BoostedMotorsports awesome.!! Great channel👌👌
good to have back-ups. lol
dufus good point
same thing here. broken connecting rod on start up one day. 106k on it. many other ppl on numerous forums have stated the same thing. you got lucky.
I just bought a 2016 big horn with 36k on it. Got it for $26,000. They threw in the navigation, new tires and spray in bed liner. Love it...
My 05 has 348,000 and still going strong.had to put a rear in at at 275,000 other then that all Original
Damn thats what I'm talking about! These damn trucks go forever. They really aren't lying in the commercials when they say longest lasting trucks lol
My o4 ram 1500 5.7 l hemi just broke 333,333 miles on it and still runs like new !!!! And I still enjoy blowing the doors off of those Ford Raptors!!!
Okie Organics the older 5.7 are rock solid.i have a 10 and a 12 no real problems yet but don't think I will have as much luck out of them.
Thats awesome Okie! Glad yours is holding up great too! 👍
About to hit 250k miles on my 06 5.7, still runs great. Pretty much original everything...
Thats awesome Jared! Glad yours is holding up strong too! Thanks for your feedback too! 👍
2013 Charger RT with the 5.7 Hemi, 128,000 miles and nothing but maintenance and a couple non-engine related recalls.
Hell yeah thats awesome!!! Check out the other mopar vids on this channel too when you get a chance and let me know what you think 😎
I have a 2003 Dakota with 307k miles on it. Love IT!!! Strong engine! Heat sensitive.
Boosted2k Absolutely! Love your truck, by the way!
Damn good thing you had that warranty Nitro! Sorry about the bad luck you've had so far but glad you're up and running again! 👍
Definitely hard to pass by a gas station in a HEMI 😂
I totally agree the 5.7 is a great motor. For any of u guys looking in to getting a ford DO NOT get a eco boost the turbos on them always crap out because they are working way to hard for that tiny little V6 motor. Get the 5.0 V8 it is made by coyote and they are a very good motor.
lol they are not made by coyote, coyote is the code name for them.. Fox vs Coyote bro
If you get a chance check out the other maintenance and upgrade videos we have on the channel. We have done a lot of bulb upgrades and inexpensive parts for our trucks that you would probably enjoy! 👍
Thanks!
