    I have an s9, and for a RUclipsr that’s not a “professional” it’s more than enough camera - I like it more and more every day - wish there was more lens selection but that’s about it. Honestly- I’ve loved it.

    I prefer the S9 because it's much smaller than S5ii. I use to have a GH5; the IBIS and 10bit open gate video was very good but it's so big and cumbersome for daily use even with small micro 4/3 lens. I don't want the S5ii, because the size and weight is similar to GH5.
    Now I'm using the Lumix S9 and Sigma 45mm f2.8. Depth of field from this combo is very similar to my GH5 and a 25mm f1.4 lens, but the S9+45mm have faster and more accurate continuous focus, better low light capability (ISO 8000 from S9 is much better than ISO 2000 from GH5, compensating two stops difference from both lenses), and of course much smaller and lighter.
    GH5 have better IBIS, but surprisingly not by much.

    Stick an EVF on on the S9 and it's a Leica Q3 with interchangeable lens. Probably the exact reason they didn't do it. If it had a EVF and hotshoe. I'd buy it today. The images out of this thing are gorgeous. Expecially the B&W.

    Used the S9 on a 3 camera shoot and recorded for 1.5 hrs straight using the BMD Videos assist in ProRes. The image quality matched the S5IIx Prores perfectly and performed a lot better than the gh7 in low light which was to be expected. The hdmi location is annoying but if you added a cage and a right side handle it would be ok.

    I just bought the S9 and also looked at the S5ii. One thing no one is talking about is the build quality. The picture quality 👌 is okay, but for Panasonic products, I was very disappointed by the switches, rubber seals, etc. They feel like toy cameras. They are not even close to the Canon EOS R6, R5, R3, and the old R build quality. The other BIG issue I have is the screen, when you use the screen as the viewfinder, it is a soft picture, when you play back the clip, it is much cleaner sharper, which means it is a bitrate issue from the sensor to the view screen! The problem with these lumix cameras is the hardware is just ordinary quality..... 😢

    I know some people who don’t care about autofocus even consider the S5 OG which might be a decent option too for some.

    If I was picking a camera, it would be the S5II, particularly as the S5ii has come down in price and can avoid rolling shutter and banding in artificial light. And if I was going to pick the S9 for day to day, etc. I would just be using one of the latest iPhone Pros.
    Now that it has been revealed a full movie (28 years later) has been shot at least in great part using iPhone 15 (Pro I guess), I think a key selling proposition of the S9, which is easy to post stuff on TikTok w/ custom LUTS- something the iPhone can do already, I am not sure of the market of the S9 particularly when small AF lenses are not out from Lumix yet.

      It's a 5% difference which is 1) likely to be different in different markets and at different purchase times and b) negligible in any case. There's no strong argument using price as a variable.

    DPreview recently said that the dynamic range of S9 in picture mode is not as good as S5ii, due to the lack of mechanical shutter and thus requires a faster 12bit readout from the sensor (vs 14 bit in S5ii. Have you seen this issue? Has there been confirmation elsewhere?

      100% honest, idk😂 I’m not super scientific when it comes to those things, my rule of thumb is expose how you want your image to look and you’ll be fine🤷🏼‍♂️

    what about write bitrate - s5iix has 4 times more writing data than s9 - means it is good for color grading and more tracking in vfx

  • @coreoffour
    @coreoffour 2 месяца назад +5

    The S9 and S5Ii can be the exact same price and I'd still argue that they shouldn't be compared because they are made for different purposes.
    Here in Japan, you are a weirdo if you have a massive black chunk of a camera on you at all times. The S5II is too big and conspicuous for it to be an EDC. IDGAF if the S5II becomes cheaper one day, for an EDC, I'd still choose the S9 because I don't want to deal with drawing unwanted attention here. Or anywhere for that matter. Not to mention you look like a doofus when you have something as serious looking as an S5II on you when you're just casually taking a walk.
    Same goes the other way around too. The S9 could have a mechanical shutter, an EVF and shoot unlimited video in CinemaDNG, I still wouldn't bring it on a client shoot as an A cam because clients are typically ignorant and they assume the bigger the camera the better.
    Physical appearances are important. Casual cameras need to look the part and become fashion statements and blend into everyday lives if they want to survive. Things that look the part have value in itself which I think a lot of people dismiss too easily.
    The S9 is a fantastic camera btw. It takes more photos and videos of my everyday life than the S5II ever did because the S5II is a high grade combat knife and the S9 a Santoku. Which one do you think you'd use more everyday?

    • @MatthewDangyou
      @MatthewDangyou  2 месяца назад +1

      Dude great points and comments!! Yeah I personally grab the S9 every time I do any person videos or photos. Even though I love the S5iiX for all my pro video work, like you mentioned I don’t think I want to be the guy at the zoo with a giant camera and a 400mm lens😅

    • @Matt-fo4gg
      @Matt-fo4gg 2 месяца назад +1

      100% agree with all this, I'm actually swapping from an S5 IIx to an S9 (with Sigma I series lenses for the size + aperture ring) since I ended up shooting way more casual content than professional and I like that the S9 looks less pro for those reasons. It's way more acceptable and less intimidating of a camera setup when people do notice it.
      Then for me it wins vs the ZV-E1 or A7C II because of the IBIS (and open gate + other extras). It's one of the few cameras where you can keep it's setup small without any rig or gimbal. Digital/post stabilisation just can't compete (motion blur artifacts, or just how long it takes to process in post through Catalyst browse)

    Concerned that the smaller body of the S9 may not be able to handle the rigors (heat) of streaming for several hours of daily meetings. If it can and came down closer to $1000, I'd buy three.

      @@MatthewDangyou it would definitely be an easy win. It's probably a small niche that will hit the limit during personal use but people often shop with the extremes in mind - A bit like with electric cars lol. Panasonic might be surprised at who ends up buying these, seems to either be people downsizing or serious amateurs. I haven't seen any instagram models with one yet 😂

    • @Metro6am

      @@MatthewDangyou Agree the app function was the main selling point for me. So far most of the content around the S9 is made by long form creators who don't need to worry about size/convenience and will probably edit on a computer. I'm a musician so I'm always under pressure to post stuff to social media, too many steps and that just isn't going to happen lol. One thing I hope is that they will create a load of well labelled Fujifilm clone LUTS so at least we can jump on that bandwagon a bit.
