I drive in the evening for my job. I cannot tell you the amount of people I see walking into the street when it’s dark. It always startles me as they’re very difficult to see.
Not only that but even at night, many of them are on their friggin' phones and not watching for traffic.
People are very easy to see if your also not distracted by your radio passengers food your phone and everything on your mind, DRIVE WHEN YOU DRIVE. Your in a deadly machine and your responsible for what it does and where it goes, ESPECIALLY who it hits. Id bet you also trust a backup camera to keep yourself from hitting your own kids in your driveway.

Also , if the road has light poles , that makes it hard to see , if someone is standing in the dark.
Also , as the narrator said in this video , your eyes are always focusing on movement, which makes it harder to spot people standing on the side of the road.
Now , there are also multiple types of headlights , some offering better visibility and some only a couple meters.
A lot goes in to play when talking about spotting anything on the road in the night , while someone’s headlight being the worst one.
It's absolutely disgraceful that she struck a car hard enough to flip it and eject the driver, killing him, then fled the scene. She had to be tracked down and the judge says 90 days is appropriate? I just can't wrap my head around it....
In most states in the U.S., hit and run involving injury or death is a felony. Even leaving a scene with injuries can be a prosecutable offense. She should have been convicted of manslaughter or negligent homicide at the very least. Having struck the other vehicle from behind would have also put the full responsibility of his injury and death on her shoulders alone. Fleeing the scene out of fear may have been a temporary moment of panic, but failing to report, and also attempting to hide, her involvement was intentional, cold, and calculated. Hopefully relatives of the deceased were able to file a civil suit against her for her reckless, selfish, and heartless actions.
@Lorie Paix - I don't think you understood the results of this investigation. _She_ did not strike a car hard enough to flip it; she struck it _enough_ and in a right to left sweep, that it both relieved traction of the other vehicle's rear wheels and, altered the angle and momentum. Much as the police tactical maneuver (pit-maneuver) does and; the drift maneuver that's intentionally caused from using the rear-wheel parking brakes - applied to lock only the rear wheels in a skid and, the driver uses steering input to swing the rear out in the desired direction.
Higher speed and cornering (there appeared to be a slight bend in this reconstruction) and wet roads - it actually takes surprising little force to cause this result and, the flip results from sliding at speed, side-ways perpendicular to the road.
Also, the driver would not have been ejected (could easily have lived), had he been wearing his seat-belt (can't blame anyone else for that).
She did flee the scene - the limbic system response, is a reasonable enough cause for that and; the continued fear and trepidation could rationalize not coming forward for a time (unless, she was hiding from driving impaired as well). I think that trying to cover-up the incident with repairs, is a true discredit to her morals and ethics and; inattentive driving, following too closely, speed for conditions, improper passing (all very common offenses). 90-days jail time and 1-year license suspension, is not all that unreasonable, otherwise.
Nothing, will restore the death that resulted; I would think that the family of the deceased will seek further compensation, as they determine necessary.

The worst part is not that she left the scene but that she tried to hide what she had done.
The accident itself wasn't intentional, but everything after that certainly was.
So, rationalize this any way you want, but the long and short of it is that a man died because of her behavior behind the wheel of a car.

I'm not being either glib nor callous about the loss and suffering yet: unless the culpable driver has a particular pathological brain defect, she will live with this incident, for the rest of her life, too.
I don't know what you're intending to convince me of; you've otherwise basically repeated my conclusions, based on the ethical and moral aspects of her seeming attempt to hide the evidence - for all we know, she was so overcome and fearful, that she was trying to hide the incident from herself - who knows? I wasn't presented with the entirety of this case, were you? I didn't interview anyone in person, did you? NO-
For a made for TV drama series, I thought this was pretty well done - leaving us to ponder and question all of the _known_ events leading up to the presented findings.
It serves us better, a reminder that a moment of inattention, can cause a lifetime of results (including death).
Our emotions _motivate_ us though, we must use our logical rationale to steer us, correctly.
Also, we don't _know_ what her behavior behind the wheel was - we don't _know_ the condition of her vehicle, was it poorly maintained or, improperly repaired? Was she on the phone or texting, was she impaired by sleep-deprivation or, intoxicants - did she have an un-diagnosed medical condition - did she just leave an emotionally charged situation?

in most cases , i understand accidents happen , deliberately driving when under the influence and deliberately causing accidents to claim on insurance should all be charged as murder ,
20:00 Never assume the driver can see you. Make *SURE* they see you. Be so sure they see you that you are willing to bet your life on it, because that is what you are doing when you cross the street. You are betting your life the driver sees you. If you are wrong it doesn't matter who is at fault. You are dead either way.
THIS!! I wish everyone paid attention and thought this way whilst crossing a street... even at a crosswalk. Never assume, just because you have the little, white, "it's safe to cross" guy flashing at you, as you cross at an intersection, that the people driving will be paying attention to you. And don't even get me started on jaywalking. My best friend was killed jaywalking across an 8 lane highway.. 25ft from a crosswalk.. when an elderly lady ran a red and hit her at approx. 60mph. A few years later, my daughter was a passenger in a car that hit another woman who was jaywalking across the same road, a few miles down. She died, as well, even though there was a Highway Patrol officer driving right behind the car my daughter was in, who witnessed the accident and provided as much medical help as he was capable of immediately. Cars vs peds never works out well for the pedestrian.
The same applies to riding motorcycles. I'm always looking & trying to anticipate issues in a worse case scenario.

True. I’ve had times where my eyes luckily saw someone but not well. Some people wear all black, have no reflective lights or anything, and don’t use the cross walks or anything making it very terrifying for us all. I don’t wan someone hurt so it’s very nerve racking when someone randomly runs in front of you
Third accident. They show the driver on his cellphone but don’t mention it. Did they have evidence that he was on the phone? Also, was Margaret still in “panic mode” when she was at the car repair shop? I think not. Her actions show a blatant disregard for the plight of the other driver. Her sentence was a joke.
I think the fact he appears to have been on his cellphone ( why else show it?) and wasn't wearing a seat belt , suggests that he was a contributory factor to the cause and result of the initial incident. I can assure you the panic mode can persist for days as panic changes to an unrelenting anxiety which occupies every living second. I know I drove away from a parking incident observed by many .people and hid my car in a car park whilst trying to get a grip on what had happened. Nobody was injured. fight, flight and fright. richard

That is what usually happens. The impaired driver has the less severe injuries.
It never ceases to amaze me that people who drink and drug can get behind the wheel and kill people, yet they take no responsibility for their actions.

Disgusting ! I have a clean record and 2 million driving miles over 40 years driving commercial vehicles and I’m sure I would get a sentence of more than 90 days as I should if I fled the scene ! It’s not a right but a privilege !

I was in a semi-low impact hit to the side of my car and still ended up on the top of my car, a partial roll. I'm still fighting the insurance for hospital bills.

I was hit by a van speeding 55+mph in a 40mph back in 1984 walking home from school. I'm still living it in many ways.
Disagree somewhat. There CAN be an accident in that nobody did anything wrong. Example: My sister was driving with my then 8 mo. old nephew strapped safely in his car seat. My sister had on her seatbelt, wasn't speeding, no cell phone, (there were none in 1978). A sinkhole suddenly opened up, no warning, no way of predicting such a thing, the area not geologically prone to sinkholes. She ended up with the car tipped on a 45° angle against the driver's side doors, suspended over the hole. Long story short, the next person to come along stopped, called 911 from a house. The rescue squad got them out safely, only minor injuries, bruises to my sister, nephew unhurt. He has no memory of the incident being too young. The car was totalled because the frame cracked. Turns out the sinkhole was caused by failure of a drainage pipe installed in the 1920s. Who was responsible? Long ago deceased people from a municipality that no longer existed. There was no way for anyone from the current municipality to know the pipe was there. The records had long ago vanished. This was a freak accident.
Just because the people responsible are dead or if the records were lost doesn't mean that "nobody did anything wrong". It's possible that the drainage wasn't serviced or it should have been replaced or inspected at some point. If those weren't done because of someone losing the records about he drainage pipe then they are the main cause of the crash. Sure you won't find them, but that doesn't mean that no one did anything wrong or that no one is at fault.
Any man made object no matter what it is will eventually one day fail at the worst time for someone whom can be any one of us. Always expect the unexpected

@Snow Bird - If she was _just_ standing (not crossing) it was probably while waiting for the car with the headlights on, to pass - The SUV's headlights were not on so, we believe that she didn't know it was there and; the SUV driver (like the girl) probably only saw the other vehicles lights, not her. Impatience of youth, perhaps yet; no-one was determined at fault for this tragic culmination of conditions.
Knowing how some university professors are, "I was involved in a fatal car accident and am being held by police for questioning" might not suffice as an excuse for missing finals. But I dunno how you're going to take your exams after doing something like that anyway.

Jacqueline Marcs As much as I hated putting on my seatbelt as a kid I learned the importance of it when I started driving. I was stupid. I would put the top part of the belt behind me and only keep the bottom part on. The reason for this is because I had been accustom to my grandpas old 88 Pontiac when I sat in the back it only had the waist belt, as well as the school busses in the years following. Margaret should have gotten way more for that then they lead on. She fled and left a father of 3 to die. That bitch should have fried.

Try cellphone use, no seat belt and an accident he could have prevented by concentrating on driving . People do not go into panic mode for merely seconds or minutes. How can leaving the scene of an accident you caused which killed a man, not be malicious? She saw the car roll over, and not knowing if there were dead children in the car even, drove calmly on to her exams. I guess she had a 'I'm okay and I'm the only one that matters' moment. Yes, judge, let her off easy, that clean driving record is a get out of jail free card. Well, it would be if she'd gone to jail, I'm sure they suspended that.

All the people killed in the accidents were not completely without blame, not wearing safety belts, not observing traffic as a pedestrian etc are all contributing factors.

I can just about understand panicking and fleeing the scene. I cannot understand continuing to hide and attempting to cover the damage by taking your car to a repair shop, after you've had plenty of time to calm down. Margaret is an immoral POS and should have done some serious time.

In lots of cases but at same time there’s a road by my house where I jaywalk because the crosswalk is literally more dangerous. If you used the crosswalk they want you to you won’t be able to see the cars coming over the small hill while the other side you can see them. And it’s surprising it’s like they’re trying to kill us

How do you know the headlight wasn’t burnt out prior and he was just operating on one headlight?
They did a test and it showed it was in working condition. If the headlight was burned out the filament would be in the bulb just like when a light bulb burns out in your house.
If we were willing to make getting and keeping a licence harder, and improve driver's training somewhat closer to what pilots get we could save so many lives.
Any person who does something that proves they have very little (if any) good judgment then you should not be driving. Texting while driving and driving drunk are two things I think should cause your license to be revoked on a first offence.
If you need to be told not to text and drive, you do not need to be driving.
It may remove about 20% of all drivers, but it would be the worst, most dangerous 20% of drivers. If you are outside that bottom 20%, do you really want those people on the road with you? And if you are in that bottom 20%, you need to take some classes and work on improving your skill.
As it is, that bottom 20% has no reason to improve.

Oh ok so the guy actually fled the scene after a crash to elude police. He was clear enough to elude police yet not clear enough to NOT drive under the influence. That makes no sense to me. If he is clear headed to flee then there's no excuse for him deciding to drive.

While yes delta v is kind of correct, a more accurate way to quantify forces in a crash is delta m, or change in momentum. Change in momentum is a more useful figure than change in velocity because it can be used to determine impulse - which is equal to change in momentum over time. Impulse is also equal to force times time, and is equal for crashes with identical parameters. They used the speed to get an idea of the forces involved, but like you could just... Y'know, calculate the forces involved. The math's not that bad. Like, if you're already calculating velocity it's not that much extra work to take the weight of the car(s) into account and get a much more useful number.
Measuring change in speed can be useful, but because impulse is actually measured as momentum over time (not velocity over time as the show implied), the exact force could vary wildly depending on the weight of the objects involved in the collision. The amount of force it takes to reverse the direction of a bicyclist is wildly different from the amount of force it takes to reverse the direction of an eighteen wheeler.

It all depends on who you are. My son was an over the road driver. He told me the trucker is always blamed for the accidents.for he too was in a collision and he wasn t at fault. Yes the courts aren t very lenient...

what i don't get is why are the drivers there throughout the investigation, they should be taken to the hospital if need or police station for questioning. not just hanging around the evidence

All the people who have caused crashes should be made to stand in front of kids who are becoming of age to drive and admit to what they did. Repetitive reminders might help them to not repeat what they did!! I have commented a few times and in a nutshell, everytime I have stressed that the consequences are a slap on the wrist!
The sentencing and punishments are never high in vehicular/road accidents because we ALL drive, and many human accidents happen, 1000's of them every day in the US alone... accidents, rarely deliberate and the census is, it could happen to any one of us...
Also our road systems are unchanged from the horse and cart days but now we pass each other doing up to 75+ miles an hour!

To show inconsistencies in the story in that scenario, to give you a demonstration of why that does not add up. It's very good to shed light on an investigation.

its not a black box per say , i think they get the info from the ECU and other onboard computers that record things in that case it seems the airbag reordered the info

I dont understand why the USA doesnt have federal/countrywide seatbelt laws!!! In the UK its an immediate ticket, upto £500... There are very few exemptions allowed under law...

I’m pretty sure his headlights were fully on but one of his bulbs burnt out or it could have died due to the hit. My bulb went out after body car repairs which had a lot of vibration hits to pull metal

Then be ⚠️ Utah is known for horrible driving. I live here and was hit years ago while in a crosswalk legally with the crosswalk -walk sign lit and a red light. I was hit. Many other incidents, but known as close calls since my auotpedestrian accident have happened since to me.

90 days for a live, 3 children with no father, a wife with no husband. Accidents like that should get the same penalty as murder cause in the end it is.
Any accident is not a good one so it really make's me mad that people don't care who they hurt if they get into an accident. Sometime's i think that they didn't take driving to heart. it is a privilege to drive not a right. So with that being said i am glad that i watch what is around me when i drive. And i don't get on the phone when i drive either.
About a month ago I was the passenger in a rear end crash, my mom was driving. We were stopped and a girl rear ended us she was going about 60 mph and she pushed our car forward into a delivery truck and we pushed that truck into another delivery truck. We walked away with a few bruises

I can't imagine how the person who Paul was talking to feels. To hear him holer and hear crashing sounds. I hope he or she seeks help to deal with the tragedy. For the driver at fault....she did not get enough time. I seen people use a vehicle of some sort to express negative emotions. This is no different than a person using a gun because they are angry at another person. Vehicles are weapns. All the videos I watched, not one person, who was at fault for causing a crash that ended up in fatality receive the sentence they should have received. This is mind blowing and gut wrenching! This girl received 90 days! Probation for acting irresponsible while operating a motor vehicle that took a father away from his son who is waitng for his dad to coach his ball team! She left! She looked behind her, knew she hit a vehicle and decided to drive away!! My GOD!!! Hope she feels bad everyday she lives!! Leaving tells me what I need to know about her character!

For various speed values, the maximum lateral friction demand between the road surface and vehicle tyres is calculated. ( Not sure how they do that. ) Once exceeded... your gone out of control... skidding..
Next episode I wouldn't be surprised if someone was on their phone and just plowed through an orphanage killing every single child just to find at the end they get their license suspended for 3 days.

the DA looked it over and the evidence was poorly handled they got nothing
they also failed AGAIN at 34:03 the SUV in question has automatic headlights..
the vehicle was in poor maintenance..... the headlights were on but the bulbs were failed which is a owner of the vehicle issue and not the person who was hit :O..

headlamp driver module (relay) . These are known to fail and there is even recalls on later year Chevrolet TrailBlazer GMT360's.... which would cause the bulb(s) to pop but still "appear to be on"

I’ve caught so many people starting to cross the road and then being stopped by my hand. Seriously??? Were they never taught to look both ways? I’ve almost hit dumb kids jumping out on the street while I’m driving. Thank god I never drive fast enough to not be able to stop quick enough. Pedestrians should think about the trauma they will cause by walking out into traffic. They may lose their life and also cause trauma to the driver or drivers.
I had a friend who was a UPS driver and he ran over 2 guys who were on 1 bike in traffic. A car hit them first and they were thrown directly in front of his truck. They lost their lives after being hit once and then being run over by a truck and 2 other cars. He had to go to therapy for over 2 years and couldn’t drive for even longer because it traumatized him so badly. He had nightmares for years.
Also, why do people lie about hitting people or causing an accident? I’m so disappointed in the human race.

In many other civilized countries you wouldn't have walked away because of a dumb judge or a clean driver's license slate. You'd end up at manslaughter plus fleeing the scene. If this is not the normal case in US I pity all US citizens, that's so sad. That said, *_ALWAYS_* wear your seat-belts. It is not shameful to protect you own life as far sas you can!
But hitting a pedestrian may not be the driver's fault. If the pedestrian tried to cross when she wasn't seen by the drivers, then the accident would be the fault of the pedestrian.

I really do have the opinion and I always have had, that, if you get behind the wheel of a car, under the influence of alcohol/drugs its not manslaughter its murder,... people don't seem to realise that you are in possession of a deadly weapon exactly same as a gun, and if you don't use it correctly people can get injured, maimed or killed especially if the driver is under the influence, so how is that any different from messing with a gun and pulling the trigger. You didn't intend to hurt someone, but you have to accept that your actions have resulted in a death and you know that yes you may not have intend it but there is a possibility that if you drive wrecklessly and/impaired it may result in a collision 💥 and because your fully aware of that fact it now should be murder....
