The reason you cannot edit the file while it's still in the "etc" directory is because editing it requires administrator permissions. If you just open it with Notepad you don't open Notepad as an administrator, so your computer doesn't let you edit it. By copying it out, editing it and then overwriting it you get asked if you can do it. That little shield icon next to continue when you move the file and try overwriting it means you're using administrator permissions. You can technically run the notepad app as an administrator (for example right clicking it from your start menu) and then click "File" in the top left corner, click open and open the "hosts" file that way. Then you can edit it and save it no problem. But the file overwrite method in this video is much simpler anyway. I just thought this would be interesting to know for some.
Using the method from the video worked on my computer but as soon as I tried it on my rog ally it didn’t work so I do recommend this method as opening notepad as administrator

I played the game 3 years ago and I did not have this problem. Now I wanted to do a replay and I was freezing like this. Thank you for this. Also for me it freezes literally 2 seconds after I start the game - during ubisoft logo sequence. That was also caused by this problem.

One quick Google search lead to me here, and blocking the IP address you listed immediately fixed the problem. Thank you man! Is there any known issue related to low performance (poor FPS) for the same game in Windows 11? Now that's just weird and I've 0 explanation. The host file should've only interacted with whatever defunct service the game is trying to interact with and doesn't mess with the files of the Game itself in any way
Instructions not clear, what do you mean you can't replace it? The file format shouldn't affect putting it back into the folder whatsoever unless you're only making that change to the Copied file and not to all of that file type And if that's the case someone also suggested opening Notepad outside of this with "run as administrator, going to the top left to Open file and getting to that folder, then doing the edits while its open as Admin. you probably selected "save as" and not "save" (or most likely you're trying to edit the file inside the "etc" folder. This isn't possible, you have to copy it somewhere else, like desktop, to edit it, as the guide mentioned) - then it automatically adds a .txt at the end, making it a txt file. Just delete the ".txt" at the end of the filename (I hope you don't have you're system set to hide the file extensions? ;) )
Genuinely, thank you so much. I know jackshit about computers so when I wanted to play a game from my childhood and was struggling, I found myself at a complete loss reading steam FAQs. I saw your post on one of the main threads about the freezing. Dear god, I don't know what I'd be doing without your help. Here's my next question though- How in the hell do I get my xbox controller to map properly?
Are you still having issues with mapping your controller properly ? If so you have to use xc360 to translate your inputs into xbox360 controller inputs then you have to use hidhide (along with the ViGEm bus drivers) to hide your original xbox controller. XC360 will create a fake xbox 360 controller and you want to use this one to play the game.
Unsure then. If cutting the internet worked then the host file thing should've be your ticket out of this but since it didn't... I'm out of tricks to give
You are an angel! No more freezing! If you now have a solution how I can use my xbox-controller with the triggers (the game doesn't "see" them). I would consider that a miracle. The solution from a few years ago doesn't work anymore. I don't know why.
@@TheHylainKnight wow dude cared enough to reply months after posting. I appreciate the help. Also yes worked like a dream and can actually play the damn game.
One, turning the wifi off is just a diagnosis. If just going offline fixed the issue then it's likely what I go over. Two, since the game is still stuttering then that means it's not the outgoing server check that's happening. Probably a graphics thing in which case update drivers, check display settings, blah blah this stuff's been said a thousand times over for every other game out there too.
It should not, as far as I can tell it just basically has the game loop back to a local port rather than taking the few seconds to try and connect to something that doesn't exist. Unless other Ubisoft games intentionally look for this now defunct server it shouldn't affect a thing.
The reason you cannot edit the file while it's still in the "etc" directory is because editing it requires administrator permissions. XC360 will create a fake xbox 360 controller and you want to use this one to play the game.
disable internet works but not by changing host file, the problem is that I want to stream it on twitch
Unsure then. If cutting the internet worked then the host file thing should've be your ticket out of this but since it didn't... I'm out of tricks to give
and I also tried firewall to block both ubisoft and Assassin's creed but it didn't work 😅@@TheHylainKnight
I have the same problem. I guess I'll have to refund it x.x
You are an angel! No more freezing!
If you now have a solution how I can use my xbox-controller with the triggers (the game doesn't "see" them). I would consider that a miracle. The solution from a few years ago doesn't work anymore. I don't know why.
Thank you very much, I always thought it was my pc that couldn't handle high graphics, thankfully it was the fault of the ghost Ubi server
Thank you very much for this, is this fix a permanent one?
Should be, so long as you saved the file and it doesn't revert back somehow
does this cause any issues with other games that connect to the internet? or should i have to keep removing this after I play AC
It shouldn't. you should be fine to leave it even when you're not playing
@@TheHylainKnight wow dude cared enough to reply months after posting. I appreciate the help. Also yes worked like a dream and can actually play the damn game.
Thank you! The IPs in the host file fixed the freezing issue for me!
Lmao came here for the fix and agreed with you on Valhalla
hi is this only a fix for when u turn your wifi off bc mine is still lagging and i dont know what to do
One, turning the wifi off is just a diagnosis.
You deserve 1 million likes, dude.
Should i undo the changes after playing or not? Does it have any effect on pc connections or something like that?
It should not, as far as I can tell it just basically has the game loop back to a local port rather than taking the few seconds to try and connect to something that doesn't exist. Unless other Ubisoft games intentionally look for this now defunct server it shouldn't affect a thing.
@@TheHylainKnight thanks
absolute legend
what if i just put a firewall rule on the game? to remove any wifi connections to it
Might work, I dunno. Turning off wifi fixes it so in theory making sure the game gets 0 bandwidth could work too.
@@TheHylainKnight nah firewall don't work ur method still gets my game to freeze I should've gotten ac rogue😮💨
Beautiful! THANK YOU!
