John Facenda died soon after narrating this highlight film as well as the 1983 LA Raiders Highlight Film and a handful of other 1984 productions for NFL Films including Super Stars of the Super Bowl. In my view, having watched hundreds of films narrated by Facenda, some of his strongest work was done during the spring/summer of 1984 shortly before he died. He went out at the very top of his game!

That was a crushing loss and I cried as a 9 year old. I was mostly stunned at how we lost . I found it ironic that the dMV's most dominate teams the 83 Skins and the 84 Hoyas both teams Championship losers were better than their previous teams winners in my opinion

Forgotten team that deserves appreciation. Losing a Superbowl, one Game, is given wayyyy too much importance. The way majority of fans think, its as if 95% if Superbowl winners don't lose 3 or more games, nothing matters except one game in February. The professionals playing and coaching; and fans who pay really close attention have better more accurate views of greatness. Every Game counts; every week greatness is there to see. Most low info fans just tuned in to the Superbowl; because if their favorite team sucked that year, they didn't spend any hours watching NFL, until American culture forced you to in February. I'm 52 and was a diehard 'Skins fan. That loss in the SB still burns. Joe Gibbs one of the greatest coaches of all-time may of had his worse game plan ever that day. The Raiders did there homework. They clogged the gaps with their linebackers so Riggins couldn't get going. So why not have your tight ends go up the hash marks and dump a short pass over the linebackers heads. That would of gotten them of the line. Then Riggins get some yards. To watch it was frustrating. Taking nothing away from the Raiders they played great. Going a few times Joe gives it up make many adjustments. They were bad on all facets - special teams, Joe Thiesmann was off in the first half. And they weren't a catch up team.

Scary thing about that team is our field kicker was barely 50 percent. We missed a lot of field goals not including that 1-5 in the NFC title game and missing all the fields in the division round. If Mosely was making 60 to 70 percent like todays current kickers that scoring record could have been around 600. Vikings had a almost perfect field goal kicker (only kick missed was in the conference title game) which was valuable for the New NFL scoring record (Patriots ended up breaking)
Truth be told, the Redskins defense wasn't that good in 1983, which was shocking because that and the running of John Riggins was how they dominated in 1982. In 1983, the Redskins defense frequently sprung leaks, often BIG leaks. They blew a 23-point halftime lead at home to the Cowboys in the season opener, allowed 28 points to a Raider team without Marcus Allen, again at home (I don't count the Greg Pruitt punt return TD against the defense), nearly got beat by a Chargers team that was playing without Dan Fouts (the Cowboys actually DID get beat by that same Fouts-less Chargers team later that season), and of course, their defense got humiliated by the Packers in another MNF game. When you score 47 points and still LOSE, as the Redskins did that night, it becomes pretty obvious that the defense isn't that good. And as it turned out, that team's defensive liabilities finally came home to roost when they nearly blew the NFC Championship Game vs. the 49ers they had in the bag entering the fourth quarter, and then their entire team collapsed in Super Bowl XVII vs. the Raiders. Not only was their defense again not that good, but the rest of the team followed suit, as it became the first to allow TDs in all three phases of the game, all in the first half. Their punting unit gave the Raiders another TD, this one on a blocked punt, then there was that mind-boggling decision not to go into the locker room down 14-3, but to try to do something offensively, which ended in utter disaster. And after the one TD they scored, they even had the PAT blocked. So Super Bowl XVIII was one of those games where nothing, and I mean nothing went right for the Redskins.
Of course, when you're ahead all the time, as that team practically was, other teams simply could not afford to even attempt to run the ball against them. That's why I think the running and passing team rankings are overrated. That Redskins team naturally figured to be ranked high against the run, because their opponents were always playing catch-up and couldn't run the ball, even if they wanted to. And on the flip side, because their opponents always played catch-up, their pass defense stats figured to be pretty miserable, and they were, though they also capitalized by creating turnovers in the opposing team's passing game.
Thats a very interesting statistic. On the flip side as a Broncos fan, they lost SB XXII to the Redskins at the start of the 2nd half of the AFC Championship Game against the Browns. They were outscored 65-27 in the next 4 quarters.

I've watched the Redskins for over 30 years and the 1983 Redskins were the best team in franchise history. Except for possibly Sammy Baugh, Theismann was the best QB in Redskins history and it's a tragedy he is not in the Hall of Fame yet. Riggins was the best running back in Redskins history. The 1983 Redskins offense was very explosive, easily the best in franchise history. Their 541 points that year was an NFL record for over 10 years, which is pretty impressive when you think about how NFL offenses became much more passing-oriented during the late 1980s/early 1990s. In addition, the 1983 Redskins' plus 40+ turnover ratio will never be matched, it's like DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak. If it wasn't for the disastrous Super Bowl vs the Raiders, many people would view the 1983 Redskins as the best team EVER.
Been a die hard for just as long, but I'd argue that the 91 team was more balanced. '83 D was average. And as much as I loved Theismann, I don't think he's a hall of famer. Stats just aren't there.
I disagree. Theismann had more passing yards than Staubach and almost as many passing yards as Bradshaw, despite playing many fewer games. He had a better passing rating than Bradshaw and a better touchdown/interception ratio than Bradshaw. Plus, Theismann had one of the best winning percentages of all-time among QBs. He was a starting QB for only 8 years, yet led the Skins to two Super Bowls. Passing yards aren't everything, dude. The NFL was a much different game 30 - 40 years ago. Nobody put up passing yards back then like they do today, except for Johnny Unitas (who played forever). Manning, Brady, and Drew Brees are the only QBs playing right now that I would put ahead of Theismann. Regarding the 1983 vs 1991 team...the 1983 team set a record that will never be broken with their +43 turnover differential. The 1983 Redskin defense was very opportunistic, the offense was explosive and made very few mistakes, and that is why I would take them over the 1991 team.
JN Hutchi I said nothing about yards - I said stats. Theismann had good stats. He was a good QB, and a great one for 2 years. Getting to the SB twice and winning once in 8 years isn't enough for the HoF. He was never considered in the elite class even while he was playing. He was All pro once and went to 2 pro bowls. Staubach started about the same length of time and went to 4 or 5 Sb's (too lazy to check) and won 2, and retired as the 2nd highest rated QB of all time. And everyone had better stats than Terry Bradshaw, who was just lucky to play on the team he was on. I love love love'd the '83 team. But I still would say they had an average (but yes, very opportunistic) defense. As many points as the '83 team scored, the '91 team had a better point differential with a tougher schedule. The '83 team began to fall apart in the the 2nd half of the NFC championship game (and I'm still pissed at Mark Moseley) and played a stinker in the SB.
We'll have to agree to disagree. Theismann was easily considered one of the Top 5 QBs in the league from 1979 - 1984. And Theismann's QB rating was almost as good as Staubach's, you can look it up.
If you get to the Super Bowl 25% of the time as a starter during your career, you belong in the HOF. If you are the best QB in the league for 2 years (1982 - 1983), you belong in the HOF. Theismann has very strong HOF credentials.

One of the worst Sunday's of my life, that whole week after that game. I was inconsolable for weeks after the blow-out you could not talk to me that is how pissed i was. Then to find out the Skins were partying the night before the game made me even more pissed!
I was definitely pissed too. It now makes sense as to how thoroughly outplayed they were. I could not understand how a team that pretty much ran a train on the Rams with a 51-7 win could just not show up for the SuperBowl. I think they got way too overconfident with a 21-0 lead against the 49ers and could not turn in back on. Their season was pretty much done at that halftime. Even that game should not have been close. Mosely was 1-5 on field goals so 49ers were lucky to even be in that game.
This team became overconfident after the divisional round hammering of the Rams. The next week the got up 21-0 in the NFC Championship and near lost. Many will tell you the 49ers should have won that game, referees screwed them at the end of the game. If you look it up the '83 skins defense gave up a ton of points in garbage time. Gibbs was known for taking his foot off the gas in decided games, SB26 for example.. They gave up 31 to a 12-4 cowboy team, 35 to the SB Champ Raiders and 48 to a Lynn Dickey led Packer team who, by the way, lit up everyone in '83 and had the 7th highest passing yardage season in the 80's. It would have been 2nd if you take out Fouts and Marino. This was definitely a defense that gambled more than the '91 team. I mean you have 4 dbs with at least 4 ints. The Hogs though, while they were awesome at run blocking gave up 35 sacks, Ouch. The 91 team gave up 9. If you put this team up against the 91 team IDK who to pick. The '83 team had the better offense, they ran the ball better and that combination of Riggins and Joe Washington. I'd take that over Byner and Ervins, if you're Pettibon in '91 who are you gonna key on? If you're '83 Pettibon, I'm not letting the Posse beat me, doing what Belicheck did to Bills in '90 and what Walsh did to the Dolphins in '84.

Early in 1983, Washington came back from down 15 points late at home vs LA to win 37-35. However, the Raiders did not have Marcus Allen that afternoon. Washington attempted similar plays in the SB as that earlier game but the Raiders had prepared for that possibility most notably the play which resulted in Squirek intercepting that Theismann screen pass for a TD right before halftime.
The warning signs about their porous defense should have blared after their loss to the Packers in that Monday Night scorefest. When you can't win a game in which you score 47 points, as was the case that night, something's terribly wrong with your defense. Even the Air Coryell Chargers (who nearly beat the Redskins with Ed Luther at QB during that season, and who DID beat the Cowboys with Luther at QB) never lost a game in which they scored that many points, and they were noted for having one of the worst defenses in the NFL, year in and year out.

Scary thing about that team is our field kicker was barely 50 percent. We missed a lot of field goals not including that 1-5 in the NFC title game and missing all the fields in the division round. If Mosely was making 60 to 70 percent like todays current kickers that scoring record could have been around 600. Vikings had a almost perfect field goal kicker (only kick missed was in the conference title game) which was valuable for the New NFL scoring record (Patriots ended up breaking)

The Redskins lost SB XVIII at the start of the 4th quarter of the NFCC v. San Francisco. Skins were outscored 59-12 over those 5 quarters.
Truth be told, the Redskins defense wasn't that good in 1983, which was shocking because that and the running of John Riggins was how they dominated in 1982. In 1983, the Redskins defense frequently sprung leaks, often BIG leaks. They blew a 23-point halftime lead at home to the Cowboys in the season opener, allowed 28 points to a Raider team without Marcus Allen, again at home (I don't count the Greg Pruitt punt return TD against the defense), nearly got beat by a Chargers team that was playing without Dan Fouts (the Cowboys actually DID get beat by that same Fouts-less Chargers team later that season), and of course, their defense got humiliated by the Packers in another MNF game. When you score 47 points and still LOSE, as the Redskins did that night, it becomes pretty obvious that the defense isn't that good.
And as it turned out, that team's defensive liabilities finally came home to roost when they nearly blew the NFC Championship Game vs. the 49ers they had in the bag entering the fourth quarter, and then their entire team collapsed in Super Bowl XVII vs. the Raiders. Not only was their defense again not that good, but the rest of the team followed suit, as it became the first to allow TDs in all three phases of the game, all in the first half. Their punting unit gave the Raiders another TD, this one on a blocked punt, then there was that mind-boggling decision not to go into the locker room down 14-3, but to try to do something offensively, which ended in utter disaster. And after the one TD they scored, they even had the PAT blocked. So Super Bowl XVIII was one of those games where nothing, and I mean nothing went right for the Redskins.

Of course, when you're ahead all the time, as that team practically was, other teams simply could not afford to even attempt to run the ball against them. That's why I think the running and passing team rankings are overrated. That Redskins team naturally figured to be ranked high against the run, because their opponents were always playing catch-up and couldn't run the ball, even if they wanted to. And on the flip side, because their opponents always played catch-up, their pass defense stats figured to be pretty miserable, and they were, though they also capitalized by creating turnovers in the opposing team's passing game.
Thats a very interesting statistic. On the flip side as a Broncos fan, they lost SB XXII to the Redskins at the start of the 2nd half of the AFC Championship Game against the Browns. They were outscored 65-27 in the next 4 quarters.
@@jamesb.9472 I stated that their defense got humiliated by the Packers, not the team as a whole. When you score 47 points and still lose, that's a humiliating performance by the defense. The amazing thing was that the 47 points the Redskins scored that night wasn't even the most for a losing team that season. A little later in the '83 season, the Kansas City Chiefs lost to the Seattle Seahawks in a game in which they scored 48 points.

I've watched the Redskins for over 30 years and the 1983 Redskins were the best team in franchise history. Except for possibly Sammy Baugh, Theismann was the best QB in Redskins history and it's a tragedy he is not in the Hall of Fame yet. Riggins was the best running back in Redskins history. The 1983 Redskins offense was very explosive, easily the best in franchise history. Their 541 points that year was an NFL record for over 10 years, which is pretty impressive when you think about how NFL offenses became much more passing-oriented during the late 1980s/early 1990s.
In addition, the 1983 Redskins' plus 40+ turnover ratio will never be matched, it's like DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak. If it wasn't for the disastrous Super Bowl vs the Raiders, many people would view the 1983 Redskins as the best team EVER.
Been a die hard for just as long, but I'd argue that the 91 team was more balanced. '83 D was average. And as much as I loved Theismann, I don't think he's a hall of famer. Stats just aren't there.
I disagree. Theismann had more passing yards than Staubach and almost as many passing yards as Bradshaw, despite playing many fewer games. He had a better passing rating than Bradshaw and a better touchdown/interception ratio than Bradshaw.
Plus, Theismann had one of the best winning percentages of all-time among QBs. He was a starting QB for only 8 years, yet led the Skins to two Super Bowls. Passing yards aren't everything, dude. The NFL was a much different game 30 - 40 years ago. Nobody put up passing yards back then like they do today, except for Johnny Unitas (who played forever). Manning, Brady, and Drew Brees are the only QBs playing right now that I would put ahead of Theismann.
Regarding the 1983 vs 1991 team...the 1983 team set a record that will never be broken with their +43 turnover differential. The 1983 Redskin defense was very opportunistic, the offense was explosive and made very few mistakes, and that is why I would take them over the 1991 team.
JN Hutchi I said nothing about yards - I said stats. Theismann had good stats. He was a good QB, and a great one for 2 years. Getting to the SB twice and winning once in 8 years isn't enough for the HoF. He was never considered in the elite class even while he was playing. He was All pro once and went to 2 pro bowls. Staubach started about the same length of time and went to 4 or 5 Sb's (too lazy to check) and won 2, and retired as the 2nd highest rated QB of all time. And everyone had better stats than Terry Bradshaw, who was just lucky to play on the team he was on.
I love love love'd the '83 team. But I still would say they had an average (but yes, very opportunistic) defense. As many points as the '83 team scored, the '91 team had a better point differential with a tougher schedule. The '83 team began to fall apart in the the 2nd half of the NFC championship game (and I'm still pissed at Mark Moseley) and played a stinker in the SB.
We'll have to agree to disagree. Theismann was easily considered one of the Top 5 QBs in the league from 1979 - 1984. And Theismann's QB rating was almost as good as Staubach's, you can look it up.
If you get to the Super Bowl 25% of the time as a starter during your career, you belong in the HOF. If you are the best QB in the league for 2 years (1982 - 1983), you belong in the HOF. Theismann has very strong HOF credentials.

As a 10 yr old in 1982 I remember seeing something on the news once about how athletic shoe companies were upset about NFL players wrapping their shoes with tape and in turn covering up the brand logo. So the players were required to draw the logo on the tape with magic marker. Some of the drawings were hilariously terrible. I remember seeing the Nike swoosh drawn all crooked and deformed.

My goodness, in 1987 Dexter Manley, Charles Mann, Monte Coleman, and Darrell Green were in their prime(OK Darrell Green has always been in his prime), Goliath Dave Butz still had some juice left, and freakishly tall CB Barry Wilburn was a force to be reckoned with.

One of the worst Sunday's of my life, that whole week after that game. I was inconsolable for weeks after the blow-out you could not talk to me that is how pissed i was. Then to find out the Skins were partying the night before the game made me even more pissed!
I was definitely pissed too. It now makes sense as to how thoroughly outplayed they were. I could not understand how a team that pretty much ran a train on the Rams with a 51-7 win could just not show up for the SuperBowl. I think they got way too overconfident with a 21-0 lead against the 49ers and could not turn in back on. Their season was pretty much done at that halftime. Even that game should not have been close. Mosely was 1-5 on field goals so 49ers were lucky to even be in that game.

Many will tell you the 49ers should have won that game, referees screwed them at the end of the game. If you look it up the '83 skins defense gave up a ton of points in garbage time. Gibbs was known for taking his foot off the gas in decided games, SB26 for example.. They gave up 31 to a 12-4 cowboy team, 35 to the SB Champ Raiders and 48 to a Lynn Dickey led Packer team who, by the way, lit up everyone in '83 and had the 7th highest passing yardage season in the 80's. It would have been 2nd if you take out Fouts and Marino.

Early in 1983, Washington came back from down 15 points late at home vs LA to win 37-35. However, the Raiders did not have Marcus Allen that afternoon. Washington attempted similar plays in the SB as that earlier game but the Raiders had prepared for that possibility most notably the play which resulted in Squirek intercepting that Theismann screen pass for a TD right before halftime.

The warning signs about their porous defense should have blared after their loss to the Packers in that Monday Night scorefest. When you can't win a game in which you score 47 points, as was the case that night, something's terribly wrong with your defense. Even the Air Coryell Chargers (who nearly beat the Redskins with Ed Luther at QB during that season, and who DID beat the Cowboys with Luther at QB) never lost a game in which they scored that many points, and they were noted for having one of the worst defenses in the NFL, year in and year out.

I could be wrong but I think they got the name pearl harbor crew because teams were always trying to comeback against the Skins that season. Hence why they were always having to try and defend against long bombs. Not necessarily because they were bad.
