From the travellers who rely on it to the teams that work along it, the series features surprising stories and characters normally hidden from view. The repairmen who risk their lives as huge, fast and unpredictable vehicles thunder past, the irate local residents whose peace is disturbed by another set of night works and the police who mop up when things go wrong.
The Motorway: Life In The Fast Lane provides a unique 360 degree insight into this vas and fascinating eco-system.

I’m so glad the animal road crews treat pets and other animals with respect and help owners locate the bodies of their deceased animals. This speaks highly of the British people.
Me too.
I never fail to get a smile from seeing the army wearing high vis vests over camouflage gear.
Royal Irish I think - sterling work by the lads. My son is a REME Captain, his best mate is in the Logis and does bomb disposals. It’s cushy right up until it isn’t.
I feel like it must be even more emotional in a way when a dog doesn’t have a chip, because you know there could be a family out there looking and never know what happened because they can’t be located 😢
🐎💨 Suicidal Horses... I've heard it all now!
Horse: i have had enough of all this
horsing around! 🤣💦
The sandwich sketch was hilarious! "Probably got a dead badger in mine!" 😂
I used to do lunch for my ex partner and leave little "love you" notes. I also found some loose, sliced spam with a picture of a lion's head in it and he was a leo sign....

This is a really interesting and well made series. I have got a great deal of respect for the teams that deal with these (mostly thankless and dangerous) jobs. Top stuff.

That gritter was 100% on the shitter when he took that call
That comment about suicidal horses was priceless
That’s why Manitoba uses sand: all that damage is alleviated. The heaving from the ground freezing two feet deep does a great job of destroying our roads on its own.
Glad to see Matt Lucas is active on keeping the motorways ice-free
48:00 they should get post10 hired...
These programmes are a real eye opener. So much happens that you don’t think about when you’re driving on the motorways.
A storm doesn’t cause a car to flip, people not driving to the conditions whilst in a storm is what causes a car to flip 🙄
The first (and last) that those skateboarders at 2:00 will know about "Smart Motorway" will be when they get fucking painted over a distance of a few hundred yards by an HGV using lane 1 aka the hard shoulder as an authorised lane.
Turned into motorway jam spread
I would be putting more sand than salt on the roads, hey, I’m Canadian, we know how to drive on snow, and the sand is easier on the cement and iron
I was wondering about that. Surely with time and technology they must be able to come up with another solution instead of using salt.
They use a mix of salt and sand I live in England and we use a mix
Keira Allen yes but why bother with the salt? We (as Canadians)use salt only on sidewalks. Or private roads. The only other example is roads that are free of metal. Everything else gets sand and only sand. And we just install heated roads. Same energy as the voltage to protect the steel will melt the ice. It’s inefficient.
kaidanariko I think it’s just cheaper in the uk i don’t really know but I’m guessing it’s cheaper to get large quantities

Another good video, thanks. Isn't it funny how other countries [usually Scandinavia; Northern European], handle harsher winters alright, yet the first sign of a bad snow and icing in the UK, things fall apart. And the poor Highways and railways staff get blamed?
It is probably nearer the truth, that Governments (since 2010) cut everything to the bone, and remove any slack in the system - so that when we get a real winter, many roads and railways do not have the money to deal with it, and keep things going.
It's no good blaming the workers, when pen-pushers (again since 2010), are to blame for all the cuts.
Incidents like people trapped in vehicles overnight, (albeit in 2003), or budgets for winter conditions being cut are unforgivable. Ministers control budgets and key decisions, with their minds fixed on climbing the Whitehall pole; whilst the ordinary workers often do their job for 20 -30 yrs or more. Yet who gets the worst stick?
Lee n Wayne. Great guys ! 👍🏻 Our boys in Green (army) Always dependable and hero’s. Get stuck in to whatever needs to be done. Well done boys
As far as snow and ice are concerned, no matter how prepared the roads crews are with sand, salt spreaders and computers, until British drivers use good snow tires and learn how to drive in winter conditions, it will all be for naught.
A storm doesn't make vehicles flip!
Driving beyond the capabilities of the vehicle or the driver causes cars to flip! People forget they can either stop and wait for the storm to stop, or slow down
Spaghetti Junction looks strikingly similar to Malfunction Junction in Birmingham, Alabama
Namesakes?
I'm from central Alabama and I was thinking the exact same thing!
That poor kid WE are supposed to make the kids confident with your driving, not terrify them.
4:56 is that a wiper for the camera
Of course. Otherwise highways officers would have to stop every 5 minutes to climb up and wipe it with a tissue. :)
Yes it is
wow this is my favourite documentaries thank you for uploading them
i love how the military are wearing a hiviz jacket over camo
GlowWorm, GlowWorm please don't let me down! GlowWorm, GlowWorm keep me safe and how!
No need to be camouflage is there though.. That's why they put on the hiviz.
Bless all the road workers that keep the motorways moving
Interesting how the 2 kids in the car seats had loose straps and their mothers belt wasn't on proper;y
Ha! where I live, 65mph wind is just a stiff breeze! We don't even get a warning unless it's at least 70 to 100mph....
I love this video edit. Is nice, educational and yep, i love learning new jokes :D
Cheers guys and thank you for keeping the roads clean. Hugs
Come on... Some snow and its havoc and then highway people apologies in TV?! What's wrong with people - PROPER winter tyre and PROPER driving and, well, don't drive at all if you can't handle it!
Sadly the weather is sensationalised here. Every fucking year people go out in it not having a clue how to drive in it. Drives me crazy.
White Friday?!?!?! I am from States and there is hardly no snow there!!! Even in places like I live the first couple storms bring out the “idiot” drivers that forget how to properly drive from one winter to the next!!!!! Full size trucks act like there is no snow and end up in ditches from driving to fast. We get a lot of ice and it doesn’t make what you’re driving slippery is slippery!!!! A 30 min drive to work for me is often 1-1.5 hours long and it wasn’t surprising to have to get a hotel for the night occasionally because our roads Become impassable usually at least a couple times a year. Now I am disabled and my reflex time is poor so I gave up driving. Since I can’t work and have difficulty walking there is no reason I absolutely need to be driving 🤷🏽♀️🥰
a thankless job they do, road works is somethin they have to do....but naebody wants the tae do it.....its liike housework.....you gotta hoover the carpet and clean the dishes sometime don't ya ? gotta do the same on the Road
Are those guys picking up rubbish on the motorway allowed to keep any cash they find or do they have to turn it in?
Finders keepers law
Phoebe picking up rubbish that shouldn’t even be on the floor in the first place doesn’t pay enough🤭
These people are more essential than footballers but society doesn’t look from it from that angle? People in society nowadays think celebrities are reality when it really isn’t celebrities couldn’t be further far removed from reality as there Hollywood movies, it’s a joke, we need more heros less criminals affiliated with Blm and antifa
🤭🥴
I think we know the answer to that, more than likely they are required to turn it over but they don't enforce it. When I was working security at the casino, although we had rules requiring us to turn over any cash that we found on the ground or laying around, it wasn't something we enforced (after all, how the bloody heck can you prove that the cash really belonged to someone else?)
the guy at 32:02, did anyone else think of little Britain when they saw him?
wonderful job guys thankyou really enlightening deepest respect to you all
Combine weather with drivers that don’t adapt for the weather and you’ve got a recipe for disaster! Stay home if you it’s not required for you to go out!
The storm didn't have anything to do with it...people who are driving irresponsibly for the weather is the problem
Of the many jobs I’m too impatient for, this is definitely one.💜💜💜
And I reckon I'm too scared for it!!! They are brave getting out on the highways agency when someone could just hit them with a car let alone a truck
Not knowing what those quoted 130 jobs are?, makes this series fascinating, also the behaviour of perfectly ordinary people who turn into maniacs as soon as they get behind the steering wheels of their vehicles.
Aww the poor badger. It looked like a fur hat at first.😊
It's called Great Britain in honour of the great British weather (yes, it's an extremely wet joke). 🤣
9:30 - Like the poster(s) UTV!
The sandwiches comparison - hilarious!
It didn't look like all that much snow.
“People having naughties in cars.” Yeah; where everyone SEES them! 😳🤭😆
Lol the sandwiches got me though lol lol I love them, seem they work well together nuff respect.one day I will take sandwich for you with cheez and all the food stuff lol!!!

@Lady Jupiter if you are offended by someones use of the "F word" i dont think the internet is the right place for you!
@Lady Jupiter FUCKING BOOMER
Lady Jupiter you fucking goon, you have less of a vocabulary if you don’t swear if you actually do your research😊😊
One other comment ... pines/evergreens tend to have shallow roots and combined with wet soil are very likely to fall in high winds!
4.05 there’s likely a teleprompter sitting on their dashboard just out of view of the camera, and it’s telling them to say all of that and judging from their facial expressions and behaviour I’d say that-that’s quite likely the case 😂😂🤣🤣🤣😅
I've slept in the outside lane of the M6 for 3 hours...
Road closures suck 😂😮😢
Good with the anti-electrolysis deal.
An idle thought - why not coat the concrete with some kind of salt-resistant material?
Good show, but needs more adverts
10.38 weather guy clearly needs to learn how to hold a steering wheel more safely.
Funny how we can have CCTV up and down the motorways yet we can't have any on our streets...
we used to have more cctv per sq mile in the uk than any other country, but recently china overtook us in that respect, but cctv is literally everywhere, you probably won't even notice 70% of them, they claim the average Briton is caught on cctv 70 times a day, more if you're in a city
Yes it is everywhere, yet they still can't catch any criminals. What a joke.
Ben Wfc are we china though?
@Lady Jupiter if you can't handle a swear word you should probably stay off the internet
WTF? CCTV is on every street

Why is there 60 trees growing along a motorway in the first place most counties use tightly planted hedges
Yes, chivkens are evil, but that dam rooster is satan homself. When i was 3 or 4 i had the rooster take me down and now i still have the scar. The rooster didnt flair well, grandpa grabbed the axe and took it to mom and she canned that evil bird. Thats all i can remember now.
Why are the gritters not driving round listening to Garry Gritter?? 'Do You Want To Grit Me', 'Hello Hello I'm Gritting Again', 'Im The Leader Of The Gritters', 'Remember I Grit This Way' and 'Grit on'.
All you from Canada and the US, constantly saying you have it much worse than the UK.... Remember, we are a fraction of your size, we drive much faster on much narrower roads... Much more dangerous, coupled with idiots driving too fast for the conditions in bad weather... Have to say they all work hard in some awful conditions and on the whole stay remarkably cheerful... Thank you roadies..
Them crash barriers can be more dangerous than anything else
That young boy @4:29 isn't properly secured into his car seat, he hasn't got a seat belt/harness over his shoulders.
Snow storm? lol, that's just a dusting
LOL, I live in Canada. That was nothing.
@@hummingbird2254 I live in Minnesota.
@@lewiscourtney5740 Yes, you would get a lot of snow there too ! I'm in southwestern Ontario, sandwiched between 2 of the great lakes. We get a lot of lake effect snow and snow squalls. I love it !
Our snow falls as wet slushy crap which turns to ice in a matter of hours. Your dusting gets blown off the road by a couple of fast moving cars, but what we get most commonly is like driving through over soaked paper mache.
If you compare it to offroading, Canadian snow is a damp gravel track, UK snow is waterlogged clay.
@@markwright3161 We get all different types of snow here, depending on the temperature.
Highways Minister sounds like a real politician:
As minister, I will see to it that severe winter weather will not come to Britain this year. Not a single snowflake or hailstone will fall on our motorways.
Yeah, right.
😀

42:40 chickens are aggressive man
There was like 3 inches of snow! 🤣🤣🤣
3 inc world end lol
Lmaaoooo I live in Texas and still three inches isn’t bad 😂😂 although people start forgetting how to drive if it barely sprinkles then you have the people that go way too fast when it’s snowing or there is ice on the ground and then you can’t get anywhere because there’s a million wrecks
Problem in the UK is that it melts too quickly and freezes, ice is a huge problem there
God job
Salt on the roads is very very good. But I dont like small rocks and stones in the salt. Why? Its destorying my windshield because it chips it and my paint!!
I can see this headquarters from my flats window
"People complain about not fixing that roundabout because we need to be prepared to salt the roads"
Funny that because i complain about them plowing and salting the roads here. And it's not even that they do it over say fixing a roundabout. It's about them removing all the FUN from the roads.
God Bless You All

Gritter complaining about having his phone on him for £20 an hour, Gimmie that phone!
The parents with the 3 kids are so sad
Wait what?? Salt 🧂 how does that work on a road? Sorry I live in hot area.
Salty water has a lower freezing point so it has to be colder for it to freeze and be dangerous. Makes it less likely to freeze.
Wouldn't sand work instead of caustic salt? Just curious 🤔
Marcy Donnette they use both depends on what the conditions are
So if I got this right the M5 goes from West Midlands to Mid Westlands, the M8 goes from South Eastlands to East Southlands with an exit to Southumbria via Westumbria. Or you could take the M4 from Eastumbria to Northwest Westlands.
Sounds clear enough!
You're funny! And on spot!!
