We love Steven Wilson, and when we gave him that TubeMeister 5 a couple of years ago never could we have imagined it'd have ended up helping define the sound of his new record! This has made our year :) Cheers for the great interview as usual guys, and see you at GuitCon!
Just saw him in Milwaukee a couple of nights ago and he pulled that very amp out for one number. No effects, just the amp and the tele, chugging away on the guitar right after he turned it on to prove that it was a tube amp; "wait for it...wait for it..." ker-chung!!!
I know Steven Wilson says that he's not a "guitar player" per se (he says he's more of a writer/producer), but to me he's one of the most inspiring guitar players out there. The tones and the atmospheres he creates with his guitar to serve his songs are just incredible.
Dude! I would have happily watched a three hour version of this video. Steven's music is one of the main reasons I picked up guitar, and probably part of why I own PRS guitars. Now I find myself wanting a Tele, strangely enough!
As long as you get the proper nutrients. Eating a balanced diet full of what the body needs is more important than where the proteins come from, I believe.
Love that he makes such great tones off a "cheap Mexican tele." You don't have to spend $2-3000 on a guitar to get play guitar. Even something people may consider a starter guitar can be great with practice.
I'll remember this one for a long time. Steven Wilson's music is probably the best thing around right now (and has been for years), so to have him give up a few secrets is magic.
Steven Wilson, in my opinion, is the greatest *current* pop/rock artist. He's second to none. His musicality, lyrics, creative process, performances, and most of all... artistic bravery... never shy to evolve and always true to his vision.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, Dan & Mick and everyone else who is involved with That Pedal Show... for getting one of my favourite artists (again) on the show! I can't say more, I'm out of words, but I know it's been a long time since I clicked on a video this fast.
Great!! This guy busts out with the Mexican Tele and a practice amp and blows minds. Luckily we can all blame it on his amazing pedalboard and continue on with our lives. :-)
Must admit, after he finished playing that sustained note I was expecting him to come out with "listen to the sustain on that... you can go away away and have a bite to eat"
Ashley Mann Creativity also comes with technique! Ofcourse, not everyone who's technical is creative, but it's certainly a lot easier to be creative and to find ways to express yourself when your a technical player.
Steven Wilson? Yes! Punk rock Joe Strummer Tele? YES! Name-check for Andy Partridge? Y E S!!!!! Please, please, please persuade Mr Andy P onto the show. & Dave Gregory. & Colin Moulding. That'd just be ... XTC ... for this TPS fan.
If it's a question of getting the right cake-based incentive to entice Mr Partridge onto the show, I'd gladly provide ... though sounds like there's possibly just a bit more to it. Shame! Will happily listen to you interviewing a solo Dave Gregory - might prove a tad easier to arrange.
In 2013/2014 I didn't know SW and his music. I saw the cover of "The raven..." on Amazon randomly, and ordered the CD because the picture looked interesting. What a luck, I really like his music!
WTF? How does he look so young? He looks like he's aging backwards. I met him like... 10 years ago and he looks the same. If this was filmed in 2017 he was nearly 50 here? This must be some sort of conspiracy.
I wasn't familiar with Steven Wilson until seeking his music out after a number of references here on TPS. Purchased tickets on a whim and just saw him live this past Saturday in NYC. As a fellow guitarist it was truly INSPIRATIONAL! His tone was amazing; clarity, cut, and just rocking! Big THANK YOU to TPS for all that you do, keep up the long videos that don't skim on context and thank you for the into to Stevens music!!
Such a fantastic interview, Dan. I've been listening to Steven's music for years and years and it is *still* exciting to hear him talk about his processes, sounds, and songs. Now a fellow Tele user, too. Satiated.
This was so cool - thanks Dan and SW! I've been a massive SW fan since the early 2000's and have spent a lot of time following his guitar sounds (amongst many other facets of his career) the entire time.
One of the true musical geniuses of our time. I dig all of his incarnations, but Porcupine Tree just scratches my itch like nothing else he's involved in. Not comparing him to Jack White musically, but for comparison - it's like Jack White just works best for me in The Dead Weather.
STEVEN!! I was wondering if you guys would ever have him on the show and I'm so happy you did! By far my favorite current recording artist, and one of my favorite artists of all time.
+That Pedal Show Also I do have to say I'm glad you were able to convince him to switch to the Mini Vent, much better than his Option 5 which I personally never thought was that great compared to some of the other Leslie pedals out now.
Guthrie Govan is an absolute Animal on Guitar. Every time I see him play, he is just Flawless, Melodic, with Blazing Speed & Precision. Just purchased Steven Wilson track: Permanating = Great Track. Fantastic. Love it. Thanks for turning me on to this artist.
Rafi Kirder was it Mick said he wouldn't be able to touch any of those pedals now in another episode? 😂 (or was that some other RUclips video I've got confused with)
Also I'm also surprised he doesn't have any barefoot buttons or the equivalent that custompedalboards.co.uk do. Playing barefoot with the standard buttons I always miss and it goes between my toes!
Thank you so much for this discovery guys ! I'm in tears after listening to "Refuge" by Steve.. You are so touching in your way of loving and sharing sound and artists and this is big ! Just thank you !!!
Wow! Feels like I've been living under a rock for several years. First you made me addicted to Joey Landreth and now this! Totalt B l o w n A w a y by Steven (and Ninet)! Thx for another fantastic episode!
Absolutely fascinating on a second watch ... First time I made the dumb mistake of not listening because of the little H|&K Amp -- All I can say is I was such an idiot! ... Lovely textures and sound ... Thank you
Weird- I've been raving about my Hughes and Kettner 18watt combo since the day I bought it and one of my main guitars is my stock American Tele, which I also rave about. The combination of those two is fantastic.
Back in 2002/3 I was studying my degree and a college friend wanted to go see Porcupine Tree. I wasn't all that aware of the material but I agreed to go along. I knew all the London Venues, which is amusing as I can't remember where it was now (Astoria maybe?) otherwise it was such a memorable evening. The quality of sound and the band were really great. I enjoyed the whole set and it's a night I'll never forget. I collect all the SW remasters of the classic Prog bands. I've been catching up with old Rig Rundown's, which is what led me to watching this.
Awesome interview! Love Steven Wilson and his music, particularly To The Bone. Also thanks to TPS for introducing me to Steven via the video you did on his board for the Hand. Cannot. Erase. tour. As you are interested in getting more people on the show, is Ed O'Brien a possibility considering you have made a number of boards for Ed? A massive fan of Radiohead and would be really interested to hear about Ed's style as he is often a player more involved in the textures of Radiohead than the riffs and motifs.
I hope someones got a video of Dan and Mick blubbing at Stevens Concert. Perhaps it was because they just hit 100,000 subs or Steven switched on the D&M drive ( or both! ).
Two questions/suggestions @thatpedalshow - Have you all done any videos on A) Speakers - I know this is a pain in the read end to change speakers in and out, but they do make those handy clips for front loading speaker cabs so you can change them in a hurry - see HardTruckers cabs here in the states - would also love to hear your thoughts on front vs rear loaded cabs and open/closed back which has been touched on by every clown on youtube, but you guys are the only people I'm beginning to trust that can speak on gear with authority =). B) Wet/Dry Setups - | I've seen you guys touch on this, and I know you have a video on using multiple amps, but I would love some more in depth info on this. After watching last weeks episode, I'm lucky I didn't blow my amps up by running a stereo out from a strymon pedal into the send of my boogie mark iii's FX loop, then the return of that FX loop into another amp. Nothing happened except some weird noises, but I havent messed with the FX loop on the boogie so maybe it has some output levels I need to adjust. Do you need a power amp between the return of the FX loop and the 2nd amp (I believe you all did this to have trem on just the victory), or should I have had the send of the loop going to the 2nd amp (as I type this that is making more sense..). I have no experience with just using one of the FX loops jacks. To accomplish a wet/dry or wet/dry/wet setup do you have to use FX loops of the amps?
Seems like a very nice guy. Wasn't crazy about the tone from that little practice amp however. It had an AM radio quality about it. The Victory sounded much better. And rule number one when showing off your pedal board on the web....no bare feet. Maybe if this was with Orianthi it would be tolerable. Dan and Mick, love the show and my new D&M drive.
Hey guys, looks like Steven has the Cali compressor set up outside the loops (in a Loopy 2?) and activated by remote switch #4. Can you tell us where/how you have that loop set up (where in the chain and how is it routed from the Cinco? I'd like to do something similar with my compressor (not take up one of the main loops but allow it to be switchable). Thanks!!
The EHX Crayon does that wirey open punchy gain like the H&K, for anyone looking to replicate. On an open platform like a clean American voiced combo, the Crayon will nail that low gain aggressive thing.
steven wilson is my favorite sound creator on the guitar. i love his writing and To The Bone is quickly becoming my favorite album of his. this guy is an inspiration machine. thank you @thatpedalshow for having him on.
Sorry to say I don't know Steve Wilson. Is it because I don't live in the UK our am I just old??. These artist interviews and discussion of what to do with all this gear are gold. Thanks.
All the sounds are good especially the cleaner, warmer sounds. The Cali76 is a cool box. Got warmth and jangle but not too much. Maybe the Tele has something to do with it.
Interesting guy. I used to share a house with someone who loved Porcupine Tree but although I wasn't offended by it the band's music left me utterly cold. Sadly the same goes for what I've heard of Steven Wilson's solo material. If anyone wants to recommend something that might change my mind please feel free. Good show as always guys.
Any plans for an All You Need Is Fuzz shirt that isn't slim fit? I love that design, but slim fit always feels like a childrens' shirt on me, and if I go a size up it becomes a weird tunic thing
I don't think it was mentioned in the video (and if it was I apologize) but was the signal path of the board described? If it is mentioned among the 500+ comments can someone point me to it? Thanks...
Steven Wilson, on a TELE! This is gold! Big time fan of Steven, great to see him getting more widespread recognition these days.
Pauuuulll of course you are the type of dude to watch this epic show, considering you are epic yourself
Um... he's only one of the most influential prog guitarists/singers/songwriters in the world?
And here is the great orange tele guy watching another great show! Cool
And what a beautiful Telecaster it is.
Remembering when he used to play a red stratocaster in the 90's
We love Steven Wilson, and when we gave him that TubeMeister 5 a couple of years ago never could we have imagined it'd have ended up helping define the sound of his new record! This has made our year :) Cheers for the great interview as usual guys, and see you at GuitCon!
+Hughes & Kettner Awesomeness. We shall see you there! Looking forward to catching up. :0)
But, can't find the damn amp for sale anywhere, especially in DK. Can you help? :(
Just saw him in Milwaukee a couple of nights ago and he pulled that very amp out for one number. No effects, just the amp and the tele, chugging away on the guitar right after he turned it on to prove that it was a tube amp; "wait for it...wait for it..." ker-chung!!!
Love my Tubemeister 5 head and 110 - now I just need a MIM Tele and Steven's creative mind ... :)
"Shplang." A perfect description of the Telecaster sound in one word. Also, the name of my first child....
+Geoff Davis hahahahah
Dang, he is almost 50? Looks like 30
That is because he's not married...
@@sergioelgueda7298 Hey Steven got married this year and problably he colors his hair..... just saying
They stay out of the sun in England!
@@brittoncarpentry we don't have a choice 😂
I can't believe y'all got Steven Wilson on the show! This is why this is my favorite RUclips channel!
+Victor Campos yep, was awesome to have him on :)
I know Steven Wilson says that he's not a "guitar player" per se (he says he's more of a writer/producer), but to me he's one of the most inspiring guitar players out there. The tones and the atmospheres he creates with his guitar to serve his songs are just incredible.
+83draconian No arguments here. Much awesomeness indeed!
excellent excellent rythm playing.
he's terrific. was just rewatching the "arriving somewhere but not here" live... his solos are great.
Steven Fucking Wilson! Fastest like I've ever clicked.
Dan's Tele conversion of all guitarists has begun!
He must be saving Mick for last.
Hand Cannot Erase is a life changing album. Such a strong record.
OMG! THE Steven Wilson! You guys are super awesome you got him on the show!
this is their second pass with him. check out daniel's channel...he was on a few years ago during the Raven tour.
Yeah, I know Dan featured him before on video from SW's tour but having him in the room for an interview is a different level of achievement ;)
Excellent point.
No fucking way, I swear to god I've never clicked on a video so fast in my life. Let's go!
Dude! I would have happily watched a three hour version of this video. Steven's music is one of the main reasons I picked up guitar, and probably part of why I own PRS guitars. Now I find myself wanting a Tele, strangely enough!
+Trizza84 Hahaha!!!! Excellent. We say this without fear: every guitar player alive should own a Telecaster. Good luck!
Favorite Artist + Favorite Show = Pure Orgasmic Happiness!!!
My thoughts exactly!
*happy draconian sounds
Looking damn good for a man about to turn 50
Ollie King Lives off his passion, doesn't have kids. Doesn't look like the type of guy who abuses drugs either. (I have kids. It takes its toll)
holy shit he looks like he is in the late 30's
As long as you get the proper nutrients. Eating a balanced diet full of what the body needs is more important than where the proteins come from, I believe.
oh yes, just look at steve howe for a proof of that LOL
O man if you guys could get Guthrie Govan or Dave Kilminster in. I would watch that every day till the end of time.
Love that he makes such great tones off a "cheap Mexican tele." You don't have to spend $2-3000 on a guitar to get play guitar. Even something people may consider a starter guitar can be great with practice.
+Eddie Block Whatever inspires you - that's the most important thing of all. Cheers Eddie.
"Shplang!"
- Steven Wilson
21:07 "I just think some people are musical... and I guess I'm one of those people." -Steven Wilson
I like the confidence.
He's always been extremely confident. I honestly think it can be a bit off putting, but his chops and music back it up.
DomSchu I actually find him rather humble given his undeniable genius.
It's confidence without the arrogance.
If he's not musical by now, he never will be, eh? ;)
He frequently says he is the worst musician on the stage at his concerts. He is phenomenally good at writing a song, though.
When can we expect an update on Dave Kilminster's board now he's back with Roger?
I'll remember this one for a long time. Steven Wilson's music is probably the best thing around right now (and has been for years), so to have him give up a few secrets is magic.
+E.G. Systems He's great isn't he? Not remotely rock star-y but 100 per cent committed artist. We love him. :0)
Too short of an episode lol what am I supposed to do for the rest of the day?! Actually work?!
+OdetoDan Good luck with that. We did some today as well. Boring! Like real work, not guitar work. ;0)
Steven Wilson, in my opinion, is the greatest *current* pop/rock artist. He's second to none. His musicality, lyrics, creative process, performances, and most of all... artistic bravery... never shy to evolve and always true to his vision.

+Snydermans Music It's all in the patch cables...
Probably the 10th time I'm watching this video. SW is god. Daniel is demigod.
Bring GUTHRIE GOVAN here please!!!
I mean this with the utmost respect but Steven sounds just like Nigel Tufnel when he speaks
also a bit of younger Pete Townsend
Ben Fentem he goes to eleven! !
You say that like it's a bad thing.
17:23
Must admit, after he finished playing that sustained note I was expecting him to come out with "listen to the sustain on that... you can go away away and have a bite to eat"
Steven Wilson. This has already made my day and I haven't watched it yet.
I love the way a no-theory guy like Steven Wilson commands guys like Guthrie and Alex Hutchings :) Creativity always beats technique
Ashley Mann Creativity also comes with technique! Ofcourse, not everyone who's technical is creative, but it's certainly a lot easier to be creative and to find ways to express yourself when your a technical player.
Better technique = better tools, definitely. But ideas are a different thing. I think they come, like Steven said, from listening.
Ashley Mann yup! Listening is the best tool ever.
Steven Wilson is amazing, but let's be fair. No-one commands Guthrie :) he just happens to be perfect in every situation.
He doesn't command them, he hires them for their incredible abilities - creative and otherwise.
Damn Alex Hutchings will be touring with Steven, can't wait to see that !
Dan?!?!? WE LOVE YOU!
Steven Wilson? Yes! Punk rock Joe Strummer Tele? YES! Name-check for Andy Partridge? Y E S!!!!!
Please, please, please persuade Mr Andy P onto the show. & Dave Gregory. & Colin Moulding. That'd just be ... XTC ... for this TPS fan.

How do I get my Mexican tele to look like that? Orbital sander and put the hardware in the ocean for 6 weeks?
Eran Montiel clearly you stick it in a corner for 10 years
jason matheson egg on my face haha
Eran Montiel I'm pretty sure that's a Joe Strummer signature Tele which come looking like that
Ethan Barker Google supports that. Thanks!
+Ethan Barker Indeed it is!
Nice king Crimson shirt Steven, that live album is my favorite.

Such a fantastic interview, Dan. I've been listening to Steven's music for years and years and it is *still* exciting to hear him talk about his processes, sounds, and songs. Now a fellow Tele user, too.
Satiated.
The TREE in the house! ! Wubalubadubdub!! Get Ty Tabor next and will think I died and went to the pearly gates!! Billy Gibbons reference! !

"If You Live Long Enough, Strange Things Happen" - Steven Wilson.
It's Christmas in September!! The Pedal Show episode I would have requested if I thought it was even possible. So psyched you would cover this!!
Ok good I'm not the only one that does that when showing the band the chords hahaha.
Okay, that's one idol. Still gonna need a Vennart episode.
+Tuval Pollack Workin on it.... :0)
Tuval Pollack - Yes!

I demand to know why I have never heard of this guy before! Thanks for bringing him to my attention via my love of pedalboard porn.
Marvelous. The legend Steven Wilson meets the legends at TPS. Only 30 mins tho 😭

Best quote from the interview "The songs are more songs" HAHAH WTF does that mean XD Anyways this is a great interview thingy.
So, what I got from the whole studio-sound vs. live-sound, it's that: less is more.
... But how can less be more? More is more!
+Niels Beier YES! A little bit of Yngwie always cheers us up!
Incredible, as always! Try to bring Steve Rothery, he sounds incredible as well!
New album is BEAUTIFUL, what a legend. Props to Gavin Harrison as well, monster of a drummer. Hell, Barbieri is incredible too, what a band.
"Over the last 30 or so years."

why he doesnt wear shoes?
Thank you so much for this discovery guys !

+Johan Björklund That's great to hear Johan. So much cool stuff out there, but Steven is definitely a bit special. Thanks for watching!
Thanks Dan for explaining what you felt with 'Routine'! Spot on!!
+MrEstpas71 yep, such an overwhelming experience
Where's the other half of the episode gents?
Just kidding, great instalment.
Mr Wilson! That's an amazing tshirt?
Holy shit, Alex Hutchings is the new touring guitar guy? He is freaking amazing.

Perfect pitch isn't that halpful in a musical context btw, it even can cause problems. Don't know why everyone thinks it's a necessary ability
Thanks...
Just downloaded "To The Bone" from iTunes, thanks for the heads up, keep up the good shows
+e chicago Cool! Thanks on behalf of Steven.
How'd you get Steven Wilson lol
Give him free shit?
Never heard of him, just listened to Refuge........... good lord!
I don't think he knows much about Bruce Springsteen, who is the absolute master of writing character pieces
Justifying the need for two POGs while there's a POG2 on the shelf behind. Ha!
