When Tragedy Strikes: The Harrowing Reality of Road Accidents

  • On a seemingly normal day, with perfect driving conditions and clear visibility, tragedy strikes a single mother and her young son. When a mobile home suddenly breaks in the middle of the road the mother reacts fast, stopping her car. However, the driver of the school bus driving behind doesn't react as fast, causing a horrific crash.
    Whether it's driving under the influence, not paying attention or simply a misunderstanding, crashes can occur from any situation. When tragedy does strike it's up to the Accident Investigators to figure out just why the crashes happened.

      I was a collision investigator for about 10 years. People who are crouched down can be very difficult to see. Time of day, weather, victims clothing, lighting, road surface and topography are just some of the things that come into play when we look at these. It seems like a duh, but in reality it is very easy to miss someone who is crouched down or to mistake them for an animal or even debris.

    • @dawnwr30
      @dawnwr30 3 года назад

      Yeah in this case for sure. It was broad daylight so you're still going to see the person. it might take a little longer but you should see them in time to swerve or stop. However, I will say at night it's a whole different ball game. now this didn't occur at night, but if someone were laying on a road in the dark by the time you see that person, especially if it's a road with a pretty decently high speed limit, you could certainly hit them because you don't see then till it's too late.

    My heart goes out to anyone who investigates such as this. As a career fire officer I have been involved with my fare share and maybe more but in all but one case the in depth investigation at the scene was done by others. My one incident of responsibility for investigating the death of a six year old boy was more than enough for me. How these guys go on beats me. I still see, almost forty years later, every minute detail, recall every little sound and the reactions of both parents, one in a state of utter disbelief the other hysterical. Interviewing the older brother, who with his friends were responsible for instigating the fire with lighted aerosol cans and the sudden realisation he had killed his younger brother. The whole thing was utterly heartbreaking to me as a father of two the same age. Have I recovered? Not really. The images, smells and sounds are still there but with a little more detachment every day. How full time investigators do it without emotional burnout beats the hell out of me.

    • @lkop09nowbterp
      @lkop09nowbterp Год назад +1

      It starts out difficult. You think about it and it plays on your psyche. After repeated incidents year after year you begin to "build up immunity" for a lack of better terms, to the carnage. After a while I found that I wasnt even thinking about it as soon as I cleared the scene. Unless I was the arresting or reporting officer of course, and only because I was reminded of it during the subsequent investigaton. Of course there were more serious/gruesome incidents that would stand out, but generally speaking, I got over it. You just get used to it, even if you dont want to. You cant feel bad for not feeling bad. If you do, then it's time to find a new profession. I was just glad to be able to assist in bringing closure to greiving family/friends. One execption, when kids were involved it took a little longer. When it's a fellow officer, all bets are off. I still find myself shaking my head 21 years later at the whole incident. Still fresh in my mind. When clearing these types of scenes I always said a prayer for the families who, in a few hours, were going to have their lives smashed and forever changed.

About 20 years ago there was a guy near St. Louis that was given 4 years after killing 4 family members due to him drinking and driving!! Only 1 year per person!! I remember some of the news reports of some of the family members working tirelessly to change the drunk driving laws to get longer jail/prison terms of convicted drunk drivers killing someone when they were driving and get into an accident. If you are VERY sharp on your instincts...as in, you've practiced the entire maneuver before in safe conditions plenty of times...you can sometimes avoid being rear-ended on the interstate by hitting the hazard lights the instant you realize you're getting ready to drop significantly below the posted speed on a road with such a high speed limit. I learned from watching semi drivers that putting your hazards on right away makes the driver behind you know immediately that this is not normal braking. Drivers behind you who see you braking may not be able to properly judge just how hard you're braking and may think you're just trimming your speed slightly when you're actually coming to a stop or close to it. The thing is you have GOT to practice this in advance multiple times in a safe situation because you need to be able to a) hit your hazards without taking your eyes off the road at all, b), brake, and c) keep your car under control and steer left-handed during a hard braking maneuver. But if you DO practice this safely before you have to do it for real, it can reduce the severity of or avoid an incident altogether.

      Have you ever tried to put out a fully engulfed car on fire. Not gonna happen with a fire exteguisher and the threat of an explosion, plus the intense heat keeps you from getting close. By the way, it was a re-enactment so maybe they did.

    This video was recommended in November 2020. In the first case, why was the bus driver not charged with following too closely and driving too fast to avoid a collision? If a driver maintains a reasonable distance and a safe speed, it is always possible to avoid a collision with a car which has stopped suddenly. In my opinion, this school bus driver deserved a portion of the blame for two deaths.

      Because your eyes are not looking down at all times. Anyone that has ever driven a car has driven over something they did not see, regardless of the size of it. If it's not in your sight line, it's difficult to see. Same reason that people up in the air, on roof tops, etc. surprise you - because you normally aren't looking up. I used to be a roofer and you would not believe how many times people walk just a couple feet under you and do not notice you there.

    This is a sad testament to our judicial system. The man deliberately caused the death of a young mom and her very young child. Depriving them and their families of having long happy life together. Yet our ridiculous legal system simply sentences this murderer to 11 years in prison. Even worse, our broken judicial system will no doubt release him in half the time. It is disgusting. He should never be released from prison.

    11 years in prison was not long enough for someone who deliberately causes a crash for self gain and killing a young mother and child. He also had previous convictions for the same offence and could have been a lot worse with a school bus .
    Drivers who commit these offences are just selfish scumbags and should be banned from driving for life with no second chance..
