How I wish the world would have been ready for PT. Listening to the live shows with Steve, Colin, Gavin, Richard, and John never gets old and still gives me goosebumps today. It was such a magical communion of such artful talent. Like some of the 80's classics that did good but really took off decades later. I believe that Porcupine Tree's fan base will only continue to grow. I feel fortunate to be able to attend the Fear of a Blank Planet tour at a very small intimate venue in my home state. Spent the entire show leaning against the House Sound Booth. Hopefully someday we can all get to enjoy a reunion tour for all the Greatest Hits.

Arriving Somewhere is objectively one of the most underrated epics in rock history. What a fucking emotional and audible journey!!! Hearing Richard talk about his work on the programming in the intro is so genuine. It’s such an iconic intro to what I would call one of their best songs. Can’t wait for the 2024 Aussie tour 😬🤟

So nice to see and hear from Colin Edwin again. As much as I like Closure/ Continuation…. I really miss Colin’s bass and the interplay he had with the band.
I saw Porcupine Tree on the In Absentia Tour and I didn’t know their music well at the time…. But one thing that grabbed me was how well the band played different parts so well together. Colin was part of that magic and I hope the band brings him back for another album.

    • @kevinbreest7086
      @kevinbreest7086 Год назад +12

I totally agree. Having seen PT as well at the In Absentia Tour for the first time - it was like magic. Just the whole aura of Colin is missing - he always looked so happy and relaxed playing the songs.
Such a great band. Deadwing is my favourite album beside In Absentia. And both albums are in my all time favourite list.

Yes. I'm like most PT fans a big Steven Wilson fan.....and attribute to him the bigger part of the love for the music......but really, with Maitland leaving something was lost......with Colin leaving something was lost too. Barbieri I always said was the most important element after Steven because his soundscapes represent the best of my favourite PT tracks......and what sets it apart from other metal/rock proggy bands...the way it is done.
But yeah, I've adjusted to Gavin being the drummer, even if I actually prefer Maitland's sound.......but I'd really love if Colin eventually comes back.

Agreed! It doesn't get enough attention. At about 29:35 Steven says _"So one night we would be playing on a bunch of upturned beer crates in the corner of a bar in Syracuse [New York], ..."_ -- Hey, I was there! The band played an excellent show, but it was a crowded bar and I had the feeling they were kind of depressed about that. It was a *bar,* and at least 20% of the people would have been there even if there hadn't been any band playing. But the audience did seem to enjoy the show. Certainly I did!

Open Car is the second song i ever heard off of Deadwing after discovering Shallow by accident, it's one of favourites from P.T 's whole discography
such a simple song structure and tempo but the sound of everything blending together in the Mix creates this overwhelmingly blissful atmosphere and that Outro is a warm embrace
(wish they kept the bridge section from their live shows on the album version)

I’ve met a few musicians who have had an influence on me, or that I at least admired, and every time I tried to just keep my cool, treat them with respect and keep myself at arms length so I wouldn’t be one of “those” fans. I always said nothing more than, “Thank you for the music.” They seemed to appreciate that more than praising them as gods among men. So, since I doubt I’ll ever meet anyone from Porcupine Tree, thank you Steven, Gavin, Richard and Colin for the music. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Yes Steven I do believe your music will be immortal and not surprisingly crossed generations. I'm 54 now and started listening after hearing Absentia when it came out. First song I ever heard was Blackest Eyes. Around 2015 I was playing Deadwing in our work vehicle and a new guy had just started that day who is about 20 years younger than I. As soon as it started to play his eyes lit up and he looked at me and excitingly yelled, "You know Porcupine Tree"? Come to find out his father who is a Doctor who takes care of the elderly is a huge fan of PT and turned his son onto them. So ya, I think that you definitely have an accessible sound for the masses but in my opinion I think your biggest fans are audiophiles and practicing musicians that can really appreciate the talent on that stage. Myself being a drummer, Gavin of course is a masterclass and seriously lifted PT to another level.

When I was first getting into Porcupine Tree after the release of Fear of a Blank Planet, I found that the songs on Deadwing seemed like some of the most magical.
I literally downloaded their entire back catalogue and would listen on my commute or cig break, or wander through the local woods listening to it on shuffle, as a way to familiarise myself with the breadth of their work, quickly. That is not the way I would usually appreciate music, and in hindsight, it seems quite disrespectful to a band that is very much at home within the album format but I came to value those albums very dearly anyway.
The flow of the Deadwing album itself is really incredible, starting with the high energy tracks and more accessible songs, and becoming more chilled and blissful after the centrepiece, Arriving Somewhere. It really does remind me of the feeling I get after I watch a film that resonates with me.

When I try to describe PT to a new Non-Tree'd person, it's difficult. I do this: "Do you remember your mother stroking your forehead and hair when you were ill as a small child, blissfully feeling secure and loved? Well PT does this: In a jaggedly precise 7/4 heartbeat, a clap of thunder and hail storm suddenly peels against the window and all hell breaks loose for twenty seconds. Just as you think it will collapse the house, the hail slows to a soft rain. Now your mother resumes with her soft voice and reassures you into peaceful slumber, still stroking your hair and forehead. When you awake the next morning, she's left you, for how long you don't quite know. PT in a nutshell. OR The Spawn of Tool, Pink Floyd and Steve Morse.

I'm surprised by their own perception of Deadwing. I feel like it has aged the best out of all their albums and seems to be their most popular album on Spotify.

Deadwing is still the best album they made, and it's not even close for me.

I got started with PT on the In Absentia album. Deadwing was JUST as good and Fear of a Blank Planet was even better

How can they talk about the live version of Half-light and not even mention John Wesley's contibution to the performance?

I absolutely love "Revenant," and it should have been on Deadwing in my opinion. It's got this moody, spooky, creepy vibe to it that invokes Eric Draven and other revenants.
