I just bought this at Lowe's for 239. Quality is so bad, but on par with how they are now made. I actually like the noise of Ac's. They drown out neighbors noise.

I have a basic Midea 5000 btu that's built exactly like this. Styrofoam, Identical mesh filter, R32 refrigerant, Fan that splashes water on the condenser. I wouldn't be surprised if Midea builds the GE version they're so identical. Mine has basic mechanical knobs which I like and It was also $140 at Walmart so I can't complain and I just use it as a back up AC.

I have the same unit but a little older. Mines been a beast. This is the 4th texas summer that I've used it full time and it keeps going. I keep the water plug closed, apparently it cools the compressor by splashing water on it. The one time i left it open, the ac started acting weird, so I have kept it closed since.

My 6000btu GE has done a fair job the past 3 years. i've cleaned it once. I need an 8000btu i think and one that will take more humidity out of the air. IDK what type of refrigerant my GE uses and i forget the model number. It worries me to try and buy a new unit this year. I do not have faith that it will be up to snuff. Thinking of going back to LG this time round.

@@zenozer0themechanicalchann720 Thanks, it's on the way.. Say, how do you set yours on days when it's stuffy in the room but outside the air is really cool? in the past, my ac's don't seem to work well, like in the fall.
I may rig up a 'suck it in' fan on the window sill, next to the ac, that i can run on those days - unless i'm not setting the ac correctly? Thanks

@@zenozer0themechanicalchann720 Thanks. Since i ordered an 8000btu, which is somewhat overkill for my space, running the fan on low will be possible - the smaller ones i have had to run on high to get any air. So yes, low setting and maybe i'll even do the eco mode thing....assuming the 8K one is as powerful as i'm imagining :)

Time to get a Midea U-shaped unit. GE is not as good as it used to be. My midea U-shaped unit has R32 but it is freezing cold despite that. Also the condensing coil is beat down and still has airflow.
As for the drain holes there's none of that. I have had mine for a year or two and it still has not rusted out somehow. They probably used aluminum and not steel for the chassis. It's built cheaply and has many components that will probably fail someday, but today isn't that day, and hopefully it won't fail in a long time. I will keep you updated.

Thanks for the suggestion. But I really don’t like inverter units. I like the 60hz hum of a normal compressor. And an inverter unit has thousands of things to fail and the lowest btu midea has is 8000 btu witch is to large for my room.thanks

@@zenozer0themechanicalchann720 In that case you would want Midea's manual control units. They do exist, and they are reliable (but I don't have one so I can't say for sure.)

@@zenozer0themechanicalchann720 I get Frigidaire window air conditioners too. Right now I have a 12,000 btu in the front window. They are good, reliable, and made in America. And they are within the price range of any of the other brands made overseas. If I buy a refrigerator, it will probably be a Frigidaire too.

  • @FrederickTheAnon14W

It blows me away how the quality has decreased in such a short amount of time. My family has a Frigidaire 6000 BTU unit from 2016 and whilst it uses styrofoam we've never had an issue out of it and it actually has quite a few metal parts and is not all plastic. The circular saw-like vents to direct the air direction flow are also much better and do not appear to be as flimsy as the ones on yours. The filter is also extremely easy to remove and/or change out on ours.

I always add a drain hole if one doesn't exist. The main issue I have with modern units is the compressor will never turn on if the outside temp is below the set point of the A/C. It's normal to want to run an A/C here if it's 50 outside due to high humidity.
