John Lennon Dies: Dec. 9, 1980 | Archives | TODAY
I was 12 years old. Had just got out of bed to get ready for school and my mother was sobbing when she told me. I'll never forget that day.
I read “had just got out of bed” & immediately thought the rest would say “dragged a comb across my head”... ive been listening to way too much beatles lately oh my lord
Ok so your 53
i’m 12 right now and a beatles fan, and i couldn’t imagine going through that. im sorry hun
I called my best friend paul and his mom told him, and i did too over the phone. Maybe it was just before school. I thpight it was at night. 10 pm. His name was paul white.
@@embro4564 I think he's talking about Dec 9 the morning after.
John Lennon was once asked in an interview "How do you think you'll die?" in which he replied "I'll probably be popped off by some loony"
How ironic that he actually predicted his own death!
@@melissacooper4482 What if John Lennon was a seer who could see his own death from the very beginning?
@@Meow_Zedong_1949 I've never thought of that.
Source?
prettyshinyspaghetti Southern California Public Radio remembers that in 1964 Lennon answered a question about whether he and the Beatles were about to leave show business by saying: "No ... unless we get shot or something." Additionally, Newsweek reports that in 1965 Lennon told a reporter: "We'll either go in a plane crash or I’ll be popped off by some loony."
John Lennon said that the only people he believed truly promoted peace were Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, and both were shot.
He said that he wanted to follow in their footsteps (as in, be a promoter of peace) and he was shot as well.
Dale Henderson Exactly!, John Lennon was promoting peace and people were listening to him, I think There’s more to it than just Mark Chapman, people who have tried to make a difference in the world have been killed. Princess Diana, Michael Jackson, prince (the singer) Bob Marley, 2Pac, JFK, Martin Luther king. These can’t just be coincidence
@@MrSRV03 Michael Jackson was not murdered, and neither was Prince.
@@joelmorris214
Princess Diana wasn't murdered either. ✔
@@MrSRV03 caesar, lincoln etc. Coincidence, no, people averse to changes in the status quo, sure. Assassinations have happened since forever. Some political, some psychotic stalkers sometimes both at once. There are also many who evaded death under such circumstances: Andy Warhol and, Bjork to name two
Xxxtentacion as well just got murdered this year
9.12.1980 was my 10th Birthday. John Lennon's killer has recently been denied parole for a tenth time and cannot apply for parole again until 2020. He should not ever be released. That is all.
@Jayne Eyre No...he has expressed regret and is a model prisoner. The reason he'll never get out is that no parole board wants to have to deal with the absolute sh*tstorm that it would cause. If he'd shot a random guy he'd have been out by now. If he'd shot a minor popstar he'd also have likely been out. But Lennon...he's got no chance of ever getting out no matter how he behaves or what he does or says.
He’s gonna get killed if released
@@kevinskipp3029 its a good thing he wont get out though?
@@kevinskipp3029 And such is how it should be. There'd be riots by old fogies like me if the murderer of John Lennon were to be let free. And when he dies his body should be dumped in mid-ocean between NA and Europe, weighted down by stone to sink to the bottom of that vast ocean.
John was love and appreciated and his legend will live on.
Chapman is SO not getting out, ever. Period. Despite his good prison behavior over the past 38 years, it doesn't matter anymore. He took away on purpose, one of the greatest singer/songwriters that ever came from Liverpool, from his wife Yoko Ono, his two boys, and from every Beatle fans across the world. The Lord God may forgive Chapman and grant him eternal life come his judgement day, but us long-time fans just simply can't.
He will be locked up until the day he dies, either by natural cause, disease, or suicide, whichever comes first.
*_Imagine signing an autograph for the person that will take your life a few hours later..._*
Chapman later said he got John to sign the autograph to calm him down and ease him so it would "be easier to shoot him" 😡😡😭
He was no Hawaiian
John had said he had a fear of getting shot on stage.
Yeah true its really sad

Lennon funded terrorism.
The world lost a genius and many songs we will never hear.
My dad said he was hanging around with some college friends when the news hit the radio. When it happened, he was in major shock. He withdrew from the group to gather his thoughts and ultimately decided to make some career path changes because of the shock. I can imagine how the world felt when John was killed. Me and my dad enjoy The Beatles, their music and success. John really was a unique man and had a lot of talent. I even say he is my favorite Beatle. I do remember the day George Harrison passed and it was a sad day for me and many others. May John and George Rest In Peace. Long live The Beatles!!!
Did he not hear about JFK ?
I’m sure that was a devastating day too, but my dad wasn’t born yet, that happened 3 years before he was born.
My dad was 13 too he is from England so his death effected him a lot and he was crying .
3:15, in complete shock that he has to say, "shot John Lennon."
RIP the great John Lennon, in heaven. The world has missed him.
Had Lennon employed one security guard, he would have had, at least, a 50/50 chance of surviving that attack. He was murdered by a crazy fan, not a professional killer.
He was shot from behind. It probably wouldnt have made much difference.
John even autographed a record for his killer. He was very approachable and was not scared of people

I read an article that said he did it to become famous. He even mentioned it to his wife 6 months prior. She assumed he was joking with her. When he left for New York a second time he had convinced her it was for the betterment of his mental health.

There's a picture of the Today set that confirms it. Like they say, 1000 words.

I'm not a fan of The Beatles or their solo music but it's really sad that John got shot and killed. He seemed like a good man who cared about humanity.
he just liked money lets honest he could care less
Have you listened to their albums?
We don't care about your opinion,we don't need your input.
Everyone has their own opinions, and someone doesn't need to be a fan of someone to feel sadness and sympathy over their loss. I myself am a big fan of the Beatles and of John Lennon's solo work, but I appreciate your weighing in on the tragic event of Dec. 8, 1980. John Lennon had some personal troubles and flaws, which he admitted to, but overtime he seemed to really try to improve himself, and a more peaceful, better world was something he genuinely wanted to see, and was interested in helping make this happen, if he could.
I heard the news while watching johnny carson--this is an nbc bulletin--I thought the soviet tanks had rolled into Poland. No, out of the blue, lennon was dead. In those days I slept on the floor of my apartment on a pad with a little tv by me. the next morning I woke up, rolled over, turned it on and it was this Today show episode and I thought, "It's true. This really happened." Then as I drove to work I cried and punched my steering wheel. what a useless loss of genius.
Everyone loves you when you are six feet under

He would be 83 years old if he was with us today, 'imagine' the music he would have created.
I think, on that day everyone sang the first verse of "A Day in the Life":
"I read the news today, oh boy..."
Thinking about it saddens me on a level that I cannot express.
I can only imagine if he was here today
I usually don't get too emotional when a celebrity dies beyond saying to myself, "What a shame." I was a freshman in college when John Lennon was shot. I was in my car on the way to my first morning class and I remember feeling devastated. The world lost yet another beacon of peace on that day because some wacko felt he had a point to prove.
Exactly.
I was a junior in high school. I was in the bathroom brushing my teeth getting ready to go to bed, I clicked on the bathroom radio and heard, "We have a report that John Lennon was shot in Ne York tonight. How serious is unknown at this point."
Startled I turned on the Monday Night Football game (New England v Miami) because "ABC Nightline with Ted Koppel" was going to follow the game. It was delayed because the game went into overtime.
Then Howard Cosell announced it and when he said the three words "dead on arrival" I had a chill go up and down my spine that I hadn't had before or since.
I remember that I was shining my boots for inspection the next day. As a 21year old Marine, it was quite shocking that Lennon was gone forever.
John Lennon was a kind and loving man and a fantastic singer. R.I.P. John Lennon.
He was a terrorist.

And that would do... what, exactly?
The whole MK Ultra program set up by CIA--Chapman was their patsy and fall guy for John's murder. :'(
He's also still in jail today
I think that was exactly what John Lennon would of hated.
Chapman was Looney. Listen to the Last Podcast on The Left episodes on Chapman, it is crazy how long he was planning on killing Lennon.
I was 14 and remember this like it was yesterday,I was so upset I had to stay off school the next day and cried in my bedroom all day.

Greatest moment in human history
I was 19 years old at that time. I'm watching tv late at night and my sister calls to say Lennon had been shot. Thinking (hoping) it was a minor injury, I switch channels to find any news on it. I settle on Monday Night Football just in time to hear Cosell say that John had been shot... and killed. The pain of that night has subsided but the disbelief still rings true 43 years later.
