In my quest to race every Grom that I can, I took the 171cc GY6 Honda Ruckus out for some fun with Aaron from Central Texas Powersports and his modded Grom. Who do you think will win this race!?

People be like "a 300 is too small" and here are full sized men racing sub 150cc on city streets. Proof positive any sized motorcycle is FUN
seattlegrrlie I've been using an old Honda rebel 450 as my daily for close to 5 years now when weather allows. Small bikes are always going to be more fun than big bikes because you can be more reckless with less consequence.
that ruckus is 170cc now
@RyanJL337 he GY6 swapped it, then put in a big bore kit, otherwise this race would have been a lot less close
Rode a Honda 250cc...was a beast...period LoL
Rode a 50cc scooter and it had a decent smooth kick...ppl who say 300 cc is too small apparenlty haven't ridden a bike
I actually ended up getting a ' 72 Honda 550 cc with drag racing bars...was sweet riding baby LoL

Grom for the win. I like that train horn. I was surprised on how evenly matched they were. Best part of all is you were never breaking the speed limit lol. Next time you should switch bikes and race again.

The right thing gy6 is a solid match for the Grom.. even my 50cc one (upped to 72cc) has decent takeoff up to 30mph and will hold 45-47 all day. Has been totally reliable for the 4000 miles I've put on it since the rebuild. Has 6000 total. The whole scoot was ~$700 all in.. not bad IMO.

Well done and fun to watch. I'd love to see the same comparison between a Honda Grom and a Lifan KP-150 Mini. Nothing makes a grown man feel like a kid than an over grown mini bike LOL. Loved it.
I have a Kp mini 150cc bike and they are faster then Grom but not by much
You should mix fuel stabilizer in the gas tank and run it through the system if you're gonna let it sit for long periods of time. Also draining the float bowl will help keep the carb from getting gummed up.
Edit: Just heard you mention fuel stabilizer while I was typing this lol
I see Aaron is a fan of Gary Nixon. I used to see him race at the AMA Vintage Days of Mid Ohio. Did meet him but nothing beyond shaking his hand, LOL. I also heard him speak at a motorcycle rally in PA before I knew he was a legend.

That air horn sounded like what my old 1989 Dodge Daytona Shelby sounded like. Those are nice rides ya'll have. The Ruckus has about 225hp and the Grom has about 275hp. Those are incredible. Now if you'll excuse me I have some more trolling to do!

what size belt you running? those rpms sound pretty low on the top end if youre not running an 842-20-30 you could probably squeeze out a bit more sauce on the high end

Which is better for a first bike a honda helix or a honda grom
@motonosity are you running the vacuum fuel pump or are you running an electric fuel pump setup? If it’s the vacuum pump that’s why you had the hiccup partly I’m sure. The vacuum pumps over fuel the gy6 carb and cause the bog.

Add Sea Foam to your gas. It will clean up carb problems!
Fairly evenly matched but the Grom faded in the end. Or the Ruckus cleared the clogged jets being wide open for a nice stretch.

You're gonna love it! So much fun.
That's a super close race, man. Sure he's got 50 lbs more, which definitely makes a difference, but the ruck's got that misfire. In the end, all things considered, the two bikes are very evenly matched.

The Jets on the ruckus may have little sediment in them... But from the runs you guys had I think you were pretty well matched
he's running an oko carb which means you can literally pop the float bowl off and unscrew both jets easily and clean them

If your jets get dirty, Just put acetone or lacquer thinner,in your gas and drive it, for a good long ride.

Oh yea I live at 6500 feet or so...gearing crucial...dropped one tooth in front added one more to rear sprocket...made way more difference than yoshimara pipe...which does sound great.

You can hear that Ruckus struggling to get fuel on every pull.
Centrifugal oil filter would sap a little power. However pushing oil through a cartridge filter could leech power as well. Give and take. Good with bad.

I have here the very hatchet George Washington used to cut down the cherry tree.....the wooden handle was eaten up by termites and hand to be replaced and the blade became brittle and I had to have that replaced ......but it basically occupies the same space as the original hatchet.
This sounds like his Grom when describing the upgrades. ....but a very cool machine nonetheless.
I'd say the grom wins just because of the 50lbs weight difference between the riders.

I think he was talking about Stabil which is a fuel stabilizer. You should definitely try it out
