I always come back to this documentary; not only i am an audio nerd but to see Mark Feltham's (harmonica) superb mood and so humbly appreciation of the music and moment, for Ninet's beautiful face and effortless performance on Pariah and Paul Stacey's so humble attitude and suddenly playing that untidy gilmourish solo, Steven Wilson's sound search on synths and also that black telecaster of his. I love this video production approach where they place us as a fly on the wall.
The fly on the wall cannot be overstated. People tend to be so performative on camera nowadays. Whether they want us to look at them and get a certain impression, or they think we want them to put up that façade, it gets to be a bit much. It’s nice to see people just doing their thing. It’s real. It’s truth.
I used to walk my dog to this, he was my shadow. We did everything together, like a child to me. He passed away and I haven’t listened to it since. It was too painful to listen to. That was a couple years ago. Watching this and hearing parts of these songs was quite emotional, brought me back in time. I also forgot how much I really loved this album…
How funny is to see all those musicians achieving incredible solos with the power to move me to tears and at the end they're like OK THAT WAS OK LET'S TRY ANOTHER ONE
Mark Feltham is the most underrated musicians ever. After hearing his playing on Talk Talk's Living In Another World, I looked him up on Wiki and came to realize he's played all of the harmonica parts I've ever heard in pop/rock music. Absolute legend.
While TTB didn’t resonate with me as much as I wanted it to, its so pleasing as a fan to see Steven do what he wants with no compromise. So glad I got to see him on this tour
Same with me, but if he only made Raven, I'd be happy with that. Prob one of the greatest albums ever recorded. I'm glad to hear that PT is coming back also! That'll be a great experience for sure.
An amazing documentary. Steve Wilson aside, the fact this studio had all of the vintage gear in working condition is crazy. People can buy anything but having it working in top notch condition is a feat alone. All of this gear is temperamental and needs constant attention to work properly. The sheer amount of vintage gear and microphones, effects is nuts, the echoplex is beautiful alone. Amazing documentary, thank you so much.
This goes to show his creative process. Something that curiously goes so much further than many artists these days. Also his inclusion of vintage instruments is priceless. (Only other band I know to have recovered an old electronic instrument in recent time would be Depeche Mode) Great doco. Really loved it.
SW sure does wear his influences on his sleeve and I love that… Floyd solo’s .. Talk Talk distorted harmonica, ABBA changes, TFF ambience … incredible record made with love and great taste..
Great documentary, it's always great to follow Steven when making a new album. I have to say, however, that studio is messier than my room, and my room always looks like it was a victim of an hurricane.
great! this documentary had a way of making me feel agitated with impatience to go and listen to the album. to hear parts being played/recorded and then going back to hear the album with further reverence and a deeper sense of apreciation of the work involved is exciting!
the recording process tbh is a real nightmare scenario for a lot of people believe it or not. Sounds fun recording an album don't it? Lol. Nah playing the album live is fun - writing it is fun. Recording it is a test of severe patience. Even more so when you have this massive amount of effects and also having so many sit in musicians come in to add to that. Every bit of perfection you put into the recording and everything you add to it then creates a pressure to replicate it. You could add all of these effects on the computer but the difference between the analog and digital signals is so unfortunately flawed in the tone they produce - it would be a lot easier to just autotune any note you don't get correct every time you hit record but then it's got the digital sort of effect to it that makes it too obvious. So you can easily go crazy trying to get something perfected out. And every session you are in there, well that's pushing back your ability to meet a scheduled tour which means managers and venues agitation bleeds into your anxiety already trying to make your record. Which basically means you have to be at a point in your financial worth where you can not have leave until its all done just to get rid of that feeling - essentially your never free to make music on your own terms until you have a certain level of success to be able to have the time to create and write and rewrite and record and perfect that recording without your ability to sustain your fan base being effected because you aren't touring or aren't playing new music. Some people, if forced through the recording process would rather just quit tbh. That's why a lot of bands fail, creative differences open up in the recording of those creations - can cause a lot of in fighting as each band member just tries to give the a song what the writer wants in it, and not what you might think may be better: which if your playing could be at any moment at any time when your ability to improvise says "Hey! Try this!" you have to be like * NO SHUT UP THE BASSIST WROTE THIS SONG AND THE GUITAR PARTS ARE HIS CALL TOO UNLESS HE TELLS ME HAVE AT IT!!* lol. you have this natural urge to create on the spot then stifled. That's frustrating, which is why the most bands only really have one major songwriter in the band and everyone else has to appreciate and love what they might want to change and not have to play the same way constantly. It's a balancing act for sure. It's a hell of a balancing act on the emotions as a guitar player of 18 years. Keeping it all fresh enough to not get frustrated or bored is also a difficulty if you don't write/record quickly as well. :3
OMG I'd love to record in that studio, all that chaos, amps, drums, keyboards and pedals everywhere are soooo inspirational! Most of you guys see a disorder, some of us see a place to be ourselves, comfortably, and being able to let the music flow...
Thanks for posting this!! It made me want to listen to the album again. I need to find live version to hear, would be cool if Wilson would remix this one , I just don't care for the mix on the album. too tight in you face, I don't know,....just doesn't let me feel like I can crank it up and get inside the mix... maybe my perspective will change with time . Some really tasteful playing and sounds... I will listen to anything this artist puts out.....
I love this album as much as his Prog Rock albums I don't see any problem in like both eras, also his Electronic songs are interesting. I'm not the typical close minded Rocker/Metalhead that complains about anything that's not that kinds of music. SW is not AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Scorpions, Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, Metallica, Kreator, etc, to do the same always thinking that nobody notice that over a 30 year career. This are modern times.
I have an idea of what sound you may like from a certain pedal. Just give me 5 hours to figure out where it is under all these hundreds of cables on the ground.
lol reminds me of Peter Framptons setup if you dumped it out of the organized case they keep all 50+ of them in for the tour. I would shaking with anxiety if I was his guitar tech hoping none of those connectors fail during a live show loool
Funny all the comments about the studio. Every studio looks like that in the middle of an album. It's chaotic organization/organized chaos. Glamour shots are when no one is actually working in a facility.
i love that Mark Feltham bloke! he's the sort of guy i would love to have a few beers with after doing some recording. if he doesn't drink beer, tap water with ice cubes would do fine!
Now Steven gotta buy all those pedals and drag em across the world for the tour. Teh power supply situation that creates gives me anxiety just thinking about it loool :D
