  • To the Bone is the fifth studio album by English recording artist Steven Wilson, released on 18 August 2017 on Caroline International. It was recorded two-and-a-half years after the release of Hand. Cannot. Erase. (2015), and one year after his mini-album, 4½ (2016). According to Wilson, the album is inspired by the progressive pop records of his youth, such as Peter Gabriel's So, Kate Bush's Hounds of Love, Talk Talk's The Colour of Spring, and Tears for Fears' The Seeds of Love.
In late 2016, Wilson announced that he had returned to the studio to record his fifth album. During the first months of 2017, Wilson released two work-in-progress studio clips to his RUclips channel. On 5 January, he released a clip of "Pariah" and on 12 February, he released a clip of "To the Bone", featuring harmonica player Mark Feltham. Wilson continued to tease various images and small album details until 8 May when he revealed the track listing on his Instagram account and released the single "Pariah". The following day on his Instagram, he announced the album and an upcoming 2018 European tour, and the following week, on 18 May, a music video was released for "Pariah". Four further singles have been released to date: "The Same Asylum As Before", "Song of I", "Permanating" and "Refuge". A video for "Permanating" featuring a Bollywood dance troupe was released online on 21 July. A video for "Nowhere Now" was released on 19 September.

Mark Feltham- what a vibe! Incredible. Probably the best part of the movie for me.

SW turned me on to Ninet Tayeb, who has become one of my favorite artist. Ranks with Kate, Sinead, Siouxie, Natalie Merchant, Francoise Hardy, Sandy Denny for me. And Tayeb turned me on to Red Band and a series called Where Heroes Fly. I love when that happens.

This video has so much valuable content to a small recording studio. I turn it on and let it play while doing setup/cleaning/organizing duties in the studio. The inspiration in this video is immeasurable. Sold me on buying the record too, and so happy I did, it's amazing! Thank you for posting!

Good god, it is really nice to see professional and well seasoned musicians struggling with all of the stuff us regular folk struggle with (just got to the part in the video where they are recording vocals). I recorded a demo of a song on my phone the other day, sat down and wrote and composed the entire thing in one take with my phone recorder. I have been trying to actually record the damn thing for the last 2 days now and I can NOT recapture what my phone recording captured. Something about it being candid and in the moment was perfect, and I get too in my head when I am trying to ACTUALLY record it for real. It's wild how much overthinking something can absolutely ruin it haha.

They said that 'Detonation' is a killer track. For me is the best one of the album, but its the track with less atention I guess for its duration, so sad honestly... Rlly amazing, one of my fav Steven Wilson songs ever.

I really enjoyed Steven's work with Porcupine Tree and I have closely followed his solo career. Seen him twice with Raven and HCE and looking forward to a TTB concert in April 2018. This was an enlightening look at his music making process. There are very few true 'sonic artists' like him in the world. Well done SW and keep it up!

Love Paul's idea to quiet Detonation's voice in the beggining, ''Like is he was in his bedroom and he didn't want anybody to hear it''.

i wonder which mixer did they use for the recording. The first few times i heard the songs i found them to be more on the treble side of things, not having the warmth of HCE or The Raven...i'm intrigued

I meant, i know Steven "mixed it" , in which desk they mixed was my doubt and after a long search i've found out that Paul Stacey has an Helios desk, which to my surprise sounded not so warm on this album. Weird stuff
