I don't really see what makes him cowardly. There are lot's of units in the military that don't see active combat and have different roles. One thing that doesn't make sense from a writer's POV in the movie is that they try to portray him as cowardly for not wanting to do it, even in interviews about the movie, but his reaction is completely reasonable. It's also extremely detrimental to the entire military to do something like that. Giving a serviceman controls to a tank that they have no idea how to use is a hundred times worse than not having him and 20 other allied soldiers on the battlefield. It's why the military puts so much emphasis on their weakest links being just as good as the others. You can't afford to have that one guy who is not only bad at his job, but could potentially end up killing everyone else by his own screw ups. Like they said at the start of the movie, that's a total movie thing to happen. No modern day, non-third world military would ever risk something like that. It's even worse for PR if this guy promoting your forces "randomly" gets enlisted to fight, then dies on the first day. What'd day expect?

Picking apart realism in a blockbuster is pretty futile, even if you’re like George and just can’t help it.
Fun fact: on set, it took every person took ~30 minutes to get into their suit, but Cruise decided to make it a competition to see who can get dressed fastest. And because of that, I think they got it down to about 3-4 minutes each. So, a huge save on time getting ready and more for filming
Bill Paxton was the unsung star of this film. His performance as Master Sergeant Farell was so hilarious and endearing. I literally grew up watching him in films like Apollo 13, Twister, Titanic, and Mighty Joe Young, so it's sad to think he's not with us any more. He's genuinely missed. 🙏🙏🙏

It's the movie title that kills it. Good name but not great catchy name and most who I think hear it aren't too impressed to watch it. After u see it though it's as cool as Minority Report and War of the Worlds.
One thing I always appreciate about Tom Cruise in action movies is how he allows himself to seem vulnerable and not always in control. Even in the Mission Impossible films. A lot of action stars often come off as stoic and unflappable. And that's boring. Because if the main actor isn't phased by the violence and devastation around them, then the situation probably isn't all that dangerous. Tom Cruise is doing what guys like Bruce Willis and Harrison Ford were doing in the 80s. Allowing themselves to look scared and vulnerable, neither of which means that the character is a coward or incapable

There are a lot of changes, and some character names have been westernised, but the base premise is the same. Rita's backstory in the original is really cool. We don't know what her real name was as when her family was killed; she was underage, so she took the name of a dead woman, "Rita Vrataski", to join the army. Tom Cruise's character in the original is a Japanese man named Kiriya Keiji, but he gets the nickname "Cage" from "Keiji."
All you need is kill has a dark bleak ending though. Which is why Edge of Tomorrow’s ending is a bit incoherent, because they changed it to make it more upbeat,

So, one thing the movie never explains is how the aliens are so advanced. The mimics in general arrive on earth and get totally demolished, but as soon as the Alpha is killed, it resets the day. Like the way Cage's character adapts, so do they. They essentially kept resetting the days until all of their units adapted and evolved into these extremely fast things you see Cage facing now. The Omega is constantly evolving it's AI with every reset. If earth's military or any force from another planet is able to create a new weapon to kill it's Alphas, it resets days until it eventually has the knowledge of how to defeat them. The mech suits probably worked well against them, until they kept evolving to know how to kill them. Remember, the start of the movie says they knew the military was coming. The Omega could have replayed that single beach scene a hundred times until it knew exactly where every single soldier was to take out. Even the plane getting shot down must have been something they kept trying until they found out the exact coordinates to hit them out of the sky from. The Omega could have originally sent out Mimics that looked like human or were akin to insects, but eventually found out that this octopus shape was the apex predator design for dealing with human targets. It's actually a really interesting thing to think about.

Totally agree with you here. Oblivion is one of my favourite movies. Great acting, a decent story, amazing music by M83 and Joseph Trapanese, and great visuals to boot. Sure, Tom's capable of a lot more (I'm thinking back to movies like Born on the Fourth of July and Magnolia here), but I enjoyed both this and Oblivion immensely. I personally love seeing Tom in science fiction. There's something about it that just seems to fit him.

I struggled a bit with the mechanics of the ending, but fortunately, there are a number of people here who have helped. From what I've heard, the major block to a sequel is Tom Cruise's schedule. He doesn't have the 'Omega' ability in the film.... he, by absorbing the blood of the 'Alpha' is able to become part of the alien neural network, and trigger the Omega's ability to reset the day, upon his death. At the end of the film, he absorbs the Alpha's blood again, and is able to trigger the Omega's ability one last time, as they die together in the same explosion. He will not be able to reset any more days, as upon him waking up on this last reset, the Omega is now dead.
Without having ever died and being groundhogged, I knew what the thumbnail was gonna be. While some moments of the plot make me "wait, how would that work?", for once I'm glad they keep the focus on delivering a story full of thrills and all kinds of emotional beats.
The moment when he breaks formation and starts to try to run away in the exoskeleton was just great. TC did a great job of being the completely useless coward, and progressing to badass. Great fun!

For not really hearing anything about this film, I was really surprised and enjoyed the heck out of it. Was a unique twist on the alien invasion trope. It was also the first time I saw Emily Blunt and I was instantly sold on her as an action star.
I will NEVER forget the first time I saw the "Mimics" for the first time and being beyond shocked and horrified. The design for them was so creepy and disorienting to watch. Not to mention how disturbing Cage's first "death" was. The trailer did a good job of hiding the actual enemy/antagonist, so I assumed it was a human force or country being fought in the future. NOPE! 🙃😭😩
There's a great book by Ken Grimwood called "Replay". It predates this and "Groundhog Day". It's about this guy in his 40s who dies and wakes up in the past in his 18 year old body with all the memories of his previous life. Every time he dies, he wakes up in a younger body with all the memories of all if his lives. It's one if my favorite books.

I always wondered how Rita confirmed that she really lost her power. Even after she got pumped with someone else's blood, she would never know she lost the power, unless she tried to off herself.
In the film it's implied that Cage felt the power leaving when he woke up in the hospital. And the next assumption would be that she felt the same thing.
21:35 you can see his eyes going clear from the opaque, his reaction in the movie tells you he knows by the feel that he's been disconnected. In the full movie the next thing he says to Rita is that he's "out," that he's lost the power and he can feel it.
In a time where there's a lot of movies that adapt videogames' stories, this movie decided to adapt a videogame's mechanic. And it was so much fun doing it.

The military answer to your question about why him. If they are pulling PR officers for combat, then they are losing badly, a lot of people have died, and there aren't any other options left. As for the phone calls, if its any kind of secret attack or time sensitive, phone calls generally aren't allowed.
There is a screenplay written for a second film, that Emily Blunt said is really good, but over time especially it seems less likely that it will gedt made. Cruise is busy as always anyhow, about to shoot a movie in actual outer space after finishing Mission Impossible.
Since we have been too dumb to industrialize the Moon by now, I live in hope that shooting movies in actual outer space will be the trigger to get us up out of the mud.

This is one of the most underrated Tom Cruise movies. It's absolutely my favorite he's ever done, except maybe Top Gun Maverick, my wife and I just watched that last night and were on the edge of our seats. What a banger
Definitely an underrated Sci-Fi flick. One of my favs for sure. If you're interested in more Tom Cruise Sci-Fi, I would highly recommend OBLIVION. Morgan Freeman is also in that one. Yeah definitely, armies have never forced people to fight for them when they don't want to It does get exhausting seeing people treat every plot point or character beat as a mistake
@@beageler It think it all depends on how far the movie pushes the suspension of disbelief. For example, I absolutely can not stand the movie Prometheus due to all the logical gaffs that break my suspension of disbelief. But in this movie, could I easily imagine a General sending a blackmailer to a combat front to get him out of the way permanently? Sure.
But generally soldiers who refuse to fight are imprisoned, not forced to fight. They would indeed be a danger and counterproductive if forced into combat. Court martialling them is the deterrent for others to ensure they are more likely to follow orders. I had the same reaction when I saw the film, though its hard to predict what the military would do when humanity is faced with extinction. Probably just shoot those who refused to fight- its a deterrent that is less resource intensive and less risky for comrades
@@beageler Even conscripted soldiers who refuse to fight are subject to court martial rather than physically forced to fight. This is a western army depicted in the movie. They don't use slaves or convicts. However, it is just a movie after all so I'm sure they can ignore reality a little. It was a good film .
You might like to try 12:01 which was made before Groundhog Day, there are two versions, a short starring Kurtwood Smith, and a feature length 'remake' based on the concept of the short. Happy Death Day is a slasher version of Groundhog Day and is worth a watch too..
This is the explanation for why Tom Cruise is a helicopter pilot; jet fighter pilot; stunt-car driver; motorcycle rider; free-dive breath holder; and A-list actor, etc., this film is based on his true life story and he's had multiple chances to learn all of these crazy skills! 😉
You guys were not my first reaction channel but you are certainly one of my favorites if not my favorite now! Partially because of great selection of movies and tv but mostly cause you two are fun to watch and always brighten my day
Those power suits were built, they were quiet heavy and Cruise would often spend 12 hours or so in it during filming. Say what you want about his activities outside of films but he has some serious commitment to his films.
This and Oblivion are two of my favorite Thom Cruz sci-fi action movie's. I know action movie's are his jam lately, and hey I'm here for that, but Edge of Tomorrow and Oblivion are really good, for different reasons too, I'm honestly shocked he hasn't starred in anymore sci-fi movie's like this.
OPSEC - Operational Security. While it's a 24/7 thing, before movements it's extra strict. When a man died deployed, we lost all outside contact aside from mail. Internet and phones were shut down to prevent news of the death. mostly before the officials could contact next of kin.
I'll watch just about anything sci fi. There are a *lot* of movies where I excuse a bunch of shortcomings because I'm so enamored with the concept and/or plot. This one was the opposite--ridiculously bad plot, but the execution of it was so good that I couldn't help but enjoy the end product. Kind of like Independence Day, where a whole lot of it doesn't make any sense but you don't care because glib witticisms and big kabooms.
Shutting down all communications is SOP for OPSEC reasons. I was in Afghanistan during the Marcus Luttrell rescue. Our communications with the outside world were almost completely shutdown. We could make the occasional phone call home, but everything was heavily surveilled. Anyone saying anything about Marcus or the incident was immediately arrested and thrown in the brig. There were a couple guys who made this mistake. They were court-martialled. The enemy can listen in on communications, so that is why OPerational SECurity is so vital.
I think this movie beautifully illustrated a true hero, one who was not built for the task but because of the call of duty and responsibility he/she took on the challenge and kept trying; regardless if he/she achieved the goal or not or how reluctant he/she was at the beginning. There are countless heroes in our daily lives. Don't lose your heart, and that makes you a hero.

In response to your question about why they would put someone who doesn't want to fight into combat, it's because soldier's need to obey orders. If you could get out of fighting by just saying you didn't want to do it and resisting, then your army is going to fall apart pretty darn quickly. That word would spread like wildfire - "a soldier went into the commander's office and said that he felt his strengths were in other things, so they just let him go!" Imagine trying to win WWII while you were just letting people do whatever they felt they were best at and not what the war effort required. Imagine Saving Private Ryan if Tom Hanks just let his soldiers go because they wanted to...
I like how at the beginning Cage was a weakling and coward; one who would never be able to attract a warrior like Rita but by the end of the movie, which from her perspective would be the first time she meets him, he is a leader, a fighter, knows her intimately, understands her, and would die for her. Yes. No phone calls or any other outside contact so there's no leak of information as to where the military unit is going and why. There is then also no reason for the opponent(s) to kidnap family or friends to try to extract aforementioned information. It's a security and safety issue.

i just watched this recently. dont know how i ever missed it. it is right up my alley and i loved it. Cruise, of course, is always great and i love the premise (yes groundhog day).
The "Why did they force him to enter combat in the first place" thing is definitely one of the biggest points of confusion in the movie and really isn't explained very well. There are reasons, though, and they basically amount to "Fuck this asshole, let's get him killed".

My understanding is that they were planning to start filming and then Bill Paxton died. After that, everything stopped.

@Hazmonk She could "feel" that it wasn't in her body anymore. The main character knew he lost it completely because he felt it gone.

The moment when he breaks formation and starts to try to run away in the exoskeleton was just great. TC did a great job of being the completely useless coward, and progressing to badass.

When I was in Marine Corps Boot Camp, we had one guy who everyone couldn't stand. One of the highlights of Boot Camp was the time a Drill Instructor made him run in place in front of a mirror. He had to point at himself, then at his reflection, and repeat, "I'm not crazy, you're crazy," over and over again.
I found Oblivion hit the feels more as far as Post Apocalyptic Sci-Fi with Tom Cruise but I seem to rewatch this one way more.
Oblivion is a brilliant film. The soundtrack by M83 is spectacular.

For not really hearing anything about this film, I was really surprised and enjoyed the heck out of it.
Was a unique twist on the alien invasion trope.
It was also the first time I saw Emily Blunt and I was instantly sold on her as an action star.
I will NEVER forget the first time I saw the "Mimics" for the first time and being beyond shocked and horrified.
The design for them was so creepy and disorienting to watch. Not to mention how disturbing Cage's first "death" was.
The trailer did a good job of hiding the actual enemy/antagonist, so I assumed it was a human force or country being fought in the future. NOPE! 🙃😭😩
There's a great book by Ken Grimwood called "Replay". It predates this and "Groundhog Day". It's about this guy in his 40s who dies and wakes up in the past in his 18 year old body with all the memories of his previous life. Every time he dies, he wakes up in a younger body with all the memories of all if his lives. It's one if my favorite books.
@@richardb6260 There is also a novella with the same plot by a Soviet author that pre-dates "Replay" by two years. It is darker though, as the hero is unable to change the events enough to help the other despite his efforts
I always wondered how Rita confirmed that she really lost her power. Even after she got pumped with someone else's blood, she would never know she lost the power, unless she tried to off herself.
That's... a very good point.
In the film it's implied that Cage felt the power leaving when he woke up in the hospital. And the next assumption would be that she felt the same thing.
21:35 you can see his eyes going clear from the opaque, his reaction in the movie tells you he knows by the feel that he's been disconnected. In the full movie the next thing he says to Rita is that he's "out," that he's lost the power and he can feel it.

In a time where there's a lot of movies that adapt videogames' stories, this movie decided to adapt a videogame's mechanic. And it was so much fun doing it.

I just watched this last week! I love the concept of save scumming being the entire inspiration behind the source material.

Oblivion with Tom Cruise is also a really good Sci-Fi film, it is a little more slow, but the cinematography and the soundtrack are amazing

The military answer to your question about why him. If they are pulling PR officers for combat, then they are losing badly, a lot of people have died, and there aren't any other options left. As for the phone calls, if its any kind of secret attack or time sensitive, phone calls generally aren't allowed.
There is a screenplay written for a second film, that Emily Blunt said is really good, but over time especially it seems less likely that it will gedt made. Cruise is busy as always anyhow, about to shoot a movie in actual outer space after finishing Mission Impossible.
Since we have been too dumb to industrialize the Moon by now, I live in hope that shooting movies in actual outer space will be the trigger to get us up out of the mud.

This is one of the most underrated Tom Cruise movies. It's absolutely my favorite he's ever done, except maybe Top Gun Maverick, my wife and I just watched that last night and were on the edge of our seats. What a banger
Definitely an underrated Sci-Fi flick. One of my favs for sure. If you're interested in more Tom Cruise Sci-Fi, I would highly recommend OBLIVION. Morgan Freeman is also in that one. Another would be ELYSIUM, starring Matt Damon (no Tom in that one). All three are under appreciated in my book but all favs of mine. Glad you like this one.

@@beageler It think it all depends on how far the movie pushes the suspension of disbelief. For example, I absolutely can not stand the movie Prometheus due to all the logical gaffs that break my suspension of disbelief. But in this movie, could I easily imagine a General sending a blackmailer to a combat front to get him out of the way permanently? Sure.
But generally soldiers who refuse to fight are imprisoned, not forced to fight. They would indeed be a danger and counterproductive if forced into combat. Court martialling them is the deterrent for others to ensure they are more likely to follow orders. I had the same reaction when I saw the film, though its hard to predict what the military would do when humanity is faced with extinction. Probably just shoot those who refused to fight- its a deterrent that is less resource intensive and less risky for comrades
@@beageler Even conscripted soldiers who refuse to fight are subject to court martial rather than physically forced to fight. This is a western army depicted in the movie. They don't use slaves or convicts. However, it is just a movie after all so I'm sure they can ignore reality a little. It was a good film .

You guys were not my first reaction channel but you are certainly one of my favorites if not my favorite now! Partially because of great selection of movies and tv but mostly cause you two are fun to watch and always brighten my day

Those power suits were built, they were quiet heavy and Cruise would often spend 12 hours or so in it during filming. Say what you want about his activities outside of films but he has some serious commitment to his films.
This and Oblivion are two of my favorite Thom Cruz sci-fi action movie's. I know action movie's are his jam lately, and hey I'm here for that, but Edge of Tomorrow and Oblivion are really good, for different reasons too, I'm honestly shocked he hasn't starred in anymore sci-fi movie's like this.

OPSEC - Operational Security. While it's a 24/7 thing, before movements it's extra strict. When a man died deployed, we lost all outside contact aside from mail. Internet and phones were shut down to prevent news of the death. mostly before the officials could contact next of kin.

I always describe this is Starship Troopers meets Groundhog Day. Fun film.
I'll watch just about anything sci fi. There are a *lot* of movies where I excuse a bunch of shortcomings because I'm so enamored with the concept and/or plot. This one was the opposite--ridiculously bad plot, but the execution of it was so good that I couldn't help but enjoy the end product. Kind of like Independence Day, where a whole lot of it doesn't make any sense but you don't care because glib witticisms and big kabooms.

This is a genius movie. Got out in 2014. I cannot recall anything even remotely close created since then.
Shutting down all communications is SOP for OPSEC reasons.
I was in Afghanistan during the Marcus Luttrell rescue. Our communications with the outside world were almost completely shutdown. We could make the occasional phone call home, but everything was heavily surveilled. Anyone saying anything about Marcus or the incident was immediately arrested and thrown in the brig. There were a couple guys who made this mistake. They were court-martialled. The enemy can listen in on communications, so that is why OPerational SECurity is so vital.

I think this movie beautifully illustrated a true hero, one who was not built for the task but because of the call of duty and responsibility he/she took on the challenge and kept trying; regardless if he/she achieved the goal or not or how reluctant he/she was at the beginning. There are countless heroes in our daily lives. Don't lose your heart, and that makes you a hero.

In response to your question about why they would put someone who doesn't want to fight into combat, it's because soldier's need to obey orders. If you could get out of fighting by just saying you didn't want to do it and resisting, then your army is going to fall apart pretty darn quickly. That word would spread like wildfire - "a soldier went into the commander's office and said that he felt his strengths were in other things, so they just let him go!" Imagine trying to win WWII while you were just letting people do whatever they felt they were best at and not what the war effort required. Imagine Saving Private Ryan if Tom Hanks just let his soldiers go because they wanted to...

I like how at the beginning Cage was a weakling and coward; one who would never be able to attract a warrior like Rita but by the end of the movie, which from her perspective would be the first time she meets him, he is a leader, a fighter, knows her intimately, understands her, and would die for her. He walks up to her as the man of her dreams. To the outside world he went to sleep on the helicopter as a weakling and woke up a warrior and a general.
It's one of those films that's a lot more fun than you remember (puns and irony included)!

Yes. No phone calls or any other outside contact so there's no leak of information as to where the military unit is going and why. There is then also no reason for the opponent(s) to kidnap family or friends to try to extract aforementioned information. It's a security and safety issue.

The "Why did they force him to enter combat in the first place" thing is definitely one of the biggest points of confusion in the movie and really isn't explained very well. There are reasons, though, and they basically amount to "Fuck this asshole, let's get him killed".
