Emily Blunt makes the semi-romantic tension of this story work. It's implicitly challenging because her character only ever knows Cage for a day or so at a time, while he is becoming progressively more and more familiar with her. That's what I think she nails in that "parting" scene, is she's been there with Hendricks so she "gets it", and knows that Cage cares for her already, so that "I wish I could have gotten to know you better" really is about as far as she can really come but she does want to come that far

Yes, this is an understated concept in the film. He has spent months (years?) with her under the most intense circumstances of his life. But she has only spent hours with him. It’s a surprisingly deep idea.

I was convinced to go see this because a friend said: you get to watch Tom Cruise get killed over and over again. This, and Tropic Thunder, is where I started liking Tom Cruise in movies again, after he went slightly crazy in the 2000s. Oblivion is one of my favorite movies, now, not so much for the movie, but the environment and atmosphere.

Ive read the graphic novel this movie is based on. They changed the ending as it was tragic. Cage must battle the Angel of Verdun for the power, as they you always be an antennae of the enemies eye, and she thinks he does have the chops to keep fighting. Its an incredible fight between the two as they both have blades, buts hes learned how to use and defend the blades from studying her for his "entire life". He kills her, hold her hand... and vows to wear bright colored armor and continue the war in her name... for humanity.

I walked out of the theater in 2014 with a teenager-level crush on Emily Blunt. Not just because of how badass her character was or how stunning she is but because of the obvious dedication she put into the role. Every movie of hers that I have seen since has only strengthened that. That aside, I do think that the BEST part of this movie is the character played by Bill Paxton. It is absolutely clear that Bill (RIP) had a great time playing the role. Generally, I think everyone looks like they had a great time filming this movie.

Those military exoskeletons in the movie are very similar to the prototypes that various military contractors have been working on for a decade or so. Afaik they're still a long way from being ready for actual use. It seems military research is focusing on unmanned war/battle technologies; we already have advanced drones and small robots for bomb disposal and other tasks. We're going to see more of that stuff become more common. I guess it's a good thing since it puts less soldiers in harms way.

As mentioned earlier, the screenplay is based on a Japanese Manga call "All You Need Is Kill" ... what is interesting is that the author wrote a forward about the inspiration came from playing a rpg video game. He noticed the 'praise' that some npcs gave him for getting certain tasks completed. He realized that he only got that way by doing some of then over-and-over, and not because he was naturally talented at the game tasks. It inspired him to translate that realization into a story. The director and several actors are still interested in making a sequel (last I knew, anyways).

5:32 I did a solo parachute jump from 2000 feet once, there was no door at the exit point - just an open space where the door would be. When the plane had reached 2000 feet, you had to slide your ass forward to the exit hatch and sit on its ledge with your legs (from below knees) hanging outside the plane and your hands holding on to each side of the exit hatch. When you got the slap on the back, you were to push yourself out. The parachute opened itself (static line), with a 2nd emergency parachute strapped to your chest. I felt like James Bond. 😎

4:25 In science fiction, this 'frame' is called an exoskeleton (meaning skeleton on the outside) and the principle is that it amplifies applied force through a force feedback loop, so it is a force multiplier, making the user 'stronger'. Much less complicated force feedback mechanisms actually exist, but this compound exoskeleton they are wearing is well beyond current technology. In particular the ones in the film run off some kind of moderate sized battery pack and give the current state of that industry, there is no way that a suit like that would function for more than a hand full of minutes at best without a significantly larger pack than would be possible given the available area on the suits in the film. So no, this isn't a thing the military has.

Just so you know Jen... There are these kind of "robot suits" like seen in the movie. They are far less advanced though and very clumsy, so they wouldn't be able to pull basically any of the maneuvers Cruise pulled in the movie just flying around and rotating his body instantaneously to shoot some alien behind him.

Many military weapons, notably including claymore mines and various rocket propelled projectiles, really do have “this side toward enemy” stamped on them. The most important thing to remember is that the other side of these weapons is also a very risky place to be standing.

Does the military have exosuits? Yes and no. Exosuit technology exists, but it isn't being used in combat yet.

The awesome Bill Paxton! Was this his last film or was it Two Guns? R.I.P.
Hold the honor of being killed by a Xenomorph and Predator! Some say by a Terminator too but I've seen that scene dozens of times but can't confirm if his character died. He was thrown against a gate but was that enough to kill him?!
Sci Fi recommendations: Oblivion and Fallen!

This movie did so many things right. Even though it’s familiar trope, it was handled in a way that the story progressed without feeling repetitive. The aliens were original, not the always classic big head humanoids. And Emily Blunt aka Rita Vrataski - this is how to write badass female character!

Fab reaction, it was exciting. 😄 I see 'Oblivion' (2013) is recommended in quite a few comments, it really is great. Stunning visuals.
I did it to try and cure my fear of heights and to impress a girl. The latter worked.
