    Over the years Irwin designed three 32ft boats: the 1988 Irwin 32 Citation, the Irwin 32.5 (Bill Watson) and what's called the Irwin "Classic" 32.
    The "Classic" 32 was designed by Ted Irwin back in 1970 The Endeavour 32 as a dual-purpose cruiser-racer before the development of IOR. By 1975, IOR was in full swing and boats such as the Irwin 32 were obsolete as racers, especially since PHRF had not yet emerged to help handicap non-competitive boats race at the club level.
    Although the "Classic" 32 had been out-designed for racing, the hull was still a nice, clean, conservative, and comfortable design for cruising.
    The Irwin 32 was originally available either as a keel/centerboard boat drawing 3'6", or with a long fin keel drawing 5', and listed for $16,500.00 in their 1972 brochure. It appears that owners had a choice between the venerable 30hp Universal Atomic 4 gasoline engine or a 25hp Volvo MD-2B diesel auxilary engine, and an optional yawl rig was also available. However, by the time 'necessary options' were added, the sail away price was probably closer to $20,000
    Sail areas: Mainsail (Sloop) 242sqft; Mainsail (Yawl) 216sqft; Mizzen (Yawl) 53; Working Jib (Lapper) 235sqft
    In 1975 Ted Irwin who was then located in Tampa Bay, gave Brooks and Valdes the molds and tooling for the "Classic" 32 and in 1975 Endeavour bought the molds and tooling from and Endeavour's in-house production and design person Dennis Robbins took the Irwin 32 and modified it and the Endeavour 32 formed the basis for the fledging Endeavour Yacht Corporation.
    The Irwin "Classic" 32 and the Endeavour 32 sail plans look identical and they have the same displacement, but the the E32 is listed as 4" wider, and 4" longer overall, and 6" longer on the waterline. It's unclear at this time if this was in fact true.
    The Endeavour 32 was originally built as keel/centerboarder with the same configuration as the Irwin 32 (3'6" board up, 7'10" board down), or with a fixed shoal keel with 4'2" draft. The original Irwin deeper keel (5'0") was discontinued.

    Entertaining as always! Made me look at Irwin with fresh eyes. When I was a kid in the 70's I always looked at Irwins as "Old Man Boats". I can see where the appeal is now that I am one! Leaving the opening ports open under way cracked me up. TBH that's something I would do. But probably only once!

    Really enjoying your reviews. As a beginner, it's nice to have a seasoned skipper give an immense download of great information. I never hear of a baby stay before, very useful information to know that they suck. Please identify more things to avoid in future videos. I'll be looking for a cruiser in the next few years, looking to sail the world. Hoping you can identify some great budget bluewater cruisers for the solo sailor. Keep up the good work and looking forward to more useful nuggets of information useful for the beginner!

      If you want a blue water cruiser you want a baby stay to help keep the mast steady in heavy seas

    He did make some boats in California in the later company years, they had big plans to expand and build numbers of 68+ super cruisers but personal issues stalled the company in the mid 90s.. They are really nice boats, I loved spending time on Mr irwins yachts.

    Over 6000 built, was friends with the irwins and spent time on his personal 68 (really a 72) that he sailed with Jimmy buffet. Buffet did a tribute to Ted after his passing at a sold out show.

    Love the well maintained 80's era boats. That boat is surprisingly spacious down below. I like the in hull portlights, reminds me of the modern Beneteau's. My Hunter Cherubini 33 also has a very large cabin house. She's been sitting for a while so now I'm behind on things I been wanting to do. Planning on doing some updating and tlc stuff then mostly just cleaning her exterior up and wood polishing inside. Then replacing the forward hatch and maybe some portlights.

    The Irwin 21 Free Spirit and Mini-ton are the same boat with slight differences in the rig, with the Free Spirit having slightly more sail area. I know this because I sail and race one. I know of only 4 in the country including mine.

    Never thought I’d see something as roomy as a Catalina 30 from that era, but damn! That actually looks like it may be better laid out than the Catalina 30 by quite a bit (granted this has an extra 2ft.)!

    That boat looks well cared for. Nice layout. A think that the build quality on many reviews of Irwins is an issue. Never sailed one.

    • @BarringtonOASmith
      @BarringtonOASmith 3 года назад +1

      I own an Irwin 34 Citation. I find that people who speak negatively on Irwin's build quality have never sailed on one or have never been on one. Ted Irwin mass produced boats and presented them at a lower price point than his competitors. My previous boat was a Bob Perry design that in 1980 sold for a higher price than a bigger Irwin built in 1985. I think that people thought that because they (Irwins) were cheaper, then they must be something wrong with them. There was nothing wrong with the Irwins. My recollection is that there were well over 400 Irwin 34 Citations built of their over 50 models. There are lots of Irwins on the water.

    • @graywatergardening
      @graywatergardening Год назад

      I have a Irwin 30 Competition. Where it counts, the construction quality is fine, even a little heavy in places. But sure there are couple of non structural shortcuts made in the cabin fitout. Could be a negative for some, but for me it means I have no qualms about improving the boat as I modernize it.
      99% of all the issue I have had with this boat are from previous owners making changes to deck layouts and not bedding new and old holes correctly. Over 200 holes had to be drilled out fresh - most had white silicon as filler. Then fill correctly etc, plus use butyl tape.
