German boatbuilder Hanse Yachts has added some serious pizazz to the middle of its range with the Judel/Vrolijk-designed 455. Just like its siblings, the new 45-footer looks sharp, sails like a dream and is big for her size. Down below, a thoroughly modern interior is as comfortable as it is functional, and topsides, there’s lots of space on deck and in the cockpit to relax and enjoy the ride - a darned good combination, I quickly concluded, on a blustery, picture-perfect fall afternoon out on Massachusetts’ Buzzards Bay.
With a northerly breeze pushing 20 knots, we probably should have thrown a reef in the main before we set out, but instead the boat’s owner opted for a full hoist. I suspected that our beat out of the harbor would be on the sporty side, and it was - quite fun, too. With the powered-up full-batten main and self-tending jib closehauled, we heeled considerably, but in the puffs, just when I expected the boat might round up, the 455’s high-aspect rudder dug in a little deeper, the shoal-draft cast-iron keel did its job, and the boat shot forward as though we were riding on rails.
Tacking the Hanse was as simple as turning the wheel, since the jib is led to a car on a track forward of the mast and tends to itself. With all sail control lines led aft, including the double-ended German-style mainsheet and halyards, electric primary winches set just forward of the twin wheels made the sailing equation that much easier. Even overcanvased, boat handling could not have been simpler.
Beating to windward, we made 8 knots and better, and we saw the GPS speed jump to 9-plus knots when we eased sheets and headed off on a reach. You could cover a lot of miles pretty effortlessly on this boat, upwind and down. In calmer conditions, you’d definitely want to fly the optional asymmetric sail, tacked down to the bail built into the bow roller, to thoroughly enjoy a gentlemanly run off the wind.

I have a Hanse - quite a bit smaller and way more retro - but I am a big fan of these boats. All are designed by Judel&Vrolijk so they sail really, really well. Like this one I opted for a non self tacking 135 headsail to improve off wind and reaching performance. This is not like most Retro reviews but I really appreciated it - great job as always Scot!

Really cool video. As a Coronado resident, this boat is set up for local race dominance, I like this. The boat looks minimal. Looks like the terror for visited yacht club racers. Thanks, Anarchy

Hanse stands for "big value for money". That's why they are quite big in the charter boat scene. Sailing quite well but not very fast. Not really boats for the involved sailor (as you can see e.g. at the traveller situation). Nice for a weekend trip.

Seems to me that you bagged on Craig at Scuttlebutt for having a Patreon account....?

    • @SailingAnarchyUSA

cut n' paste leweck just decided to beg for money, without adding anything to get it. I know he just bought a million plus dollar house in pt loma so it looks like panhandling pays. We spend thousands and thousands of dollars producing these videos. we are actually creating something, and what has he done? nothing.
so if the community doesn't value these videos and we aren't able to continue through any other funding, then we will have to simply stop making them. and that day is looming...

I'd like to piggy back on this. patreon isn't just a money generator. It also is a great community platform. It gives the audience a place to connect directly with us and get a peak into how we do all this. I don't know what scuttlebutt offers and frankly don't care, for us this is another tool and we're using it to get closer to those who enjoy what we're doing

I love the series and this was a nice vid of a nice, but hardly classic boat. "Less retro and more Metro" LOL! But when you were standing on the foredeck, I saw what looked like an old Cal 40, but longer. More Ports in the cabin trunk. Maybe you should get to know that guy! I'd like to know more about that one. All that said, next time I charter, if I see one of these as an option, that would be a nice way to spend a week!!

@@SailingAnarchyUSA The long term quality of a Hanse offshore - I met a couple in the BVIs that bought a new Hanse in Europe and sailed it in the med and across the Atlantic - they said all the hardware had to be replaced bc it disintegrated. The production boats look nice but don’t wear well.

I disagree the 458 water length gets longer as it heels and as a result hull speed goes up - these things can reach all day long at 10 Knots plus - with almost no effort
