Its one of the few times an entire city regardless of party affilation, ethnicity , etc people were in the Skins spirit. All the local television networks were into it. Beautiful period
Sixth grade for me. The RFK experience that season was beautiful. The crowd was such a diverse mix of races and classes who nevertheless came together in support of an entertaining, likable, and dominant team. I've spent the rest of my life as a sports fan trying to recapture that feeling, even while knowing that I never will.
@@jtukbb Your absolutely right it was amazing. John Riggins The Diesel, the fun bunch and hogs. I remember the entire RFK stadium rocking with the chant We Want Dallas We Want Dallas. When my friends and I played football in the backyard I was always Joe Theisman.
These guys were my worst nightmare when I was a kid. I can still remember as many, if not more of their name's than my Cowboys. They were a great, mean & scary team. I still remember the time after they destroyed my Cowboys & they were in their locker room, & one of the coaches, not Gibbs, screamed out, "How about them Cowboys?" The whole locker room just erupted. They DEFINITELY would have won at least another Superbowl with Theismann had he not been injured. Even though they were the source of sadness, I am lucky to have watched so many great teams over the years. Even the Redskins😬

As a life long fan of the Dallas Cowboys since 1970, during the game I'll pull for my team. But there comes a time when you still have to recognize greatness. John Riggins, Joe Theismann, the Hogs, Daryl Green, the list goes on from these legendary players. I may hate them during the game, but after the game I'd drink a beer with them.
I still have the Post sports page. headline "Respect Washington 31, Dallas 17" it was a good time to be a fan. I still am and have high hopes for next year. But I have high hopes for every year.
The thing I remember most (aside from the Dallas games)...was the strike and how impressed we fans were that, unlike any other team back then, the Skins (supported by Gibbs), had not a single player crossing the picket line. Instead, the team met wherever they could and kept up drills and practices. The replacement team, with no "crossovers" did wonderfully. Beat Dallas ;) And when they returned, the "real" team was still unified, motivated, in shape and prepared. Paid off.
+Carolyn Greenburg I believe you. But it's funny you say that because the 1985 Super Bowl winning Bears from their 30 year reunion also mentioned and claimed that they too did not have anyone cross the picket line too from that 1982 strike shortened season. It was a long time ago, but I can't recall any players crossing picket lines until the 1982 NFL season officially started. In 1987 however, quite a few players did in fact cross the picket lines and played with the SCAB football players. I think the Dallas Cowboys were guilty of having the most amount of players cross the picket line. Which fueled a lot of anger and motivation for opposing teams extra incentive that year to beat them.
No Bears crossed in 1987 - the original article I read was incorrect. FURTHERMORE, I was wrong about the year - I was speaking of 1987, not 1982. In 1982, I don't think there were any replacement players; the season was just shortened. Thanks for your comment, it made me double-check my sources and taught me some things!
I was a hapless Cardinals fan in those days, so I had to hate the Redskins and especially those arrogant Cowboys, but even I appreciated this awesome team. The Diesel was my favorite running back after Terry Metcalf, Jim Otis, and OJ Anderson.
24+ years since Washington has been to a Super Bowl (as of 2016). Hard to believe. The Skins went to 4 Super Bowls in 9 years (Jan 1983 - Jan 1992). What Dan Snyder has done. Run a great franchise into the ground.
Snyder bought the team long after 1992 and the team was awful when Snyder bought them. and yes he had some screw ups like Spurrier and firing Schottenhiemer after he had season that mirrored the 1981 Washington Redskins... With Tony Banks at QB. However Snyder eventually learned to sit back and let the experts he hired to run the team and the team has its ups and downs like most teams.
WE WANT DALLAS! WE WANT DALLAS! WE WANT DALLAS. Still to this day gives me goosebumps. Hail to this team, this season and seizing this moment. CHAMPIONS INDEED!. How bout a 2nd year coach after beating Detroit went through the hall of fame gauntlet of coaches in Bud Grant, Tom Landry and Don Shula to win his first championship.
That was the Redskins team I remember. The 2nd winningest team in the 80s behind the 49ers.Joe Gibbs as head coach, Joe Theismann at QB, John Riggins, the Hogs, the smurfs at wide receivers. They were an NFC powerhouse winning 3 Super Bowls. And oh yeah, the defense got after folks too.Great times 82, 87, and 1991.
What folks forgot were how the team - and Theismann in particular - got READY for the 1982 season. In the "bad old days", Theismann did everything BUT start at quarterback - including covering punts, (That was also how he got his start as a holder.) Still, quarterbacks (even backup quarterbacks) covering punts? You had quarterbacks that punted (Danny White did in the NFC Championshp, for example) - but COVERING them? How many do even today?
We are back I feel for the first time in decades we have a competitive organization on the right track it’s still early but I finally feel we are heading in the right direction!
The way that John Riggins runs with the football' should be the way any running back in today's game should run the ball' an the way the Redskins offensive line blocks for him, should be the way that any offensive should play' especially in a championship game and a Super Bowl.
THOSE ARE MY REDSKINS!! HTTR4LIFE!! NO MATTER HOW BAD WE ARE NOW THEY CAN NEVER TAKE THESE YEARS FROM US THAT MY FRIENDS IS WHAT IS MEANT BY THE SAYING "REDSKINS FOOTBALL" HTTR INDEED!!
I was born in Washington, D.C. at the end of 1955. I left there in 1974, but returned often until the end of the century. All my friends, and family were Redskins fans. The Redskins teams I followed when I lived in Virginia were the late 60s 70s teams. When Vince Lombardi came to Washington, and created a winning team 8 - 6 it was incredible. Sadly he passed away soon afterwards. Then there was "The Future Is Now" years with George Allen when he brought great players from the Rams with him to Washington....putting up Redskins posters in the Pentagon....Mike Bragg the Redskins punter who went to our High School Jeb Stuart changed now to Justice waa affectionately known as "Dum Dum". This brings back so many. memories thanks for posting it. All these familiar names! The Redskins forever! 😎
Thanks for reading it... I guess everyone feels something like that for any thing they love....and....maybe loving the Redskins like that...well....it's the way it was. Always will be... They really brought us together. RFK wasn't much for baseball. But, football well it shook, swung, and rocked!!!
Dexter Manley lives in the building I work in....I tell him all the time...I loved watching you all play that hard nosed defense. Once Dan Snyder took over this team, its been going down hill.
Man, during the Redskins' glory days or the 1982 to 1991 period they were winning, Joe Gibbs and Bobby Beathard were in their prime as talent evaluators, the team had a VERY good band, and then there were the players. The players they had back then, some of them were first or second round picks that were hits for the franchise. Then there were those undrafted or lower round picks who helped the Skins become who they were in that 10-year period. I remember as an elementary school kid (between 7 and 9-years old) way over in Los Angeles, California watching NFL games (including many Redskins games) and admiring the 1990 and 1991 Redskins teams.
The reference to Dan Riley as strength and conditioning coach of the Redskins was well deserved. Rich Milot and Larry Kubin were fortunate to have Dan as their strength and conditioning coach at Penn State when they both played there. Dan nearly won a national title in his 4th year at Penn State before the Nittany Lions' loss to Alabama in the 1979 Sugar Bowl classic, ruining a perfect season and a #1 ranking. Gibbs took notice and hired Dan who quickly had the Redskins winning a Super Bowl. I visited Dan at Redskins Park in the Spring os 1984 and took a tour of the weight room. It was nearly all Nautilus machines, as Dan embraced Arthur Jones' machines and philosophy about gaining strength and size. The Hoggies got so large that Dan had to have some of the machines modified so that the bars would fit the large men more comfortably. Additionally, weight stacks were modified to make them heavier with the bottom 5 to 7 plates, which normally were 10 pounds each, were replaced with 25 pound plates to make the stacks 100 pounds heavier. Dan was a pioneer in the strength training field and should be in the strength training hall of fame if there was such a thing. Milot's career was extended no doubt because of training with Dan for 15 years I believe. Rest in peace Rich! 64 was much too soon to go, especially for someone who was conscientious about his health!
I was a freshman at Chantilly High School in Fairfax County, VA in 1982 and remember this game well. Gary Hogeboom darn near brought Dallas back. This was when both teams were good and the two games they played each season between 82-85 really mattered.
I swear there was less racial division in America in the early 80's than there is today. This team was representative of what America could be like. Never saw a more unified group of white and black players, not to mention fans. Those were the days! What a coach, what a team!
I was a teenager back in 82 and there was far less racial divide back then. Of course, back then there wasn't the race-baiting media and politicians using race as a polarizing issue. Black people back then didn't think of themselves as victims like black people of today. Today blacks enjoy the greatest amounts of freedoms and laws against discrimination then at any time in our nations history yet they are brainwashed into believing that the man is keeping them down.
TruthHurts58 that’s hilarious......a video about the RED SKINS and this guys saying there was less racial division.....no sir you were able to avoid it more back then....now were just bringing it to your front door....if it annoys you....well...good
That was hard to watch.. Skins were favored to beat the Raiders and it was the most devastating heartbreak loss, next to the 72 Superbowl loss to the Dolphins
Raiders rumored to have been responsible for a breakin at the redskins facility to pull a pats and grab the signals and gameplan. That game was the weirdest game I ever saw. The skins were 28-3 going into that game with the best offense in nfl history, defending champions and a win over the raiders already that year. My uncle worked in the training dept and said Monk and Jacoby were furious over the game not being on the up n up. Funny how it took monk a ridiculous amount of time to go to the hof even when retiring the top receiver of all time. Should have been a 1st ballot hof'er and jacoby still isn't in which is a joke. 4 nfc championships vs the likes of taylor, white, white and the likes.

Could be wrong but I think that the guy singing "Hail to the Redskins" 0:45-1:02 is Marion Berry in his first term as D.C mayor from 1979-1991. Someone let me know if I'm right or wrong..thanks. Never been a 'Skins fan but that song sure gets the blood pumping and it gives me goosebumps. Always loved hearing that song as CBS' Pat Summerall and John Madden broadcasted from ol' RFK stadium. NFL sucks now, too P.C.....don't even watch the Super Bowl.
Being threatened and forced to change the iconic Redskins name is a damn shame.. Keep these pos politicians and politics out of football and, all sports!!!
The years 1972 and 1982 had two things in common: Miami and Washington playing in a Super Bowl in the greater Los Angeles area and the sitcom M*A*S*H. M*A*S*H was midway through its first season when the Dolphins capped off their perfect season over Washington in Super Bowl 7 at the LA Coliseum. When Washington got their revenge over the Dolphins in Super Bowl 17 at the Rose Bowl, M*A*S*H was a month away from its historic series finale.
Oh....for want of a place to send the owner responsible for the 'skins downfall. Oh, wait, there is a place...starts with an "H"....please enjoy a toasty warm stay until that place gets dark and chilly, then shiver on the ice.
That SB XVII has something that will never happen again! Miami completed ONE PASS in the entire 2nd half, and it was an interception.. Shula lost that game going conservative in the 3rd quarter.
What has been forgotten -- Joe T threw FOUR INTs vs the giants in that second meeting -- one with Moseley's record setting FG Superb the defense held an undeserving giants to 139 yards -- as noted in the film Joe T did not play a smart game until later in 2nd half
Wow, this video gives me shivers. I remember as a little kid (maybe 6 or so) watching this video on VHS after my mom got it for me from the video store Erol's back in the 80s. I probably haven't seen this video in 30 years but I still remember it so vividly, especially John Facenda's voice.

Tru metalhead on Maui ey
And you skin fans have had none since!

I remember JT played football in the CFL and in Washington he was the backup for Billy Kilmer who was Sonny Jurgensen.
We are back I feel for the first time in decades we have a competitive organization on the right track it’s still early but I finally feel we are heading in the right direction!
"FIGHT! FOR OLD...DC!!!"
Brings me to tears
Great. Glad you enjoyed. Wild times.
Joe Gibbs, the GOAT
Don't forget about Joe Theisman and the diesel John Riggens and the hogs and fun bunch.
Music soundtrack torch love it bring you back in the days
I was at two of those playoff games and the victory parade. Miss those days.
I know right and I miss those days to.
Joe Theisman, the diesel John Riggens and the hogs and fun bunch.
Lucky you!

WASHINGTON REDSKINS JESUS CHRIST MEN’S TANK TOP
dumanus.com/product/washington-redskins-jesus-christ-mens-tank-top/
too young to have seen the glory days! wish I wasn't tho! hopefully we got some new rings in coming seasons
I’m old enough to remember the Redskins’ championship days, but I didn’t actually become a ‘Skins fan ‘til 1996.
They need to bring the Redskins name back.
TruthHurts58 less racial division? only 21 years earlier the redskins were segregated.
I disagree but nice try....
TruthHurts58 that’s hilarious......a video about the RED SKINS and this guys saying there was less racial division.....no sir you were able to avoid it more back then....now were just bringing it to your front door....if it annoys you....well...good
@@treybear8174 and That , Is Racism in itself
The day the Redskins beat the cowboys was the day I left Dallas to become a Jet fan!!! Damn 😭😭😭😭
Really?
How did the jets do that year ?
You really fell off the deep end..
thanks for posting this!
I wish they would of beaten the raiders the next year! that one super bowl makes me cry
Frank Rulli Me too. I was crying my eyes out when we lost.
I remember this like it was yesterday.
Hail to the Redskins story of the 1982 Washington Redskins World Championship professional football clinch NFC East Division crown NFC Championship beat Dallas Cowboys 31-17 Super Bowl xvii beat Miami Dolphins 27-17 8 - 1 in the strike-shortened season amazing year Leeann Tweeden Hometown native of Manassas Virginia and Stacy Keibler Hometown native of Baltimore Maryland love them Redskins fans
Those were the days
Peace ✌️ 2024.
Love to Bradley and Stephanie
I miss the Redskins.
R.I.P Joe Bugel "Boss Hog"
I miss these days. It's hard to believe we're going to called Commanders now.
Loved the name of the defense, the blue collar Boys, it's up there with the greats
Keep these pos politicians and politics out of football and, all sports!!!
from playing like ass in preseason to winning the Super Bowl! what a turnaround.
Best days of my life.
I miss the good old days when the Redskins would throw the ball DEEP. Stretch the field, hand it off... win games.
I love that guy who sang hail to the Redskins
Perfect timing this video 😁😁👍
With this new group in DC I have a little bit of the old feeling. This Jayden Daniels kid is something. We got to get the name back.
Phenomenal!!!
Amen
I was at that game.
Loved it!
Wow the Mayor of DC singing Hail to the Redskins !!!
When Washington got their revenge over the Dolphins in Super Bowl 17 at the Rose Bowl, M*A*S*H was a month away from its historic series finale.
love the smurfs
Ms Shirly Earley & Mr Seymour Butz asked me to post this on behalf on all 'Skins fans worldwide. for the 2017 season.
Love that team hail to the redskins
Now the Redskins are no more.
Only in history and that's sad.
That's what happens when the NFL tries to be politically correct...instead of being a football team to entertain people.
Oh....for want of a place to send the owner responsible for the 'skins downfall. Oh, wait, there is a place...starts with an "H"....please enjoy a toasty warm stay until that place gets dark and chilly, then shiver on the ice.
R.I.P.: Joe Gibbs, The Greatest Coach THE REDSKINS could have.
What a great team. The Hogs and company destroyed my beloved Detroit Lions in the first round of the playoffs.
Skins and Lions fan here. Let’s keep pulling for the Lions! The skins needed too, but the Lions need it more, and will probably get it sooner.
Who's watching this in 2018 excited for the team this year? We are 5-2 so far
.
Such a shitty end to a season that started off with so much promise (just like 1996 and ‘97).
Joe Gibbs sure has had great success.
That SB XVII has something that will never happen again! Miami completed ONE PASS in the entire 2nd half, and it was an interception..
Shula lost that game going conservative in the 3rd quarter.
What has been forgotten -- Joe T threw FOUR INTs vs the giants in that second meeting -- one with Moseley's record setting FG
Superb the defense held an undeserving giants to 139 yards -- as noted in the film
Joe T did not play a smart game until later in 2nd half
@rcviolet6 Joe also lost part of his top front teeth in that game too.
John Facenda....wow.
I wish I could find how to run the Counter Trey.
They would be the best team for what was a 9 game season plus the playoffs and Super Bowl
18:47 Jerry Faison!! 🎳
the gold old days of the Commanders.
Wow, this video gives me shivers. I remember as a little kid (maybe 6 or so) watching this video on VHS after my mom got it for me from the video store Erol's back in the 80s. I probably haven't seen this video in 30 years but I still remember it so vividly, especially John Facenda's voice.
+zyxwut321 My dad used to call John Facenda "The Voice of Armageddon".
zyxwut321 Erols...man I remember those days. Before Blockbuster Video
Man the cowboys should have gotten excited hearing that chant
About time this team changed its name. The ‘Washington Swamp’ would work...
hogs diesel and we want dallas brought me here
Hail to the -Redskins- Commanders!
I was in the AIR FORCE IN 82 STATION IN TEXAS. TALK ABOUT SOME OF THE HURTING CRYING PEOPLE 😢 I SWORE A FEW COWPATTIES FAN TOOK A NOOSE AN WENT ON TOP OF TEXAS STADIUM AN DARED TO JUMP BUT SOMEBODY TOLD THEM THEY BE A NEXT YEAR LOL
They shoulda jumped anyway.
hey dave do you have or can you get the redskins playoff games from the 1982 season.
+Carlton cherry jr -- wish I did
they went from losing preseason in August to winning the Super Bowl!
And a players strike.
21:33 "Dallas sucks Hogs...what?" lol
Haha yes
22:10
The SuperBowl is like “do I mean nothing to you” ?
I know Washington went on to beat Miami 27-17 in the SB, but it’s odd that the end of this video calls them “Champions of the world” after beating Dallas in the NFC championship game. 🤔🤷🏼
19:34
There are some suspicious moments where the defender just seems to let Charlie Brown catch the ball.
