Terminator 2 is less of a horror movie than this one, but you can't stop here. You have to see Terminator 2. Ask anyone.
Agreed. And this opens up the usual discussion on "which is better." I would say that its a moot point. They're different enough to be different but tied together well enough to be part of a whole story. Not watching the next one would be like not reading the next chapter.
@@arandomnamegoeshere True. Cameron did the same trick he pulled with Aliens when he made T2 and switched up the genre of the sequel, and just like with Aliens it works beautifully. There are literally zero horror elements in T2 but she simply must at least see that one.

Terminator 2 is one of the first answers when you ask people to name a sequel that's better than the original. At the very least, it's a close run thing between the two of them.

I enjoyed your reaction but I'm not in to horror. But then again I don't think of The Terminator as horror. So my watching your reactions will depend on how YOU define horror and what other movies you will be reacting to.

I have always loved that Reese wondered what Sarah was thinking in the picture. And she was thinking about him.

There are lots of these little ironic realizations on a second viewing.
"Tell me about my son."
"He's about my height... He has your eyes." (Well, yeah, not surprising, as he's a mix of both your genes.)
"You trust him. He's got a strength. I'd die for John Connor." (Yep, you will.)
@KaitainCPS True. Cameron did it a lot. Some were surface and obvious. When Kyle began describing John, I said aloud in the theater, "Reese is the father?" And I hated that there was a clue so obvious there. While others, like the tech. of the Era helping The Terminator throughout. The pager ringing stopping the doctor from bumping into him and ringing the alarm too soon. The Walkman occupying the roommate while The Terminator dealt with the boyfriend. Otherwise she may have phoned the police, James Cameron had to outline.

Not the only movie. But it means that the Terminator not only failed to prevent the birth of John Connor, he actually caused it to happen.
John would be 23 years older than his his father. This also means it's possible that John himself could have slept with Kyle's mother, meaning Kyle would be John's son and his father. John could actually be his own grandfather.
Kyle mentions the picture that caused him to fall in love with Sarah Connor. He says he had always wondered what she was thinking when the picture was taken.
At the end of the movie Sarah's picture is taken while she was thinking of Kyle Reece. When she pays the boy we see it is the picture that would cause Kyle Reece to fall in love with her.
Is this why he fell in love with Sarah Connor, because it was Kyle she was thinking about, 23 or 24 years before Kyle was born?
The bit where Sarah yells "on your feet soldier" is such a powerful moment and a tiny glimpse of the incredibly strong person Kyle knows her to be.
I use that line to motivate myself during workouts or hard times, imagining Sarah Connor shouting it at me. Works every time.

One of my favorite things in all of cinema is how different Sarah was between 1 and 2 - and how natural it felt. No need to over-explain her transformation.
I’ve watched the first Terminator however many dozens of times, and I STILL get chills when Arnie is looking around at the club scene!

@@Guovssohasyeah, Cameron nailed that scene by adding slow-motion and letting the music transition from disco dancing to Brad Fiedel's score! The best scene of the movie. The police station assault is 2nd best, I think

I love that you appreciate filmmaking. You like the stop-motion rather than allowing the film to be dated by it. You see that the Terminator's head in the bathroom scene is a prosthetic but you're willing to see where they go with it. It's nice to see reaction videos from someone who doesn't think that they're "above" what they watch.
For the time, these effects were so mind blowing. I was only 8 when this came out as a new release VHS. I had nightmares about skeletons with red eyes for quite some time after but the film has always remained among my most favourite films. I even named my own first born son Reece because of the impact Michael Beihn in the film had on me. He's 26 now.
100% I unsubscribed from someone who laughed and mocked the spfx, even went so far as to call the movie a comedy.
@@eddiemorales7467 Nice work. I prefer honest reactions but if a person can't look past the constraints of budget or technology then I don't think their reaction to film is worth paying attention to.
Whether a prosthetic, puppet, or process shot in a stationary car, as long as an honest effort was made I have no issue with obvious effects. The point of special and visual effects is to illustrate what is happening in the story, not fool us into thinking it's real.
I always find jittery stop motion like that creepy. I think it suits the T-800

@@karlynn7719 Oddly enough, I did, and I've heard I didn't miss anything. The thing is, I love movies of all types, blockbusters to arthouse films, and I've heard T-2 described as the greatest action sci-fi film ever, so I must have thought "It's all downhill after this." 😅
The Terminator 2 is absolutely a must watch after this, it even has some humorous moments 😉 By the way, Congratulations for 50K, not that easy when doing only horror movies and letting all the blockbusters out. 👍
My favourite part, and a sad fact, is when Kyle said that he always wondered what Sarah was thinking at that moment in the picture. And she was thinking in Kyle during that tape record. Lovers across time....

I always thought it was great storytelling that Kyle always wondered what she was thinking about in that photo and why she looked kinda sad, and it turns out he fell in love with a picture of her, as she sat there thinking of him and how she loved him.
Such a great way to tie that together.
Fun fact. In the book (and you can see it briefly in the movie) the Terminator checked each of the Sarahs' for a metal pin in their leg because that was in an identifying medical record from their time. At the end, when Sarah pulled the pin out of her leg, that was the injury that made the medical record.

The novelization of The Terminator is actually based on the script.
That's the thing about the "I'll be back" line. It was never written as or really intended as a big important one-liner, audiences just reacted to it in a totally unexpected way and it blew up into the 80s equivalent of what we'd call a meme today.

Yeah, I'm not convinced that even the second time that it was used (in Commando) was a deliberate reference to the first (in The Terminator). I feel like, if it had been, it probably would've just stayed "I'll be back," instead of becoming "I'll be back, Bennett." It could've just been a coincidence that Arnie said the same three words in consecutive years, but audiences picked up on it and writers of later movies deliberately included it for their sake.

Schwarzenegger had trouble pronouncing "I'll" so, he wanted to say "I will be back", but Cameron insisted.
This is why I love Kat's channel. Saying Ginger's boyfriend was nice was spot on. I have heard other reactors say Matt was creepy or a jerk. Kat can read a person's character better than most. She has the brains to tell Ginger's roommate and best friend adores Matt, and that alone shows he's a good guy.
Sarah called him Bunky. There was a lot of affection there. Matt was a good guy who fought.
Except that time she told the poor girl to help buffalo bill with his couch 😂. I still laugh at that.

When he realises he was talking to Sarah, he's genuinely kinda mortified, which is adorable.
It's more a tell on the reactor than the character of Matt who is obviously a nice guy, and put up more of a fight against a Terminator than a mere "meat-sack" has any right to.
The scenes where Sarah ducks underneath the table just as the Terminator is looking over at her in the Tech Noir and the scene where Dr Silberman turns around just as the Terminator is walking into the police station always send chills down my spine.
The gun shop owner was played by the late Dick Miller.
In his long career he was in over 100 movies. He appeared in most of Joe Dante’s films (Gremlins) and starred in some for Roger Corman. He had a PhD in psychology and was beloved by everyone who worked with him.
And most importantly…ROCK AND ROLL HIGH SCHOOL!!!

There's a reason The Terminator is one of the most celebrated Sci-Fi films of all time...and yes, it _does_ qualify as horror, too. Seen this movie literally hundreds of times since it was released, and loved _your_ seeing it for your first. As much as you enjoy movies, and as much as I do too, it would be a treasure to watch movies with ya like this. You have a lovely nature. :)
T2 is out of this world. Linda Hamilton is just stunning she should have got an Oscar just for the pre-filming training she did for the part let alone the performance.
She's amazing, but she doesn't get enough love for her performance in this film. It's much more nuanced.
James Cameron's first choice for the Terminator was OJ Simpson. The studio told him that nobody would buy The Juice as a killer.
Edit: Somebody below pointed out that I got the idea backwards. It was the executives who wanted OJ and Cameron said no.
I heard that Arnold auditioned for Reese. Can you imagine Arnold trying to give all that exposition?
Lance Henrikson, who is a cop in the movie was going to be the Terminator, there is promotional material made, posters etc with him on

A friend of mine is the first policeman the Terminator eliminates but copies his voice. He also helped write the screen play for the Terminator series and The 13th Warrior.

About 65. He was James Cameron's best friend in High School and did a stop action film that the movie was later based on. William Wisher.
William Wisher was also in TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY as the guy who takes multiple pictures of the Terminator after being thrown and crashes through the department store window.

The punk at the beginning is Bill Paxton(RIP). He played a marine in Aliens. The actor playing Kyle Reese(Michael Biehn) had a major role in Aliens as well also playing a marine. The detective(Lance Henriksen) in Terminators played the android in Aliens. A lot of actor crossover in those two projects.

@@jeffreyulibarri8412 Looks a little similar but no. The trucker in the diner (called Rocky) that beat up Clark Kent was played by Pepper Martin. Dick Miller has 186 credits as an actor (thanks IMDB) and was indeed in many horror movies. I particularly remembered him from The Terminator and The Howling (1981) where he played the owner of the occult book store.

Machines will betray us.
Ironically, Terminator, Matrix, and I, Robot will insure that AI won’t become our overlords: because if AI _actually_ becomes smarter then it’s programmers, and then sees how humans expect AI to act in those movies, the AI will learn that it’s best bet is to BEFRIEND humanity, not overlord over it.

It's Flintstones-in-Space, otherwise known as The Jetsons.
A TV show made at nearly the same time by the same people (Hanna Barbara) and in the same style, but with robots and flying cars and stuff.
And they even had a cross-over movie!
Both Jetsons and Flintstones arrived in the early '60s and were two of the first prime-time animation shows. FLINTSTONES was derived off of the 1950's TV show THE HONEYMOONERS with Jackie Gleason, Art Carney & Wives as neighbors in a low-income apartment house in NYC. JETSONS were derived from any-number of married-with-kids sitcomes in the prior 10 years... except in the future.
a fan theory is that The Flintstones and The Jetsons were in the same universe at the same time, after an apocalypse. The rich live in the sky and the poor live on the ground. Thats why, in The Flintstones theme tune, one line is "...the modern stone-age family."

That's not a scalpel. It's an X-acto knife that can be purchased at any hobby store, as well as those clamps (hemostats) - both items are used in making miniature models, among other things.

The question wasn’t regarding the kind of instruments but instead where did they come from/how did he find them.
And I think you knew that.
I've been to motels like that and they all come with X-acto knifes and scissors....and a bible.
A lot of stuff CAN be used medically.
I can't even list all the uses for a Small-size pair of children's tights.

This crushed your expectations. Wait till you watch Terminator 2.
The natural human reflex is that when you are going to turn your head you first move your eyes so that you can see what you are turning towards. In an effort to make his character less than human, Arnold made the deliberate choice to reverse that. When he's chasing after Sarah in the stolen cop car, he first moves his head and then his eyes. It's a very subtle and yet super effective way to make the Terminator just a little "off" and a bit creepy.
Interesting point! That’s actually seems quite difficult to do.
23:44 .. not everybody. In the second movie there is a comment made about this murderer having killed 17 police officers this night, while Traxler says that there's thirty cops in the building. 13 officers probably just ran for their lives.
1984 was one of the greatest years for movies. This one came out of nowhere. We had never seen anything like this before. I was way too young to be allowed to see it when it came out but when I was finally able to rent it on VHS, I was blown away.
I saw this movie when I was 7.
Loved it.
Ya I was 22 when this came out and every guy went to see this and every girl went to see Flashdance. This one aged better imo. 😊

Reese told Sarah at the Tiki Motel that he spent years looking at that picture, falling in love with her and wondering what she was thinking about that made her look so thoughtful and sad. Well.... she was actually thinking about him and how much she loved him and how sad she was that they only got to spend one night together. NOW you can cry.
A further irony is that in the novelisations of The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day we find out that Reese spent years growing up in the molten, shattered remains of civilisation, hearing the name John Connor like it was some sort of legendary hero and desperate to meet him. Eventually, in his mid teens he gets to join the Resistance, but is just an inexperienced, private soldier, whereas John is the great, untouchable, god-like hero who commands the whole army and is effectively the king or president of all of mankind now. One day, out of the blue, John Connor selects a twenty-three or so year-old Reese to serve in his personal Tech Com unit. Reese is star-struck and watches with admiration and devotion from afar as John's army wins the war in 2029. After that, they quickly find out that Skynet's (the mainframe supercomputer who commands that Machines) last act was sending a Terminator back through time in an attempt to kill John before he was born and they need to send someone else back to stop it and protect Sarah. Reese, who has exchanged maybe a few dozen words with Connor in all these years (John didn't even say anything when he gave Reese the photo of Sarah), throws his name into the hat fully in the expectation that someone way closer to John with much more experience and technical and/or historical knowledge will be chosen, but Connor picks Reese without hesitation, much to his surprise. Reese is still only a sergeant remember, and John is a four star general. It's like the President of the USA handpicking a teenage intern in the White House for a special mission.
John briefs Reese personally on his mission, including all the personal information and expresses complete confidence that Reese will get the job done and complete his mission. All the time he's doing this, Reese is wondering why John Connor appears to be on the verge of tears and thinks his commander might be holding something back from him, or not be as confident as he truly appears.
The tech team succeed in calibrating the time-travel equipment for Reese to use and send him back, at which point Connor reveals he'd known Reese was the man for this job for years, and also known he would always succeed. He then says that Reese is also his father and his personal team nearly drop dead with shock. Basically, John had been in agony ever since he'd become aware of Kyle, knowing he was his father and keeping him close enough to train and give him experience, but not as close as he wanted, because he was afraid of being unguarded.
Terminator Genysis attempts to recreate these events, but it utterly screws them up and makes a film which should be burned if ever encountered that also succeeds in sucking all the dignity and gravitas out of the first film, which is a film noir masterpiece. For some reason in Terminator Salvation Skynet knows who Reese is and what he looks like when he's about fifteen and makes him a priority target, which is utterly impossible, because only John and one other person whom he tells EVER knows this secret. As I say, if you HAVE to watch other films after T2, stop at the fourth one, Terminator Salvation. 3 and 4 are mediocre, to say the least, but beyond those they actually start harming the franchise irreparably.
Its crazy to think about, how John must have felt all those years, knowing what he would eventually have to do to his own father, just to be born.

Oh yeah the whole time travel aspect involving Kyle Reese is VERY interesting and slightly confusing but Kyle seems it up pretty well with saying he's from a "One Possible Future". You can look as these events as a loop as well that just happens over and over again. But Kyle bringing up one possible future implies that we could stop Judgement Day from happening but I guess the we'll have to continue with the series.

Skynet is defeated in 2029, Sending a T-800 back to 1984 to stop John Connor being born.
Kyle Reese from 2029 travels back to 1984 to defend Sarah Connor.
Kyle gets Sarah pregnant and Kyle dies.
Sarah Defeats the T-800 and uses her knowledge of the future to train a future John Connor.
John Connor is then born in 1985 a year later.
Skynet becomes aware on August 29, 1997. Judgement Day begins.
Kyle Reese is born around 2004 and later joins the resistance after meeting John Connor.
Humanity fights against the machines for over two and a half decades.
Skynet is defeated in 2029, Sending a T-800 back to 1984 to stop John Connor being born.
Who knows how many times this loop has happened.
The episode of Disco where Harry Mudd uses a time-crystal to create a time loop in order to steal the Discovery is a good example.
Based on a line near the end, there are almost 60 "loops" before the cycle is broken. Whereas this cycle theoretically would only be "broken" if Judgement Day is actually stopped.....
My theory is that the Terminator and T2 storyline that we're familiar with is, at minimum (and mostly likely), the 3rd time through the loop. The first time through, Kyle couldn't be John Connor's father as he hadn't been sent back yet. The original John Connor isn't the one we now know. He was the son of Sarah and some guy she met normally and fell in love with. Because Cyberdyne didn't have the advantage of the remains from the T-800 the first time through the timeline, Judgement Day is 10-20 years after the 1997 date that we know, allowing John to grow up normally. He was most likely career military and a natural leader. This allows him to become the person to rally the resistance after Judgement Day. Sarah wouldn't have been a legend in this timeline because she wouldn't have known Judgement Day was coming nor would she have had any reason to train John for what was to come. Since the events happened later in this timeline, Reese would have been older and a trusted Lt. to John when he was sent back.
The first time Reese and the Terminator are sent back (2nd time through the timeline) an older, wiser Reese is able to fend off the Terminator longer and maybe even defeat it (although he would still end up dying either in the attempt or early in John's life). This Reese wasn't in love with Sarah when he was sent back as the first John would have had no reason to plant that seed, nor would Sarah have been a legend yet. He would have needed to know her longer to fall in love with her. This is the timeline when Sarah becomes a legend. This timeline is when Sarah starts training and preparing John for what is to come from the time he's old enough to understand. However, Cyberdyne now has the advantage of the T-800's remains to reverse engineer, speeding up the process of creating Skynet. Judgement Day coming on August 29, 1997 takes Sarah by surprise and she mostly likely either dies that day or shortly after, but John survives. The 12 year old John Connor needs time to grow up before he can become the leader of the resistance, but he eventually does and leads the resistance to the brink of victory. Along the way, he encounters a young soldier by the name of Kyle Reese. He befriends Reese, takes him under his wing, and tells him about his mother, planting the seeds of love for Sarah in Reese's mind. He even gives Reese a photo of a young Sarah. This time, when the time comes to send back someone to protect his mother he doesn't send back a seasoned leader. He knows he has to send Reese, a young Sgt who may not be quite ready for the task, because otherwise he won't be born.
The third time through the timeline is the story we know. Reese is young and, while very competent, not as experienced as other soldiers would have been. Reese has trouble staying ahead of the Terminator this time and ends up dying just a couple of days after being sent back. However, because he was already in love with her it's still long enough to conceive John. Reese tells Sarah about Judgement Day being August 29, 1997 and she acts accordingly in this timeline. Knowing Judgement Day was going to happen when John was only 12 probably drives her a bit insane in this timeline and she ends up pushing John away by her sheer intensity trying to cram as much training as possible in him before 1997, which we see in T2. However, she and John (with help from the reprogrammed T-800) are able to change the timeline and seemingly stop Judgement Day (although T3 would later show they just delayed it).
Anyway, just my thoughts on the time loops.
And in a deleted scene two factory workers find microcomputer chassis from the Terminator remains which they'll send to research and development later that day. After the ambulance with Sarah drives off it reveals the factory was cyberdyne systems. So the Terminators chip becomes the basis for Skynet so that's a loop as well.

When I was a kid in the 90’s, I had a T2 action figure of a motorcycle cop that had rocket launchers burst out of his back. As far as I recall, that didn’t once happen in the film. That comment brought me back about 30 years

The Terminator is basically an '80s slasher, instead of Jason there's a robot. It scared the crap out of me as a kid, so that alone makes it horror in my book!
"gun slashers", for lack of a better term, were a thing in the early eighties, like Southern Comfort. Even Predator was one, to an extent.

I saw this film in the theater when it debuted decades ago........this film still stands as one of my favorites........ but it's the part of the film that gave me the most goosebumps because it was written and performed so well and how amazing is it that Kyle came across time for a women he's never met.
Still gives me goosebumps till this day. Maybe I'm just a hopeless romantic at heart.
A lot of people think this is Arnold's break-out role that made him a big movie-star, but I was about 12 or 13 when I saw Conan the Barbarian on cable back before Terminator, that's how I got introduced to Arnold and to me that's his break-out role. I still love Terminator 1, best of the franchise.
Yeah, Conan was the breakout role. Terminator was the role that made him a superstar.

I'm British and saw the Terminator on release but Arnold was comparatively unknown here. Thanks to this movie by the time he did Commando next year he was a huge star.

Reese's entrance falling out the sky was done for real. A stuntman laid on a board set up between two ladders and slid himself off it to create that fall. As far as I recall they didn't have a crash mat available either so he just dropped onto his shoulder on pavement. Michael Biehn said it was the most violent thing he's seen in his career. His stunt double also plays one of the cops during the police station fight, I guess they had to double up as many stunt performers in the movie also have small roles.
Also another amusing fact, you'll notice that Reese and the Terminator are never in the same shot until it's just bare bones in the factory. This was because Arnold had commitments to the second Conan movie so they filmed as much as they could without him. The only time the full "human" Terminator is in the same shot as Reese is during the Technoir shootout where he's being shot by Reese and that's a stuntman lol. Michael Biehn gets asked all the time about working with Arnold and they never actually were on the set at the same time.
"The Roger Corman everybody's-a-worker" kind of successful low budget movie making. Not like the pampered, "we'll fix it in post-production" gang of idiots. Like the "wretched hive of Scum and Villainy" that is today's Walt Disney Company.

than mimicking. I'll take stop-motion & practical effects over CGI any day. It takes real artists getting their hands dirty, rather than some pimple popper sitting on his fat @$$ wiping crumbs off his keyboard.
You HAVE to watch Terminator 2 just after this one...the character arc of Sarah Connor is beyond awesome and the action/effects scenes are off the charts (even for today). You'lk definitely enjoy it (maaaaybe a bit even more than this one). Cheers!! 😊

During the scene when the terminator tells the truck driver to, “GET OUT!” if you do a “freeze frame” you can see the other options. They weren’t nearly as threatening though. “GET DOWN AND BOOGIE” was one, the other was “DO YOU HAVE ANY SPARE CHANGE.” Didn’t seem particularly scary or threatening either. I think they made the right choice! Great reaction Kat! Next up The Car 1977! Awesome!

This was supposed to be a cheap summer action film just like dozens which were released each Summer in the 80s. Nobody expected it to be anything big. It didn't have a particularly big budget as evidenced by the stop-motion and prosthetic Arnold head. Arnie wasn't the "star" of the movie because Arnold was virtually an unknown outside bodybuilding enthusiasts (all 12 of them.) This movie came out of nowhere to be a blockbuster. But it was a low budget film costing $6 million while earning over $100 million. It was the highly anticipated sequel which started the "big budget" action film genre. Released just 6 years later T2 would cost $100 million to make and earn more than $500 million at the box office. So, the phrase, "I'll be back," had multiple meanings.
Most of what you say is true, except the Arnie part. Arnold Schwarzenegger was already known to many. Not just for the bodybuilding, but for _Conan the Barbarian_ a couple of years earlier. He was pretty much a global star at this point. Maybe not superstar yet, but he certainly wasn't an unknown.
@@DavidAntrobus You are right. For some reason I always think Conan was a later film. I guess that is because it had a much bigger budget and Oliver Stone had a writing credit. But I guess that was Arnie's first starring role. And the movie did do quite well at the box office. Good catch.

When i was younger i loved how cool this movie was. Now rhat im older i love the little details like Kyle saying he always wondered what she was thinking about in the picture, and she was thinking him and how much they loved each other, and thats the picfure he fell in love with. It's like love reached across time. Like they say in Interstellar.

After The Terminator, James Cameron did "Aliens," the sequel to "Alien." Your reaction to Alien was fantastic and we have been waiting SO LONG to see you watch the sequel (1986's "Aliens"). Since you enjoyed this one, hope to see you react to "Aliens" soon!! It is an AMAZING sequel. (Seriously, it is considered one of the greatest sequels of all time).
One of my favorite movies ever! I actually like this one more than #2 because of the low-budget horror vibe, though #2 is fantastic.

Good movies indeed. Happy Birthday is perhaps a bit slow. Instead of Initiation, how about "Chopping Mall"? It has the gun salesman in it from Terminator (Dick Miller) who Kat liked.
